Opportunities aplenty in VFLSeason 2017 in the Peter Jackson VFL is certainly turning out to be an even one.Last weekend, six of the seven games featured wins to teams lower on the ladder, with the Box Hill Hawks suff ering their first defeat and Coburg recording win number one for the year.
Just three and a half games separate first–placed Box Hill from 11th-placed Sandringham, making for an entertaining final nine rounds of the season. Coburg’s first win of the season was great reward for their players aft er some close results so far this year. There was much talk around Sandringham having 17 St Kilda-listed players in its side, but one of the stats that was missed was the number of TAC Cup players in the Coburg team on the weekend.
The Lions fielded 18 former TAC Cup players in their line-up, which is a great promotion for the talent pathway in our state. They have had a close relationship with the Calder Cannons over a number of years, and on the weekend seven former or current Calder players featured in the win along with six ex-Northern Knights.
The ability of Coburg to provide opportunities to these former TAC Cup players has reflected in their draft stats over the last three years, with Coburg joining Geelong as having the most AFL draft ees of any VFL club since 2014 with four each. During that time there have been 22 players recruited to the AFL, with Coburg supporting the development of the likes of Adam Saad, Robbie Fox, Luke Ryan and Michael Hartley.
The VFL continues to provide the next step in the pathway for players overlooked in their draft year at TAC Cup level or for players that develop later with their football ability. The mix of VFL and AFL players in the competition continues to enable players to test themselves at the highest level and possibly take the next step with their football, or return to local level in the future as a better player.

The 22-year-old represented the Peter Jackson VFL in the State Game against Western Australia in May and has played eight games for the Bombers in 2017 – a far cry from previous years, when he’s struggled for consistency aft er requiring two knee reconstructions while at the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup.
Ferry said the injuries – suff ered when he was 16 years of age in 2011 and then when he was 18 in 2013 – had proved “character-building” and had created a personal trait he hoped would attract AFL clubs looking for a 191cm backman capable of playing on tall and small opposition forwards.
“The second injury was hard to swallow at 18 years of age,” Ferry said. “The 2013 season was going really well – I was selected in the Vic Metro squad but
unfortunately I did my knee the week before (the NAB
AFL U18 Championships started). You start to talk
about getting draft ed and you think you can make a
career out of football, so it was pretty heartbreaking
to know you’re going to miss 12 months.
“I had a bit of time off and that’s when Essendon
contacted me to say they’d like to bring me down to
the club’s new facilities, help me with my rehab and
try to get me on an AFL list.
“I think one thing that would probably appeal to
AFL clubs is my resilience. It’s pretty hard at a young
age to take those big blows, but being resilient is
something I pride myself on.”
Ferry has taken heart from seeing former VFL

THE FAST FIVE with James Ferry
(The AFL Victoria Record will this year ask our profiled Peter Jackson VFL players five
quick questions to find out more about who they are off the football field.)
What food could you not live without?
Pizza.
If you could do anything, what would be your dream job?
Apart from playing AFL football, I’d love to be a dog-walker. It’s something myself and Aaron Heppell
are going to look into.
What karaoke song would you sing to save your life?
‘Hollaback Girl’ by Gwen Stefani.
Which teammate would you want to be stranded on a desert island with and why?
Aaron Heppell, just because he’d be my business partner with the dog-walking.
Which teammate would you not want to be stranded on a desert island with and why?
Nash Holmes, because of his potty mouth.
Bombers Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Ben McNiece given chances on Essendon’s AFL rookie list over the last two years and breaking through for games at the elite level.
He said their consistency of performance as VFL-listers – “being able to back it up week in and week out” – was one thing he’d taken from his time playing alongside them.
Aft er appearing in 13 games and two finals in each of the last two VFL seasons and a 2017 pre-season focused on building strength in his legs, Ferry said his body is now in “the best condition it’s ever been in”.
Finding some consistency of his own has seen him average 16 disposals, five marks and four rebound-50s per game for the Bombers this year while also being named in the VFL’s best players in the State Game loss.
Now a leadership group member at Essendon under skipper Nick O’Brien and vice-captain Aaron Heppell, Ferry is passing on lessons learnt during his times on the sidelines to some of the club’s unlucky VFL-listers.
“Unfortunately we’ve got Sam Hooper, Bruno Laguda and Ben Fennell who have done their ACLs now,” Ferry said. “Sam and Bruno are just starting their careers off , so having a chat to tell them there’s a bigger picture and it’s not the end of the world is something I’ve been trying to do.
“I do feel there’s a few life lessons I can bring for the younger boys.
“With these serious injuries and being out of the game for as long as I’ve spent out, you start to look at the little things, and just being able to run out on the field week in and week out is actually a great achievement in itself.”

Vic Metro will hold bragging rights over Vic Country for another 12 months after recording a 22-point win in Round 3 of the NAB AFL U18 Championships, writes Peter Tseros.Oakleigh Charger Jack Higgins backed up his best-on-ground performance against WA last round with a second 30-disposal game in a row, and was well supported by the Northern Knights’ Richmond father-son prospect Patrick Naish (23 disposals, two goals), Western Jet Cameron Rayner (21 disposals, three goals) and Sandringham Dragon Charlie Constable (a game-high 31 disposals).
For Country, Geelong Falcons pair Gryan Miers (24 disposals, five clearances, five inside-50s) and James Worpel (25 disposals, 10 tackles) impressed with their ball use, while Dandenong Stingrays and Country co-captain Oscar Clavarino (11 disposals, six marks) and Murray Bushranger Ben Paton (19 disposals, seven rebound-50s) were strong in defence.
The game started at a frentic pace, with Country scoring the first goal of the match through a Brent Daniels (Bendigo Pioneers) snap shot eight minutes in. Jordan Johnston (GWV Rebels) made it two in a row minutes later as Country quickly established an 11-point lead. Dandenong’s Luke Davies-Uniacke was busy early, showing his clearance work around the ground. Rayner scored Metro’s first major soon aft er, which set in train a high-quality term that ended with the scores level at quarter time.
Metro finished the second term with a flurry, Dylan Moore (Eastern Ranges) kicking his team’s third goal in a row to give it an 11-point lead at half time. Northern defender Ethan Penrith and Metro and Eastern captain Joel Garner were impressive down back for Metro, so too was Constable with 13 first-half disposals. Miers was among the best for Country with 10 disposals and two goals for the quarter.
Geelong’s David Handley kicked the first two goals of the third quarter to level the scores, but like in the previous terms, Country was unable to impact the scoreboard for the full quarter. When Western’s Lachlan Fogarty kicked his second goal 18 minutes into the term, Metro regained the lead and would not relinquish it for the remainder of the game.
Metro held a 10-point lead at three-quarter time, and when Ranges pair Adam Cerra and Jaidyn Stephenson added back-to-back goals 11 minutes into the final term, Metro was out to a game-high advantage of 15 points. Sandringham’s Max King then sealed the deal with a late major.

Todd enters Hall of FameWilliamstown legend Ron Todd last night became just the second past VFA/VFL player to be inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Todd – who passed away in 1991 aged 74 – won VFA premierships in 1945 and 1949 (as captain) during a 141-game career with Williamstown between 1940 and 1949. The prodigious forward amassed 672 VFA goals and was the competition’s leading goalkicker with a record 188 majors in 1945 and 114 in 1946. His best haul in a game was 20 goals against Oakleigh in 1945 and he sits 12th on the list of most career VFA/VFL goals kicked.
Todd controversially crossed to Williamstown from VFL club Collingwood in 1940 at the age of 23. He had kicked 327 goals in 76 games for the Magpies, winning a premiership in 1936 and leading the VFL’s goalkicking count in 1938 and 1939.
But for his exploits in the VFA, Todd joins Port Melbourne great Frank Johnson as the only Australian Football Hall of Famers to have distinguished themselves in the VFA/VFL.
Current Williamstown Chief Executive Off icer Jason Reddick said Todd provided the club with “a legacy that will live on forever”.
Upsets aplentyThe Peter Jackson VFL only narrowly missed out on producing a full weekend of upsets in Round 10.
Heading into the round’s final game on Sunday aft ernoon, the six teams placed lower on the ladder than their opponent to start the round had all prevailed: Essendon (8th) over Williamstown (2nd), Collingwood (12th) over Port Melbourne (3rd), Coburg (13th) over Sandringham (10th), Footscray (6th) over Werribee (5th), Casey Demons (7th) over Box Hill Hawks (1st) and Richmond (9th) over Northern Blues (4th).
However, the run of upsets was finally ended when North Ballarat (14th) wasn’t able to replicate the feat of Coburg and claim its first win of 2017, going down to Geelong (11th).
Kick for cash at Box HillOne young Peter Jackson VFL spectator won $1000 at half time of the Box Hill Hawks’ clash with the Casey Demons at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday.
Club sponsor Dreamstreet Lending put up the prize for a Kick for Cash competition in which three spectators had three chances to kick a football into the back of a ute.
The young winner’s successful kick was broadcast on Channel 7, which covered Casey’s victory over the Hawks.

VFL Women’s
In other Round 6 results:
- It was a case of master versus apprentice as Darebin cruised to a 66-point win over Box Hill, 11.14 (80) to 2.2 (14). Karen Paxman dominated at the stoppages for the Falcons while Lauren Arnell made a successful return to the VFLW field with three goals.
- Melbourne Uni burned Geelong with a five-goal-to-two second half to return to the winners’ list. A week aft er losing their first game against Darebin, the Mugars stormed the fortress at St Mary’s Oval to return home with an 8.8 (56) to 3.2 (20) win.
- The Eastern Devils remain in touch with the top four aft er overcoming a slow start to end Cranbourne’s winning run. Canadian debutant Lia Vansevenant kicked three goals as the Devils won 12.10 (82) to 3.0 (18) and recaptured some of their best outside ball use.
- St Kilda came home with the win against Seaford but missed a chance at a percentage boost with poor goalkicking, prevailing 7.18 (60) to 3.0 (18). The Sharks were jumped early but were never threatened once they grabbed the lead in the second quarter.
Diamond Creek has won a battle of attrition against the VU Western Spurs to reclaim first position on the Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s ladder, as Callum O’Connor reports. The Creekers went into the match as warm
favourites but several key absentees and the
memory of the Spurs’ upset win in their last meeting
evened the playing field. A match boasting four of
the top five goalkickers in VFL Women’s got off to
an unexpectedly scrappy start as both sides met in
the centre looking to rebound off half-back. Creek
forward Sophie Abbatangelo broke the deadlock
with a purple patch late in the quarter, netting three
goals to push her side’s buff er out to 17 at the first
change.
Spurs coach Debbie Lee sprung a surprise by moving
ruck Harriet Cordner onto the Creek’s main forward
target in Chloe Molloy. In an entertaining battle,
Cordner’s height negated Molloy on the lead but the
leading goalkicker in VFL Women’s kicked two of her
three goals through her work at ground level.
The Spurs placed a player behind the contest at
stoppages in the second quarter and it translated
into clearances as Shelley Scott, Aleisha Newman
and Angelica Gogos broke the lines and delivered
high into their tall forward line. Ainslie Kemp, Sarah
Lampard and Alyssa Mifsud goaled in the Spurs’ best
burst of play that not only saw them take the lead
but showcased a high-tempo, match-winning style.
Diamond Creek pinched back the half-time lead with
late goals to Chloe Molloy and Christina Bernardi.
Diamond Creek held the Spurs at arm’s length in
the third quarter as lesser lights Reni Hicks and
Ash Riddell worked the engine room and Lauren
Morecroft and Tanya Hetherington took control
in defence. A pair of Molloy goals either side of
the three-quarter-time siren pushed the lead out
to 18 and Britt Grech – returning aft er passing a
concussion test following a collision just before half
time – settled the issue with 10 minutes to go. A goal
on the siren to Lisa Williams was the icing on the
cake as Diamond Creek celebrated a 23-point win in
Lauren Brazzale’s 50th game and a return to the top
of the ladder.

The VFL’s top two teams for contested possessions clashed in Round 10, with Essendon emerging
victorious over Williamstown by 15 points. The Bombers lost the contested possession count by three but won 13 more clearances than the Seagulls, led by David Myers (a round-high 12 clearances) and Darcy Parish (six).
13
The VFL’s top two teams for disposals also met in Round 10, with the second-ranked
Collingwood eff ectively denying Port Melbourne the ball in its 37-point triumph. The Borough won just 296 disposals (103 fewer than its season average) while the Magpies had 403 – led by Matt Scharenberg (35 disposals).
103
Important Geelong VFL-lister Sam McLachlan returned for his first game since Round 5 and his grunt
helped the Cats to a 49-point win against North Ballarat. McLachlan recorded game-highs of 11 tackles and seven clearances as Geelong’s hard-nuts won the contested possession count by 25 and clearances by six.
11
Lion cubs learn to winCoburg’s 25-point triumph over Sandringham
in Round 10 wasn’t just its first Peter Jackson
VFL win of 2017 but also the first senior VFL
win of seven of the club’s players.
Facing a team featuring 17 St Kilda-listed players,
the young and mostly inexperienced Lions finished
strongly with four unanswered final-term goals to
stun the Zebras at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
Remarkably, the victory was the first of Blake
Mullane’s 32-game senior VFL career, having
represented Frankston in 22 winless games from
2014-16 before crossing to Piranha Park over the
off -season.
The other six first-time winners all made their VFL
debuts earlier this year: Hayden Blythe, Luke
Bunker, Connor Byrne, Nick Dodge, Sam Lowson
and Aidan Tilley.
So how did senior coach Peter German’s group do it,
even without its leading disposal-winner and midfield
bull Nick Mellington?
Despite going into the game as the VFL’s second-
bottom-ranked team for contested possessions per
game, Mellington’s on-ball partners-in-crime from
throughout 2017 stepped up to help Coburg win the
contested possession count by 15.
Liam Hunt recorded team-highs of 29 disposals and
18 contested possessions as well as a round-high 12
clearances, while Ben Allan had 26 disposals, eight
tackles and five clearances.
But perhaps the most impressive performance was
from 19-year-old Bunker, who put together a game
of 27 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 13 tackles
and 10 clearances.
Bunker was one of six former Northern Knights and 18
former or current TAC Cup players – including seven
former or current Calder Cannons – who ran out for
the Lions on Saturday.
Demonstrating the quality of footballers that come
through Victoria’s elite under-age football pathway,
Coburg defenders Ryan Exon (ex-Oakleigh Chargers),
Sean Gregory (Calder) and Josh Iacobaccio
(Northern) were instrumental in helping keep a
Sandringham line-up boasting AFL-listed talls Josh
Battle, Tom Hickey, Jason Holmes and Rowan
Marshall to eight goals from 57 inside-50s.
Just six weeks prior at Piranha Park, the Lions gave
up a 16-point three-quarter-time lead over the Zebras
to lose by 11 points. It goes to show that with young
footballers learning how to win, earning the first
victory can prove the most diff icult.

Club NotesBOX HILL HAWKS
Round 10 of the VFL season saw Casey Demons visit City Oval in the Channel 7 match of the round. Our
senior side returned fresh aft er the bye and unfortunately went down by 26 points in our first loss for 2017. Brendan Whitecross and Andrew Moore both impressed with ball in hand whilst Anthony Brolic added a further 2 goals to his season tally. Our development team also took on Casey for the second time in a fortnight fresh off the bye. Unfortunately, they were unable to get over the line with Casey running out 38-point winners. Jake Godwin and Dale Hehir kicked two a piece whilst Connor O’Sullivan was named the Hawks best. The Box Hill Hawks women’s team faced off with powerhouse Darebin Falcons away from home in what was a great test for the girls. Whilst the result wasn’t favourable, the girls fought it out until the end eventually going down by 66 points. Emma Mackie continued her great form with another solid display, whilst Lauren Costello & Tamara Luke were named in the best players. This weekend our women’s side host ladder leaders Diamond Creek on Saturday from 11am, with our men’s VFL sides travelling to the Preston City Oval to take on Northern Blues on Sunday. If you can’t get to the game, be sure to follow all the live action on our twitter feed @boxhillhawks or on 3WBC Radio 94.1FM.

WERRIBEE
Congratulations to Daniel Fraser and the development team on their first victory of the season, which saw them
defeat Williamstown at Burbank Oval on Sunday by five points. It was a great reward for the eff ort put in by everyone involved and will hopefully ignite a charge in the second half of the season. The latest 2017 merchandise is available via our online shop, with the new puff er vest having just arrived. You can also check out the latest time lapse camera footage of the Chirnside Park redevelopment on the website. The first floor is starting to take shape, so we are in exciting times. Saturday, September 16 will see our annual Auction Dinner at The Views at Werribee Park Golf Club, so mark the date in your diary. More details will be released shortly. COLLINGWOOD
It was great to return to the winners list with a great victory over Port Melbourne on their home ground
last Saturday. It was a terrific team performance with 23 contributors led by some standout individual eff orts. Thanks for all those diehard VFL pies supporters that attended the game despite the AFL clash. We return home this week to Victoria Park where we welcome the Footscray Bulldogs for today’s clash. With 6 of our last 9 games at home we are looking forward to making a late charge and building on the big week last week. As always we look forward to your exceptional support throughout the season, getting right behind your VFL Magpies at games and online. Be sure to stay tuned to collingwoodfc.com.au for information about our team throughout the season. You can also get involved on twitter with @CollingwoodFC @VFL @7VFL #vflmagpies #PJVFL
COBURG
Utter jubilation at Trevor Barker Oval last weekend as the boys claimed our first win in the Seniors
for 2017. A great result for everyone involved at the club, no doubt there will be more this season. This weekend sees the boys travel up the highway to face Geelong, another big test. The Development League boys have the bye. Our next home game on the 8th of July vs Werribee is a very special occasion as we celebrate Naidoc week. Our players will be wearing some beautifully designed jumpers created by Mandy Nicholson. There will be a Presidents Luncheon with special guest Grant Hansen from the Marngrook Footy Show. This promises to be a great day, please book your spot for the luncheon via email at [email protected] or call the club on (03) 9354 8228. Reverse raff le tickets are also on sale from the club. Call or email the club for more details. Go Burgers!

PORT MELBOURNE
Today, we will be commemorating our inaugural
‘Frank Johnson Tribute Day’. Frank is arguably the greatest player in the history of the Port Melbourne Football Club, and today’s Senior game will be followed with the presentation of the ‘Frank Johnson Tribute Medal’ to the player adjudged to be our club’s best on ground against Casey. It’ll also be great to have several members of the Johnson family in attendance at our President’s Luncheon to celebrate what we hope will be an annual event on our footballing calendar. With that special element attached to today’s game, we certainly hope our boys can put together a much-improved display off the back of last week’s 37-point loss to Collingwood when we clash with the Demons. Congratulations and good luck to reigning Jack McFarlane Medallist Brody Mihocek on chalking up his 50th Senior VFL game this aft ernoon. The Development League had a good win last Saturday and will be hoping to follow that up with another good showing today as well. The weekend of August 12th / 13th will feature back-to-back social events, with both the Fred Cook Tribute Night and our annual Super Draw set to take place in conjunction with our home game against Coburg. Visit our website for all details and information on how to reserve your spots! Best of luck to both sides today – go Borough!
SANDRINGHAM
The Sandringham Football Club would like to congratulate Myke Cook on 100 games for the Club this week. Myke is in his 6th
season for the Zebras and has been hugely influential on and off the field since joining the Club. Well done Myke. We wish you all the best in your 100th game! This weekend we also celebrate the 20 year reunion of the Club’s 1997 premiership. It will be a fantastic occasion reminiscing on stories and highlights of a fantastic year for the Zebras. It would be great to see plenty of supporters and members join us at the President’s Lunch from midday onwards to help celebrate the occasion.
NORTHERN BLUES
Round 11 sees the Northern Blues senior and development sides host
Box Hill Hawks at Preston City Oval. The VFL Blues were not able to get the job done against a strong Richmond outfit on Sunday, whilst the Development sides winning streak came to an end in a close contest with Port Melbourne. Both sides will be looking to get back on the winner’s list today. Our Family Fun Day is coming up and will be held on the 8th of July from 11:30am to 3:30pm. There will be food stalls, an AFL zone, hair colouring and free activities with free admission for all children under 15 years. Get involved in today’s match on twitter with @NBluesfc @VFL #WeMarchNorth. For any additional content on upcoming functions please refer to our events page via http://northernbluesfc.com.au.
