The Campagnolo "Croce D'Aune Gruppo"Campagnolo establishes new standards in component technology!

On November II , 1927, while racingup the Croce O'Aune mountain pass inItaly, Tullio Campagnolo suffered a fl attire . Replacing the tire was impossib le the axle nuts were locked in place becauseof the ice-and Tullio could only watchhis competitors ride away.

BUI the loss stayed with h im and Tullio•

went home to ponder this mechanicalproblem . To prevent such problems inthe future, he invented the quick re leaseskewer The quick release became thefirst Campagnolo pate nt and the standardfor the bicycling industry. The Croce

D'AWle G m ppo is one mo re series ofpatents thai will continue our historyof setting standards for the industry.

:-':0 other components have a moredistinguished parentage, and none canstand so firm ly on their own. The CroceO'Aune gruppo will move the race reven closer to the sup .-eme precisionand race-winning performance fou nd inthe state-of- the-art CampagnoloRecord gruppo.

The name Croce D'Aune is pronounced Crow-chey-down-eye.

Croce D'Aune Crankset

The Croce 0 'Aune crank arms, withtheir beautifully unique geometry, aredesigned to have exceptional shearstrength, enhanced rigidity and durability.

The Croce D'Aune crankset has beendesigned by Campagnolo Researchand Design Engineers using computersand full field stress analysis. Thismethod determined how the crankswould transmit as much of the cyclist'senergy as possible through the full rotation of the chainwheel.

The curvature of the arms constrainsthe degree of bottom bracket frametwist and flex by red ucing the lengthof the bottom bracket axle . When thelateral line of action is longer thannecessary, it causes the frame to twist, thus wasting the cyclist's po wer. Themounting tapers are set as close aspossi ble to the bottom bracket centerline. A short axle saves energy byreducing the length of the lateral armof leverage.

During the full-fi eld studies, theCampagnolo Engineers examined -in both the laboratory and racingsettings-the tensile properties of theAvional alu minum alloy (the sam e thatis used in the Record) in the crank arms.As a result ofthis research, they developedand are using a new molding process incurrent p roduction. This new techniqu eprovides a more thoroughly integratedfibral structure of the alloy.

The anal ytic studies also helpedproduce the best ergonomic profile ofthe crank arms. The expanding radialcurve of the arms gives the pedalssuitable spread for proper position ingof the fe et with appropria te chainstayclearance and increased ankle clearancefor those who ride in a substantial toeout position. The crank arms are 11 Ofofurther apart at the pedals than atthe tapers.

The crank arms are held in placeon the bottom bracket axle with theCampagnolo 7mm alle n bolt incorporated extractor Croce D'Aune crankarms can be attached and removedwith a 7mm allen wrench and theCampagnolo 7mm allen wrenchstabilizer (no. 1203003). This is thesame as the system used on the Recordand Victory cranks.

2

The crank anns feature a contactcollar at the pedal hole . This collarhelps improve the power transfer fromthe pedal to the crank ann. The improvedtransfer is especially importan t forsprinting and climbing.

The Croce D'Aune chainrings aremade from the same wear resistantalloy, Avional, as all Campagnolochainrings. Every cha inring is cut too thby too th by a computer controlled gearcutting machine using the standardCampagnolo tooth profi le that has provedto extend the life of the chainrings andthe chain.

The chainrings are cut in an asymmetrical pattern. The center lines of the teethare close r together than the center linesof the chainring bo lting seats. Thisprevents narrow chains from fallingbetween the chainrings during shiftsfrom the large to small chainwheel.

The chainring bo lt circle (135mm)is the same as Record and Chorus. Chainrings are available in sizes from 39 to 5 7teeth . The cha inrings from 4H to 57 teethcome with a pin to prevent the chainfrom being caught between the cra nkann and the chainring. Croce D'Aune andChorus chainrings are in terchangeabl ewith one anothe r.

The bottom bracket is similar toother Campagnolo bottom brackets. The symmetrical axle is case-hardenedstee l. Both axle and cups are precisionground and rotary polished for use withCampagnolo high precision bearings.

The If4N hardened chrome-steelbearings come in matched sets with atolerance of .001 mm (1 micron). The ball bearings are held in a specialresin retainer, which helps retain and

spread Campagnolo lub ricants aroundthe bearings and over the races.

The axle opening in the cups hasthe special helical channe l to preventcon taminants from infiltrating and

•impairing the action of the bearingsand races. Bottom bracket cups andbearings are interchangeable withNuovo Record.

Crank arms are available in lengthsof 167.5, 170, 172.5 and 175 mm .Pedal threads '¥J6x20.Inner chainrings are avail able from39 to 47 teeth .O uter chainri ngs are available from48 to 57 teeth.Bottom brackets are ava ilab le in French,English and Italian threads. All bottom brackets include a d ust sleeve.Bottom bracket overall length : I II mm

Croce D'Aune Headset

The Croce D'Aune headset is manufactured with the general aes theticsof the Record headset. The four facedwrench fiats, for more positive wrenchsupport, is a shared feature. These fou rflats are found on the adjusting cupand the locknu t. The lockwasher; thatis recessed inside the locknut forimproved locking action, is anothershared featu re.

But it possesses some internalinnovations. The lower headcup raceis supported and cush ioned by thematerial we call SELFO RM, a semielastic polymer that helps reduce theeffect of road shock. The SELFO RMliner helps d ispe rse fork loads-from both the rider and the road across a larger bearing area throughself-aligning deformation. This avoidssingle points of high stress andbrinnelling of the headsets.

The lower race has a non-contactnylon shield to keep road contaminantsfrom penetrating and adversely affectingthe lower races and the bearings.

To help ens ure proper control of thesteering action and un iform loaddispersion, the headset bearings (3,1 6")are supplied in matched sets consistingof bearings tha t are all within a .OO! mm(one micro n) tolerance. The bearings arecaged in a special resin re tainer. This

Vol. 2 No. 6

retaine r helps retain and spreadCampagnolo lubricants around thebearings and over the races.

The headset race and cone surfacesare hardened steel that has been speciallycut an d rotary polished to ensure propercontact and load d ispersion. The expected life of this he adset is do ublethat of conventional de signs.

Rear Derailleur

The basic problem a derailleur has tosolve is that of moving its jockey pulleyso that it co nsistently tracks the geometryof the freewheel. Trad itional derailleursuse a vertically hung, join ted parallelogram to move the jockey pulley and cageon an ax is that is almost parallel to theaxle of the wheel. This system utilizes theovershift and return technique used bymost cyclists.

The Croce D'Aune rear derailleurshave a new system that allows theshifti ng to take place in an exceptional lyfast and smooth action even w hen itmust gu ide the chain across a widespread of freew heel cogs.

This new, patented, "TWIN-AXLESystem" has improved sh ifting bymoving the jockey wheel and cagethrough a variable ax is that tracksthe conical plane of the freewheel cogs .This allows the cage to sit at a constantproximi ty to al l the cogs on a freewheel.By main taining this align ment, the oversh ifting necessary with the trad itionalsystems is avoided.

The Twin-Axle System of thesenew derailleurs works this way:

I) \ \Then the cable is pulled th ederailleur's parallelogram bodyrota tes on the uppe r pivot bolt, swinging back much the same way aRecord derailleur would whe n pulledback for wheel removal.2) When the body swings back, thestainless steel transversal arm pushesthe pulley cage inward toward the spokesand away from the axle of the hub, creating the proper spacing fo r largerfreewheel cogs . The pulley cage tracksalong the conical p lane of the fre ewheel,gu id ing the cha in from one cog to thenext with the jockey pulley remainingequidistant to the cogs.

With this double action and the lackof preset loads, the Croce D'Aunederailleu rs feel lighter and smootherd uring the shift than most other systems.

The lateral limit is set by two screws, which restrict the amount of fore and aftrotation of the main body. These screy.osare located on the upper body, makingthem less susceptible to any damage thatcan occur in an accident. Both screwshave he ad s thai allow either a standardflat or phillips screw driver to be used.

This derailleur also has a forwardrotation adjusting screw to finetune theprimary angl e of the derailleur This isespecially usefu l when installing thesystem on bicycles that lack Campagnolod ropouts. It also comes with the doublescrewd river fi ttings.

A bu ilt-in cable tensioning barreladjuste r is included with th is derailleurand is especially useful with the Syncrosystem. The parallelogram pivots useTeflon-coated stainless steel pins toensure long life.

The jockey and idler pulleys are bothsemi-elastic po lymers carried on adjustable cup, cone and ball bearing systemsidentical to ORecord. This ensures longlife, red uced friction and quiet running.

Gear Capaci ties:Small Pulley Cage: as large as a 30 Toothfreewheel cog.Large Pulley Cage: as large as a 33 Toothfreewheel cog.

These large capacities are for systemswith an 18 tooth difference in the largeand small chainwheels.

Front Derailleur

The front derailleur has been speciallydesigned for today's newest chains. As aresult of this design , it sh ifts accuratelyand quickly due to the low coefficientof friction.

The Croce D'Aune front derailleuris built to withsta nd the demands ofcompetitive cycling. It features ananodized aluminum bod y with Teflontreated, stainless steel p ivot pins. The cage is formed from chrome-plated ,heat-treated steel. This cage is profiledto provide ultra fast shifts withoutneeding after-shift trims, even if thechain is at the extre me crossover angles.

T his front derailleur is available ina standard sized d amp-on and a braze-onversion. It is also available with anadjustable damp for frames with oversized seat tube diameters from 28 to33 mill imeters.

Croce D'Aune Brakes

The C roce D'Aune brakes are basedon the proven design of the RecordDelta b rakes and still possess thevitally important "progressive action:'

" Progressive action" is a new conceptd eveloped by Campagnolo. This actionis delivered through the " PentaDrive System:' a cen terpull articulated pentagram. The b rak ing actioncomes on very quic kly, for movementsuch as maneuvering th rough a pack

•of rid ers. But duri ng the high -speedacti vation, it has low mechanicalleverage to avoid the chance of lock-up. Thefurther the le..-er is pulled, the d ampingaction becomes more powerful. For

4

example. 3 Kg ,fi .ti Ibs.) of forceapp lied to the lever can be transfo rmedto II Kg ~2 4 . 2 Ibs.) of brake pad p ressure .

The Penta-Drive System is mad eup of a double series o f four stainlesssteel arm s and a cable locking pivot. The arms are all connected with fiveTeflon-treated . stainless steel pivots sothat thee form a pentagon shape.

Wh en the cab le is pulled, the cableanchor p ivot slid es up ward in a guidebuilt into the caliper body. At the sametime, the cable anchor seal that hold sthe cable casing pushes the upper roddown. These two motions cause the truerconnected arms to force the caliper topress against the rim.

The force being transferred to thecaliper is equally and automaticallyd ivided by the contractua l and compressive ac tion of the Penta-Drivemechanism. This ensures that the brakewill remain centered and that equalfo rce is applied to the brake pads onboth sides of the rim .

The design of the brake pad holderallows the surface of the b rake pad tobe adjusted to match the rim's profile.T hese pads can be tilted to match a co nventional rim, like the Sigma Strada,or the triangular shape o f the OmegaStrada " V· Profile:'

The brake pad hold er is also equippedwith toe-in adjusting screws that allowthe proper degree of angle to be set forthe rims being used, a handy way toeliminate b rake squeal.

The Croce D'Aune brake levers canbe used with the cables being ron throughthe hand lebars, under the tape or in thetradi tional open loop. They also featurethe patented ~Power Grade System.,"wh ich offers the possibility of micrometric adjus tment between the Tate ofpower applied to the lever and the speedof deliv'ery to the calipers.

A 2 mm allen sere....~ accessiblethrough a small slot in the front of thelever; allows degree-of-cam angle and therate of lift to be adjusted to suit therequirements of the ride r, the wheels andthe environment.

The quick-release mechanism islocated in the brake lever. This pushbutton type quick-release allows thelever to rotate further. The extra rotation, approximately 12 mrn, feeds more cab le

to the caliper and allows it to openmore. If more wheel clearance, via thequick-release, were needed to preventrim drag, this would give the wheelclearance without affecting either thebraking power or the full-on position ofthe lever.

The result of this innovatio n in thelever and the caliper is a smooth, powerful, consistently pred ictable, progressive braking action . T his elirninates slipping and lack of precisionin braking.

Caliper Drop Range: 39-49 mm_Handleba r Diameter : 23.8 -24.2mm.

Croce D'Aune Pedals

The Croce D'Aune pedals are basedon the same design parameters of ergonomic balance as the Record pedals.T he result provides better balance andtransfer of energy as the foot movesthrough the stroke of the pedal.

This pedal uses the " 'llip le BearingSystem" paten ted by Campagnolo. This special system reduces axle lengthproducing a more efficient transfer ofenergy and increases the angle of leanfor better cornering than standard pedals.

Vol. 2 No.6

The axle has been reduced to fiOm min length. It has eliminated the need forstandard spherical ball bearings at theouter end of the axl e. A set of rollerbearings has been incorporated to carrythe vertical load in this area, while adouble series of Vs" beari ngs is at theother end of the pedal body to carry theinner vertical load and maintain late ralstability.

With the reduced overall diameter ofthe roller bearings at the outer end ofthe axle and the tapered pedal bod y, theinclination angle has been signifi cantlyimproved. Standard pedals are lim itedto 28 degrees of inclination in a corner. The Croce D'Aune can pass through thecorner at 3-1 degrees. This means h igherspeeds through the sharp corners ofboth criteriurns and mountain descents.

The inner Iwo sets of bearings canbe adjusted to eliminate play withoutintroducing excessive friction . A gre aseinjection port is located in the pedalbody that allows fresh grease to beinjec ted into the bearings which fl ushesout the old grease without a completeoverhaul of the pedal.

The pedal axle's inner shoulder, near the crank arm threads, has a conically exp anded profil e that results ina wider area of contact between the pedaland the crank arm for more efficientpower transfer.

Croce D'Aune Hubs

The hu bs, which follow theCampagnolo Record hub profile, are ava ilable in 28, 32 and 36 hole, small flange configuration with 6 or 7speed axles. All come with the patentedCampagnolo quick release.

The hu b shell has a hole in eachdust cap and in the center of the shellfor grease injection. This allows the axleand the bearings to be properly relubricated without disassembly. Thecen ter hole is covered with a springclip held in p lace by the reinforcingshoulders of the she ll center. Theseshoulders also p rotect the hub shell fromtorque wind-up.

The bearings are supplied in matchedsets with a .001 mm (1 micron) tolerance. The cones and the races are all rotaryground and polished to properly utilizethe high-precision bearings. The bearing races are case -hardened for extendeddurability.

Croce D'Aune Seatpost

The Croce D'Aune Sea tpost featuresthe same slim-line profile of the RecordSeatpost. The saddle carrier cage isdesigned for seats using -1 mm rails. The carrier cradle can be adjusted intwo-degree increments using the 6mmallen bol t.

The seatpost comes in both the 130 mmand the 180 mm lengths- the 130mmlength is for frames smaller than 49.Scmand the lS0mm length is for frameslarger than SOem . It is ava ilable in allstandard diameters.

Campagnolo's Syncro index system isnow over two years old. The Syncrohas been received in the marketplacewith great enthusiasm and it has alsoscored well o n the racing circuit withour Campagnolo Sponsored teams,In fact, it was used by Ken t Bostickto win the National Road Cham pion shipin '87 and also byJ ames Urbanos of theUS Nationa l Cycling Team du ring hisimportant stage win in the Russian BalticSea Race last year.

Early this year Campagnolo introd uced Syncro n. a simplified versionof the original race prov'en Syncro.Syncro n can be used with the samederai lleurs, chains and freewheels as theoriginal Syncro; it even uses the samegear inserts as its olde r brother, Syncrc.Alo ng ....-i th the introduction of SyncroII, Campagnolo has also introducedthe Chorus, Athe na a nd Croce D'Aunerear derailleurs. Because the geometryof these derailleurs is d ifferen t fro mou r previous gt'ar changers they req uired ifferent gear inserts when used withSyncro . In order 10 keep the Syncrosystem as simple as possib le the sameshift lever is used for every Carn pagn oloderailleur and you only have to changethe gear insert to match the derailleurthat you intend to use. For example, saythat you have theSyncro system o n yourbicycle w ith a Vicrory rear derailleuran d you would Iik~ to upgrade the d rivetrain with a Chorus derailleur: The onlything that you must do is replace thegear insert in your Syncro lever withthe appropriate insert for the Chorusderailleur, that's all. Campagnolo hascolo r coded the Syncro inserts so that youcan (ell at a glance which insert to use.
