1. PRELIMINARIES – What is this guide all about?

1.1. Preface After years of wandering and camping around Victoria we thought there was a need for a practical guide to vehicle accessible Victorian camp sites which:

Is comprehensive

Indicates facilities, mainly by symbols

Has clear directions – how to get there

Describes the setting, the ambience – why go there This guide is aimed at bush campers using vehicles - car/tent, caravan and motor-home/campervans - and so excludes:

Caravan parks listed in the RACV‟s Tourist Park Accommodation Guide

Camp sites require 4-wheel, water or walk-in access

We do welcome information, corrections, comments and suggestions for improvements. Most free and low cost camp sites have little advertising - it is only by the interchange of information that campers can get to know of those sites.

Camp site descriptions are arranged by Tourist Regions.

These regions broadly coincide with Tourism Victoria‟s Tourist Regions and their jigsaw brochures

There is a separate book volume for each Region Most of the Regions are divided into Sub Regions

1.4 Site Rating

Our rating system does not measure facilities, rather it measures ambiance, reflecting our concept of the ideal site:

private (visual and audio)

shaded

clean, no litter

reasonably level, grassed or firm

and, most importantly, having a pleasing aspect.

There are 10 criteria

Privacy – visual (from roads, houses)

Privacy – audio (from traffic noise)

Privacy – internal (from other campers) Shade

(although we have solar panels on the roof of our „bus‟ we prefer to camp in the shade. There are only a couple of sites in Victoria with shade so dense that we have not been able to maintain the house batteries with portable solar panels on a 6m lead)

Level parking site

Grassed (short) or firm site surface

Internal site roads – gravelled or at least firm

Maintenance – lack of rubbish, facilities (if any) maintained

Aspect – pleasing outlook: bush, view, creek [double score]

Activity – scope for doing something nearby

Each criterion has between 4 and 7 standards, each with of a graded score.

The aspect criterion is weighted (scores are doubled)

The total score is converted to a rating „out of 5‟

Symbols used within the camp site descriptions are:

Rating 0 to 0.5

Rating 0.5 to <1

Rating 1 to <1.5

Rating 1.5 to <2

Rating 2 to <2.5

Rating 2.5 to <3

Rating 3 to <3.5

We do not recommend any site because people have different preferences and concepts of a “good” camp. Our favorites, those we stay over at and/or return to (often because they are convenient as well as pleasant) are colored green in the following list.

We do welcome information, corrections, comments and updates. Most free and low cost camp sites have little advertising - it is only by the interchange of information that campers can get to know of those sites.

3 CAMPING IN VICTORIA

3.1 Where can you camp in Victoria? Provided:-

traffic is not impeded and waste is correctly disposed of,

then, as a generalization:

In State Forests, crown reserves and road reserves

tourist camping is permitted anywhere unless signposted otherwise (e.g. "no parking", "no camping"). Overnight camping at picnic grounds and rest areas is generally permitted but longer stays may be discouraged.

In Parks Victoria reserves

camping is generally only permitted in designated areas

In other areas the attitude of Local Government Councils vary

in undesignated areas (no signs) Health Regulations are applied, so don‟t dispose of grey or black waste water or try running power cables over footpaths

The number of acceptable camping areas in Victoria has declined over the past 20 years. Parks Victoria reserves have expanded and elsewhere "no camping" signs have proliferated. Campers are their own worst enemy – create a nuisance and locals eventually react. So..................

Take your rubbish to a bin – you bought it in so you take it out.

Clean up – leave campsites better than you found them.

Keep fires small, in a fireplace or a trench.

Control pets (even the best behaved dog will get out of control if it smells a wombat)

Use toilets or bury waste (including toilet paper).

Don‟t trample plants; keep axes and nails out of trees.

Basically, even if you might do it in your own front yard, don‟t do it in some one else‟s.

3.2 Victorian Road Numbering System Victoria‟s rural arterial roads are numbered with an alpha prefix that indicates the function and standard of the road: M roads are of freeway standard, with 4 lanes, divided, good linemarking and sealed shoulders. A roads are major highways, sealed, 2 lanes plus overtaking opportunities and sealed shoulders. B roads are major link and tourist roads, sealed, 2 lanes with good linemarkling. C roads are well-maintained rural link roads, 2 lanes and generally (but not always) sealed. The road number remains the same across its route. E.g. the Princes Highway is A1 on some sections, M1 in others

3.3 Victorian Maps Sites in this guide are referenced to the RACV‟s VICROADS Country Street Directory ($30), produced in conjunction with VicRoads Land Information and Survey. With a reasonable road-touring scale of 1:250,000 it covers the entire State. Features include route numbers, rest areas, Parks (but not State Forests), information centres, Melbourne access and bypass maps, town maps and touring routes descriptions as well as road, town and community information indexes. A series of flat sheet format maps is also available. Sites in this guide are also referenced to the Hema Maps Australian Road Atlas ($22) Recent editions do indicate the location of many camp sites but, at a large scale many minor roads are not shown. Good for general touring and route planning. Other maps the enthusiast may find useful include:

VicRoad‟s Drivers‟ Guide to Rural Victoria (free sheet map) useful for route planning; features route numbers and rest areas.

Rooftop‟s Adventure map series ($9) (1:100,000) covering areas east and northeast of Melbourne, featuring parks and forests plus formal and informal campsites. Their Forest Activity maps are more detailed at 1:50,000, with contours.

VicMap‟s Outdoor Leisure maps ($9.50) provide detailed coverage at 1:50,000 and 1:25,000 to a number of tourist areas including the Otways, Grampians and sections along the Murray River.

Westprint‟s Outback Victoria covers the „desert‟ areas along the South Australia border south of the Mallee Hwy [B12] to the Grampians.

3.4 Water Always carry some drinking water – creeks, dams and tanks may be dry or polluted. Always boil local water. Tap water on many sites is unfiltered/untreated creek or dam water.

3.5 Enjoy Camping can be fun and relaxing. If you are roughing it then you are not doing it right. There are plenty of books on camping and bush cooking. Ask other campers how they are managing – all have their special techniques, gadgets and recipes.

Afternoon tea - jam, cream and hot scones just out of the camp oven.

3.6 Tourist Drives in Victoria

This guide concentrates on free and low-cost camping areas, but half the fun of being there is the getting there.

The Vicroads Country Street Directory of Victoria has a descriptive section on touring routes.

The Victorian Tourism Information Service, within their 'jigsaw' series, has guides on caravanning in Victoria.

Our personal favorite drives include:

The Great Ocean Road [B100], including the ridge top road along the top of the Otways from Lavers Hill via Beech Forest, (Turtons Track) and Mt Sabine to Benwerrin (above Lorne) [some gravel, some sections not recommended for caravans or big rigs as bits are very twisty, but level].

The Grand Ridge Road along the top of the Strzelecki Range from south of Warragul, via Mirboo North and the Tarra-Bulga NP to Willung South [some sections gravel, some narrow but level]

The Alpine Road [B500], the fully sealed, highest all-year road in Australia The Maroondah Highway [B360] over the Black Spur (best traveling south, as there are a

couple of pull-offs to view the tree ferns]

3.7 Country Fire Authority

The CFA may declare a total fire ban day over parts of Victoria, known as "Fire Ban Districts", usually publicised over the radio the evening before in conjunction with weather forecasts.

The travelling visitor may be confused as to which District they are in. This map is overlayed by the VICROADS Country Street Directory map index.

5 INDEX of camp sites – alphabetical A problem with listing camp sites alphabetically is that many sites have at least two names, eg

Murrindindi and Blackwood. Our solution is to allow for two names: "Site" and "Sub-Site". In many

cases the "Site" will be the name of the Park or Forest or the nearest main town. This has the

advantage of listing all camp sites within a Park, Forest etc. together

APPENDIX 1 – RATING SYSTEM

Our rating system does not measure facilities, rather it measures ambiance, reflecting our concept of the ideal site:

private (visual and audio)

shaded

clean, no litter

reasonably level, grassed or firm

and, most importantly, having a pleasing aspect.


Privacy – visual (from roads, houses)

Privacy – audio (from traffic noise)

Privacy – internal (from other campers)

Shade (although we have solar panels on the roof of our „bus‟ we prefer to camp in the shade. There are only a couple of sites in Victoria with shade so dense that we have not been able to maintain the house batteries with portable solar panels on a 6m lead)

Level parking site

Grassed (short) or firm site surface

Internal site roads – gravelled or at least firm

Maintenance – lack of rubbish, facilities (if any) maintained

Aspect – pleasing outlook: bush, view, creek [double score]

Activity – scope for doing something nearby

Symbols used within the camp site descriptions are:

TYPE: Each camp-site is described by three classifications 1. Ownership

Forest Park – includes Forest Reserves

National Park

State Park – includes Regional Parks

Reserve – crown land

LG Reserve – Local Government managed reserves

Camp Ground – a recognised camping area with facilities (toilet)

HEIGHT in metres – an indication of the type of weather that might be expected. Lets say:

Over 450 = expect cold nights

Over 800 = expect blizzards

PRIVACY - a short description of both audio and visual privacy

SUIT – the suitability of the camp site and access roads for various type of rigs in normal weather:

motorhomes to about 7 metres

caravans towed by a conventional vehicles

big rigs (over 8 metres), but not always suitable with a trailer
