Positioned For The 90'sVenture Lighting International, Inc. believes the decade of the90's will be one of the most significant and exciting times forenergy efficient lighting. Our efforts over the past two years havebeen to position our c0mpany to take full advantage of theopportunities which we believe will be presented during thisdecade.

The 90's will represent some unique challenges to people in boththeir personal and professional lives. There will be renewedemphasis on environmental concerns, such as energy conserva-tion and pollution control. Metal halide technology offersexcellent opportunities for positive benefits to the environment. For example, in many applications, metal halide lamps can easilyreplace their incandescent counterparts and provide the sameillumination for about one-fourth the energy consumption.

Perhaps the most important development which has occurred for Venture Lighting during the past year is ouremergence as the world's largest employee owned lamp manufacturer. Venture Lighting will continue to focus onour original goal: being not only the largest, but the best metal halide lamp company in the world. Ourcommitment to that goal is evidenced by the continued growth of our company as seen in this catalog.I welcome this opportunity to thank all of you for your past support and your continued faith in Venture Lightingand its quality products, Your support has been the critical ingredient for our success. We are prepared to workvery hard to maintain your trust in us as we enter this new decade by offering our custonters tomorrow's highquality, ener$/ efficient, white light sources today. Together we can improve our environment and continue ourmutual growth.

WFTYMETAT HATIDE?Unquestionably, Venture's focus has been on thedevelopment of metal halide lamp technology. 0f the lightingtechnologies available today, why has Venture put almost allof its resources behind this one? The answer to this question

lies in the attributes of the metal halide lamp and the userfeatures this technology offers. There are seven primaryadvantages of metal halide: white light, high efficiency, compact size, long life, versatility, user comfort, and positiveenvironmental impact.

Standard metal halide lamps produce white light with acolor temperature of 4000' Kelvin and a Color Renderinglndex (Cru; from 65 to 70. This color rendition is superiorto the fluorescent cool white lamp, long the standard forcommercial indoor lighting. Metal halide lamps can also bedesigned to provide colors from 3000'Kelvin (incandescentlighD to 5000"* Kelvin (natural daylight) with CRI's up to90.

The small size of the metal halide arc tube allows for thedesign of very compact lamps. A 100 watt metal halide lampwith an ^rc g p of less than I inch produces the same lightoutput as an 84 inch long high output cool white fluorescentlamp. Smaller lamps mean smaller luminaires with bettercontrol, allowing the lighting designer to put light where it ismost needed.

Metal halide lamps produce light 3 to 5 times moreefficiently than incandescent lamps. They are the mostefficient white light source available. When you combine thisfeature with the other benefits of metal halide, it clearly isthe standard against which the other lighting technologiesshould be measured.

Most discharge lamps have the inherent advantage of longlife relative to their incandescent counterparts. Metal halideis no exception with lives ranging from 3,000 to 20,000hours. Long life rneans fewer replacement lamps and lessrelamping labor over the life of the installation. In order toprovide the same lumen hours over the life of oneMH100/U, you would need 45-100 watt incatrdescent lightbulbs.

Metal halide lamps provide the user with an efficient whitelight source which most people prefer over the yellow of highpressure sodium or the blue-green of clear mercury,Because the source is efficient, it produces substantially lessheat than incandescent lamps for a given light level. Thereduction in heat from the lighting reduces the amount ofenergy required to cool the lighted space.

Metal halide lamps can be usecl indoors or outdoors equallywell. \pical temperature extrenres have no inrpact onperfornrance. Metal halidc lanrps are also available in a wiclerange of wattages (5tl t0 1650 watts) and lumen packages(3ttOO to 180,000 lut'netts), making tltcm useful over tltewidest possible range of applications.

A metal halide lighting system is able to deliver a given lightlevel in a space for considerably less energy than thatrequired by an incandescent systenr. Less energT requiredfor lighting means less gencration of electricity. This in turnmeans less consumptiott of our dwindling supplies of fossilfl, rels and less smokestack ernissiotrs from our power plants.Nl in all, use of rnetal halidc larnps instead of irrcandescentwill help us to improve our envircnment.

Univers al MetalHa\ide Lamps(Mogul Base)The workhorses of metalhalide technology are theuniversal operating lamps.Available over the range of 70to 1000 watts, these lampscan be operated in anyposition. This versatilityallows them to be used in themany lighting jobs where thefixture orientation needs tobe flexible, such as sportsand building floodlighting.Where an application calls forall the lamps in the sameoperating orientation, the useof position oriented lampdesigns is preferable.

The newest members of theuniversal mogul base familyare the low wattage versions, available in 70, 100 and 150watt sizes. They haveexceptionally cool outer bulboperating temperaturescompared to their ED17medium base counterparts. This particular characteristicmakes them well suited foruse in hazardous locationfixtures.

Universal operating design allows the lamp to perform inany orientation.Full range of wattages available from 70 to 1000 watts.Standard metal halide color of 4000 K and very good CRIof 55.Available in both clear and coated designs.Low wattage designs have cooler bulb wall temperaturescompared to their medium base counterparts.

Vertical HighOutput MetalHalideVertical high output metalhalide lamps provide morelight for the same powerconsumption as theiruniversal operating counter-parts. This performanceadvantage, however, is pro-vided in a limited number ofpositions; base up or basedown within 15 degrees ofvertical. This product line has beendramatically improved by thedevelopment of a newenvironmental regulator(Figure 1). This regulatorremoves gases from the insideof the bulb which can cause

r Increased lumen output for the same ener$/ consumption.r Uses same ballast as the universal lamps.I Improved lumen maintenance and color stability with thenew environmental regulator.

Horizontal HighOutput MetalHalide LampsHorizontal high output metalhalide lamps are positionoriented designs, whichprovide more light for thesame power consumption andmore life than their universalcounterparts operating in thehori zontal orientation.Universal lamps have both alife and light output deratingfor off-vertical operation. Likethe vertical high output lamps, these also contain the newenvironmental regulator forimproved performance. The horizontal high outputlamps provide up to 25%more light and 33% longer lifethan a comparable universal

lamp operated in a horizontalorientation. Horizontal lampsare unique in that theyrequire a Position OrientedMogul Base (POMB) on thelamp, and a position orientedmogul socket in the fixture. This combination orients thehorizontal lamp in thecorrect position for optimumperformance.Horizontal high output lampsare used extensively in gasstation canopies, outdoorbillboards, architecturalsitelights, car lots, sportslighting, and lighting forretailing and commercialoffice interiors.

Higher light output and longer life than universal lampsoperated horizontally,New environmental regulator for increased lumen main-tenance and color stability.Asymmetric arc tube design allows for an increasedoperating range of * 45" from horizontal.Sign and sports lighting lamps specifically designed tooperate over a range of postions.

Mogul Base LowWattage MetalHalide LampsThe adciition of the mogulbase low wattage lamps in anED28 outer bulb providessome interesting possibilitiesfor lighting applications. Itallows a standard mogul basefixture to be offered in alower light output packagewith no change of the socket.Adaptation of existing fixturesis often easily accomplished, since the lower wattageballasts are smaller thanthose used by the higherwattage lamps.

The very cool bulb walltemperature allows theselamps to be designed intohazardous location fixtureswhere bulb wall temperatureis a significant factor in thedetermination of the fixtureclassification. CAUTION: Onlyfixtures can be rated forhazardous location applica-tions, not lamps. Please referto fixture manufacturersliterature for specific recom-mendations and ratings onfixtures which utilize theselamps.

Mogul base and larger bulb allow for easy adaptation of lowwattage lamps into higher wattage mogul base fixtures.Cool bulb wall is ideally suited for use in many hazardouslocation fixtures.

Open FixtureMetal H alideLampsThis catalog marks theintroduction of the mostsignificant development todate in low wattage metalhalide technology - theopen fixture compatiblelamp. Through a uniquedesign concept, VentureLighting has developed alamp which is designed to beused in a completely openfixture. The heart of the open fixturelamp concept is the lightcapsule, containing an arctube and an outer shroud

which provides an internalsafety shield in the event ofarc tube shattering. In thisunlikely event, the outershroud is designed to preventthe hot quartz particles fromthe arc tube from breakingthe lamp's outer bulb. Thisconcept can be applied to awide variety of outer bulbconfigurations. The initialproducts which incorporatethis concept will find wideapplication in indoor com-mercial lighting for bothoffices and r etail spaces.

Reflector MetalHalide LampsReflector metal halide lampsprovide optical control builtright into the lamp, eliminating the need for anexternal reflector in thefixture. An added benefit ofthe reflector lamp design isthat the hermetically sealedbulb protects the reflectorsurface from the lightreducing impact of dirt andcorrosion. They are availablein spot and flood beampatterns in 70, 100, and 175watt designs. The mostwidely used color is thestandard 4000 K white light,

however, lamps can besupplied in warm or daylightcolor (special order). These lamps ^re beingincreasingly specified inlandscape lighting. Alsoavailable by special order areprimary color lamps of red, green and blue. Theseproducts were designed forthose special applicationswhere a color enhances adisplay or ueates a uniqueand visually attractiveenvironment.

Built in optical control; no fixture reflector required.0perate on standard ballasts. Many color options available (special order).Sealed reflector surface inside bulb remains cleanthroughout life.

White-Lux@Metal H alideLampsWhite-Lux@ is the cost effec-tive solution for replacinghigh pressure sodiumlighting with the clean, whitelight of metal halide. Theselamps are designed to retrofitdirectly into a high pressuresodium 250 or 400 wattfixture with no change ofballast--just screw in theWhite-Lux@ lamp. Someapplications may requireenclosed fixtures (page 47).This radical new designeliminates the need forballast and ignitor changes orrepositioning of the socket. Many facilities today arefinding the low color rendi-

tion of high pressure sodiumunacceptable for theirlighting requirements.Higher productivity andimproved employee moraleare often cited as benefits ofthe conversion to white lightillumination. The high costassociated to change thefixtures or modify the currentfixtures to operate metalhalide is a barrier. With theWhite-luxo lamp, conversionfrom yellow to white light inwarehouses, factories, park-ing lots or any other locationis accomplished cost effec-tively by changing only thelamp.

Change from high pressure sodium to metal halide lightingby changing only the lamps--no change in ballasts, ignitorsor sockets.Complete electrical compatibility with the 250 or 400 watthigh pressure sodium ballast.Rated for open fixture use (400 watt only) if the lamp isoperated vertically + 15 degrees.

Reduced0uter JacketMetalHalide LampsMetal halide larnps above 175watts, with their inherentlyhigher efficiencies, wereoriginally designed as re-placements for mercurylamps. In order to make thetransition from mercury tometal halide fixtures aspainless as possible, the samesize outer jackets were usedon metal halide lamps aswere used on their mercurycounterpart. Venture hasdetermined that many of themetal halide lamps can bedesigned into smaller outerbulbs, which allows for thedesign of more compactfixtures. Often, these morecompact flxtures are selectedfor lighting installations, primarily due to aestheticconsiderations, such as alower flrture profile.

    "r:i,t )i.,/i!,it

These lamps also provide thepotential for better opticalcontrol than the full sizedlamps, since the arc tube isable to be situated closer tothe reflector in the fixture. There are applications where asmaller fixture will provide amore cost effective systern, Inpole mounted fixtures theeffective projected area (EPA)of the fixtures in partdetermines both the polegauge and footer character-istics within a given geo-graphic ^rea,. The higher theEPA of the fixture (s), the morepotential for cost will be in thepole and its installation. Thesespecial lamps from Venturemay allow for the utilization ofsmaller size (lower EPA)fixtures.

Smaller outer bulb allows for a more compact fixturedesign.Reduced system cost possibilities for pole mountedfixtures.Improved fixture optical control possible.Lower profile fixture designs.

Instant RestartMetal HalideLampsStandard metal halide lampsrequire from 5 to 15 minutesto restart after power inter-ruptions. However, theseinstant restart lamps fromVenture are capable ofrelighting instantaneouslywith the use of a speciallydesigned ignitor. Power inter-ruptions of l5 seconds or lesswill allow full restoration oflight as soon as power isapplied to the lamp. Inter-ruptions longer than this willproduce less than full lightoutput upon re-ignition. Theamount of light produced willdepend on the time the lamPhas had to cool down.

Nlows for instant restoration of lightinterruption occurs.Does not require the presence of anpower supply.Designs are universal operation.

Due to the high voltagesassociated with this system, the fixture is required to beenclosed and the door safetyinterlocked. These pre-cautions are necessary tosafeguard the user from thedanger of electrical shock.Applications for this productinclude sports arenas (bothindoor and outdoor), prisons, military installations, facto-ries and any other locationwhere loss of light will causepotential issues of eithersafety or security.

Gl are GuardrMMetal HalideLampsGlare Guard" metal halidelamps are easily identified bythe highly reflective alum-inized coating on the top ofthe bulb. Since this coating isboth opaque and reflective, iteffectively reduces glare whileredirecting the spill light backinto the reflector, The resultis reduced glare and a moreuniform lighting pattern onthe illuminated ^rea.

Glare Guard'''* lamps havebeen used in both indoor andoutdoor sports lighting, out-door architectural lightingand indoor downlighting formalls, gymnasiums and com-mercial spaces. The controlof spill light is particularlyadvantageous where thelighting designer is attempt-ing to keep light trespass to aminimum.

Glare reduction from fixture.Reduction of spill light -- light trespass control.More uniform illumination. No special ballast or fixture required.

Par Metal HalideLampsThe PAR38 metal halidelarnps are designed for openfixture operation. Available in7 0 watt flood and spotdesigns, these lamps providean alternative to the higherwattage incandescent PARlamps. The sealed PAR bulbprovides protection for theinternal aluminized reflectorsurface over the life of thelamp. This means less impacton light output fromenvironmental factors suchas dirt and other airbornecontaminants.

Where more light is neededover a longer distance, thePAR56 and Pfn64 ntetalhalide larnps provide forexcellent optical control in anarrow spot design. Widerbeam patterns can beobtained through the use ofstandard spread lenses.Anticipated applications forthe PAR lamps includelighting for flags, atriums, building columns and otherlocations where drantaticarchitectural lighting effectsare desired,

Narrow spot, highly directional light source.Operate on standard ballasts.Ideal for long throw lighting applications.Sealed reflector surface inside bulb remains cleanthroughout life.

Double EndedMetalHalide LampsThe double ended metalhalide lamps in 70 and 150watt designs have becomepopular in Europe for lightingof displays in retail appli-cations. With three colortemperatures to choosefrom(IOOO K, 3500 K, and4000 K), the designer canselect the color to obtain thedesired look for the display. The compact design of theselamps allows them to be usedin small flxtures. The lampsdo, however, emit ultravioletradiation; requiring them tobe used in enclosed fixtureswith a cover glass forabsorption of this potentiallyharmful radiation.

Venture has developed 'tnumber of higher wattagedouble ended lamps. Theprimary advantage of thesesources is their extremelycompact size relative to thenlore standard bulb configur-ations. These larger wattagesare finding use in sports andfl oodl ighting appl ications.

I Very small lamp and fixture combination.r Good optical control possible.I Ballasts widely available.

They arepopular for general lightingapplications where it hasbeen determined that colorrendition is not important.Parking lots, street lightingand security lighting com-prise the major applicationsfor high pressure sodium. These lamps are also used forbuilding fl oodlighting wherethe materials in the facadeare best presented by the verywarm appearance of highpressure sodiunt illumi-nation"High pressure sodiumtechnology has shown itself

over the years to be anexcellent outdoor lightingsource with long life, goodlumen maintenance andhigh system reliability.Medium based low wattageand mogul based h ighwattage larnps are in wideuse. The twin arc tube lamps weredesigned to provide a fasterreignition system in case ofpower interruptions. Thesecond arc tube is preheatedby the operating one, and itpreferentially ignites aftershort duratiorr (less than 10seconds) power interrup-tions, providing about 10-15% of the full light outputupon ignition.

Venture HID lamps have corrosion-resistant brass or nickelplated brass bases. Some metal halide lamps are equippedwith a Position Oriented Mogul Base (POMB) and should onlybe used in proper sockets. Descriptions, abbreviations anddrawings of bases are shown on page 45.The mogul base has numbers and letters impressed on itssurface which represent months and years. This allows theuser to record the date of installation by marking the letterwhich coincides with the month and the number whichcoincides with the last digit in the current year.

Descriptions, abbreviations and drawings of bulbs are shownon page 45.The outer bulbs of Venture HID lamps are madeof glass which is designed to have strength and thermal shockresistance suitable for operation in typical fixtures; however, all HID lamps must be shielded from direct contact withwater or other liquids which could result in lamp breakage.CTEAR FINISH lamps are recommended to provide maximumlight and favorable color in applications where optical controlis required.COATED FINISH metal halide lamps have phosphor coatedbulbs to provide a warmer appe r^nce in applications wheresofter shadows and subtle highlights are preferred. Also included in some lamp ordering codes are letter andnumber codes which designate the bulb shape and bulbdiameter (see page 45). In general, items which areconsidered standard and well recognized are not included inthe order code; therefore, an MH 4001U does not include abulb shape designator of /8D37, or a /MOG for the mogulbase in the order code, as this is the standard construction. However, the smaller bulb version of this same lamp willinclude a bulb size in the order code: MH 400/U lED28.

The lamp ordering code is a unique code which provides ashorthand description of the lamp, and can be used alone orin combination with the product number when placingorders. Abbreviations used in these codes are:

Under this section of the catalog, the standard case quantityreferences the full case quantity for each lamp type. Anyorder for a number of lamps less than the standard casequantity is subject to broken case pricing.

This is a unique code assigned to each lamp by the AmericanNational $tandards lnstitute (ANSD which describes both theelectrical and physical characteristics of the product.

The notes column is used to specify additional informationpertaining to a lamp. Footnote references are contained inthis column.

Average life is a value of lamp life expectancy based onlaboratory tests of representative lamps at rated voltage for 10hours per start, unless otherwise indicated. The average lifevalues are the total operating hours at which the median$0U,1 of any large group of lamps, initially installed undernormal conditions at rated voltage, will still be burning.Lamp operating conditions can also affect lamp life. Atburning cycles shorter than 10 hours per start, the medianlife will be shortened. At 5 hours per start, the approximatelamp life is 75% of the rated life. At 2Il2 hours per start, theapproximate lamp life is 50% of the rated life. At I U4 hoursper start, the approximate lamp life is 40% of the rated life. The bulb and base temperatures of all high intensitydischarge lamps must be maintained within certain limits orshort life may result. Product specification bulletins areavailable that specify these limits.

Ratings are averages based on photom etry at rated lamp wattsafter 100 hours of operation. Zero hour lumens are notaccurate indicators of performance and may be as much as20% higher (metal halide) or 7% lower (high pressuresodium) than ratings. When universal burning metal halidelamps^re

operated in off-vertical burning positions, initiallumens will be lower than the rated values. Performanceratings for universal lamps are determined in verticaloperation.

Ratings are averages based on photometry at rated lampwatts-at 40o/o of average life for lamps operated on typicalcommercial ballasts at 10 burning hours per start (except asnoted). Lumen values of universal and vertical lamps aremeasured in the vertical burning position, while horizontallamps are measured in the horizontal burning position.

0n commercial metal halide ballasts, lamp wattage tends torise slightly throughout lamp life; therefore, actual meanlumens of lamps in service on typical commercial ballastsare higher than rated mean lumens. When universal lampsare operated in off-vertical burning positions, mean lumenswill be lower than the rated vertical operation values and lifewill be shortened.

    46/52

Ratings are averages based on photometry at rated lampwatts, at 50% of rated life, for lamps operated 10 or morehours per start on typical commercial ballasts.0n most commercial ballasts, lamp wattage will slowlyincrease until a peak is reached some time during lamp life, then the lamp wattage will slowly decrease. During rated life0n commercial ballasts, mean lamp lumens and lampwattage will average close to their ratedvalues.

Reflector lamps beam candlepower ratings are averages ofthe center beam intensity of reflector lamps output whenoperated at ratedwatts.

Beam spread is the angle of the beam in degrees measuredto 50% of the center beam intensity.

The correlated color temperature of a light source, expressedin degrees Kelvin (K), describes the chromaticity or apparentwhiteness of the lamp which contributes to the visualappeaLr^nce of the lighted space. Color temperatures (whereshown) are appr oximate.Nl metal halide lamps normally exhibit some lamp-to-lampcolor variation and gradually change in color throughout life. This change during life is toward a warmer appearance andslightly lower color temperature. Near the end of rated life, color temperature may increase and shift toward blue. Metalhalide lamps can operate well beyond rated life; however, thelight output will be low and the color of the lamp will changesignificantly.Burning position, ballast regulation characteristics andnormal variations in supply voltage will affect lamp color andlight output.High pressure sodium lamp color temperature is alsoaffected by ballasts, lamp design and life; however, because ofthe saturated yellow spectrum, it is usually less noticeable. The Color Rendering !ndex (CRI) is a mathematicallydeveloped rating based on the spectral distribution incomparison to a standard source, It is an indication of alamp's ability to show all colors of the visual spectrum. Thischaracteristic is not listed in the data tables.

All mercury and high pressure sodiunt lamps shown in thiscatalog are able to be operated in any position; however, theoperation of rnetal halide lamps in burning positions otherthan those specified can result in severe reductions inperformance and potentially nonpassive failures. Certainburning positions require suitably enclosed fixtures for safetyreasons. Descriptions and drawings of burning positions, along with a discussion of proper fixture enclosure practicesfor rnetal halide lanrps, are shown orr page 47.

The codes in the fixture requirenrent coluntn indicatewhether the lamp nrust only be operated in an errclosedfixture or in an open fixture witltin the specified burnirrgposition limitations. It is essential that you read the safetyinformation 0n burning positions and fixture requirentents0n page 47. Lantps must be supported in fixtures by thebases only. Early performance degradation can result frommetal parts of the fixture contacting the glass bulb of thelamp.

The maximum overall length of single ended lampsmaximum distance in inches from the top of the bulbbottom of the base. For double ended lantps, itmaximum end-to-end length,

The light center length for high intensity discharge larnps isthe distance in inches from the center of the arc to a specifiedreference point on the larnp base, usually the bottom.

Bulb designations consist of letters to indicate the bulb shape, followed by numbers which irrdicate the bulb diameter in l/tiinch increments, Bulbs are measured at their largestdiameter. F'or example, an ED28 bulb is an elliptical dimpledslrape, 3Il2 inches in diameter. All single ended Pro-Arc'E and Super Pro-Arc'*' lamps havebrass or nickel plated brass bases.

IMPORTANT APPLICATIOI.{, CAUTION ND SAFETYII{FORMATIOI{ FOR HIGH INTEI{SITY DISCHARGE LAMPSRatings are based o n lamp testing, under con-trolled conditions, 0n A.C. circuits with equipment whichmeets Venture standards. The performance of these lamps, under typical service conditions, may vary somewhat fromrated values. Nl lamp specifications and ratings are subiectto change without notice.

METAL HATIDE - These lamps sometimes fail in a non-passive manner. This occurs primarily when lamps arebperated in off-vertical burning positions; therefore, thefixture requirement specifications should be carefullyadhered to when enclosed fixtures are specified. (see page47).

SPECIAT CAUTIONS FOR DISCHARGE LAMPSHigh intensity discharge lamps must only be used in aux-iliary equipment whicli meetr the electrical specifications ofNSi. Total load can be determined by adding auxiliary wattsto lamp watts. Venture tighting International will not beresponiible for unsatisfactory performance, property damage0r personal injury resulting from lamp operation inunauthorized auxiliary equipment .Wear safety glasses and gloves when installing or removingthese lamps.-Direct contact with water, scratches to the outerenvelope or undue pressure can cause these lamps to break. If the outer envelope should break, immediately turn off thepower. Do not remove the lamp until it has cooled. Avoidiontact with the arc tube support to prevent electrical shock.Replacement lamps should be screwed firmly, but notforcibly, into the socket to avoid loosening due to vibration. Acomplete statement of precautions and operationinstructions is furnished with each lamp.If the outer jacket of a metal halide or mercury lamp isbroken, it is important to turn off power to the lamp toprevent injury wliich could be caused by ultraviolet radiationa eXOOSUfe.

$$E{;$$ {r${E::};IIj}{t: lr{}t r${r&t - End-of-life usually occurswhen the lamp reignition voltage exceeds the voltageavailable from the ballast. The lamp typically starts, warmsup, turns off and then restarts. This on/off cycling is themost common mode of failure of high pressure sodiumlamps.MERCURY - The end-of-life of these lamps is a passivedimming process. These lamps have extremely long lives andreach end-of-life by an eroding of the electrodes in the arctube, causing heany tungsten deposits (blackening) on thearc tube. Thls ultimately reduces light output to very lowlevels.High lntensity Discharge (UtO)lamps require auxiliarybailast equipment designed to produce proper electrical

values. Nl pro-Arc' metal halide lamps will start at ambienttemperatures of -30oC (-22"F) when used on approvedballasts, Pro-Arc@ High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps startat -60oC on approved ballasts.Full light output does not occur immediately when power isapplied to cold HID lamps. For metal halide and HPS, thereis a time delay of 2 to 4 minutes before the lamps reachg0%of their full light output. For mercury lamps, the delay is 5 to7 minutes.

When there is a power interruption of l/2 cycle or more'HID lamps will extinguish and will not immediately restartwhen power is applied. Several minutes are required beforean arc can be re-established by a normal ballast and starter. The exact time for restarting is dependent upon the ballastand starter, the lamp wattage, the flrture and any variation insupply voltage. Once the lamp restarts, several minutes willbe^ie{uired to reach full light output. The time required toestablish full light output can be as short as 5 minutes or aslong as 15-20 minutes. For those applications where loss of light is either a safety orsecurity issue, there are options available in metal halide andHPS lamps. Pro-Arc@ instant restart metal halide lamps canrestore Tull light output immediately in the case ofmomentary power interruptions. (see pages 25 & 27).Standby high pressure sodium lamps will provide 10-15% oftotal light output after amomentary power interruption. (seepages 36 &37).

High pressure sodium lamps are vacuum jacketed and mayif broken. Suitable caution, such as eye protectionand gloves, should be used during installation and removal. For more detailed application and other technicalinformation, contact Venture Lighting International'sMarketing Department.

The operation of metal halide lamps in burning positionsother than those specified can result in severe reductions inperformance and potential nonpassive failure. Lamp life, light output and color can be affected by the burningposition. Certain burning positions require suitably enclosedfixtures for safefy reasons. Please refer to the Fixture Requirement column in the LampSpecifications section. The codes describe the fixturesrequired:E Must only be used in suitably enclosed fixtures.S Universal burning position lamp can be operated inopen fixture when the burning position is vertical

base up or vertical base down -r l5o; otherwise,an enclosed tixture is required.

0 Can be operated in open fixture within the specifiedburning position limits; otherwise, an enclosedfixture is required.SAFETY

All metal halide lamps have quartz arc tubes that operate atextremely high temperatures and may shatter unexpectedlyas a result of misapplication, system failure or internalfactors. This violent failure could cause extremely hot glassand lamp parts to discharge into the surroundingenvironment, creating L risk of personal injury, fire orproperty damage.

It is incumbent on the user to use common sense and goodjudgment in anticipation of these potential violent failures. Ifthe environment near the lamp is susceptible tocontamination from flying glass, or materials used in theenvironment are flammable, 0r personnel would be exposedto infury by flying glass, then enclosed fixtures should beused even if the lamp type does not require enclosure.

enclosed fixtures and the suitability of the lens/diffusermaterial to be used. Fixture manufacturers can help withthese decisions.

REDUCTION OF RISKThe potential of violent failure can be significantly reducedby relamping at or before the rated end-of-life. Inapplications where the lamps burn continuously, the lampsshould be turned off for a period of 15 minutes at least onceper week, which will cause lamps nearing their end-ollife tofail passively upon relighting. Careful adherence to the aboveprecautions may not eliminate all possible risk associatedwith the risk of using metal halide lamps, but it will reducethe likelihood of personal injury 0r property damage.

Pollution ReductionThe average power plant in the U.S. consumes about 1pound of coal or .075 gallons of oil to produce onekilowatt hour of electricity. Based on the current fuel mlxused to generate electricity, a 10% reduction in totalelectrical usage would save about 75 million tons of coaland almost 27 million barrels of oil. This reduction infossil fuel usage would also reduce pollution to theatmosphere by approximately 197 million tons of carbondioxide, 1.7 million tons of sulfur dioxide and 692thousand tons of nitrogen oxides.

Shown in the many pages of this catalog are the wide arrayof metal halide lamps available from Venture Lighting. Metalhalide lamps are often the lighting technology of choice fortoday's environmentally conscious world. In addition tobeing a compact, versatile white light source, these lampsalso offer excellent benefits to the environment. It is estimatedthat the U.S. energy bill for lighting alone is$32 Uittion. About 72% of this is used by commercial, institutional and industrial consumers. Since lightingconsumes almost 25% of their total energy usage, efficientlighting can play a substantial role in any energy savingsplan directed at these end users.Throughout the United States, it is estimated that l0% ofour total electrical energy bill could be saved through theutilization of efficient lighting. This would result in anenergy savings of about 278 billion KWH per year.

Reduced Electrical Demand Reduction of Solid WastePower generatin g facil-ities cost about $t.OO forevery watt of capacity. Thel0% electricity reductionin demand cited earlierwould translate into notbuilding power plantswith a generating capacityof 278 billion kilowatthours.

0f course, the energysavings are not confinedjust to the energy savedby the lighting. Notbuilding the power plantssaves the enerry which would have been expended to buildthe materials needed for the plants. Annual maintenancecosts for the power plants are also saved. The reduced heatoutput of the more efficient lamps also reduces the powerneeded for air conditioning by another 5% in a typicalcommercial application.

0n page 3 of this catalog, it was shown that 45 - 100 wattincandescent light bulbs are needed in order to generate thesame lumen hours of one 100 watt metal halide lamp. These 45 incandescent bulbs will create almost 20 timesmore solid waste than the metal halide lamp.Even fluorescent lamps, which have close to the sameefficiency as the metal halide lamps, will create about 10times more solid waste for the same number of lumenhours. As landfill sites become even more scarce, solidwaste issues such as this will be important.

Ercellent User ValueNot only do we have the opportunity to save enerry, reduceair pollution and save 0n solid waste generation, but we cando so while improving the quality of our lives through betterlighting. As we age, we require much more light to performa given task than we did when we were young. Metal halidewill provide all of the environmental benefits discussedabove while allowing us to maintain or even improve ourlighting. Metal halide - the lighting technology of tomorrow- today.
