Wherever Water Flows...Dear Valued Customer:
On behalf of the staff at VAF Filtration Systems, wewould like to thank you for your interest in VAFfiltration products and systems.
Established in 1980, VAF Filtration Systems™ hasbeen providing filtration solutions worldwide for over 30years and has built its business model on the foundationof Simplicity, Quality and Integrity. This brochureprovides just a sample of the products and systems thatVAF can provide to solve your filtration requirements. At VAF, taking care of the customer is truly “Job One”,not just a slogan.
Our flagship product line, the V-Series™, are automaticself-cleaning screen filters, used “Wherever Water Flows”and can remove suspended solids from 1500 to 10 micron.Individual filters and pre-assembled filtration systems areused in applications for Pre-Filtration of membrane, UV and other micro filtration technologies, as well asapplications for industrial water reuse, water andwastewater, cooling towers, seawater, river intake water, well water, groundwater re-injection (Frac water),irrigation and many more.
As the V-Series filters are manufactured in the USA,they qualify for Made In America funding; further, theyqualify for LEED points due to the unique water savingfeatures and energy conservation.
The standard V-Series filters are competitively pricedwhile manufactured in 316L stainless steel. They canalso be ordered to meet ASME Pressure Vessel Code
requirements (ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section VIII, Division 1) if necessary. In addition, the stainlesssteel filter bodies come with a 5-Year Body Warrantyagainst leaks. The patented Bi-directional HydrodynamicDrive (BHD) design DOES NOT require electric motors, limitswitches, gearboxes, hydraulic pistons or any externalshaft seals. The cleaning cycle of each filter takes lessthan 15 seconds and does not interrupt flow during thefiltration process. Visit www.vafusa.com and click onthe “Play Video” link to see a demonstration of thefilter’s operation.
Additional information may also be found on the VAFwebsite for the other products listed in this brochure.Detailed technical data, as well as DWG files may berequested from VAF at any time.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you needassistance with filter or system application and designassistance from one of our experienced ApplicationEngineers.
Thank you again for considering VAF to provide youwith your filtration requirements!
Sincerely,VAF Management & Staff

The V-200 Series features the most advanced and costeffective self-cleaning screen filtration technology availabletoday. Ideal for flow rates from 7m3/hr to 50m3/hr(30 gpm to 220 gpm), the V-200 Series offers a costeffective solution for automatic filtration down to 10 micron.
The V-Series™ patented Bi-directional HydrodynamicDrive (BHD) mechanism used in the V-200 is the mostefficient and simplistic design available resulting in:• fewer moving parts• simpler controls• the lowest flush flow rates and volumes available• no power required• multiple pass cleaning• limited maintenance requirements
Constructed of glass reinforced acetal, glass reinforced nylonand/or 316L stainless steel, the inherently corrosion resistantmaterials of the V-200 Series ensure a long service life undera wide range of water quality conditions.
The 10 to 15 second flush cycle is automatically initiatedwhen a pressure differential across the screen increases to amaximum of 0.5 bar (7 psi). The filter remains on-lineduring the cleaning process. The flush discharge is thelowest available resulting in minimal waste.
Process water, cooling tower filtration, pre-filtration ofmembrane, irrigation, or wherever suspended solidsare removed down to 10 micron are applicationsperfectly suited for the V-200 Series.
When installed with a battery operated controller andvalve, the filtration system operates completely withline pressure without requiring any electricity. The idealsolution for remote filtration applications. (Solar optionis available).

Swedish Medical Center – Seattle, WashingtonSeven 300 Ton Cooling Towers utilizing V-200P skids with aTurbulator Eductor nozzle agitating system; unlike separatorsystems, which have constant circulation, these small, economicalfilter systems only have to operate a few hours a day to maintaina clean basin. Filtering 23 m3/hr (100 gpm) at 50 micron.
PEMEX – Guanajuato, MexicoSeveral wells supplying water to the Pemex facility had centrifugal separatorsthat were not removing fine particulate. VAF installed V-1000 filters with 50micron filtration and the results are “clearly” indicated in the photo!
Amgen Pharmaceutical – Puerto Rico2500 Ton Cooling Tower utilizing a V-1500 skid with 45 kW (60 hp)pump and controls; unlike separator systems, which have constantcirculation, this system provides a cost effective alternative thatprovides significant energy savings due to the fact that it only hasto operate a few hours a day to maintain a clean basin.
Brewery – Tokyo JapanCooling Tower 28 m3/hr (125 gpm) side stream filtration at 25 micron;the side stream supplies water directly to cooling system.
Monash Medical Center – Clayton, AustraliaThis V-250 with 80 micron filtration was installed on the coolingtower system and successfully reduced maintenance expense andreduced blowdowns. Recirculation and filtering the cooling towerbasin is the most efficient way to remove particulate that isassociated with all cooling towers.
Copper Mine – Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde – Arequipa, Peru Cooling Tower Filtration utilizing V-1500 skid with 50 micron at 227 m3/hr (1,000 gpm).

Use the following information for approximating the required filtration flow rate and number of nozzles required:
It is best to use the cooling tower’s basin dimensions to establish the volume of water that needs to be filtered. Determine the flow rate to filter this volume approximately 1 to 3 times per hour. If the basin size is not known, then use the cooling tower’s tonnage to “estimate” the basin volume. Please contact VAF Filtration engineers with any questions you may have to determine your most economical and effective solution for your cooling tower.
Determine the appropriate filtration flow rate.• Estimate the total volume of water in the tower’s basin (skip this step if basin volume is known).
o Gallons = tower tonnage x 5; (example: 300 tons x 5 = 1,500 gallons) o Cubic meters = tower tonnage x 0.019; (example: 300 tons x 0.019 = 5.7 cubic meters)
• Estimate required filtration flow rate to filter tower’s basin volume an acceptable number of times per hour:
o gpm = gallons basin volume x 0.05; (example: 1,500 gallons x 0.05 = 75 gpm) o m3/hr = cubic meters basin volume x 3; (example: 5.7 cubic meters x 3 = 17 m3/hr)
• These calculations provide 3 basin turns in one hour.
Once filtered flow rate and discharge pressure are known, the number of nozzles required can be determined. • Self-cleaning screen filter skids typically require 2.8 to 3.5 bar (40 to 50 psi) pressure. • Centrifugal separator filter skids typically require 1.4 to 2.8 bar (20 to 40 psi) pressure.
• Divide the filtration flow rate by the selected nozzle’s inlet flow rate to determine the number of nozzles that may be operated by the filtration system for the 1/4 and 3/8 nozzles. • Use the table below to select the appropriate nozzle size (1/4 or 3/8) for a sufficient number of nozzles for full coverage of your basin. Basins with complicated geometries or obstructions will require a greater number of nozzles than those with simple rectangular designs.
When equipped with the quick connect clamp, installation is simplified greatly with no need for tapping of holes. This clamp allows for swiveling/adjustments of the nozzles, which will ensure optimum performance.

TIPS FOR ESTIMATING FILTRATION FLOW RATE AND NOZZLE SELECTION
03/2013
VAF Filtration Systems5270 Marshall Street, Arvada, CO 80002 USAPhone +1 303 425 4242 Fax +1 303 425 0112
• When possible, some nozzles should be directed towards the wall obstruction and corners to prevent settling there.
o nozzles are submerged at least 50 mm (2 in)
• Manifolds and laterals should be anchored in place to prevent movement or flotation.
• Nozzles should be oriented so debris is swept towards the pump intake point in the basin.
Use the following information for approximating Turbulator nozzlelayout:
The orientation of the Turbulator nozzles is not an exact science. There are too many variables, such as filtration flow rate and thepressure that is required to operate the nozzles effectively, todetermine the “exact” number of nozzles and their appropriateplacement. The goal is the adequate agitation and coverage ofthe cooling tower basin. Please contact VAF Filtration engineerswith any questions to determine the best economical design andeffective nozzle coverage for your cooling tower.
Proper installation and orientation of Turbulator nozzles result ineffective basin agitation at nozzle pressures between 1.4 and3.4 bar (20 to 50 psi).
Tips for Lateral and Manifold Placement: • Laterals near basin walls or obstructions should be located 0.6 meters (2 ft) from the wall/obstruction. • Place lateral against basin wall in very small basins where only one lateral is required.
• For effective agitation, laterals should be elevated off the basin floor such that:
o nozzles are above the basin floor at least 50 mm (2 in)
TIPS FOR PIPING AND TURBULATORTM NOZZLE LAYOUT
o Optimum spacing of the nozzles is 75% of the “Effective Flow Path” of the nozzle selected.
• Maximum recommended number of nozzles per lateral is:o Ten 1/4” Turbulator nozzles when using 1-1/2” pipeo Five 3/8” Turbulator nozzles when using 2” pipeBefore Turbulator
After Turbulator
Tips for Turbulator Nozzle Placement and Orientation:• Nozzles should be evenly distributed along the laterals. Multiple
laterals should be evenly spaced.

Technical Bulletin
Subject: The ratio of filter screen media pressure loss vs micron ratings
Date: October 2012
VAF V-Series filter screens are a square weaved-wire and sintered construction. The micron ratings are “absolute”, based on the rating scale published by the American Society of Filtration.
There are two variables in sizing weave-wire screens for a given application:
1. Screen micron rating: The micron rating is generally requested by the customer or is based on what size particulate needs to be removed from the water. The size of the particulate removed is the based on the micron rating of the screen and all the particles larger than that rating. The ratio of flow to micron rating uses VAF's maximum allowed flux or velocity (gpm/sq in) through the screen such that the finer the micron the lower the maximum flux allowed, which also keeps the pressure loss across the screen at less than **0.25psi** for any size filter used. This is called “de-rating” a filter's flow rate for a given micron screen.
2. Screen area: Screen area is determined for a given application by making sure the maximum allowed flux is not exceeded for the desired micron filtration. As flow rate increases, the screen area is required to increase in direct proportion.
For any given model of filter, from VAF’s smallest model V-200 to our largest model V-8000, each model's screen open area is approximately 5 to 8 times greater than that model's flange opening size. This means that the velocity (pressure loss) through the flange is greater than the velocity (pressure loss) through the screen's micron opening.Hence, the pressure losses across a filter’s inlet / outlet are more significant than through the screen.
** An independent testing laboratory has measure pressure losses through the different V-Series models', with various flange sizes and various micron screens. The test results showed that for any given micron screen, the pressure loss through a clean screen never exceeded 0.25 psi at its maximum allowed flux.

Automatic Self-CleaningScreen Filter Selection
All material contained herein is proprietary to Valve and Filter Corporation and is protected by US Copyright laws. 08.20122
DisclaimerThis document is provided to assist the engineer in narrowing the options of V-Series automatic self-cleaningscreen filter models available from VAF Filtration Systems. It is the intent that this document provide the engineera “sense-of-magnitude” in determining V-Series filter requirements for a given project.
Automatic self-cleaning screen filter performance is primarily a function of the following:• pressure• flow• total suspended solids (TSS)• distribution of particle sizes (PSD)• particle type and characteristics (fiber, solid, flake, sand, etc.)• desired filtration degree (micron)
Sizing an automatic self-cleaning screen filter for a given project is more of an art than it is a science. Theinformation provided herein is mostly based on years of developing empirical relationships between factorsaffecting filter performance for specific filter models. So, it is not the case that the information provided has clearlines of distinction for any application.
VAF does not warrant the use of its proprietary information provided herein. It is required thatVAF be contacted to obtain the manufacturer’s final recommendation to warrant the applicationand the filter selected.
Use of the ChartsThe charts in this document are designed to select a V-Series filter model based on single filter flow rates. However, multiple filters are frequently installed in parallel such that the cumulative sum of each filter’s flow is thetotal flow required for a given project.
Controls are provided with the V-Series filters that flush these filters individually and in sequence so the flush flowrate of each filter is the total flush flow rate for multiple filters installed in parallel. By installing multiple V-Seriesfilters in parallel, one could design a very large flow rate filtering system with a very relatively small flush flow rate. There are occasions (ie. large banks of multiple filters in parallel) that call for more than one filter to flush at thesame time. In those cases, the total flush flow rate is the sum of the individual filters flushing at the same time.
For each micron rating and its respective maximum TSS shown, the charts herein show a range of flows availablefor each V-Series model filter. The maximum flow (as shown in the charts) for each model at the maximum TSSfor a given micron rating is mostly representative of well water with sand particulate. If the particulate to be filteredis mostly oraganic (algae) or something other than sand, then the maximum flow allowed for a given model mayhave to be reduced. Always contact VAF when conditions approach maximum TSS values for a given micronrating or maximum flows for a given V-Series model filter as shown in these charts.
The minimum flow rate allowed for each standard V-Series filter model is simply that model’s flush flow rate.Special configurations are available to operate a V-Series filter with filtered flows less than its flush flow rate.

Select the pressure available to the filter during the flush cycle and match with the filter model selectedto determine that filter’s flush flow rate.
System hydraulics should be designed such that the sum of the filtered flow rate required plus the filter’sflush flow rate is the minimum flow rate that must be available during the flush cycle.
Filtered Flow Required + Flush Flow = Min Flow Available to the filter during its flush cycle
Otherwise, a control valve may be installed downstream of the filter to shut down or throttle the filteredflow during the flush cycle to allow the minimum flow rate to the filter to be as low as only the flush flowrate.
Flush Flow = Minimum Flow Available to the filter during its flush cycle with a downstream control valve
Contact VAF engineers regarding configurations available when the flush flow is greater than the filteredflow required.

V-SERIES AUTOMATIC FILTERHow It WorksPlease refer to the cutaway of the “V” series filter shown.
Dirty water enters the filter through the inlet (1) and then passes through the coarse screen (2) from the outside in. It flowsfrom the inside of the coarse screen to the inside of the fine screen and then passes through the fine screen (3) from theinside out. Dirt is collected on the inside surface of the fine screen. The clean filtered water then exits through the filter outlet(4) and on to the system.
As the dirt or cake builds up on the inside surface of thefine screen, the pressure drop across the screen increases. When the pressure drop (the DP or differential pressure),reaches a preset level 0.5 bar (7 psi), the filter controllerstarts a flush cycle by opening a flush valve on the flushline (5). This flush valve exhausts the drive chamber toatmosphere at “0” psi.
The flush line (5) is connected to the drive chamber whichis separated from the filtration chamber by a drive chamberpartition (6). However, the dirt collector (7) (a hollow pipewith dirt collector nozzles) extends through the partition (6),thus providing a “path” from the dirt collector nozzles (8)through the hydraulic drive (9), into the drive chamber andout the flush line (5) to atmosphere. The pressure aroundthe dirt collector nozzle (8) is the pressure inside the filterand as water flows through the “path”, it drops to “0” psiwhen it leaves the flush line (5). This creates an aggressive“suction” at the dirt collector nozzle (8) opening. The dirtcollector nozzle (8) clearance at the fine screen (3) is very small. So, the extreme low pressure at the nozzle opening createsa backflow which “sucks” the dirt from the fine screen (3).
The hydraulic drive (9) has jets on opposite sides near its ends. Water jetting out of these openings (coming from the dirtcollector nozzles (8)) creates a reaction force (like a pin wheel) which rotates the drive (9) and the dirt collector (7). As thedirt collector (7) rotates, each dirt collector nozzle (8) cleans a band on the fine screen (3).
As the dirt collector (7) rotates, the reverser (10) (works like the level winder on your fishing reel) causes the hydraulicdrive (9) / dirt collector (7) / dirt collector nozzle (8) assembly to move back and forth. The rotation governor (11) helpscontrol the rotation speed of the dirt collector (7) assembly. The balance piston (12) helps balance the transverse pressureon the assembly, and powers the reverser indicator (13) which provides visual indication of the dirt collector (7) assemblymovement showing that the entire cleaning system is operating properly during the rinse cycle.
After a preset time, the flush valve closes and the rinse cycle is complete. Very little rinse water is used for each rinse. Please note the filter continues to supply water to the system during the rinse cycle.

General InformationThe V-SeriesTM design is the most recent, state-of-the-art self-cleaning screen filtration technology availabletoday. The complexity and cleaning efficiency of anyself-cleaning screen filter is in the mechanical systemthat drives the cleaning process. The V-Series patentedBi-directional Hydrodynamic Drive (BHD) mechanism isthe simplest and most efficient in design resulting in:• fewer moving parts (no limit switches or pistons
reversing the cleaning mechanism),• simpler controls,• lowest flush flow available,• greater cleaning efficiency, and• lower maintenance requirements.
The V-Series’ 12 to 15 second flush cycle is automaticallyinitiated when a pressure differential across the screenincreases to 0.5 bar (7 psi). The filter remains on-lineand the filtration process remains uninterrupted duringthe brief cleaning process. The flush discharge is thelowest available resulting in minimal waste.
The V-Series filters are available in ASME code and aremanufactured in an ASME facility. The filters are availablein a broad range of materials, pressure ratings, andtemperature ratings to suit any need. VAF custommanufactures filters and skids that simplify installationand meet specific requirements.

VAF Filtration Systems: V-Series Self-Cleaning Filter Specifications
Furnish __ V-Series automatic self-cleaning screen filter(s) Model V-____-__-____ as provided by VAF Filtration Systems (VAF). The filter(s) shall provide uninterrupted filtration at ______ m3/hr (gpm) through a ______ micron weave-wire screen.
Operation Water shall flow into the 316L stainless steel filter body and through the 316L stainless steel weave-wire filtering screen from the inside out allowing blocked contaminants to accumulate on the inside surface of the filtering screen. Differential pressure across the filtering screen shall be continuously monitored as the filter cake builds on the inside of the filtering screen. When the differential pressure reaches an adjustable threshold (recommended to be set at 0.5 bar (7 psi)), a flush cycle shall be initiated by the opening of a flush valve. The opening of the flush valve drops the pressure inside the drive chamber allowing flow to reverse through the suction scanner nozzles. The suction scanner nozzles transfer this reduced pressure at the nozzle location onto the inside of the filtering screen surface. This reduced pressure on the inside of the filtering screen creates a reversed flow through the filtering screen, pulling the contaminants off the screen, back through the suction scanner nozzles and out the flush valve. Once the nozzles have traversed and cleaned the entire screen surface, the flush valve shall close, stopping the flush cycle. The filtering process shall remain uninterrupted during the flush cycle.
Cleaning Mechanism The filter cleaning mechanism shall provide a controlled spiral path for the suction scanner nozzles across the inside surface of the filtering screen. The opening of a __ inch flush valve shall create suction forces at each of the __ suction scanner nozzles creating a reversed flow through the filtering screen and into the nozzle orifice. The reversed flow through the filtering screen shall force the contaminants from the filtering screen, back through the suction scanner nozzles and out the flush valve. The surface area of each suction scanner nozzle shall not exceed 0.20 (0.28 for V-3 & V-3500) square inches to provide minimal flush waste. The optimum distance of the suction scanner nozzle to the screen shall be fixed by the manufacturer and shall not be adjustable to prevent the reduction of manufacturer’s designed cleaning performance. The flush flow shall not exceed ___ m3/hr (gpm) at 2 bar (30 psi). Each cleaning cycle shall be completed in less than 15 seconds (20 seconds for V-3 & V-3500) to further minimize flush waste. The minimum pressure required shall be 2 bar (30 psi) to assure high cleaning efficiency. The cleaning mechanism assembly shall be constructed of 316L stainless steel and glass filled Nylon. The suction scanner nozzle assembly shall be constructed of CPVC.
Drive Mechanism The drive mechanism shall not have electric motors, limit switches and/or hydraulically actuated pistons that exit the body and return the drive mechanism to its start position. For cleaning efficiency, the drive mechanism shall allow the suction scanner nozzles to traverse (travel bi-directionally) over the screen surface and return to their start position without interruption of the cleaning cycle, and if required, to continue this cycle indefinitely without interrupting the flush flow. Drive systems that do not continuously clean bi-directionally as the suction scanner nozzles return to their start position will not be accepted.
The suction scanner shall be driven by an internal Bi-directional Hydrodynamic Drive (BHD) that is directly attached to the suction scanner. The BHD shall utilize the flush waste flow during the flush process to provide forces that rotate the suction scanner. The suction scanner shall rotate on a double axial spline that allows the suction scanner nozzles to traverse across the screen and return to their start position without interrupting the flush process and without the aid of an external return mechanism,
Page 2 VAF Spec 2012
such as electric motors, limit switches and/or hydraulically actuated pistons. Each suction scanner nozzle’s rotation shall overlap with its prior rotation by no less than 10%.
The drive mechanism shall include a pressure balance line. This pressure balance line shall balance forces on each end of the suction scanner to reduce forces on the drive mechanism, thereby minimizing mechanical wear and excessive flush waste.
Filtering Element The filtering screen element shall be 316L stainless steel weave-wire with ____ micron openings. The screen surface area shall be _____ square inches and shall consist of no less than __% open area. The filtering element shall consist of 3 layers constructed of 316L stainless steel, and shall be fabricated to allow for maximum open area and strength. The filtering element layers shall be the 1) filtering screen, 2) dispersion screen and 3) the structural screen. The fine filtering layer shall have no other layers between it and the suction scanner nozzles to assure contaminants are not trapped between layers during the flush cycle. Screen manufacture shall be by a “sintered” process in order to maintain quality and filtration degree integrity.
Filter Housing Construction The filter housing and cover shall be manufactured from 316L stainless steel and shall be manufactured according to ASME code (ASME, Section VII, Division I, U Stamp available upon request). Filter housing and internal assembly seals shall be constructed of EPDM. Internal pressure shall not exceed 10.3 bar (150 psi) and operating temperature shall not exceed 80° C (176° F). The filter body assembly shall be capable of accepting interchangeable filtering screen elements from 1500 to 10 micron. Filter flanges shall conform to AWWA Class D (or as specified by customer). Filter body coatings shall not be required.
Filter Controller The filter(s) control system shall control all aspects of each filter’s operation, including but not limited to flushing by:
DP Only (Default) Time & DP (DP will always override Time if there is a DP flush required.) Continuous flush Fault indicator (24 VAC terminal provided for external alarm) Manual Flush Reset NEMA 4 enclosure
The filter(s) control system shall be provided by the filter manufacturer.
Filter shall be USA manufactured and shall be as provided by VAF Filtration Systems, 5270 Marshall Street, Arvada, Colorado 80002, +1 303 425 4242.

Hydraulic Filter
General InformationThese automatic hydraulic filters combine theadvantages of high quality filtration from different watersources (sewage, reservoirs, lakes, etc.) with self-cleaning features, where the flow is uninterruptedduring the filtration process.
The filters are designed for use in a wide range ofindustrial, municipal and irrigation applications.
The main element is made of stainless steel with alarge filtration open area for water flow in order towithstand high dirt load and pressure. Cleaning of thescreen is performed once the pressure loss across thefilter has reached the preset value (up to 0.5 bar or 7psi).
The flushing valve opens and pressure is released fromthe hydraulic piston, then water flows outside throughthe flushing valve. Pressure in the hydraulic motorchamber and the dirt collector is significantly lowered, the dirt collector nozzles movement and rotation cleansthe screen’s entire internal surface. The flushing cycletakes 5 seconds. The flushing valve closes at the endof the cycle and the filter is clean.
During the cleaning cycle, the filtration processremains uninterrupted.

FiltrationWater enters the filter through the “Inlet” (1) and passes through the fine screen (2), which purifies the flowby separating the smaller particles from the water. As more water flows through, impurities build up on thefine screen. As impurities on the screen accumulate, a pressure imbalance is built up between the internalsection of the fine screen (2) and its external section.
Cleaning ProcessWhen the difference in pressure reaches the preset value on the differential pressure indicator, or the dueltime between flushing passed, a series of events is triggered while water continues to flow to the systemunits. The controller transmits a signal for a 10 second flushing cycle. The flushing valve (4) opens, pres-sure is released from the inner side of the fine screen (2), the electric motor (5) simultaneously rotates thebrushes (3) around its axis. The brushes wipe all of the dirt and effiicently clean the entire internal screen(3) surface.
At the end of the 10 second cycle, the flushing valve (4) closes and the operation of the electric motor (5) isstopped. The filter is now ready for the next cycle, with clean filtered water flowing through the “Outlet” (6).
The 10 second flushing cycle resumes operation whenever the difference in pressure reaches the presetpressure value set on the differential pressure indicator. If the pressure difference remains unchanged afterone cycle, another cycle will start after a delay of 10 seconds.

The flushing valve opens and pressure in the flushingchamber and the dirt collector is significantly loweredresulting in a suction process via the suction nozzles tothe dirt collector and from there through the flushingvalve outside. The electric motor simultanenouslyrotates the dirt collector and moves it along its axis. The combination of the vertical movement and rotationguarantees that the suction nozzles will cover the entireinternal screen surface, efficiently cleaning the screen. The whole process takes 15-20 seconds, and thefiltration process remains uninterrupted.

DisclaimerThis document is provided to assist the engineer in narrowing the options of P- and PL-Series automatic self-cleaning screen filter models available from VAF Filtration Systems. It is the intent that this document provide theengineer a “sense-of-magnitude” in determining P- and PL-Series filter requirements for a given project.
Use of the ChartsThe charts in this document are designed to select a P- and PL-Series filter model based on single filter flow rates. However, multiple filters are frequently installed in parallel such that the cumulative sum of each filter’s flow is thetotal flow required for a given project.
Controls are provided with the P- and PL-Series filters that flush these filters individually and in sequence so theflush flow rate of each filter is the total flush flow rate for multiple filters installed in parallel. By installing multipleP- and PL-Series filters in parallel, one could design a very large flow rate filtering system with a very relativelysmall flush flow rate. There are occasions (ie. large banks of multiple filters in parallel) that call for more than onefilter to flush at the same time. In those cases, the total flush flow rate is the sum of the individual filters flushing atthe same time.
For each micron rating and its respective maximum TSS shown, the charts herein show a range of flowsrecommended for each P- and PL-Series model filter. The maximum flow (as shown in the charts) for each model atthe maximum TSS for a given micron rating is mostly representative of well water with sand particulate. If theparticulate to be filtered is mostly oraganic (algae) or something other than sand, then the maximum flow allowedfor a given model may have to be reduced. Always contact VAF when conditions approach maximum TSS valuesfor a given micron rating or maximum flows for a given P- and PL-Series model filter as shown in these charts.
The minimum flow rate allowed for each standard P- and PL-Series filter model is simply that model’s flush flowrate. Special configurations are available to operate these filters with filtered flows less than its flush flow rate.

VAF Hydrocyclone Separators are effective inremoving suspended particles 40 micron andlarger from any flow stream of fluid where thespecific gravity (density) of the particle(s) isheavier than the fluid it is in; the moresignificant the difference in gravity between thefluid and the particle, the greater the efficiencyof the removal process. Depending on thespecific gravity of the particle and the viscosityof the flow stream, denser particles as small as5 microns can be removed. NOTE: Particulateremoval can be enhanced if multiple passes ofthe stream can be achieved.

To select the optimal separator, match your flow rate to the listed flow range. Operating below the specified flowrange will result in low efficiency. Operating above the specified flow range will impose unnecessary pressuredrop across the separator.

General InformationThe F76 removes harmful dirt and debris from yourwater supply, and extends the life of pumps, valves, fixtures and storage tanks. The F76 is ideally suitedfor sediment removal applications which wouldquickly plug and restrict the flow of normal filters.
With our new back-flush system, NO disassemblyor cartridge change is required in order to removecollected sediment and debris. Simply opening thebottom vent activates a spinning water jet propeller, which thoroughly cleans the filter screen from theinside out, in just seconds. Full flow is restored inminimum time, at no cost.

Why the F76 Works Better
The F76 is so easily and effectively cleaned it can beused even where high sediment content makes use ofcommon filters impossible. The F76 has an extremelyefficient built-in back-washing device. It also suppliesfiltered water on demand even while backwashing. Nolonger must the water supply be interrupted to clean thefilter.
The F76 is backwashed by simply opening the ballvalves seen on the lower portion of the device. Thiscauses water to flow in reverse direction through thefilter. To increase the effectiveness of cleaning, water ispropelled through the filter in a powerful jet stream fromthe rotating impeller. This patented device completelycleans the filter of buildup, restoring full flow in a fewseconds.
Typical Applications
• Private wells, Municipal• Recreational water• Home water• Process water• Protection of sensors for pressure, flow, chemicals or temperature• Protection of solenoid valves• Protection of water source heat pumps• Precipitate removal from chemical water treatment systems• Drinking fountains, soda vending machines, etc

Backwash Cycle
Activating the Backwash CycleThe bottom drain ball valve is opened, manually or automatically by the AMV-76 Actuator/Timer. Venting pres-sure at the bottom of the filter sump causes the spring loaded internals to shift downwards, creating a bypassthrough the filter. In addition to diverting the water for backwashing, the bypass also provides an uninterruptedsupply of filtered water to the system during backwashing.
This shift of the internals changes the flow path, reversing the direction of flow through the filter screen. Thisreversed flow is forced through small orifices in an impeller, which spins rapidly, directing concentrated “pulsat-ing” water jets through the screen. Dirt and debris are quickly washed off the screen and out the vent.
Complete cleaning and restoration of maximum flow capacity are accomplished in just seconds. When thedrain valve is closed, the internals shift back up to their normal operating position, and flow path returns to itsnormal route through the filter screen.
The AMV-76 Automatic Backwash Motor is designed to clean your filterautomatically, according to a programmed schedule. Instead of waiting forthat telltale drop in water pressure, use the Automated Backwash Motor tokeep your F76 filter running efficiently. Just set it once and forget it!
The AMV-76-DP Automatic Backwash Motor can flush the F76 whendifferential pressure reaches a preset level, or off of a programmable timeinterval. With the DP flush the AMV-76-DP provides more responsive filtercleaning for systems with varying conditions and loading.

General InformationIf you pump water, you know how important it is to keepequipment running smoothly and water flowing freely.Whether you are pumping water from a stream, canal, river, ditch, pit, sump, or pond, you need the water to befree of debris that could block water flow, damage thepump, clog water distribution equipment or damageprocess equipment.
The Self-Cleaning Suction Screen is galvanized or epoxycoated and utilizes a heavy 12, 18, or 24 mesh stainlesssteel screen designed to increase pump efficiency. Thescreen continuously removes debris from water. Thissaves time and money in fuel, pumping efficiency, andmaintenance costs. The Self-Cleaning Suction Screenscan be used for agricultural, turf, industrial, centrifugal,or turbine pump applications.
The suction screen is attached to the end of the pump inthe water source. All water pulled in must traverse thescreen before entering the intake pipe. The screen stopstrash and debris from entering and causing costlymaintenance requirements in your system. The pumpdischarge return line drives two spray bars that continuallyrotate, jet water at the screen, and blast debris away fromthe screen at 2.8 to 4.5 bar (40 to 65 psi) operating range.
The suction screen has no exterior moving parts. It canbe installed at any altitude without the operation beingaffected. The screen is uncollapsible and corrosionresistant and also has a standard flanged connection.Other connections are available upon request

General InformationVAF’s Model VF -AC electronic filter controller offerssimplicity with all the features necessary to fullymonitor and control the operation of self-cleaningscreen, sand and media filter systems.
This controller allows flush cycles to be initiated by:• manual,• periodic (time between flushes) and/or• pressure differential across the filter.
Up to 4, 8 or 12 parallel filters may be connected tothe VF -AC controller. Multiple filters flush sequen-tially when a flush cycle is initiated. The controllerthen checks to be sure the pressure differential hasdropped to zero, indicating the filtering medium hasbeen cleaned. Should the system experience threeflush cycles without the pressure differential drop-ping to zero, the VF -AC will send an alarm signal.Upon power failure, the VF -AC will continue withoutdata loss.
To ease installation, optional stainless steel strapsare available that allow the controller to be mounteddirectly to the body of a V-Series filter!
