N Coming on dock I had tho first sight in my lifo of an active vol- cano of tho school geography typo a mountain summit bolching forth flanio and smoke. I had previously looked over tho brink of Kilauea's iunor crater, when, as was tho popular phrase at tho time, the bottom of tho lako of firo had dropped out. Pour years later I looked into that Jnko whon its surging waves of molten lava came within polo reach of tho ledgo on which tho visitors reclined. Tho scone now behold a score and a half of milos away, from tho deck of tho Kinau, is different from thoso other grand spectacles oil tho mountain sido. This is just liko tho school-boo- k pictures of Vesuvius. ahead on tho starboard quarter tho out- lines of tho mountain triplots of Hawaii aro clear in the light of tho descending moon. From tho summit of tho middle mountain Mauna Loa a pillar of fire is limned against tho sky. It is in- tense red, super-impose- d by a fil- my pink reflection, and a ragged whip of smoko, streaked deep black, oxtends toward Hualalai's peak like a warship's homoward-boun- d pennant. am not rash onough to estimate tho height of tho pillar of light, but sond here- with a rude sketch that will con- voy a fair idea of tho beautiful sight. Gardner Wilder aud Howard Hitchcock aro up, and givo tlio opinion that tho eruption is to- ward tho Kim sido. Thoy aro not dogmatic on tho question, how-ove- r, as tho plateau on tho summit is a milo and thrco-quart-r- s wido. Our volcanic isle, at al events, is proving equal to moro than ex- pectations of its performance of duty. "Yoleanoos in any stylo on tap," it may advortiso itself. Ki- lauea is unique among known volcanoes, whothor in roposoful or in porturbod moods. Enough has not been mndo of tho fact that it is well worth Booing oven whon tho fiery flushings of its lakes and ooiios have rucoded, as they havo a fashion of periodically doing. Hero, however, wo havo within (loiivoniunt roach of four conti- nents u real duplicate of VohiivIuh. It may be viewed, moreover, at long rango without any ovorland travel whatever. I just caught a glimpse of it, while tho Bteamor was turning, froin Mr. Bockloy's desk whoro those lines aro written. I would say in all sincerity that I consider tho Bight ovon from tho steamer woll worth tho cost of tho trip to Hilo. There is a constant- ly changing aspect in tho specta- cle. Our artist mav ronroducn thn THE Sketched 111 i.i.ktin by Dead palo I scene now, making tho mountain as donso a black as his plato will carry. Tho pyrotechnic glow is mode brighter by contrast. Its baso seems to broaden now, and there aro upshootings of flaming vapor at difforent points. There is every appearance of a lako of firo in violent commotioa over an area so oxtonsivo as to beggar the grandest displays in Kilauea. Samuel Parker has como aboard to .havo a crack with tho ship's company. He says tho eruption is in tho summit crater, and ho ought to know. Mr. Porker coos to Honolulu by either tho Iwalaui or tho Hall. Possibly tho expedition for tho summit may push through to tho Volcano Houso tonight. Dr. Dillo will mako tho journey if ho finds that ho can possibly do it and cntch this Kinau to return. It would bo no small advantago, in tho intorest of tourist travel from tho Coast, to havo a lecturor of such ability seo tho marvelous phenomenon at close quarters, as ho rotums to San Francisco on May 9 and this eruption bids fair to continue for months if not years. Samo Day, 5:45 a. m. It is broad daylight now, and tho Yolcauo presouts a tamer, yet still an interesting aspect. A vast column of smoko, with voluminous lateral sproadings, rises over tho apex of the mountain. Skotcli en- closed. 'It is clearly apparent now that if tho eruption is in tho summit crater, it iB toward tho Kau vorgo. At tho samo time that it is on tho summit is ovidont from the fact that tho inoidonco of tho column does not chango its relative position to tho contour of tho mountain. If it was any con- siderable distanco down tho Kau Bido, tho pillar would not continue, with the changed point of view as tho steamer is now moving in an opposito direction from what it was always directly over the contor of tho summit. ThoBulletin is tho only paper in theislands which has ono of its staffon tho spot, and its readors arowoll awaro thnt Mr. Logan isabundantly able to do justice totho occasion.

    S. S. Kinau, off Kdwaihao,April 25, 3 n, m.

Sliding off my couch at thishour, tho smoothness of tho waterindicating tho proximity of tholand, I was mot at tho foot of thosaloon stairs by Purser Beckloy,

    "W

VOLCANO AS IT APPEARS 1'IIOM MAHUKONA.for tlio U. Howard Hitchcock.

who, with a gesture toward thodeck, remarked in. deop tones :

"Dan. Logan, you want to go upthere now. It shows up beauti-fully." N

Coming on dock I had tho firstsight in my lifo of an active vol-cano of tho school geography typo

a mountain summit bolchingforth flanio and smoke. I hadpreviously looked over tho brinkof Kilauea's iunor crater, when, aswas tho popular phrase at tho time, the bottom of tho lako of firo haddropped out. Pour years laterI looked into that Jnko whon itssurging waves of molten lava camewithin polo reach of tho ledgo onwhich tho visitors reclined.

Tho scone now behold a scoreand a half of milos away, from thodeck of tho Kinau, is differentfrom thoso other grand spectaclesoil tho mountain sido. This isjust liko tho school-boo- k picturesof Vesuvius. ahead on thostarboard quarter tho out-lines of tho mountain triplots ofHawaii aro clear in the light oftho descending moon. From thosummit of tho middle mountainMauna Loa a pillar of fire islimned against tho sky. It is in-tense red, super-impose- d by a fil-my pink reflection, and a raggedwhip of smoko, streaked deepblack, oxtends toward Hualalai'speak like a warship's homoward-boun- d

pennant. am not rashonough to estimate tho height oftho pillar of light, but sond here-with a rude sketch that will con-voy a fair idea of tho beautifulsight.

Gardner Wilder aud HowardHitchcock aro up, and givo tlioopinion that tho eruption is to-ward tho Kim sido. Thoy aro notdogmatic on tho question, how-ove- r,

as tho plateau on tho summitis a milo and thrco-quart-r- s wido.

Our volcanic isle, at al events,is proving equal to moro than ex-pectations of its performance ofduty. "Yoleanoos in any stylo ontap," it may advortiso itself. Ki-lauea is unique among knownvolcanoes, whothor in roposoful orin porturbod moods. Enoughhas not been mndo of tho fact thatit is well worth Booing oven whontho fiery flushings of its lakes andooiios have rucoded, as they havoa fashion of periodically doing.

Hero, however, wo havo within(loiivoniunt roach of four conti-nents u real duplicate of VohiivIuh.

It may be viewed, moreover, atlong rango without any ovorlandtravel whatever. I just caught aglimpse of it, while tho Bteamorwas turning, froin Mr. Bockloy'sdesk whoro those lines aro written.I would say in all sincerity that Iconsider tho Bight ovon from thosteamer woll worth tho cost of thotrip to Hilo. There is a constant-ly changing aspect in tho specta-cle.

scene now, making tho mountainas donso a black as his plato willcarry. Tho pyrotechnic glow ismode brighter by contrast. Itsbaso seems to broaden now, andthere aro upshootings of flamingvapor at difforent points. Thereis every appearance of a lako offiro in violent commotioa over anarea so oxtonsivo as to beggarthe grandest displays in Kilauea.

Samuel Parker has como aboardto .havo a crack with tho ship'scompany. He says tho eruptionis in tho summit crater, and hoought to know. Mr. Porker coosto Honolulu by either tho Iwalauior tho Hall.

Possibly tho expedition for thosummit may push through to thoVolcano Houso tonight. Dr. Dillo

will mako tho journey if ho findsthat ho can possibly do it andcntch this Kinau to return. It would bo no small advantago,in tho intorest of tourist travelfrom tho Coast, to havo a lecturorof such ability seo tho marvelousphenomenon at close quarters, asho rotums to San Francisco onMay 9 and this eruption bids fairto continue for months if notyears.

Samo Day, 5:45 a. m.It is broad daylight now, and

tho Yolcauo presouts a tamer, yetstill an interesting aspect. A vastcolumn of smoko, with voluminouslateral sproadings, rises over thoapex of the mountain. Skotcli en-closed. 'It is clearly apparentnow that if tho eruption is in thosummit crater, it iB toward thoKau vorgo. At tho samo timethat it is on tho summit is ovidontfrom the fact that tho inoidoncoof tho column does not chango itsrelative position to tho contour oftho mountain. If it was any con-siderable distanco down tho KauBido, tho pillar would not continue, with the changed point of viewas tho steamer is now moving inan opposito direction from whatit was always directly over thecontor of tho summit.

I cannot thank Purser Beckloytoo heartily for his kindness inplacing hiB desk at my disposalnight and day, and for the assist-ance ho is rondoring in ascertain-ing mail facilities on whoro.

    POLITICAL REVIEW.

Sinco the Inst in nil tho llnwnii-n- nLegislature lms accomplished

very littlo beyond fmnlly passingtho appropriation bill for salariesand pny rolls, which goos to thoPresident today. After workingfifty days on tho bill, tho amountvoted exceeds tho amount in thooriginal bill by $300. In thoSannto Minister Damon's bill torefund tho present bondedindebtedness of tho coun-try by issuing a now lonnat 4-- per cent, with an allowanceof 15 per cent for discount and2. por cent for commissions, waslaid on tho table by a volo of 7 to0, aftor much consideration ofelaborate majority and minority re-ports. Tho big discount and com-missions allowed wero tho causeof tho untimely end of tho bill.Tho project is not dead, and willprobably como up again in thoshape of a 5 por cent loan at paror a 4 per cont loan at 97 with 2per cent allowance for commis-sions.

The Houso bus boon fritteringaway its time on tho appropria-tion bill until tho last few days.It is now engaged in undoing thowork of the Sonato on tho licousobill, in which operation it willprobably put in another week, necessitating a conforenco be-tween tho two Houses on thatmeasure.

Tho Executive's bill, appropria-ting S7fi0,000 from tho proceeds oftho proposed loan, has been intro-duced in tho Senate andis now in tho hands of thoprinter. Among tho principnlitoms are 32,000 for new schoolschoolhouses and. teacher's cot-tages, 25,000 for a central firestation in this city, 30,000 for anow wharf at Hilo, S127,700 forlinrbor improvements at Honolu-lu, S220.000 for now roads on Ha-waii, $35,000 for now roads in Ho-nolulu, $10,000 for tho road overtho Nuuanu Pali, $39,000 forwaterworks improvements in thiscity and $50,000 for immigration.Consideration of this bill will givetho Sonato plonty to do next week.

    ABOUT THE VOLCANO.

Of all tho Honolulu papers thoEvening Bulletin is the only onowhich has had ontorpriso enoughto send a lnombor of its stuff topersonally visit and write up thefresh eruption of tho volcano ontho summit of Mauna Loa, thohighest mountain in the HawaiianIslands, whose lofty crest towers13,(575 foot above tho level oftho sea. This paper, then, is thoonly one from which an accurateaccount of tho present eruptioncan be obtained. It does not re-hash for its readers an ac-count of an eruption whichtook place half a scoro of yenrsago and in a different locality, but it presents everything obtain-able by personal inspection con-corni- ng

tho prnsont outbreak as itactually appears. Having nuuloprevious visits to tho Kiliiuenvolcauo and being familiar with

pounds, and valued at$385,077, representing a littlo overone-fortio- th part of this year'ssugar crop of Hawaii. Inciden-tally it may bo mentioned that thovessel took on tho wholoof this largo cargo at onoof tho wharves and that whon bIioleft she was drawing 27 foot 8inches of water. Waiting for business to grow.

The only way to get tradeis to ijo after it and bring itback with you and keep itwhen you have got it. Thisis our doctrine and we prac-tice what we preach. We goafter the trade of Honoluluand the Hawaiian islands byadvertising for it, and we findthat it pays us to use wholecolumns of the newspapers indoing so where many mer-chants only use inches. Thereis no use denying that adver-tising will bring trade, but anyamount of advertising won'tkeep it. The only way to keepthe trade we get by advertisingis to sell good reliable wares, and never misrepresent an ar-ticle we advertise. We havenever done this yet and wedon't intend to commence atthis late day. The successwhich has attended our intro-duction of the wonderful"NEW PROCESS" BLUEFLAAE COOKING STOVE,is an instance of the way wedo business. We accepted theagency of this stove because weknew its merits. We advertis-ed it with certain guaranteeswhich in every case have beenfulfilled. Our sales last weekwere phenomenal but in everyinstance the stove sold hasdone just exactly what we saidit would.

The Wonderful "New Pro-cess" Blue Flame Oil Stove, is acoal oil stove that gives a pow-erful blue flame; that operateswithout the slightest smoke orodor; that uses commonCoal-o- il (Kerosene); whichwill do the work as quicklyand perfectly as any Gas orGasoline Stove and in theoperation of which there can-not be the slightest fear of ac-cident. It is the most econo-mical operating stove in theworld, and a stove that admitsof drawing light and heat fromthe same barrel.

We have these stoves in twosizes. The larger with threetop burners and oven is soldat 2?; the other with twoburners and oven is $22.0.

Wouldn't you consider aronn capable of doing tho mostintricato work, capablo of doingtho simple work also?
