    Design Features

Each water source heat pump is factory assembled andtested for reliability. Servicing is done easily through largeremovable access panels to internal components. A full heightaccess panel on the back side allows access to the compressorand fan section. An upper front panel allows access to the fanmotor. Two lower panels allow access to the compressor/controlbox section. Each unit is shipped on a wooden skid to facilitatemoving with a forklift and covered with corrugated material formaximum protection.

Five unique cabinet sizes make up our 1/2 through 5 ton(2.1 through 15.0 kW) vertical heat pump product line. The resultis a consistent cabinet shape with the lowest possible profile. The consistent shape makes layout simple; the water, condensate and duct connection locations are the same for allunits.

For maximum flexibility, each unit is available in either aleft-hand or right-hand return air arrangement to provide theoptimum piping location and service access.

The cabinet is constructed of unpainted, G-60 galvanizedsteel. Large panels are provided for access to the fan/motorcompartment and the compressor/control compartment. Theinteriors of the top and side panels and the bottom of the unitare covered with 1⁄2" thick (13 mm), 11⁄2 lb. (681 g) density coatedglass fiber. The 1" (25 mm) thick filter is supported by factorymounted brackets which allow for face, side or bottom removal.

The water and condensate connections protrude through theoutside of the cabinet for maximum accessibil ity.

The water connections are FPT type for easy connection toflexible hoses. The large 7/8" (22 mm) O.D. condensateconnection provides trouble-free condensate removal.

The electrical components are located in the compressorsection of the unit. Holes are provided on the side of the cabinetto facilitate main power and low voltage control wiring throughseparate holes. All wiring connections are made internal to thecabinet for maximum safety. Each unit is rated to accept timedelay fuses or HACR circuit breakers for branch circuitovercurrent protection.

The control box is accessible through a panel and can bemoved without access to the side of the unit to allow for easiercompressor removal. The control box houses the majoroperating electrical controls including the control circuit board, transformer, compressor relay and fan relay. Each componentis accessible for service or replacement.

Two unique control systems are offered – Mark IV/AC orMicroTech™ 2000. Each utilizes a printed circuit board. Theprinted circuit board approach allows for direct quick-connectwiring to the controlled components making for “clean” wiring. Each control board receives power from a large capacity 50 VAtransformer. The control board has a built-in terminal strip forlow voltage control wiring connections. The Mark IV/AC controlboard provides the basic control functions along with thenumerous advanced features. MicroTech 2000 is an advanceddirect digital control system. See the “Controls” section for moredetailed information.

Refrigeration systemThe refrigeration system includes a hermetic compresser, reversing valve, water-to-refrigerant coaxial heat exchanger, capillary tube expansion device, airside coil, safety controls, and both high and low refrigerant service valves. Two panelsallow for access to the compressor, reversing valve and safetycontrols.

The compressor is isolated from the bottom panel with rubberisolators. The compressor junction box is always located towardthe front access panel.

The reversing valve is located so as not to interfere withcompressor removal through the access panel. The valve isenergized in the heating mode and will “fail-safe” to the coolingmode which is the predominate mode of operation.

The two heat exchanger components incorporate the mostrecent transfer technologies. The coaxial heat exchanger has acopper inner tube and a steel outer tube and is designed for amaximum heat transfer at normal and low water flow rates withminimum pressure drop. The large face area coil has coppertubes and aluminum fins. The fins are lanced and the tubeshave finned edges on the inside to enhance heat transfercapabilities.

Safety controls include low suction temperature (freezestat)and high pressure switches to lock out compressor operationat extreme conditions. The low suction temperature switchprovides the most reliable protection against freezeup of thecoaxial heat exchanger without the nuisance trips associatedwith low pressure switches which only protect against lowrefrigerant charge. The safety controls can only be reset fromthe main disconnect switch and not from the wall thermostatwhich prevents unauthorized reset of the unit, which maypermanently damage a major component.

Fan sectionThe fan section includes the fan housing, fan wheel, fan motorand drain pan. The fan section is separated from the compressorsection with an insulated drain pan and divider panel formaximum sound attenuation. The upper panel provides serviceaccess to the fan motor. The separate front fan and compressorsection access panels allow for fan operation and compressoroperation checkout without air bypass around the coil.

The drain pan is of ample height to allow for self-priming ofthe condensate trap. All of this provides trouble-free condensateremoval.

The fan motor is a multispeed, PSC type with integralmounting brackets and thermal overload protection. The motoris isolated from the fan housing for minimum vibrationtransmission. Unit sizes 015 and larger have a terminal strip onthe motor for simple motor speed change without going backto the control box. All the fan/motor assemblies have aremovable orifice ring on the housing to accommodate motorand fan wheel removal without disconnecting the ductwork. Thefan housing protrudes through the cabinet allowing adequatematerial for connection of a flexible duct.

Optional factory installed featuresExtended range units are available for applications requiringheating operation at reduce entering conditions. The extendedrange unit will operate at 40oF (5oC) minimum entering watertemperature and 40oF (5oC) minimum entering air temperature.

The unit is modified with a suction line accumulator, insulatedcoaxial heat exchanger, insulated refrigerant tubing, compressorcrankcase heater and a lower setting on the freezestat safetyswitch.

The extended range system has advantages in closed loopapplications. The ability to operate at reduced water conditionsallows the loop water temperature to fall to 40oF (5oC) beforesupplemental (boiler) heat has to be added to the loop, thustaking full advantage of the heat available in the water loopobtained from internal heat gains. The result is reduced boileroperation which means reduced energy consumption.

lockout due to one of these faults, and the cause of the faultcondition has been alleviated, energizing the O-terminal for10 seconds or more will force the Mark IV board to clear thelockout. A unit power cycle can also be used to clear an auto-matic lockout if the conditions causing the fault have beenalleviated.

    ■ Fault Retry To Minimize Nuisance Trips – The Fault Retryfeature helps to minimize nuisance trips of automatic lockoutscaused by high-pressure and/or low-temperature (in heating)faults. This feature clears faults the first two times they occurwithin a 24-hour period and triggers an automatic lockout onthe 3rd fault. The retry count is reset to zero every 24 hours.

NOTE: Most unit fault conditions are the result of operating theequipment outside the unit specifications.

    ■ Safety Control — The Mark IV/AC board receives sepa-rate input signals from the refrigerant high pressure switchand the low suction temperature (freezestat) switch. If a highpressure situation occurs while in the heating mode, com-pressor operation is suspended. In a low temperature situ-ation, the unit goes into a defrost cycle where the unit is putinto cooling operation for 60 seconds until the coaxial heatexchanger is free of ice. If a low temperature situation oc-curs while in the cooling mode, the low temperature switchwill cycle unit OFF and ON, as the fault is related to air flow. Each switch generates its own unique LED status and out-put is available to a “fault” LED at the thermostat if eithersituation exists.

    Mark IV/AC LED Fault Outputs

The Mark IV/AC control system allows for the following op-tional field installed controls and accessories:

    ■ Boilerless System Kit — Eliminates the need for a boilerin the system water loop. The boilerless system control boardsenses the entering water temperature to the unit and locksout compressor heating operation if the water temperaturefalls below the adjustable setpoint. Contacts are providedto energize a field supplied electric heater downstream ofthe unit on a call for heating.

    ■ Motorized Valve — Used for variable pumping applications. The valve is wired in the compressor circuit and the valve ispiped in the return water line from the unit. The valve openswhen the compressor is on and closes when the compres-sor is off. Valve is rated for 300 psig (2070 kPa).

Control Features – Mark IV/AC control systemThe Mark IV/AC control system is a microprocessor-based

control board conveniently located in the unit control box foraccessibility. A 14 pin low voltage terminal strip provides all thenecessary terminals for field connections. LED’s are located infront for quick inspection. The board can be wired for 24 volt ACoutput to the wall thermostat by using terminals R & C. If a DCvoltage output to the thermostat is required, use terminals F &V. This allows the customer a choice of control output voltage toaccommodate controls by others or accessories.

The Mark IV/AC control system has the following operatingfeatures (assumes cycle fan operation-not continuous):

    ■ Start-up — The unit will not operate until all the inputsand safety controls are checked for normal conditions.

    ■ Cooling mode — On a call for cooling, the compressor andfan will start 0 to 32 seconds later. When satisfied, the compressor and fan shut off immediately.

    ■ Heating Mode — On a call for heating, the reversing valveis energized after 60 seconds and the compressor and fanstart immediately. When the load is satisfied, the compres-sor and fan shut off immediately. The reversing valve is de-energized 60 seconds later to eliminate “swish” noise and toallow the compressor to always start up at equalizedpressure.

    ■ Short Cycle Protection & Random Start — Each time thecompressor stops, a new random compressor start delay timebetween 180 and 212 seconds is generated. This preventscompressor short cycling and prevents units from startingsimultaneously after coming back from an unoccupied cycle.

    ■ Unoccupied Mode — A simple “grounded” signal, no powersource required, puts the unit into the unoccupied mode fornight setback operation. The fan shuts off and the unit is putunder control from the setback bulb of the thermostat. Theday heating thermostat control and cooling is locked out. Aunique LED status is generated for indication of the unoccu-pied mode. On a call for heating, the fan and the compressorwill start after 60 seconds.

    ■ Override Mode — A switch on the deluxe thermostat can beactivated during the unoccupied mode to put the unit backinto the occupied mode for two hours for after-hours heatingor cooling.

    ■ Pump Restart — A signal from the Mark IV/AC board to ourLoop Control Panel will restart the water circulating loop pumpwhen the compressor is energized. The signal can be “daisychained” between 200 units.

    ■ Load Shed — Again, a simple grounded signal puts the unitinto the load shed mode. The compressor shuts off and thefan will start on a call for heating and cooling. A unique LEDstatus is generated for indication of the load shed mode.

    ■ Brownout Protection — The Mark IV/AC board measuresthe input voltage and will suspend compressor and fan op-eration if the voltage falls below 80% of the normal line volt-age. A unique LED status is generated and output is avail-able to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

    ■ Unit Shutdown — Again, a simple grounded signal puts theunit into the shutdown mode. Compressor andfan operations are suspended. A unique LED statusis generated and an output signal is made available for con-nection to a “fault” LED at the thermostat.

    ■ Condensate Overflow Protection — The Mark IV/AC boardincorporates a liquid sensor at the top of the drain pan. Sens-ing water, cooling operation is suspended. A unique LED sta-tus is generated and output is available to a “fault” LED atthe thermostat. Heating operation is not suspended.

    ■ Remote Reset of Automatic Lockouts – The Remote Re-set feature provides the means to remotely reset automaticlockouts generated by high-pressure and/or low-temperature(in heating) faults. When the Mark IV board is in automatic

Safety alarms include visual and audible notification of a lowwater temperature, high water temperature, or no flow condi-tion. Upon activation of any alarm, the LWC has contacts to sendout an emergency shutdown signal. A remote alarm panel isavailable for alarm notification at a remote location.

The LWC interfaces with Mark IV/AC controlled heat pumpunits for a low cost control system. The Mark IV/AC board canreceive occupied/unoccupied time clock schedule outputs andan emergency shutdown signal due to an alarm condition. TheLWC can receive a signal (pump restart) from the Mark IV/ACboard to energize and override the main circulating pump, if it isscheduled off, whenever a compressor operates from a call fornight setback heat or from a call for heating or cooling duringthe two-hour override cycle. Simple “daisy chain” wiring is re-quired between Mark IV/AC board terminals.

Optional Monitor software allows the operator to monitor andcontrol setpoints of the LWC at an IBM PC by direct connectingor through a phone line. Includes system graphics.

Additional features include built-in test mode to simulate allcontrol modes, precool cycle to start heat rejection earlier forundersized boilers, preheat cycle to start heat addition earlierfor undersized towers, keypad password protection, and holi-day schedules.

Loop Water ControllerThe Loop Water Controller (LWC) is a stand-alone, factory

programmed and tested microprocessor-based controller pro-viding control of the heat rejection, heat addition stages and thewater circulating pumps for control of a water source heat pumpsystem through solid-state output relays.

The controller has a keypad/display to view all status condi-tions, temperatures, setpoints and monitor/alarm conditions. Thedisplay is two lines by sixteen columns in a supertwist LCD for-mat.

The LWC can be applied to control a traditional single loopsystem; closed circuit evaporative cooler, boiler, primary pumpand standby pump; or a two-loop system with the heat pumploop having a boiler, primary pump and standby pump sepa-rated by a water-to-water heat exchanger to a condenser waterloop with an open cooling tower, primary (stage 1) pump and astandby (stage 2) pump. The pumps can be operated as “auto”or “manual” lead-lag. Pump sequencing allows the standby pumpto automatically come on upon failure of the lead pump as indi-cated by a flow switch.

The LWC controls heating and cooling stages from the heatpump loop supply temperature and from the outdoor air tem-perature for reset of the heat addition setpoint, if desired. Otherlocations can be temperature monitored: heat pump loop returntemperature, entering and leaving tower temperatures, enteringand leaving boiler temperatures, and storage tank temperature.

Clock schedule outputs are built-in to (1) time control theheat pump circulating pump for shutdown at night (can be re-started if outdoor air temperature falls) and (2) provide program-mable time schedules for heat pump unit occupied/unoccupiedoperation. A maximum of six time clock schedule outputs areavailable.

Two LWC models are available. LWC-16 and LWC-24 pro-vide 9 and 17 configurable outputs, respectively, choosing be-tween heat rejection (cooling) stages, heat addition (heating)stages and time clock schedules. Each heating and cooling out-put has individual on and off (differential) setpoint adjustmentcapability. Modulating heating and cooling output signals areavailable to control tower bypass valve and two-way or three-way boiler heat addition valves.

Supply and Return Water HosesSupply and return water hoses are available as standard or

fire-rated construction in 2 and 3 foot lengths. Standard con-struction hoses are made of rubber hose and steel fittings. Fire-rated hoses have synthetic poly-mer core with an outer ratedcovering of galvanized steel. Fittings are steel. Assembly is “fire-rated” and tested according to UL 94 with a V0 rating and ASTM84. Each hose has MPT connections. Standard fire-rated hoseshave a swivel connection at one end. Hoses are available in13mm or 19mm to match the FPT fittings on the unit.

One of the most important factors when operating a watersource heat pump is to maintain the proper water (GPM) flowrate to the unit. If water flow is not maintained the prematureopening of the refrigeration system safeties will stop unitoperation.

McQuay has the solution by offering hose assemblies withflow controllers installed at the factory. McQuay hose assemblykits are designed to allow for the proper GPM flow rate to eachindividual water heat pump. This is accomplished by the use ofa flow controller so that each pump obtains it's optimum operat-ing potential.

    1. The supply line is a 24-inch long stainless steel braided firerated hose with a swivel end and a male national pipe threadconnection on the other end. The opposite end of the hosehas a female national pipe thread and a ball valve with onepressure/temperature test port and a Y strainer.

    2. The return line consists of a 24-inch stainless steel braidedfire rated hose with swivel end and male national pipe threadconnection on the other end. The opposite end of the hosehas a female national pipe thread and a ball valve in con-junction with a flow controller with two pressure/temperaturetest points.

Note: dirty water systems are the main cause of safety lockouts ocurring to water source heat pumps. It may be necessaryto periodically clean and flush the Y strainer in an effort to keepthe loop system clean.

    Combination Balancing and Shutoff(ball) Valve

Constructed of brass and rated at 2750 kPa maximumworking pressure. Valves have a built-in adjustable memorystop to eliminate rebalancing. Valves have FPT connections onboth ends for connection to the water hose and to the fieldpiping.

Two-inch Filter RackAvailable as a field installed kit for unit sizes 007 through

060 and provides a 25mm deep collar for connection of returnair ductwork. The kit allows for a 51mm thick filter. The kit con-sists of four sheet metal brackets and fasteners. The bracketsreplace the ones shipped with the unit and can be fastened toallow for side or bottom filter removal.

Condensate HoseCondensate hose is available as a long, clear plastic hose

with the necessary clamps for connection to the field piping.
