PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGEParade Awards, maybe this year after all.

The other night I was reading over therequirements for PCA National Awards tobe given out at this year’s Parade andpreparing our entries. Of course, BobSpeights, the RMR enthusiast of the year,was proudly nominated as our nationalentry for 2004.

Next, I was gathering up items, photosand information to submit RMR for theRegion of the Year Award for 2004 when Irealized it is pretty much a scrapbook con-test. According to the rules, the Regionwinner is judged on growth, generalimprovement or maintenance of high stan-dards in activities, meetings, newsletter,and adherence to or the further-ance of the objectives and idealof Porsche Club of America. Thepresentation is supposed to be ina scrapbook format with colorpictures, and copious verbiagepresenting the story effectively tothe PCA Executive Committee.

PCA suggests the club appoint acommittee on scrapbooks at the beginningof the year to assemble and set the presen-tation for the following year’s Parade.This scrapbook stuff pretty much makesme yawn, but as I struggled to put some-thing together for each of the 13 criteriafor the last minute submission, I wasexcited by RMR in 2004; we had a specialyear with members, friends, events andour cars.

RMR has a great story to tell. We are avery active region and contribute in manyways to the community, members andother Porsche clubs. For example, in2004 we sponsored 3 charity events; theConcours D’Elegance raised $40,500 forCerebral Palsy, the 9 Cares food drive andGmund fund raiser were also successful.Because we share our schedules andevents with our AMR friends who put onseveral events too, we attended a total of:15 driver education days in 11 events, 5autocrosses, a 4-day tour in southwestern

western Colorado and New Mexico, a sur-prise overnight rally/tour, a TSD rally, andan autocross on frozen Georgetown Lake.We organized a 3-day Mt. Rushmore tourwith Dakota and 4 other regions (article inPanorama 11/04), attended Fiesta delPorsche with Roadrunner region, sharedmany events and special meetings withAlpine Mountain, and attended the Zone 9meeting to make presentations on eventchair and instructor training to otherregions. The Gmund event attractednational Porsche representatives and fea-tured the 356 and Schlepper Registry con-cours, race car display and the one andonly timed Schleppercross around conesin the pasture. We held the NationalConcourse Judges’ meeting, event chair

meeting and joint board meeting.Remember the holiday party, dinner tour,picnic in the rocks, 3R meeting, and swapmeet? We had dinner and watched the 5thannual RMR movie, Secret of Life, aboutthe 2004 season gone by.

RMR presented educational seminars ontechnical car repairs, the Motorhead U.driving seminars, and monthly topical pre-sentations at membership meetings. Wetrained tech inspectors, driving instruc-tors, corner workers, new chair people,board members, committee members, con-trol, timing, and countless volunteers. Wehad Ladies Day with 56 great womendrivers. We hosted a national club raceweekend and DE day. All done by volun-teer effort, and well appreciated by thosethat attended.

We continued with the Challenge Series,the organizational framework for a friend-ly competition for members of RMR and

AMR to encourage participation in alltypes of events by recognizing drivingaccomplishments over the season and cul-minating in the award ceremony for par-ticipants finishing in the 22 various class-es of Porsches.

At the national level, RMR members par-ticipated in the Parade rules committee, asPCA Zone 9 rep, as Club Race stewardsand scrutineers, as concours judges, andthe many RMR Parade fans headed southto join the week long event. RMR hasmore Club Racers than any other region,and they appear on the podium regularly.Our instructor program is a model fornational, and our instructor corps teachesdrivers at all levels at our driving events.Finally, we committed to host the 2009Parade and the organizing committee hasbegun identifying locations.

At home, when our local race track, self-managed by the area car clubs, was losingits lease, we turned out to get the city toextend another year. We joined with othercar clubs to move towards financing andbuilding a new multi-million dollar track,and worked hard to get to that goal; step-by-step, legal issues, civil engineering,real estate diligence, organizing, fundrais-ing, and countless meetings. That effort ispaying off in 2005 with a good chance forthe new track happening.

RMR kept driving event registration feesamong the lowest in the country whileoffering fun and educational, weekendrecreation. RMR has $80,000 in the newtrack deal with an additional amount pos-sible behind that. Moreover, our club’sfinances remain strong with a surplus for2004 operations and reserve funds in thebank. The RMR board and President JimEverson operated a responsible, safe agen-da of programs and events. Membershiptotaled 1,023 members.

Finally, we made and lost some wonderfulfriends in the club last year, and we con-tinue to care about the club, the friendswe have, and yes, (Continued Page 4)

our Porsches. Iknow RMR was a winning region in 2004on all counts. I hope we take the successand enthusiasm of 2004 with us into 2005.I just don’t have the scrapbook stuff totell PCA in what I feel is a quality presen-tation, the RMR 2004 season story. Our2004 was better than any scrapbook I canassemble could tell. Maybe nextyear….not!

Well, how about this year? At the lastminute, I emailed the PCA nationalawards chairman, Lanean Hughes, sug-gesting RMR would apply differently thanthe rules provide by sending the 2004movie[you can watch it on the RMR website www.rmrporscheclub.com ], the briefwrite-up about the year with all the infor-mation, and a copy of the newsletter.Lanean was very encouraging and gavethe green light for our unusual submis-sion. It turns out, the scrap book formathas fallen out of interest with regions, andPCA national is searching for new formats

for this award competition. RMR’sunusual presentation for the upcomingParade will give national something tothink about indeed.

Looking to next year, scrapbooks stillbore me to tears, so there is no chance ofdoing one myself. But, I hope some othermember is an ardent scrapper or multi-media producer, and volunteers to start ona presentation concept for 2005. Withthe enthusiasm and effort being put forthalready this year, I bet we can win the2005 award for the Region of the Yearwith some help on a presentation.[Contact me to volunteer]

Come have some fun at the Creek on July10, 2005, at the Annual Day After DE, fol-lowing Ladies’ Day on July 9.

The weather’s sure to be great (unlike thesnow-out at Continental Divide Racewayon April 30), and everyone should take fulladvantage of Second Creek during this lastyear’s reprieve. So if you attended Ladies’Day, plan also to attend the Day After andcontinue to hone your driving skills. Ifyou didn’t drive on Ladies’ Day, don’t feelslighted, but come out for the Day After.This will be a no-times DE, but a goodtime will be had by all.

We will, of course, have our usual comple-ment of driving instructors, whether youhave never driven on a track before or ifyou’re working on improving your tech-nique. Mo will be open as concessionaireduring the day, and beer thirty will followat the end of the day when all the cars areoff the track, so everyone can share storiesabout the day’s and weekend’s adventures.

On April 16th nearly 80 driversgathered for the first drivers’ edevent of the season at SecondCreek. Flight of the Phoenix,Second Creek rising from theashes, was the theme of theevent. The spring weather coop-

erated with perfect track condi-tions. This No Times event wasthe perfect venue for gettingeveryone warmed up for theseason ahead. Many first timersadded to the success of theevent. I think all had a great dayon the track with no seriousmishaps. Those who stayed forbeer thirty and could answerthose tough Porsche trivia ques-tions won some of the goodiesdonated by our very generoussponsors – 3R Racing andPrestige Imports. Make sure to

Since no one wanted to sled the DragonSlide on April 30th we have moved thisevent into July. This rescheduled drivereducation event will take place July 23-24,2005. Continental Divide Raceway is achallenging and exciting track at the MeadExit on I-25, 33 miles north of I-70. Thetrack is in good shape so you don’t have toworry about dodging any potholes.

Note that the Tour that had been scheduledfor this weekend has been moved.

Gates open at 6:30 am and the mandatorydriver’s meeting begins at 8:00 am.

This month we bring you 2 perspectives of oneof the country’s greatest road courses asdescribed by Paul Gutowski and GeorgeMcDonald who drove this year’s race in differ-ent race groups. Let’s see how their viewscompare……………

Road Atlanta - April 1, 2, 3Paul Gutowski

Commitment. That is what it takes to circu-late this track quickly. With two huge brakingzones and a cinch ‘em up and pray turn 11 and12 complex, it rivals Road America for beingrewarded for large amounts of circulatingtestosterone. No left foot braking here- if youare going to use them, make it count. A returnvisit with track knowledge should lead tonoticeably lower lap times.

Road Atlanta is a 2.52 mile natural roadcourse with significant elevation changes, blindcorners, a wide, smooth surface and graveltraps galore. The ground that the track is builton is ‘Georgia clay’, which does not absorb thefalling precipitation. As cars would leave thetrack it looked as if they were splashingthrough a lake. This is one of Don Panoz’stracks and is home to ALMS’s ‘Petit Le Mans’and before Mid Ohio it hosted the SCCARunoffs. It was the home of the PorscheDriving Experience until that moved to BarberMotorsport Park. It is a beautiful facility and awonderful track.

The day prior to our arrival it was 86degrees and sunny. When we arrived it waspouring rain, as it would off and on untilSunday. Friday we arrived at the track at noonas the rain was lifting and we were able to drivethree practice sessions, which set the tone for

the whole weekend. As in Friday practice daysat most PCA Club Racing events, there are carson the track with no track knowledge alongwith others that are very familiar. I am learningmore and more about what the word patiencemeans on a race weekend. Each of those ses-sions contained close calls from behind for bothKim and me and watching our mirrors becamea priority. We were both surprised at how wellthe track flowed and we quickly began to learnit and work on reference points for braking intoturns one and 10A, and how to deal with 11 and12.

six stories in about 5 seconds, and there is anoff camber entry to the right hand turn 12 at thebottom. Apex early and there is a six foot con-crete wall waiting for you a few feet from theoutside of the track, as at least two drivers dis-

covered during the weekend. Did I mention thestanding water on the clay surface? No Puebloturn 10 saves here, folks. The appropriate mix-ture of respect and bravado had to be deter-mined. We left a significant amount of time onthe table here, which I believe could be foundon the next trip.

Road Atlanta contains a section of trackwhich I consider to be my favorite of any trackwe have driven, including the over-ratedCorkscrew at Laguna Seca. Uphill out of turnone, blind left into two, then into a long com-plex of downhill, then uphill right-left turns thatdone right is just magic. Plenty of opportunityto pass in here as well. Eventually you are on along winding straight that leads to the big brak-

ing zone for 10A. It isdownhill at the braking point(130mph or so in my car)which then turns uphillbefore the turn in point.Where is your brakingpoint? The question is: doyou feel lucky, punk? Everytime I thought that I couldn’tgo any deeper, I realized thatI had not soiled myself andmore commitment wasrequired.

The track sessions them-selves became an embar-rassment at times and quitefrustrating. Between the usu-ally wet and cold conditions

and poor judgment from many drivers, tracktime was limited, especially in the race groupthat Kim and I were in. I believe that the fastestgroup consisting of all the Cup cars sufferedfrom the same plight. Our qualifying session

Sunday ended after 2 laps when an experiencedand fast driver parked it on the exit of a turnand we watched the checkered flag fly whilesitting in the hot pit lane under a black flag. Iwas told, and I believe, that on the first lap outfor the qualifying session (which was a yellowflag lap) three cars spun and two had contact. Iestimate 10% of the cars suffered damagethrough the weekend and many were significanthits.

This was an event that had only one raceduring the weekend and after many complaintsI think that they will add a second sprint race oran enduro. Kim was embroiled in battle with 5other cars and those six finished within 6 sec-onds of each other at the line. She was secondin class. I was able to slip by 2 slick-shod993RSR’s at the start and was passed by oneafter his tires warmed up and the remainder ofmy race would have been boring had it notbeen for the 14 laps of green flag conditions.The GT3 cars (my class) that were 1st and 2ndoverall in the race, one on slicks and the otheron DOT’s- are twin turbo cars that admittedlyare putting out close to 600hp from small dis-placement engines. It appears as if the 1.4 mul-tiplication factor needs to be revisited for theturbos as their technology has advanced somuch in recent years. These cars were six sec-onds a lap faster than the quickest of the factory993RSR’s.

The Cup car group also had a full race withthe Premier Motorsports combo of AndyWilzoch and Chris Cervelli performing well.Chris finished 5th overall, behind a 962, two996 RS’s and one other stock Cup car (hisclass). Andy was in a huge battle with 5 othercars, all finishing less than 0.8 seconds apartfrom one another.

Other notables were George McDonald,Bobby Dahlstrom and Tony Clinton (honoraryRMR member). George writes about hisaccount in this issue. The chief NationalSteward was Vicki Earnshaw who was profes-sional and treated us likewise throughout whatwas undoubtedly a stressful weekend with somany incidents. She had plenty of opportunityto castigate us as a whole or as individuals butdid not do so. She presented a fair and intro-spective discussion during the ‘Orientation’meeting (read 13/13 meeting) where I wasasked to present my new hat from Sebring. Ietched the number ‘13’under the cap so I amreminded of my prior indiscretion every timethat I put the hat on. I was planning to burn the

hat after my probation is over. However, afterwatching so many indiscretions from others thisweekend, I think that I may always keep itaround to remind me what this is really about-safe, fun, intelligent racing.

Next - Mid Ohio in May…

Road Trip to Road AtlantaGeorge McDonald

WOW!!! What a track. Road Atlanta is a BigBoy track. Yes, the lady racers will call it thesame. There is something very special about atrue road course. In the case of Road Atlantait has all the things that elevation changesbring, with blind approaches to three of thetwelve turns. Turn one is uphill, wide, andvery fast. Turn three starts a roller coasterride through “the esses” that you just don'twant to see end. At the end of the backstraightaway (only one mile long) you havea fast chicane leading uphill under a bridgewhere all you see is Atlanta sky followed byan eternity looking for the track and the out-side apex. It takes so long to crest the hilland finally see where the track is and hope youare still on the track much less the right line thatyou might as well have just closed your eyes.Remember the part about incredible elevationchanges, well turn ten is only about a 90 ft. ele-vation change and it all happens in just 150yards.

The trip takes two long days of towing andalways hoping for good weather. Spring isalways a tricky time to travel to a race. The triphad it all; rain, howling winds, sun, cool tem-peratures, and even snow. The good news wasthat Sunday, race day, the weather was cool,sunny, and dry. A perfect day for making goodpower and cool-running motors.

Arriving at Road Atlanta on Thursday night Imet up with fellow GT5 racers BobbyDahlstrom and Tony Clinton. They had alsocome from Colorado. We were starting to set upand unload the cars and we were greeted byvoices that we knew. Yes, travel all the way toAtlanta and there are Paul and Kim Gutowski.A short time later, another friendly hello; VickiEarnshaw, who was going to be one of ourStewards. Good news, Vicki only needed totalk to us about how we liked the track or howwe were doing and not about any bad stuff. Youknow, like what were you thinking, or “that was

a bonehead move.”

The track is very fun to drive. It is actually quiteeasy to learn the line; however it is tough to gofast. It takes no time to feel comfortable drivingthe track but with the blind turns and elevationchanges it takes a long time to build up confi-dence to go fast. This may not make any sense,but with the blind turns you need only to be inthe ball park. The track is so wide, trying toend up in the best spot on the fastest line withno visual references is not always possible. So,if you are "in the ball park", just go for it, don't

over-slow the car and know everything will beOK. Oh yeah, that’s easy to say, try telling yourright foot to hammer it when you still can't evensee where the track is. Remember that turneleven under the Bridge? Where the hell doesthe track turn? It is (in most cars) a fourth gearright hander, flat out with a concrete wall 15 ft.off the track after you make the turn. Thatbeing said, the track, with that one exception, isvery safe with all kinds of room to go off.

My race weekend was good. I did chase astrange handling problem but qualified 9th, fin-ished 6th, three seconds a lap faster, and third inclass with Bobby winning the race and Tony avery close second. I can't wait to go back!!!
