Making a noun plural (Journal page 36)

There are 4 rules for making nouns plural in Spanish:

Rule #1

To make a noun plural in Spanish:

• add “S” to nouns that end in a vowel

Ejemplo: bota (sing.) = botas (pl.)

• add “ES” to nouns that end in a consonant

Ejemplo: árbol (sing.)= árboles (pl.)

Rule #2

If a noun ends in “z”, change the “z” to “c” and add “es”.

Ejemplo:

lápiz (singular)

lápices (plural)

Rule #3

If a noun ends in “ión”, drop the accent and add “es”

Ejemplo:

lección (singular)

lecciones (plural—NO ACCENT)

Rule #4

If a noun ends in “es”, you don’t need to add an ending, only a plural article (either definite or indefinite)

Ejemplo:

martes (singular)
