General Tasks and garden maintenanceWater thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose (a length of old hose punctured with little holes) left running for an hour or so.Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this must be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help.Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water for lime-hating plants such as camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas - they will not thank you for it!The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface.Hoe beds and borders to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed. If it’s dry, attack perennial weeds like ground elder and the like with systemic weed killer painted onto the leaves and trail tips of bindweed into jam jars full of the same. Remember systemic weed killers are indiscriminate and will kill anything they contact. If you don’t have time to do this, at least cut the culprits down to prevent them from setting seed.Keep your pond topped up with fresh water - a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic, if not fatal, for animals.

PestsPests love warm weather, so be on your guard! Caterpillar and aphid infestations can be dealt with by hand if caught early enough, but should the situation career out of control you will have to resort to insecticides or grin and bear it! Greenfly and blackfly especially love the heat and don’t forget aphids and other sap-sucking insects can transmit viruses so don’t give in to the sympathy vote. Try to attract beneficial insects by growing a wide variety of plants - ladybirds and their larvae are consummate aphid predators, as are lacewings and even wasps.

BirdsAs summer wears on and the ground hardens, it becomes more difficult for birds to forage for food. So do please put out food to supplement their diet and help build reserves for winter.

Flowers and containersDivide old clumps of bearded irises and replant. Chop oriental poppies, lupins, delphiniums and geraniums right down to the ground once they have finished flowering - be brave and be brutal - the new leaves will be an ornament and some may flower again. Support tall delphinium stems with individual canes.Cheat and fill any gaps in your borders with container-grown perennials. Dahlias will keep colour going until the first frosts so are a great autumn brightener in mixed borders. Pick sweet peas regularly - this is in effect early deadheading and will ensure continued flowering. Remember sweet peas are thirsty plants so keep them well watered.Go for instant impact and colour in your garden or on your terrace with a ready planted container; or for a special occasion sink whole containers into your borders for a fabulous instant makeover!

LawnsKeep mowing your lawn but raise the height of your blades if the weather remains hot. Feed established lawns if you haven’t already done so with a summer lawn feed. If your lawn is mossy or full of weeds, use a feed with mosskiller or weedkiller, although this will also kill any wild flowers. If you have the lot, use combined feed, weed and mosskiller!Add your grass clippings to the compost heap in shallow layers. A huge dollop will only turn slimy and spoil your compost.Don’t let newly laid lawns dry out in hot weather - water in the evenings and if there is a heat wave, consider leaving the lawn longer than usual just to help it through the hot weather. If you are planning to seed a new lawn in the autumn, start preparing the area to allow the earth time to settle.Happy Gardening www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk

We’re a week early with this issue so that we can let you know about this year’s carnival.By the time you read this, you may or may not have voted in the European referendum. This paper is available from June 22nd (the day before the polls) so if you are yet to vote - please use your vote wisely. Referendum aside, whatever the outcome, one thing is certain - It’s Carnival Time! The theme this time is ‘The Elements’ and is reflected in our banner on the front page and hopefully in the bright and colourful floats that join the parade. Full details of the event on July 3rd can be found in the official programme, which this year is available for a donation as opposed to a fixed fee. The carnival costs in excess of £10 000 each year and relies on funds generated through donations, stall holders fees, car parking and the street collection. Please do support your carnival by obtaining a programme - if it doesn’t generate the funds -it can’t happen!Fingers crossed for some fine weather and I hope to see many of you on The Carrs on carnival day.

WARSOP

Our Secretary can be contacted on 01623 846281.WF&CG is a community group whose members share an interest in the countryside. We maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment. www.wfcg.org.uk

If you were unable to join us for our April walk to Hanger Hill when we revived the customs of 1816 associated with the perambulation of Warsop’s boundary you may wish to come along to a less energetic event celebrating this anniversary. This will be held on the evening of Wednesday 27th July 2016 in the Tudor Barn between 7:30 and 9:30pm. The evening will include tales from the 1816 Perambulation, discussion of how Warsop’s landscape has changed, a quiz, a prize draw and displays about Warsop’s heritage. There will be a bar and refreshments. Tickets are only £1, available from our stall at Warsop Carnival on 3rd July or see our contact details below. Our fourth walk celebrating the anniversary of the 1816 perambulation of the Manor of Warsop will be along our parish boundary with Clipstone and Mansfield Woodhouse. On Saturday 16th July we will follow the line of the parish boundary as we walk along the edge of Clipstone Park passing the Old Churn and Parliament Oaks before returning past the flood dykes along the Maun valley. We will meet at 10am at the large lay-by on Peafield Lane that is about half a mile beyond Redbrick House when heading towards Mansfield Woodhouse. The walk will be about 4 miles and we will take around 3 hours. Most of the walk will be on good paths but some stretches may be on uneven ground with a few brambles. Stout footwear is necessary and bring a drink. Contact us if you would like more information about this walk. The final anniversary walk will be on 20th August we will walk around Gleadthorpe and Hazel Gap. Our Warsop 1816 to 2016 project is supported by the Big Warsop ROLO fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.As part of this project we have produced a booklet reflecting on the changes to the landscape around Warsop’s parish boundary and describing walking routes. Look out for free copies around Warsop.

The former pit site at Warsop Vale may not be the first place that you may choose for a countryside walk but there is a wealth of wildlife to be seen at this time of year. On a July walk in this area, I noted Brown Argus, Small Copper, Common Blue, Small Skipper and Gatekeeper butterflies. Amongst the flowers growing in the infertile conditions of the former sidings and pit yard were Common Fleabane, Lesser Centaury, Hop Trefoil, Knapweed, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Yarrow and Yellow-wort.This month the Footpaths Group will be continuing the second grass cut of the year along some of Warsop’s public paths. If you can spare a few hours on a Thursday morning to help us please get in touch as this work relies on volunteers willing to do this work.

Warsop Information & Support Outreach ProjectWarsop Infotech Group is pleased to announce that they have been awarded £6.300 by Big Lottery Awards For All, to provide a Citizens Advice Worker - 1 day per week, for 12 months from 1st April 2016 – 31st March 2017. This service also gives service users the opportunity to access online documents on the Citizens Advice Bureau’s website, on 2 new Windows 10 computers purchased specifically for this project. Local residents will be able to use these computers on Tuesdays which is the Citizens Advisors usual day and also other days of the week when the CAB Advisor is not available. This, we hope, will allow local residents quicker access to information they need via the Citizens Advice Website. Local residents who need advice on days when the CAB Advisor is not at the town hall, now have the ability to do so via these new computers.

Volcanic Ash Blocks the Sun1816 became known as the ‘Year without a summer’ due to the effects of volcanic ash from the eruption during April 1815 of Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). The restricted sunlight led to a cold, wet and miserable period with snow in parts of England in May and July. Although Warsop may have fared better than some areas in the west of England, crops would have been damaged by the cold rain and the harvest would have yielded much less than in a normal year. At the time of the 1816 Manor of Warsop perambulation these outcomes could not be fully anticipated but it must have been an unsettling time, particularly for the several farmers who walked the boundary.(As part of our Warsop 1816 to 2016 project Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group are sharing local news stories from 200 years ago)

Members of the council's Licensing, Environmental Health and Neighbourhood Warden teams joined forces to take part in an undercover operation designed to ensure that taxi drivers are fulfilling the terms of their licence and not overcharging passengers.Posing as members of the public, staff boarded taxis to check that the drivers were charging the correct fares and that all the private hire vehicles were pre-booked. During the operation, no evidence was found that drivers were overcharging passengers and no private hire vehicle driver accepted a passenger who had not already pre-booked the journey.

Taxi drivers fare well in undercover operationMansfield's taxi drivers passed an undercover test with flying colours, during a night of action organised by Mansfield District Council.

A taxi driver, who was randomly selected by undercover staff on the night, said: "Drivers take the issue of overcharging very seriously. Negative publicity is very damaging for our reputation and we have agreed to work together to educate the public on what to look out for. This includes making sure the meter is used and explaining how the meter and tariffs work in order to drive out any wrongdoings."When using a taxi or private hire vehicle, there are a number of steps members of the public can take to ensure they are not overcharged and arrive at their destination safely: • Always pre-book a car or get one from a taxi rank. • Note the registration number or licence plate number of the car in case there are any problems and ask the driver for a receipt if you are concerned about being overcharged. • Agree a price up front for private hire vehicles. These must be pre-booked, otherwise the driver's insurance is invalidated. • If using a Hackney Carriage (commonly referred to as a black cab), ensure that the tariff is correct. If you are unsure, ask the driver to reset the meter before setting off. If you experience any problems, you should contact Mansfield District Council's Licensing Team on 01623 463334.Deputy Mayor and Portfolio Holder for Public Protection at Mansfield District Council, Cllr Mick Barton said: "It was very pleasing that the undercover operation did not reveal any breaches by local taxi drivers. We would like to say a big 'thank you' to everyone in the trade who works hard to ensure that they deliver a fair and excellent service to the public. The majority of drivers take public safety very seriously and do everything they can to ensure they comply in full with our rigorous licensing terms."Our Licensing Department carry out these checks routinely and we would like to reassure people that we are doing all we can to stop the practice of overcharging. If you are unfortunate enough to be overcharged, please get in touch with us, as we are determined to stamp out any rogue drivers, who not only exploit the public, but have a negative impact on the good name of other drivers."

Friends of the Carrs kindly lent us their marquee which was funded by Big Warsop for community use and helped erect it, so a big thank you to them. We had merchandise on sale, a raffle and a cake stall. Raffle prizes and cakes were donated by members of the community. The first prize was a large hamper donated by Warsop Co-op, thanks go to them for their support. Big Warsop also gave a donation for us to purchase poppy seeds and sand, thanks to them too. A huge thank you must go to Mike Maceen the fairground manager (who were present on site during our event) who gave us a donation of £100.Karen and Ken Bonsall also joined us again and we were able to make a cheque presentation to the Lee Bonsall Memorial fund of £200. Unfortunately our local branch of the Royal British Legion couldn’t join us this year due to other commitments so at a later date the group made a cheque presentation to them of £200. We are able to do this through the community buying the Real Poppy Campaign merchandise, cakes and raffle tickets, We also receive donations and funding to help us to be able to organise events to support our two chosen charities and most importantly to remember the fallen heroes in WWI with Flanders poppies. Every seed we sow represents three people who died. Thanks go out to everyone who has supported us with this campaign.

Look out for our float in the parade on Warsop Carnival Sunday 3rd July and visit our merchandise stall.

Sunday 15th May was our third year of poppy seed scattering. The weather was on our side with sunshine all morning and lots of people joined us to scatter seeds on the wild meadow area of The Carrs, along the walls and around the cenotaph. It was lovely to see so many people supporting our campaign.

Warsop’s Real Poppy Campaign

Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.

The Friends of ThynghoweThynghowe and the forgotten heritage of Sherwood

www.thynghowe.org.uk www.facebook.com/Thynghowe

Our ‘Spring Thing’ re-enactment at Sherwood Pines in May celebrating King Canute was a superb weekend with a lot of visitors experiencing life in Sherwood a thousand years ago. The Friends of Thynghowe appreciate the support we received from the re-enactors of Regia Anglorum and from the Forestry Commission staff. If you missed this event and would like to discover more about Canute’s connection with the origins of Nottinghamshire we have produced a booklet about the events of 1016 which you may buy from Warsop Footpaths Group’s stand at Warsop Carnival. We will be attending the 3rd Nottinghamshire Local History and Archaeology Day at The University of Nottingham Museum on 9th July. This free event displays the work taking place throughout Nottinghamshire by organisations including local history and archaeology societies, archaeological units and museums. There will be displays, activities, handling of original material and talks. The day is suitable for everyone including those with a general interest, people taking part in historical and archaeological work and those wanting to get involved. In addition to our AGM on October 27th and our Autumn Workshop on 12th November we have now scheduled four work sessions in Birklands Forest when we will be supporting the Forestry Commission in the management of the woodlands. On one Friday in each month between September and December we will clearing vegetation to help protect the archaeology and enhance the ecology of the area. This may sound like hard work but it can be really good fun. All volunteers welcome!

You can find out about our activities from our website and Facebook page and you can email us on [email protected] or contact us by phone on 846281.

Warsop Men’s ProbusPresident Hugh Ashton welcomed members and a guest of Bob Bradley to the Parish centre to a talk by past member Les Nickless. His talk, using computer generated slides and a film, was about the ‘’Bevin Boys’’. The coal mines were short of miners at the start of the 2nd World War so the government  minister Mr Bevin had men conscripted  into the coal mines rather than the armed forces. These men had minimal training and they were sent to the mines and some even had to find their own logins. They came from all walks of life and found themselves working underground. After the War was over and the armed forces came home with demob clothes and money and help to find a job the Bevin boys had to work 2 or 3 years longer in the mines and were eventually demob with nothing and only recently have their efforts been recognised.25 members then had lunch in the Fizherbert room. The next meeting will be on June 25th when member Mr Colin Coombs will talk about his job with helicopters.Hugh Ashton

2nd Warsop Cubs and Leaders attended  the Nottinghamshire Scouts Cubs 100 camp which was held at Southwell Racecourse. The event, which ran from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd May 2016, was organised by the Nottinghamshire Scouts Association to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouts. The camp was attended by aproximately 1500 Cubs from around Nottinghamshire and they had exclusive use of Southwell race course with plenty to keep them entertained. For the daytime, a giant celebration picnic was organised, plus the opportunity to take part in many activities such as: climbing, go-karts, games and craft. There was also a mini 2.5 mile hike around the local area, a gigantic camp fire, disco and cinema to keep the Cubs entertained in the evenings.

Church Vale Primary School competed in their first cross country competition held at Berry Hill School. They performed tremendously as individuals and also as a team. Sam Tattersall was pipped at the post to second place in a tense finish. The whole team did well and showed great stamina across the course. The girls finished 6th overall and the boys team finished forth.

2nd Warsop Cubs

Church Vale primary School celebrated the Queen’s birthday in style. The whole school made party food during the morning and learned facts about the Queen and the royal family. Parents came and joined us for afternoon tea and had a lovely time in the sunshine.

It costs £3 per child, or £2 per child if purchased with a swimming ticket. The Mansfield District Council attraction picked up two accolades at the Nottinghamshire Heritage Awards last night and earlier this year won an award at the Mansfield 2020 Business Awards.Nottinghamshire Heritage Awards were part of the Nottinghamshire Heritage Conference, held at Nottingham Trent University under the title Is the Museum Dead?.  Mansfield Museum won the Best Event award for the Great Made in Mansfield Pub Quiz and was named Heritage Site of the Year from among the entries shortlisted for awards. The inaugural pub quiz event, in which people were invited to enter teams, was held in the Palace Theatre Bar off the museum's Made In Mansfield Gallery. As well as bar refreshments, a musician provided pub piano music and there were traditional pub games to play. There were ten themed rounds, including a trail round the gallery, another involving mystery artefacts to match to descriptions and 25 archive photographs of Mansfield across the 20th century to identify.A second quiz was held across the road from the museum in a pub amid the regulars - a place where few would expect museum activity.

The aim of the evenings was to celebrate the success of the museum's Made in Mansfield industrial gallery on its birthday and to actively take the work of the museum into the community and reach people who may not usually visit the museum. Cllr David Smith, Portfolio Holder for Cultural Services, Town and District Centres, said: "We are all so proud of the museum's achievements in these awards which are thoroughly deserved. "The museum really is an excellent asset for people living in and visiting Mansfield and its excellence is largely down to the great efforts and teamwork of the museum staff and their commitment to making the museum as accessible and as relevant to the local community as possible."In April, the museum won the Commitment to the Community Award, sponsored by the Evolve, at the Mansfield 2020 Business Awards. These are just the latest in a string of successes for the museum in recent years, during which it has been recognised regularly for good practice.

Mansfield Museum named Heritage Site of the YearIt has been a bumper year for awards at Mansfield Museum which has just been named Nottinghamshire’s Heritage Site of the Year.

Executive Mayor of Mansfield District Council, Kate Allsop said: “This wonderful new play attraction and café will give young children hours of fun and is a welcome addition to the centre’s swimming and fitness facilities. With so much entertainment under one roof, Water Meadows offers families a great day out.”Brian Taylor, Chair of the Mansfield and District Leisure Trust, said: “The soft play and café development at Water Meadows is another great example of the partnership approach taken by Mansfield District Council and Mansfield District Leisure Trust. The top quality facilities complement the existing swimming and fitness provision perfectly and will be enjoyed by families from the local community for many years to come.”

Chief Executive Bev Smith spent time with housing repairs team while other directors joined the council’s parks department, went out with neighbourhood wardens and found out more about Mansfield and District Crematorium. The exercise was aimed at helping the recently appointed directors know more about areas of service that are now their responsibility following a senior management re-organisation at the council.Bev Smith said what she learned from joining the council’s plumbers for the morning was how much more the job was than just lagging pipes or fixing a toilet seat.“It’s about how much our staff care about the community – it’s not just about doing a job it’s about the social interaction and understanding that occasionally they are the only people that some residents see in a week. “I also learned how important the whole team is, from the stores ensuring the right equipment is ready, to the tradesmen and women out doing the job, either planned work or in an emergency, to the staff who book the jobs in at the customer’s convenience. The slickness of the operation relies on excellent teamwork which I saw today.”Martyn Saxton, Director of Place and Well-Being spent an afternoon with the Parks teams mowing grass in the Sandy Lane area.“This was a fantastic opportunity for me to get to know one of the new areas within my directorate and to understand and appreciate the work that the front line staff in parks undertake.  “It was really useful to meet so many staff on site whilst actually doing the job rather than sat around a table and I hope to repeat the experience until I have covered all aspects of work with parks.”Director of Communities Hayley Barsby, who spent time with two of the council’s Neighbourhood Wardens, Frank Redmond and Denise Ciarleglio, said: “It was a very enlightening experience and it left me feeling very proud of our wardens. “It is not an easy job but Frank and Denise were brilliant and had such a good connection with the local community.“It is important that we take the time to experience the jobs in which the

decisions we make have the greatest impact.”Mick Andrews, Director of Commerce and Customer Services, who spent time helping out the at the Hermitage Lane Depot garage, which services the council’s fleet of bin lorries and other vehicles, said: “It was a brilliant experience.“I helped carry out a pre-MoT test on a refuse freighter. I also learned about how the garage may be able to generate income for the council around MoTs and other services we might be able to offer. I was really impressed by their enthusiasm for the job and willingness to look at new things.”Director of Economic Growth Mike Robinson spent time on site at the new Poppy Fields development for older people with the council’s design services team.“It was a great experience for me. It was so impressive to see the passion and commitment from George Cook, our Clerk of Works, in ensuring the Poppy Fields scheme was spot-on for the folk going to be living there. “Richard Cooper, our surveyor,  had a great eye for detail, too, in reviewing the kitchen and bathroom improvement works carried to our housing stock, making sure that things were right for our tenants.”Staff throughout the council also had the opportunity to take part in various activities for Learning at Work Week, an annual awareness campaign which has been organised by the Campaign for Learning since 1999 and which aims to put the spotlight on the importance and benefits of learning and development. The event was delivered by the council in conjunction with the UNISON and GMB trade unions. This year’s theme was ‘Connect’ and staff were being encouraged to get involved by having the opportunity to develop additional workplace skills, participate in well-being activities or by simply connecting with a colleague over lunch. As the week was also Mental Health Awareness Week many of the activities were connected to health and well-being.

Council Bosses Learn How Life is ‘on the Front Line’

The Chief Executive and directors at Mansfield District Council went back to the floor last week, taking up roles on the front line as part of the council’s commitment to Learning at Work Week.

Over 95% of respondents feel the two fields near to the Hills and Holes are unsuitable for development; many worry about the impact on the SSSI site through contamination, flooding in the immediate area, the loss of quality farmland when there are brownfield sites available and the ability of Warsop’s infrastructure to cope with an increased population. There are fears about whether the Doctors’ surgeries will cope; if schools have enough places and the increase in traffic and pollution - in addition to concerns about the number of empty properties currently in Warsop. There is also a deep affection throughout Warsop for the Hills and Holes; with many people writ-ing about their childhood memories and how important the area is to them and their families. These findings have been presented to Warsop Parish Council and they have offered their support to the Warsop people should a plan-ning application be forthcoming. The petition has not yet been submitted as we are waiting on the outcome of the Warsop Neighbourhood Plan and the draft Local Plan. At the time of writing no outline planning application has been submitted, however it is expected in the next few months. We are currently fundraising to get professional support in re-searching and presenting our case; this proved very successful for the group opposing the windfarm at Sookholme. We have a Race Night planned at The Plough Saturday 16th July – it should be a fun night as well as raising funds. Also look out for our stand at Warsop Carnival – pop by and sign the petition or buy a racehorse. We have a facebook page ‘Let Warsop Speak’ where opinions and thoughts are welcome. It is people power that has got this campaign this far – your contin-ued support is needed if we are to protect our beautiful rural town from becoming an urban sprawl. LET WARSOP SPEAK TEAM

Let Warsop SpeakCampaign UpdateThe community of Warsop has been amazing over the last few months; thank you to the many people who have given their support to this campaign - to date over 850 people have completed the survey and over 1100 have signed the petition calling on the Local Government Ombudsman to reject the Local Plan until a full and proper consultation with the people of Warsop has taken place.

The Parish of Warsop is lucky it is surrounded by acres of beautiful countryside, no one is ever more than a few minutes drive or a ten minute walk from it and I believe it is countryside well worth fighting for. When developers are planning to build houses on our green and pleasant countryside, it means there is going to be less countryside for people to enjoy. You don’t have to be able to walk through fields to appreciate wheat waving away under glorious sunshine or herds of cows roaming freely munching away at the grass. When developers are allowed to encroach on this land it means it has gone for ever and no amount of landscaping can bring it backTrying to oppose such developments is not nimbysism as I have heard a few people mention but it is common sense. To those who think the countryside is a waste of space and would be better built on; lets look at what it does to help balance the environmental equilibrium. It shelters wildlife, grows food, transpires oxygen and sequesters Carbon Dioxide. Imagine going for a walk along Sookholme Lane to the Hills and Holes one summer’s day free of traffic, being able to enjoy the tranquility of nature and what it has to offer; only for this peace to be be destroyed by motor vehicle after motor vehicle and and new houses with noises blaring from back gardens. If any green land around Warsop is downgrded by the council, then the answer has to be not to build on it but to make the owner of that land improve it or sell it to someone who will improve the land and keep it as fields.Warsop has seen many new housing developments recently,on brownfield sites, such as the transformation of the former Royal Estate and the former colliery site at Warsop Vale, the houses built on the former Welbeck Colliery cricket ground on Oakfield lane and of course the new estate at Spion Kop. Moorfield Farm in Church Warsop is currently being built on and there are plans to build houses as well as an Industrial Estate on Welbeck Colliery. So plenty of new houses have been built and Warsop should, by rights, be bustling. If building these houses hasn’t regenerated the town centre then why does MDC think that repeating this exercise will do so?Mansfield District Council need to take a rain check and instead of looking to build new houses, they need to start ensuring that all the empty houses are occupied and that the infrastructure of Warsop such as health services, schools and other services are improved. I write this month’s article cosily warm at the beginning of our English Summer wearing a fleece and with the heating turned up sufficiently to sustain life!  However, our Choir rehearsals are cheery and energetic and warm the soul.  If you would like to sing with us you would be very welcome, especially if you are a fella. Simply turn up at a practise night and give us a try out. There are no auditions and no necessity  to read music, we are a very friendly group of people.  Age is no barrier either.  Our ages range from sixteen to eighty three. We meet every  Wednesday at The Dukeries Academy, Ollerton, in the refreshment area above the Concert Hall at 7-30pm until 9-30pm.  This is accessed by the Leisure Centre  entrance and car park.We have a web site: thedukeriessingers.com, where all details can be found. We have one upcoming concert which will be a new experience for us on Friday  28th October 2016. It is a  joint concert with ‘Les Baladins des Bords de L’Indre’ from Tours, France, at East Drayton Church. Hopefully, our school days’ French will all magically come flooding back to us!!  Bon chance! The Choir is having a two week break on the 24th and 31st August but will be back in September full of enthusiasm as usual.  Let’s hope for some glimmers of sunshine before then!  Happy Days.
