We’ve all seen Jimmy Fallon and his friends rock the microphone, right? Will Ferrell’s hilariously amazing rendition of Beyoncé’s “Drunk in Love,” anyone? Yes, I did just YouTube that…again. But now it’s time for your 15 minutes of fame!

Here’s how it works: Competitors will be bracketed into a single elimination tournament and compete against each other in a three-song lip sync challenge. Four competitors will face off each week and the two winners will each receive a $25 FSS Gift Card and automatically advance to the Grand Finale. The winner of the Grand Finale will receive a $300 cash prize!

Have you thought about hosting a party but the entire process was too overwhelming? Or maybe it slipped your mind between work, school, and the busy schedules of your family members?

The majority of us on Kadena are a world away from home and sometimes the important events in our lives get overlooked. Although it may seem that without immediate family around there is less need to focus on life’s big events, this doesn’t have to be the case. The wonderful thing about the military community is that no matter where you go your friends become family. So this year, focus on making each event – big or small – memorable.

Planning a party can be stressful but don’t let it get the best of you. Whether you’re planning a birthday, baby shower, squadron party or a small get together with friends, you can save time by utilizing our facilities for hosting your perfect party. Our very own Kadena Force Suport Squadron has so many options for making a special day come together seamlessly, and here’s how:

Emery Lanes • 966-7303Ready to transform your party into a VIP event? Book our Taiko Room! You’ll have full access to our private room with two lanes, a personal server (weekends only), unlimited bowling, shoe rental and karaoke! Choose from Brooklyn’s Izakaya or Strikers Café for food packages.

Schilling Community Center • 634-1387We offer a wide variety of party packages and rooms for any event. All packages include a personal party assistant, party themes, customizable scheduling and guest count.

Banyan Tree Club • 966-7372We can provide a large assortment of freshly baked goods for any special occasion. What’s the most exciting part? Our unique Kopy Kakes, of course! Bring in your photo on a disc and we’ll put the image on your cake!

As an ocean-loving person I’m open to almost any water activity. However, I’ve never made a point to go kayaking. After my recent adventure, though, I am remiss for not having spent more time sea kayaking and am thrilled about this newfound hobby. The sea kayaking and snorkeling adventure to Sesoko Island with Kadena Outdoor Recreation is one of the most exciting excursions available to us on Okinawa!

Our journey began on a beach in Onna. The early morning haze clung to the bottom of a bright blue sky, promising perfect weather. We were separated into pairs, given a paddle, kayak and a short lesson on paddling techniques before beginning our adventure. With the ocean before us, cliffs hanging beside us and the crystal water below, we followed our guide as he effortlessly led us toward a cave carved into the rocks ahead. As we paddled out further and the water became deeper, the breathtaking views combined with my beating heart quickly transformed nerves into excitement. A calm washed over me as our kayaks cut through the small waves of the East China Sea, my breath harmonizing with my paddling.

Before too long, we came upon an alcove. We put on our snorkel gear after wading through the shallow water to shore. Once back in the water, the coral reef opened up below us to a menagerie of tropical fish swimming about. We made our way to the large cave and as the coral dropped away, the water darkened. Our guide led us toward the back of the cave where he showed us crevices

Page 35: Venture - July 2015

VENTURE 35

RECREATION

filled with hundreds of fish. We turned around to see the sun illuminating the underwater world, the bright teal water affirming the cave’s namesake, Blue Cave. Our guide directed us out of the cave and we were given some time to snorkel the surrounding reef.

The ocean began to change, the tide pulling and the waves building. We made our way back to the kayaks and set out on our return journey to the beach. The current was a bit stronger making the paddle back even more exhilarating. As we went along, we were given a little bit of information that helped us become more intimate with the ocean; depth is determined by the color of the water, the darker the color the deeper the water. As we approached shore, our paddling eased, the water calmed and the wind died down to a faint breeze. About three and a half hours after leaving shore we were back where we started. I could feel the afternoon’s adventure in all of my muscles, though during the trip I was too captivated and the scenery was too beautiful to notice.

I’m already looking forward to my next sea kayaking trip to Sesoko Island. It’s a totally new and different way to explore Okinawa, offering a unique perspective of the ocean.
