  • Personal Property Security, by Officer Truscott, PSL An unfortunate part of our society is theft. While stealing is wrong in itself, prevention is the number one way to avoid going through this unfortunate circumstance. As we begin our school year, I would like to take time to remind parents to encourage and stress to their students the importance of locking up valuables while at school. We often see cell phones, IPODs, and other valuables left unattended around the school. Particularly in the gym locker rooms items are left in bags and unsecured. Unsecured items create opportunities for those that are looking to take things that are not theirs. Please help prevent thefts by securing your per-sonal

items if they are not going to be directly in your pocket. Also please encourage students to not keep these items in their backpacks especially in the outer mesh pockets as they invite thieves to take them when out in plain view. I also ask that you take the time to write down the Make, Model and Serial Number of all valuables, especially electronic devices, which will be brought to school. Having these items plays a critical role in the Police Department’s ability to track down, locate and return these items to their rightful owners. Thank you for time, and remember prevention is the number one w ay to combat thefts. Aaron Truscott, Verona Police Department Police School Liaison Officer

Attendance Hints & Reminders If you receive a message at home from our SchoolReach phone system saying that your child had an unexplained absence during the day, please check on PowerSchool to see what class your child was marked absent. Your child will then need to contact this teacher if they feel this is an error. The Attendance Office cannot change absences without the permission of the teacher who originally marked the absence. Please call 845-4403 for grades 10-12 and 845-4503 for Freshmen, EA & GEDO to report absences or students arriving late to school.

Notes vs. Calls If you know ahead of time that your student needs to leave for an appointment it is preferred to PLEASE send a note with them. Calling the Attendance Office to have a pass delivered to the student takes extra time and resources to deliver the note. This also disrupts the class when delivering the pass or calling into the classroom if needed.

Just a reminder that any student wishing to try out for Model UN for next year must attend the

information meeting next Thursday, March 5, 7:30 am in Mr. Knoll's room (F117)

  • Preseason Baseball Meeting Dates Players Meeting: Monday March 16th after school in D137 the Health Room. Any player interested in trying out for the Wildcat baseball program must attend. Career Days Is ComingCareer Days Is Coming For over 20 years, Verona Area High School has offered all juniors an exceptional educational opportunity to explore possible future careers. This year, all students taking English 11, English Literacy, AP Literature and AP Language courses will be participating in the Career Unit. Students start the year with several career exploration and research activities, and in December, chose a career that they would be interested in learning more about. The culminating experience of this unit is a one-on-one, 30 minute interview with a professional from their chosen career. It is a massive undertaking to match all 380+ students with someone from the work force, but we have always found a match for every student. This year, Career Days split into two events. English 11 and English Literacy April 21 – 22, 2015 AP Literature and AP Composition May 19 – 20, 2015 Please mark these dates on your calendar. We request that you do not schedule any appointments or plan any family activities that would conflict with these days. It is vital that every student is available for Career Days; we are not able to reschedule these interviews. Members of the community have graciously taken time out of their work day and volunteered to speak with students. Students will be informed of their scheduled day and time over the next two months. We are always looking for parent volunteers, and are still looking for professionals to speak to students in the following careers: Aerospace Engineer Graphic Design Art Therapy Hospital Administrator BioChemist International Business CEO Medical Technologist Chemical Engineer Orthopedic Surgeon Democratic Political Advisor Pathologist Diplomat/Foreign Service Officer Petroleum Engineer Electrician Radiologist/Technician Exploration Geologist Statistician Forensic Anthropologist Zoologist General Surgeon If you have experience or are comfortable speaking about one of these careers, please contact: Amy Moschkau Career Days Coordinator 608-845-4483 or [email protected]

  • Congratulations 2015 Badger VAHS Boys & Girls State Selection Candidates!!

    March 2015 VAHS Wildcats

What is Badger Boys State? Badger Boys State is an experience like none

other. It may be quickly described as a program which teaches the workings of government "by

doing"; but it is much more than that. It is a week long journey through a great many things that

make us who we are; leaders, friends, students, athletes, and most of all citizens of our respective cities, towns, and our great state. It is a journey which can be described as the most challenging and most rewarding (and fun) experiences by

those who have already participated in the program.

Selected to Represent VAHS: Evan Fernandez Joshua Hano

    Nicholas Hansen Alternates: Ian Birschback,

    Jonathan Grinde & Spencer Polk

What is Badger Girls State? Girls State is a very important part of the American Legion Auxiliary's Americanism

program. Designed to train future stateswomen in the science of government,

Wisconsin launched American Legion Auxiliary Badger Girls State in 1941 with 138 citizens

participating. The program has grown to over 740 citizens yearly and continues to be a major

project of the Department of Wisconsin's American Legion Auxiliary. This program does not discriminate against race, creed or color.

PURPOSE * to develop leadership and pride in American citizens * to educate citizens about our system of government * to instill a greater understanding of American traditions * to stimulate a desire to maintain our democratic government processes

Selected to Represent VAHS: Cheyenne Trilling

    Alternate: Grace Mueller

Badger Boys & Girls State Selection

Exploration Academy has selected Andrew Herbst and Taylor Jackson as representatives to the 2015 Badger Boys and Badger Girls State this June. They are being sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Verona and the Verona American Legion Auxiliary. Partici-pants are grouped into cities and counties which will form a “51st state.” For eight days, the citizens of this “new state” will carry out all the main functions of city, county, and state government using basic laws and fundamental procedures of the State of Wisconsin as their guide.

During the 2015-2016 school year, Verona Area High School will be moving to a block schedule and A+ access time, which will allow for many additional learning opportunities for our students. Most classes will be 93 minutes in length and there will also be a 30-minute period (A+ period) each day for students to get academic support, participate in clubs and other enrichment opportunities, or have a built in study hall! Each Monday, students will meet with their advisor to help with grade checks, answer questions students might have and help them plan their activities for the week. The purpose of this time will be flexible throughout the year, and provide many opportunities that we otherwise could not do during our traditional school day and periods. Over the last couple of years, staff has looked at ways to better assist students in their academic growth. In 2014, staff overwhelmingly decided to move to a block schedule and to create an advisory period. Next year we are excited to implement the new schedule. In an effort to make certain we are fully prepared for this next year, we will be running a pilot of the new schedule during the week of March 16. We want to ensure that staff and students are comfortable with the new schedule before we fully implement it in the fall of 2015-16. We are excited to share more information with you and answer any questions you might have. Dates, times and locations can be found in the box to the right. More information can also be found on our website at http://vahs.verona.k12.wi.us/

  • teams from across the student body to partake in one big event and more than that, for the students to positively interact with families and kids around from the community. The Council is looking to expand outreach and promotion for the Carnival this year by hanging flyers across town, distributing handouts to elementary schools, and using media like television to spread the word. Last year, over 175 kids from the area showed up to the Carnival, and we hope to increase community participation this year. In addition to increasing our promotion of the event, we also look to bring food and concessions to the Carnival this year because the Carnival runs over the lunch hour. Furthermore, we are looking to involve the Verona Police and Fire Departments in the Carnival, possibly with the presence of a fire truck. The main goal of the Council this month is to organize and run the Children’s Carnival as smoothly as possible, and to make it a fun and exciting event for both the students involved as well as the children and families coming to take part.

    Student Council The Children’s Carnival

    March Edition

March is the month of the Children’s Carnival, which is one of Student Council’s biggest events of the year. On March 28 from 11A.M. to 2P.M., Student Council will be hosting its fourth annual Children’s Carnival in the Main Gym, in which various clubs, extracurriculars, and sports teams will have booths at, where booth activities range from playing sports with the respective teams and other classic carnival games. As the host, the Council is working to organize, promote, and oversee the carnival as a whole, but the execution is also attributed to the numerous other groups that come to participate and organize a booth. It is the collective effort of students from around the school, beyond only Student Council, that contribute to the overall success of the Carnival, and Student Council would like to recognize that by putting the proceeds towards something that would benefit the school, like the Verona High School scholarship fund or something like water bottle dispensers on drinking fountains. As a whole, the Carnival is a fun way to get members from clubs and

Below are several links of information. CDC- http://www.cdc.gov/measles Wisconsin Fact Sheet- English- www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p4/p42174.pdf Wisconsin Fact Sheet- Spanish- www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p4/p42174s.pdf

Please review your child’s immunization status and contact your family health care provider, Madison- Dane County Public Health or a school nurse if you have questions or concerns.

If your child is not fully immunized and develops a rash with a fever, they should not attend school and you should call your health care provider. Please tell your provider you suspect your child may have measles. It is important to notify your medical office or hospital before taking your child in for diagnosis.

    Thank you

    Measles (Rubeola)

    Disease Fact Sheet Series

What is measles? Measles is a disease cause by measles virus and sometimes referred to as "hard", "red" or "10-day measles". Who can get measles? Measles virus can infect any person of any age who has not previously had the disease or measles vaccine. How is measles spread? Airborne droplets, from coughing or sneezing, spread the virus. It spreads easily and rapidly. How soon do symptoms appear after exposure? It takes from 8-12 days for the cold-like symptoms to appear and 14 days for the rash. What are the signs and symptoms of measles? The disease begins with cold like signs and symptoms including a cough, runny nose, high temperature and red watery eyes. By the second day after onset, a red blotchy rash appears at the hairline and spreads down the body to the arms and legs. The rash disappears in the same order of appearance (head to foot) in about 5-6 days. How can parents be sure that their child’s illness is measles? The only sure way to determine if an illness is indeed measles is through a blood test. When and for how long is a person able to spread measles? Measles can be spread from one day before the onset of cold-like symptoms, through the fourth day of the rash. What are the complications associated with measles? Among children with measles, about 10% develop ear infections, about 5% develop pneumonia, about 0.1% (1 per 1000 cases) develop encephalitis (inflammation of the brain that can result in deafness or mental retardation), and about 0.1% to 0.2% (1 to 2 per 1000 cases) die from it. Is there a treatment for measles? There is no specific treatment for measles. Can measles be prevented? Yes. Measles vaccine (usually given in combination with rubella and mumps vaccine, called measles-mumps-rubella or MMR vaccine) is recommended for all children at 12-15 months of age and again at 4-6 years of age. The 2-doses of vaccine normally provide life long immunity. Does a past infection with measles make a person immune for life? Yes
