for previously arranging the venue). Historically, Victoria BC music teachers had been meeting annually for lunch prior to 1975.

The day’s events began with a selection of jazz and classical piano music by one of the festival award winners, Jared Richardson. Tom Lee Music donated the use of a beautiful 7’ Steinway piano and Jim Anderson provided his excellent tuning services.

Jared Richardson

President Lynda Simms McCliggott presided over a short General Meeting and presented Margaret Anderson with a 25 year pin. Congratulations to Margaret! Prior to the Concert, we had a raffle with door prizes from sponsors: Acoustic Pianocraft (Jim Anderson), Long & McQuade Musical Instruments, National Geographic IMAX Theatre, PJ Music Studios, Pacific Opera Victoria, The Royal & McPherson Theatres Society, Tom Lee Music and The Victoria Symphony.

The Awards Winners Concert began shortly after 1pm. Thanks to Pat Williamson for coordinating the award-winning students: Ryan Cui (piano), Nichole Lavallee (piano), Nelson Moneo (violin), Paul Moon (piano), Jessica Pickersgill (viola), Jared Richardson (piano), Victor Shang (piano), Emily Tsao (flute) and Kelly Van Strien (flute).

Each student was presented with a beautifully wrapped presentation rose donated by Thrifty Foods. Our appreciation also goes to Treasurer Jenny Anderson for taking care of the payments and receipts. If you weren't able to attend this year’s Gala Luncheon, I hope that you will be able to set aside time next year to be a part of this wonderful atmosphere of community amongst fellow teachers.

PEDAGOGY

Patricia Kerridge

On Saturday March 27th 2010, a Senior Master Class was held with Bruce Vogt as clinician. The class was held in Room B037 of the MacLaurin Building at UVIC where we were fortunate to have two grand pianos available. This proved to be a very efficient system, since Bruce was able to use the second piano to demonstrate his suggestions immediately, thus creating an extremely effective interaction between clinician and performer. Although seven students had originally registered for the class, two of them were unable to come due to illness. As a result of this, Bruce was able to spend more time with each student than originally planned. Since the repertoire was quite challenging, ranging from RCM Grades 7 to ARCT, students certainly were able to benefit from the extra time. Bruce provided such fascinating insight into so many of the technical and expressive aspects of the works, and all students and teachers felt privileged to be able to benefit from his vast knowledge. I want to thank Bruce Vogt so much for giving this Master Class. We are very fortunate that he was able to find time in his busy schedule to come and share his knowledge of this demanding repertoire with some of our more advanced performers.
