The Resilience Project in Foundation Foundation students have been working on helping others and developing empathy. We have looked at recognizing how different people are feeling using their faces and body language as clues. Empathy helps us understand other people’s points of view and we are talking a lot about thoughtfulness, kindness and compassion for our family, friends and the people we meet. Ask your own children how they have helped somebody this week and share with them how you have helped someone too!

Resilient Kids Conference Top experts discuss various issues affecting children and teens – 1 day only! Speaking topics include:

Raising Happy & Resilient Kids

Understanding & Responding to Self-Harm

Growing Up Online

Growing Our Boys

Anxious Kids When: 7th September, 2019 (Saturday) 8:45am – 3pm Cost: Only $89 for the full day - Ticket price does not include food and beverages on the day Where: Crossway Centre, 2 Vision Drive, Burwood East, Melbourne VIC Bookings Essential: For more info please see flyer attached and visit: resilientkidsconference.com.au Kindness Boomerang Please watch the following short video with your family. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwAYpLVyeFU It shows the impact on a community when an act of kindness gets ‘paid forward’ or passed on from one person to another. Give Kindness Boomerang a try and pay kindness forward to your family and friends. You will make their day!

Vermont Primary School Curriculum LITERACY – EAL

eSmart – Is it Ok to Post?

Use this QR code or CLICK HERE to let us know you have read the article! Welcome back to Term 3 and I hope everyone was able to find some warmth over the holidays, be it by the heater or in the sun somewhere up north! My family and I, were very fortunate to have four weeks in northern Western Australia travelling the Gibb River Road. This is an old cattle route that runs between Derby (near Broome) and Kununurra (near the NT border). We travelled through some amazing countryside from gorges to deserts to beaches all under a deep blue sky. We were keen to share our experiences with family and friends and this meant thinking carefully about how we would do this in an eSmart manner. Sharing photos on social media has become such a normal part of life, that we too often do it without thinking – posting photographs of ourselves, our children and sometimes other people’s children. Every family has different points of view on posting photos – some are comfortable putting their children’s photographs online others are not. It is important that we respect these varying points of view. It is important not to assume that your beliefs in this area, are shared by everyone. We ask, that all parents, do not share photographs and/or videos of children at Vermont Primary School events without parental permission of all concerned. Our eSmart program teaches children that it is particularly unsafe to post photographs of themselves in school uniform. So what can you do if someone posts photographs of your child/ren without permission. This can require careful handling so as not to alienate or create conflicts with other parents. Commonsense Media suggest the following:

Without judgment, ask the person who posted it to delete it, or crop it so your kid isn't in the picture (easy to do with today's image-editing tools). Say, "I'm not ready for this yet."

Ask the poster not to tag the photo with names -- and definitely not location. That will limit exposure.

Ask the poster what his or her privacy settings are. If their profile is private and not public, only their friends can view their images which limits the audience for your child's photo.

If you're OK with a photo but only want certain people to see it, ask the poster to enable settings that limit who can see the photo to a small circle.

Ask the poster to instead use a private photo-sharing site such as Picasa or Flickr that requires a log-in.

If you meet with resistance, explain that you're worried about your kid's privacy. Once a photo is online, anyone can share it.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact or visit me if you would like further information on this or any other cyber safety issue. You can use the QR code or link at the top of the article to let me know you have read it. SSV State Cross Country Champion 2019 Last Thursday, Oscar W competed in the School Sport Victoria State Cross Country Championships at Bundoora Park, Bundoora. To qualify, Oscar won the Nunawading District and Whitehorse Division Cross Country events and finished 2nd in the Eastern Metropolitan Region Final. In the State Final, Oscar competed against the top 100 students in Victoria from both State and Independent schools. He ran a strategic race and produced a personal best time to become the 10 Year Boys 2km Victorian State Champion!

Oscar has now qualified for this year’s National Cross Country Championships which will be held in Wollongong in late August. As a School community we are extremely proud of Oscar’s achievements and wish him well in his future sporting endeavours. T Ball Last Thursday, the T Ball mixed team played in the division final. They played 3 matches. The first match they won 12 - 3. The second match they won 28-0. In the final match both teams had 2 wins and zero losses. Vermont Primary won the deciding match 20-0. This meant that they were undefeated and Division champions. In the last week of August they will play in the Regional Finals. Well done and congratulations to all the boys involved. Netball The Netball Mixed team won the District championship last term and last Friday went to the Division Finals. We played three games and unfortunately played against some very skilled teams and lost. Everyone tried their best and the school is very proud of their achievement. Level 2 Literacy News Students at Vermont Primary School learn about a wide range of different Writing genres as part of their literacy development. In Level 2, the students have begun Term 3 by investigating the different features of persuasive writing. Importantly, students have been learning to distinguish the difference between fact and opinion by looking at different statements and determining whether they can be proven as fact or simply expressed as what somebody believes in. It has been great to see the students explain their reasoning and come up with their own examples of facts and opinions. Using this knowledge, the students will later begin to investigate how to complete pieces of writing that persuade the reader by offering plausible opinions with factual support.

ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE BOX HILL SALVATION ARMY

Zoey 3CQ performing her keyboard solo Emily 3RF Cello Solo

On Friday 19th July, our School Orchestra travelled to the Salvation Army in Box Hill for a performance. We also brought along

six Yr10 students from Vermont High School to play with us and had some of the teachers from our school join in as well – Mr

Hoskin (saxophone), Mrs Monypenny (Clarinet), Mr Fraser (Bass Guitar & Drums) and Mr Straughan (Conductor). Altogether

we had almost 40 members in our Orchestra. We played five songs as a group and had four students play solos. The songs we

played were Mickey Mouse March, Rainbow Connection, Thinking Out Loud, Counting Stars and Beethoven’s Ninth and the

solo performances were by Zoey 3CQ (Keyboard), Emily 3RF (Cello), Alice 3RF (Keyboard) and Liana 6JS (Flute).

The day was very enjoyable, and a great opportunity to perform in a new environment, on a proper stage.
