Squash is a great sport for people of all ages from youth to senior. Itimproves hand/eye co-ordination, agility and flexibility and providesa good cardio workout and fantastic stress relief - you can hit that littleball as hard as you want!

The Uxbridge Squash Club is not-for-profit, run by volunteers andhas operated in our community for well over 30 years at Uxpoolwhere there is now one International-style court. Adult Clubmembers (aged 16+) play one another in box leagues: currently theycan choose to play up to three scheduled matches weekly, on Monday-Tuesday evenings, Wednesday-Thursday evenings and/or Saturdaydaytime. Regular season play runs from September through April. The Club also normally holds three tournaments each year: fall(usually November), winter (usually February) and at the end of theseason in April. The fall and winter tournaments are open to non-Club players, but the season championships in April are for Clubmembers only.

Squash league regular season: September - April.

Annual Squash tournaments (with prizes, food & refreshments):

• John Tweedy Memorial Nov. 21-26, 2011 (open to all comers)

Heritage Uxbridge is a committee commissioned by the UxbridgeCouncil to act as an advocate for the preservation and conservation ofheritage properties in the township.

The committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who carry out anumber of on-going responsibilities throughout the year, workingwith the community and the township members assisting with andadvising in matters related to heritage and cultural aspects. In pastyears, the committee has developed and organized guided tours, andpublished articles and maps that help promote Uxbridge's culturalheritage. Further, the committee continues to maintain a close watchon the Pickering Airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect anyproperties of historical value found within that area. It also produceda Heritage District Sign By-law to help promote a heritage 'look' inthe downtown district and continues to recognize individual's homesof heritage or cultural value through the Pride Plaque Program.

Last year, an award called the 'Heritage Appreciation Award' wasestablished by the committee to recognize those individuals “fortaking the initiative and action to preserve our past”. Three recipients,Strawberry Threads, Rutledge's Jewellers and the Tin Mill havereceived this award. This year we will continue to award local areaHeritage Farms.

The Heritage Sign By-law Guidelines is used as a reference todetermine award recipients, and the boundaries include the entiretownship. Information about how to receive this award along withideas on improving building facades, windows and general landscapesin keeping with a heritage appearance, can be found in the HeritageUxbridge Sign Guidelines at the Township's office.

2011 will also see the committee involved with the “Downtownrevitalization”, project and those plans and policies that will guide thetownship with its development of the downtown core. Further, thecommittee continues to maintain a close watch on the PickeringAirport lands, and will endeavour to help protect any properties ofhistorical and cultural value found within that area.

Last year the community of Leaskdale and the Lucy MaudMontgomery Society saw themselves proud, as its originalPresbyterian church known mainly for its connection to Lucy Maud, received a Provincial Heritage designation. The Thomas Foster memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on ahill in the countryside of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahalinspired its structure, which is just outside of Agra, India. The roofsurfaces are copper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, traceryand all metal parts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windowsare the work of Yvonne Williams, and are of hand-painted, fired andleaded glass, the colour and designs are harmonious and aredistributed so as to flood the interior with soft, colourful light.The22k gold mosaics with also multi colors give elegance to thismagnificent building. The floors are of rich coloured terrazzo andmarble mosaics, wrought in symbolic designs. On entering, one crosses the River of Oaths on which floats waterlilies and lily pads. In the general design of the floor beneath thegreat dome, the motion, typifying life, radiates from the Greekletters “Alpha and Omega” which in turn flank the “Chi Rhomonogram in its early Byzantine form, the Laurel wreath of victoryover death encircles the centre motif. Above, the drum of the domeis pierced with 12 stained glass, leaded windows, that in the eastbeing in the form of a gold cross on a rich blue ground. Circling thelower part of the dome, above the great arches in gold lettering on afield of graded blue mosaic is the inscription…'Take this my body for it is done and I have gained a new life, glorious and eternal'

Survive a Fire in Your Home... Plan Your Escape Today!

Anyone who has lived through a fire will tell you what a terrifyingexperience it is. Unfortunately, many people who experience fire neverget a chance to tell their story - to warn others of the dangers of fire.

Your fire department wants you to be prepared if a fire strikes yourhome. Please take a few minutes with your family to make a fireescape plan by following the nine simple instructions listed below.Every household must have a fire escape plan and a working smokealarm to help ensure survival in a fire. Begin your plan by checkingyour smoke alarm to make sure that it is working. The smoke alarmwill wake you up if a fire occurs while you are asleep.

1. Draw a floor plan of your homeUse a grid to draw a floor plan of your home, following the exampleprovided as a guide. You should draw a floor plan for each floor ofyour home.

2. Include all possible emergency exitsDraw in all walls, doors, windows and stairs. This will show you andyour family all possible escape routes at a glance.

3. Include any important features that could help with yourescapeDoors and windows are escape exits from your home. Are there anyother features that could help you get out safely? Can you climb outa window onto the roof of a porch or garage? Is there a tree ortelevision antenna tower that can be safely reached from a window? These features can be extremely useful in an emergency, however youmust make sure that all escape routes are practical and usable.

4. Mark two escape routes from each room There is a main exit from every room. This will be the exit to use ifthere is no apparent danger. If you are unable to use the main exitbecause of smoke or fire, you must have an alternate exit. The secondexit is usually the window. Special consideration should be given toplanning escape routes from the bedrooms as most fires occur at rightwhen everyone is sleeping. This second exit must be practical and easyto use. Make sure that the occupant of that bedroom is able to use thesecond exit.

5. Remember - some people may need help to escape Decide in advance who will assist the very young, elderly or physicallychallenged members of your household. A few minutes of planningwill save valuable seconds in a real emergency.

6. Choose a place outside where everyone will meet Choose a meeting place that every one will remember. It is a good ideato choose a spot at the front of your home or close to your neighbour'shouse. Everyone must know to go directly to this meeting place sothey can be accounted for. No one should go back into a burningbuilding for any reason.

7. Call the fire department from a neighbour's home Once at the meeting place, someone can be sent to the neighbour'shome to call the fire department. Include the neighbour's name andthe fire department phone number (911) on your plan. Mark thestreet address of your home on your fire escape plan, Always keep theFire Departments number by your own phone in case a neighbourneeds to call.

8. Make sure everyone is familiar with the home escapeplan Go over the entire plan with everyone. Discuss primary and secondaryescape routes from each bedroom. Ensure that all children know theplan. Walk through the escape routes for each room with the entirefamily. Use this walk-through exercise to check your escape routes, making sure all exits are practical and easy to use. It is important that all windows will open and that no heavy furnitureblocks any escape route. If escape ladders or ropes are to be used, makesure that they area accessible and that the appropriate individual iscapable of using them.

9. Practice your escape plan After reviewing the floor plan with the members of your household, have an actual practice to ensure that everyone knows what to do.Practice your escape plan every six months. In a real fire, you mustreact without hesitation as your escape routes may be quickly blockedby smoke or flames. Your practice drills will ensure that everyoneknows what to do when fire strikes.

If you have any questions or require further information pleasecall the Uxbridge Fire Department at 905-852-3393Remember in the event of an EMERGENCY call 9-1-1

Road WatchWhat is Road Watch?A new community initiative designed to improve road safety bycreating greater awareness and giving residents an opportunity toparticipate in identifying and reporting dangerous and aggressivedriving in the Township of Uxbridge.

Why have Road Watch? To help reduce Motor Vehicle Collisions and potential injuries andfatalities in the Township of Uxbridge.

What is Aggressive Driving?Aggressive driving is defined as excessive speeding, tail- gating, failureto stop and any other unsafe driving that puts others at high risk forcollision or injury.

How does Road Watch work?Citizen Report Forms may be used any time you observe an act ofaggressive driving. Record as much information as you can about theparticular aggressive driving incident that you witnessed. Thisinformation will help the police in monitoring high risk areas in ourcommunity. To complete the report, include the license number, themake and colour of the vehicle, the location (as exact as possible) andthe nature of the incident. When you send in the report, it isimportant that you sign it. This helps safeguard the system againstabuse. Be assured that your personal information is for statistical useonly and is held in the strictest of confidence. Drivers reported willreceive a letter from the police, describing the unsafe or aggressivedriving incident that was witnessed. If a driver is reported more thanonce, the police will make personal contact with that individualregarding the reported problems in person or by telephone. Subsequent offenses may result in enforcement action by the policedepending on the severity of the incident. Remember, this is your

opportunity to make our roads safer - the same roads you useeveryday. Citizen Report Forms may be picked up at any of the following dropbox sites:
