For all those who have left the ArmedForces and had administrative actiontaken against them as a result of apolice caution between December 2008and September 2011, it may be thatthere are grounds for a complaint.

The MOD has written to serving andformer serving personnel because ofchanges to the law which took effect inDecember 2008 that meant such cautionsshould not have been taken into accountafter that date. However, whilst action hasbeen taken to contact those affecteddirectly, it is apparent that the MOD havenot managed to reach some people andthey will be unaware of efforts to contact

them about this issue.

The letters sent out on 10 March 2015informed personnel that they may wish toconsider a service complaint if theybelieve they have been wronged in amatter relating to their Service.Information about service complaints iscontained in the Joint Service Publication831 which can be found on the Gov.UKwebsite see:www.gov.uk/government/publications/jsp-831-redress-of-individual-grievances-service-complaints

Under the relevant legislation, servicecomplaints generally need to besubmitted within three months of the actthat is being complained about. However,this time limit may be extended at thediscretion of the prescribed officerdealing with the complaint if, in all thecircumstances of the case, he or sheconsiders it just and equitable to do so.

Any complaints received in connectionwith this issue will be considered entirelyon their own merits, but the date on

which personnel received a letter or werefirst made aware of this issue may be oneof the factors taken into account whenconsidering whether to allow a complaintto proceed.

Right Management Ltd has beenawarded the Career TransitionPartnership contract.

The new contract will ensure that ArmedForces personnel are well supportedwhen they leave Service and can translatethe skills, experience and qualificationsinto a successful civilian career.

The contract for the programme – knownas the Career Transition Partnership (CTP)– has been awarded to RightManagement, which has successfully runthe scheme for the past decade.Commencing on 1 October 2015 it willrun for at least six years.

Multiple independent programmes havepreviously supported the varying needsof Service leavers. From 1 October 2015,all elements of delivery will be broughtwithin the new CTP contract to providemore seamless support and for the first

time all Service leavers, regardless of howlong they have served or their reason fordischarge, will benefit from the scheme.

The new contract also provides additionalelements which will initially run as two-year trials, the details of which are nowbeing developed:

• The Partner Employment Programme - designed to offer employment support for eligible Service spouses and partners; and

• The Reservists Employment Support Programme – eligible Reservists will be entitled to some job-finding support through this trial, regardless of whether they are in civilian employment or not.

Mark Lancaster, Minister for DefencePersonnel and Veterans, said:

"A career in the Armed Forces provides a

wealth of benefits and transferable skills.Awarding this contract will allow ourService leavers to continue to accessoutstanding support, enabling them totransition successfully into civilian life andapply their skills and attributes in a newenvironment.

“The provisions under the CTP areanother example of our commitment tothe Armed Forces Covenant, ensuringService personnel and their familiesshould not face disadvantage because oftheir Military careers."

Web PORtAL tO SUPPORt VeteRAnS In eSSex

A new web portal which will act as a one stop shop forveterans in Essex has launched.

The Veterans Information Portal has been launched at the RoyalBritish Legion pop-in centre in Colchester.

The aim of the portal is to overcome the difficulties in reachingthe veteran community and to assist Armed Forces veterans inestablishing their independence. The portal provides a range ofpractical information and support covering employment,education and training, health and welfare, finances, housing,and product services and discounts.

The portal has been designed for simple replication, and formsthe basis for all 15 Councils in Essex to undertake Covenantactivity as part of a provider community. It will also offer theability for all Corporate Covenant signatories to ‘pitch what theypledge’ by registering and subscribing to become a Provider.

The portal was funded by a Community Covenant grant of£38,000 with an intention of rolling it out across the country.

Cllr Derrick Louis TD, Chairman of the Essex Civil MilitaryPartnership Board, said: “As a member of the Army Reserve myself, I know of manypeople who have needed assistance when rejoining ‘civvystreet’ and I really hope this new portal will reach out to them sothey can find the support they need and which they deserve.”

NEWSCALLInG ALL VJ DAY VeteRAnSA programme of commemorativeevents is planned for this year’s 70thanniversary of VJ Day. The events paytribute to all those who served in theUK Armed Forces in the Far East,including those who served in thefamous 14th Army in Burma, whohelped secure victory. Prisoners of Warand civilian internees from the conflictwill also be recognised.

In London, the following national events will take place on Saturday, 15 August with members of the publicinvited to observe the service and parade:

• 2.00pm - a flypast and traditionalDrumhead Service on Horse Guards Parade attended by senior political and Military representatives from the UK and her Allies, veterans of the Far East campaign, former Prisoners of War, civilian internees and their families

followed by current members of the Armed Forces leading veterans and their families in a VJ Parade down Whitehall.

• There will also be a reception for Veterans and their families, hosted by The Royal British Legion.

• The Royal British Legion is sending invitations to all major Service associations including the Burma Star Association, which will include accreditation forms.

• At the National Memorial Arboretum on Saturday 15 August, The Malayan Volunteers Group will hold a service in the Millenium Chapel followed by wreath laying, and then on Sunday 16 August, The Far East Prisoner of War (FEPOW) Memorial Building will be rededicated followed by wreath laying at the FEPOW Grove. Following on from the article published in Veterans World Issue 34 about the 2014 ArmedForces Covenant annual report, Chris Wilcox fromthe MOD Armed Forces Covenant team, provides afurther update.

I think it’s really important to re-iterate the keyprinciples that underpin the Armed Forces Covenant,because they are enshrined in law, and they driveeverything the Government does to provide thesupport and recognition veterans dedication andsacrifice deserves.

Those who serve in the Armed Forces, whetherRegular or Reserve, those who have served in the past,and their families, should face no disadvantagecompared to other citizens in the provision of publicand commercial services.

Special consideration is appropriate in some cases,especially for those who have given the most, such asthe injured and the bereaved.

The Covenant recognises that the whole of society has a moral obligation to support the Armed Forces Community and establishes how they should expect to be treated. We work closely withOther Government Departments, Local Authorities,the Scottish, Welsh and Northern IrelandAdministrations, the business world, FamiliesFederations, and Service charities to help make thishappen.

The Armed Forces Covenant is supported by theCommunity and Corporate Covenants. The Community Covenant, encourages LocalAuthorities to support the Armed Forces Community in their area and promote publicunderstanding and awareness. Every Local Authority in Great Britain has signed a CommunityCovenant. The Corporate Covenant is a pledge ofsupport from the business world to members of theArmed Forces Community who work for and use theirservices.

What’s being done to help Veterans?

• £40 million has been awarded to 16 Veteran’saccommodation projects across the UK.

• We have, through the Department of Health,established a long-term solution for prostheticsprovision, including a network of multi-disciplinaryprosthetic and rehabilitation centres in England.The Welsh Government has agreed to issue aDefence Privilege Card for Veterans in Wales, theyhave been working collaboratively with the DefenceDiscount Scheme to promote the card.

• In Scotland, a Veteran’s Commissioner has beenappointed to help raise the profile of Veteranswithin Scottish society. His strategy and work planfor 2015 will focus on improving support forhousing and employability.

• The Scottish Government increased funding for theScottish Veterans Fund to £120,000 per annum from2013-14. They have also given £200,000 over threeyears to Veterans Scotland.

• In Northern Ireland, a Veterans support forum(along the lines of COBSEO – The Confederation ofService Charities) has been set up with the intentionof bringing together MOD, Service Charities, andVeterans support organisations to pool informationand resources to ensure those in need can beeffectively signposted towards the most effectivehelp.

• The commitment of £75 million of LIBOR fines overthe next five years to support Military charities andother good causes [including a £25 millionhealthcare fund for aged veterans].

the Community Covenant.

In early 2015, we hosted three National CommunityCovenant conferences in Bristol, Leicester andManchester. We met with representatives from LocalAuthorities, other Government Departments, theArmed Forces Community, Service Charities andFamilies Federations. As well as hearing about theexcellent programmes that were being delivered, wediscussed how to improve support for ex-Servicepersonnel, and the challenges faced such as; resourceconstraints and the pressure on local resources thatrebasing will bring.

The messages we took away from these events were;organisations, particularly Local Authorities, want tounderstand better the size and complexity of theirlocal Veterans community; they want to do more toreach out to veterans, but they would really welcomeit if veterans would do more to reach out to them.Also, better communications are important so that if

veterans need support, they can be signposted in theright direction. We need to make sure that we spreada consistent policy message about the Covenantthroughout all Local Authorities, so that whenveterans approach theirs, they already understand the challenges veterans may face and how theCovenant applies to the services they provide. We willcontinue working closely with them to providesupport as they deliver the Covenant in their localcommunities.

the Corporate Covenant.

Over 600 companies and organisations have signedthe Corporate Covenant. Recent key signatories haveincluded Vodafone, construction service providersLaing O’Rourke and The Lloyds Banking Group. Thepledges they have made will have a positive impacton the Armed Forces Community.

We will continue working closely with thesecompanies to hold them to their pledges. In themeantime, we would encourage veterans, to letservice providers and Local Authorities know that theyare a veteran. This is, of course, entirely voluntary, but if veterans do tell their Local Authority, or theirNHS GP for example, it will help them provide a betterservice.

SUPPORtInG, enAbLInGAnD eMPOWeRInG

Take2 has been designed to support vulnerableformer Service personnel who are finding it difficult toadapt to life after finishing their period of Service.Work experience, education, training, volunteering,life skills lessons and wellbeing support are availableto all participants. Additionally, the project will alsobe able to offer housing to those struggling to find asafe and secure place of residence.

All participants will be supported according to theirindividual needs and aims to help each personachieve long term employment and housing security.The wide range of support also encouragesindependence, wellbeing and confidence.

This is a 12-month pilot programme which, uponsuccessful completion of an evaluation, has hugepotential to become a permanent part of the supportnetwork for former Service personnel. What makes itdifferent from other schemes is the encouragementfor participants to become actively involved in theprocess of their own life change.

Anyone who has served in the Army and lives in or hasconnections to Sheffield is eligible to apply.Participants do not need any qualifications orexperience to take part and need to be able to attenda minimum of two days per week over a twelve weekprogramme.

The project currently has two mentors; Richard Parkerand Steve Lowe. When asked about his involvementwith the Project, Richard Parker said, “I have

experienced some of the difficulties faced when leaving the Army and feel that services need to be easier to access. Within Sheffield, it was very difficultto find appropriate support. Take2 offers the completepackage that veterans need and I am really pleased tooffer mentor support and share my experiences withpeople leaving the Forces.”

Widows, widowers and surviving civil partners of all members ofthe Armed Forces Pension Scheme will now retain their pensionsfor life.

PenSIOnS FOR LIFe

From 1 April 2015 the rules on remarriage for allForces widows have been harmonised so that they areno longer forced to surrender their pensions shouldthey decide to remarry, cohabit or form a civilpartnership after this date.

The decision highlights the Government’scommitment to the Armed Forces Covenant byrecognising the difficulties many partners of ArmedForces personnel face in earning their ownoccupational pensions, often due to having torelocate their homes within the UK as well asoverseas.

The rule change means that all widows will retaintheir Armed Forces pension for life regardless of anychange to their social status. This includes; widows

currently in receipt of a Forces families pension underthe Armed Forces Pension Scheme 75 (AFPS 75) andall war widows receiving a pension under the WarPensions Scheme, and all those married to AFPS 75personnel (either serving or retired) who may yetbecome widows.

Although the change will not lead to thereinstatement of pensions for those who have alreadysurrendered them until their current relationship ends(for whatever reason), from 1 April 2015 the meanstest used to decide whether AFPS ’75 widows’pensions will be restored or not, has been abolished.Most importantly, those who previously applied forrestoration of their AFPS ’75 pension and wererefused under the means test, and who were not in amarriage or cohabiting from 1 April 2015, can re-apply to Veterans UK for restoration of their widow’spension effective from 1 April 2015. Restoration willbe automatic upon re-application.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said:

“It’s vital that we do right by those who put their liveson the line for their country – that’s why thisGovernment enshrined the Armed Forces Covenant inlaw. These changes reflect the huge commitmentsurviving civil partners of members of the ArmedForces at a disadvantage.”

This change has come into force in conjunction withthe new Armed Forces Pensions Scheme 15.

When people think of wounded or sickServicemen and women they often think ofthose recovering from severe physical andpsychological issues caused by IeD-blasts andfirefights, but this isn’t the full story.

Help for Heroes beneficiaries have long been tellingus that there is another internal battle faced bycountless veterans and Armed Forces families onthe home front, which has now been backed up byrecognised research.

Stress, worry and low mood can affect anyone in avariety of ways – it can be a sudden lack ofmotivation or interest in everyday activities; anuncontrollable sense of worry or fear; it could bephysical tension in the head or shoulders, or anynumber of other symptoms.

Help for Heroes’ new psychological wellbeingService, H4H Hidden Wounds, can help veterans andservice families with many of these common mentalhealth issues by teaching skills to help understandand manage their emotions.

Free and confidential support is delivered byPsychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) byphone, Skype or face-to-face (in Wiltshire andYorkshire), so that help can be easily accessed fromaround the country.

Dave Latimer, 54, started to feel depressed shortlyafter leaving the Navy in 2001. Often working fromhome, Dave would struggle with loneliness andsleeplessness which impacted his work. He wouldoften express his emotions through frustration andanger, distancing him from his family and friends.

When he burst into tears on the way to work oneday, Dave knew he needed a helping hand. Hereached out to Help for Heroes and was given anappointment with H4H Hidden Wounds within days.

He says: “The first time I went to one of the Help forHeroes Recovery Centres, I felt like a fraud. I haven’tlost a limb and I’m not sitting in a wheelchair… butH4H Hidden Wounds showed me that it’s just asimportant to get help for mental health problems asit is for physical ones.

“However old you are, pick up the phone and getsupport. What’s the worst that could happen?”

Dave is now working on managing his depressionby keeping a diary focussing particularly on howeach activity, both routine and leisure, makes himfeel to understand and predict his emotions morereadily. Using a workbook and regular sessions withhis PWP, Dave has learnt a series of tools that can beused in everyday situations to rationalise what he’sfeeling and communicate this to those around him.

Dave’s story illustrates one type of support deliveredby H4H Hidden Wounds to help individuals with arange of psychological wellbeing challenges, suchas anxiety, depression and stress.

Support is available to veterans, their families andthe families of those currently serving and can beaccessed either by self-referral or third party referral.The team also works closely with otherorganisations and charities to make sure thatanyone in need of mental health support receivesthe right help.

national express have committed tosupport the Armed Forces andVeterans as part of their ‘MilitaryPromise’. through this they haveformed an association with thePoppy Factory.

As part of its work with the charity, which providesemployment support for disabled veterans andproduces millions of Remembrance poppies every year,National Express is supporting Poppy Factory ‘clients’with tailored job interview training sessions and paidwork placements at coach stations across the UK.Veterans then get the chance to interview for a positionwith the coach company.

Often Service leavers, some of whom may never havehad a job interview prior to signing up, find thetransition to civilian life challenging and the NationalExpress scheme is designed to explain the interviewprocess and give people support around CV building,as well as work experience.

The beauty of the scheme, which is a first for both ThePoppy Factory and National Express, is seen in itsinnovative blend of practical and theoretical experiencefor veterans. Indeed, The Poppy Factory has now takenforward this model as a best-practice example to workwith other businesses.

Staff at National Express have embraced the schemeengaging staff throughout the business. Veterans havebenefited from training sessions which have beendelivered in Birmingham, Manchester, London andLeeds and work placements at some of NationalExpress’ busiest sites.

One such person who has benefited is Dwayne Deare.

Dwayne, served as an infantry soldier in Afghanistanbefore being discharged after an IED explosion left himwith serious injuries. He spent over a year in

rehabilitation undergoing intensive physiotherapy butfound life difficult after being discharged. Dwayneregistered with The Poppy Factory who organised forhim to attend a National Express open day. He receivedinterview skills training and a paid placement soonfollowed at the firm’s Start Hill depot near StanstedAirport.

Dwayne said, “Being in the army was my life and it wasshattering to go from having a career and knowingyour path, to being injured and out of work. Myphysical recovery was a long process but it also took along time to figure of what I wanted to do as myoriginal life plan was derailed.

“Working with The Poppy Factory has helped me turnmy life back on track and they've put me in touch withcompanies like National Express whose training schemehas given me real confidence. The work experience wasfantastic, I was welcomed as part of the team and itreally helped me gain an insight into re-entering work,almost like try before you buy. I now know that I wantto be a coach driver, I've thought long and hard aboutmy options and realise I like being outside, not at a deskso the freedom of the road and the chance to seedifferent places really appeals. It’s been a long road butI'm so excited about the next chapter in my life”.

Sheffield Coach Station Manager Nick Edwards explainsworking with veterans is a two-way street forbusinesses, that can gain from the tremendous skillsthey have to offer. Nick, himself an RAF veteran, hassupported the workshops by helping to outline thechallenges common to all veterans on leaving Service.

Nick said, “Life in the Armed Forces equips you withloads of transferrable skills but often people don’trealise it. In Service, you can get thrown into literallyanything and you need to rise to the challenge, thinkon your feet and pull together as part of a team. Thissort of initiative is hugely beneficial for businesses. Itmakes me really proud that National Express haslaunched this scheme and it’s fantastic to join forceswith The Poppy Factory to help support veterans.”

The scheme is part of a wider package of benefits,including guaranteed job interviews to Service leavers,offered by National Express as part of its ‘MilitaryPromise’ to honour the commitment it made when itwas handpicked by the Government as the firstcompany to sign its Armed Forces Corporate Covenant.

A former Royal Military Policeman who was injured inAfghanistan is getting his life back on track with thehelp of a sailing charity.

they say life is like sailing as you can use thewind to go in any direction, and it’s a sayingveteran Roy newport found to be true when hediscovered the Turn to Starboard charity.

Roy, 42, suffered a spinal compression injury afterhis vehicle went over a landmine in 2010. Inaddition to living with the physical effects of theincident, he suffered from severe post traumaticstress disorder (PTSD), which he found impacted onhis recovery process and the lives of his wife andtwo young children.

After being medically discharged in 2014 andserving at Hasler Company, the Royal Navy’srehabilitation unit, Roy was introduced to Turn toStarboard, a sailing charity based in Falmouth. Thecharity is founded from the belief that sailing has atherapeutic and calming effect on participants. Hereceived funding from Help for Heroes and thePoppy Factory.

Roy said, “At first, I couldn’t even talk to anyone, I really struggled. I didn’t know what was wrong

with me; I’d have long panic attacks and nocontrol over my own body. Once I discovered Turn to Starboard, I found thatsailing had a therapeutic effect and there’s notime to sit and ponder. Everything iscompletely different when you are at sea towhen you’re on land.”

Turn to Starboard uses the Royal YachtingAssociation (RYA) sailing courses to supportserving, retired personnel and their families andlast year helped 139 former Armed Forces personnel get out on to the water. The organisation additionally offers training courses forveterans to gain internationally recognisedqualifications from the RYA, which can potentiallyhelp veterans start new careers anywhere in theworld.

People like Roy and their families are assisted onaccompanied sailing trips lasting from a few hoursto a few days. Sailing from Falmouth, destinationsinclude France, the Isles of Scilly and excursionsalong the Cornish coast.

Sailing is known to provide elements thatmirror the ethos of Armed Forces life, such asteam cohesion and leadership skills. This canhelp participants gradually adjust to civilian lifewhile gaining comfort from those in a similarsituation.

Roy added, “I’m at a point now where I cancontrol how I feel and have a normalconversation but it took a long time to getthere. I’m now working towards gainingYachtmaster qualifications and I’m currentlyacting as a volunteer co-ordinator and mentor.A lot of the guys on the scheme have PTSD andit is encouraging for them to see how far I’vecome.”

Turn to Starboard was created from thepersonal experiences of its founder; SquadronLeader (Retired) Shaun Pascoe in 2012. Shaunserved on numerous tours during his sixteenyears in the RAF, including Kosovo, SierraLeone, Iraq and repeatedly to Afghanistan asOfficer Commanding (OC) of the MedicalEmergency Response Team (MERT).

MERT is the medical team that flies aheadusing the Chinook aircraft to retrieve thosesignificantly injured, often under heavy enemyfire. The high-intensity nature of his operationalwork meant the transition on coming homebecame an increasing challenge.

Shaun decided to spend his resettlement time

and money on an RYA Yachtmaster Offshorecourse and within two weeks of sailing he feltin a better place.

Shaun said, “Learning new skills, achievingqualifications, forging new friendships andexperiencing adventure is what we offer and itis incredibly powerful in aiding recovery. We’vehad veterans complete our courses saying theyfound an increased sense of purpose and pridewhich ultimately boosts their self-esteem.People sail with us to benefit from a sharedexperience, helping them re-engage afterleaving the Service.

“We also help individuals who are completingoperational tours or those requiringresettlement assistance through a Zero to Herotraining programme designed to buildconfidence and self esteem through learningnew skills. This is a sixteen week programmewith flexible, expert tuition meeting theindividual needs of participants who areguided through nineteen RYA courses,culminating in an RYA Yachtmaster andcommercially endorsed Cruising Instructorqualification.”

The charity has recently launched a campaignto find a Cornwall based veteran for ascholarship award, worth more than £8000.

the RAF benevolent Fund has launched a newadvice and advocacy service to help veteransnavigate the many welfare benefits, nHS andlocal council services. the new scheme aims toidentify the benefits and care services to which aveteran, his or her partner, and dependent familymembers are entitled to and, if necessary, takeup the case directly on their behalf.

Veteran RAF Regiment Gunner Malcolm “Geordie”Wallace said, “Mum’s health took a turn for theworse and taking care of her was my first priority.We left our jobs and home and moved from theShetlands to Northumberland to be closer to herand our family. The RAF Benevolent Fund’s Adviceand Advocacy Service really helped us land on ourfeet and made a difficult time so much easier.”

Paul Hughesdon, RAF Benevolent Fund Director ofWelfare and Policy, said, “We know that youngerveterans, such as those who served in Afghanistan,have very different needs from older veterans, whoperhaps fought in WWII or served in the RAF duringtheir National Service years. Our new service is ableto provide advice on the benefits and services

available to each individual – from retraining andchildcare assistance to funding for homeadaptations and care home fees.”

The RAF Benevolent Fund has seen a growing needfor such a service and will offer assistance to theentire RAF family, from Afghanistan veteranstransitioning to ‘civvy street’ to the National Serviceveterans who need elder care services.

Anyone who served in the RAF is eligible to use thisservice; there is no requirement to already be inreceipt of benefits or demonstrate financial need.Additionally, carers of elderly veterans are welcome to reach out on their behalf and the serviceis available to widows and widowers of RAFveterans.

Paul Hughesdon also added, “RAF veterans andtheir families served this country and it is a shamethat all too often they don’t receive the benefits andservices to which they are really entitled. Often,they are just grateful to receive some support fromthe State, not all of the support available. This newservice aims to identify their entitlements and, ifnecessary, advocate on the veteran’s behalf tosecure them.”

the Royal british Legion (RbL) charityhas opened the doors of a new Pop InCentre located at 19 -21 High Street, Aylesbury,buckinghamshire.

The centre offers a welcoming space for Servicepersonnel, veterans and their families to get practicalhelp and advice. Members of the public are also welcometo find out more about the wide range of services andcommunity activities provided by the Legion. The centreis manned by a dedicated team of experienced staff andtrained volunteers.

Visitors receive practical advice on accessing servicesprovided by the Legion, statutory bodies, Militarycharities and other support organisations. All enquiriesare treated in confidence and the centre can offer adviceand support about a wide range of topics, including:

• War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS)

• Benevolent/Welfare assistance• Benefits and Money advice• Poppy Breaks/Respite Breaks• Housing Problems• Health/Mental Health issues and Advocacy• Employment and training opportunities

The staff on hand in the Pop-In Centre can help visitorsaccess the RBL’s knowledge website for general enquiries.

Additionally, the Centre also acts as a useful hub tospringboard a variety of other ventures. A recent successwas a partnering arrangement with a local theatre tostage a successful and thought provoking theatrical

production using injured Service personnel and veteransto ‘tell their story’. Plans are progressing to draw in newpartnerships with local agencies to use the Pop-In Centre.

The RBL South East Midlands area office can be found onthe first floor above the Centre and covers six counties;they are Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire,Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.

For those who are having difficulty getting to the Centrethere are a number of outreach offices locatedthroughout the area providing advice and assistance tothose in need. Needless to say, the new Pop-In andoutreach offices do not detract from the Legion usingexperienced caseworkers to visit people in their ownhomes where needed.

WeLFARe StAFF OUt AnDAbOUt On ARMeD FORCeSDAY 2015the 7th annual Armed Forces Day took place on27 June 2015. More than 150 events were held tomark the occasion across the country,celebrating and honouring the many men andwomen of the Armed Forces, both past andpresent.

The Veterans UK Veterans Welfare Service (VWS) sentstaff representatives to attend 10 of these eventsacross the Country; one of which was the mainevent in Guildford that was attended by His RoyalHighness The Duke of York and the Prime MinisterDavid Cameron.

Celebrations began with a service at GuildfordCathedral attended by Rob Rowntree, Head of VWS,at which the Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, gave a reading. A parade led by more than 900 Service personnel, veterans and cadets thenmarched through the historic heart of Guildford,from the High Street to the outdoor events arena atStoke Park, and into the Veterans Village Arena.

Representing VWS within the Veterans Village Arenawere Jim Burns, Sandy Andrews, Cheryl Blanchard,Sarah Thompson and Andrew Hiscutt who allprovide welfare support to veterans across theSouth of England. The staff were on hand providingveterans with advice and guidance on a range of

topics from War Pension and Armed Forces Pensionsschemes, Entitlements, Armed ForcesCompensations Scheme and where requiredprovided sign-posting to all other areas of welfarethat a veteran or the veterans community mayrequire.

Jim Burns and Sarah Thompson who together co-ordinated the VWS presence at the Guildford eventsaid, “It was great to see lots of people attended theevent to show their support to our Armed Forcesand veterans and, of course, the beautiful weatheron the day helped. It was interesting to see all theother charities and organisations that have been setup to help support our Armed Forces past andpresent and to also be able to see the different rolesthat our Armed Forces undertake. “

Andrew Hiscutt, a Regional Welfare Manager and aVeteran himself said, “VWS set-up a Veterans UKbranded gazebo in an action-packed event and metwith many veterans who were so pleased to meetwith us. Some old and bold who just wanted tothank us for our assistance in the past and somewho were not aware of our existence.”
