Mayor’s Message

The “Trail Capital of Canada” signs are now up at all road entrances to our community and we as citizens of Uxbridge Township need to proactively celebrate this much deserved designation and get out and explore our wonderful trail system, inviting friends and neighbours to join us.

The Master Plan for the Kennedy House property has been completed and widely advertised and distributed including a special article in the Township’s July newsletter circulated with the Times Journal. After much discussion and debate the decision has been made to raise all the building on the site to give us a clean slate for future long term development of the site and to remove any vulnerability for ongoing operational and maintenance costs. The demolition contract will be awarded in August and site cleared by the end of September

We still plan to seek out a new name for Kennedy House and we will be looking to our community for ideas and suggestions so please keep this in mind and note down any ideas you may come up with.

There are many events and activities scheduled for people of all ages throughout the Township and we urge you to read the recreational guide thoroughly, select those that interest you and get involved.

Mayor Bob Shepherd

Our programs are based upon a cost recovery basis and we need a minimum number of participants registered before a program can go on. A full credit will be provided if the Recreation Department is responsible for program cancellations or changes. The Town of Uxbridge reserves the right to cancel or revise any program in accordance with participant requirements.

FOR EVERYONE’S HEALTH & SAFETYIf a participant has a communicable disease (e.g. Lice, Chicken Pox, etc.) or a current public health concern we would ask that the participant not attend leisure programs, swimming lessons or public swimming. Participants are welcome to return to the leisure program/aquatic lesson when they are healthy. Parents should be aware that the Child & Family Service Act requires that any suspicion of child abuse be reported immediately to the Children’s Aid Society.

REFUNDS OR TRANSFERSa. A full refund is available if the program you choose is

cancelled. Request for refund will not be accepted after the first lesson unless accompanied by a medical certificate. We regret participants receive no refund if the cancellation affects minimum class numbers or the request is past the fourth lesson.

b. Refund/credit requests must be submitted in writing. The effective date will be the date the Parks, Recreation and Culture department receives written notification. Verbal notification will not be accepted. Non-attendance does not constitute notice of withdrawal. An administrative fee of $15 will be deducted regardless of refund or credit issued. All refunds/credits will be “prorated” whether classes are attended or not. Seven days notice is required. Any classes missed may not be made up at another class time or session. The Music Hall has become the cultural centre of Uxbridge Township. Some of the varied forms of entertainment presented in the unique, beautiful building include excellent theatre groups, inspirational concerts, dance recitals plus Books & Author’s Nights.

Uxbridge Musical Scholarship FundThe Fund was established in 1998 with the intention of offering Scholarships to students progressing to post-secondary education and who will be pursuing Musical Studies as their main focus. Uxbridge winners are already studying as far away as British Colombia and Western

Ontario. The Fund was started when a few members of the local musical scene felt there was a need both to support young musicians and to provide some financial help. Candidates are required to be living or studying within the Township of Uxbridge boundaries and must be under the age of 25. Financial Support Continues to be generously given by local service clubs while local students and bands raise money by presenting concerts as well.

Details of the Fund itself can be obtained by contacting Anthony Holt at (905) 852-5970 or Lesley Joosten (905) 852-3243.

Here are a few of the outstanding entertainment groups that regularly appear at the Music Hall.

UXBRIDGE HERITAGE

T he T homas Foster MemorialThe Foster Memorial is located: 4 km north of Uxbridge on Durham 1 (Conc. 7) on the east side of the road. 9449 Regional Rd # 1, Uxbridge

The Thomas Foster memorial was built for $250,000 in 1936 on a hill in the countryside of Uxbridge Township. The Taj Mahal inspired its structure (Agra, India). The roof surfaces are copper tile, and the entrance doors, windows, tracery and all metal parts are bronze. The beautiful stained glass windows are the work of Yvonne Williams, and are of hand-painted, fired and leaded glass, the colour and designs are harmonious and are distributed so as to flood the interior with soft, colourful light. The 22kgold mosaics with also multi colors give elegance to this magnificent building. The floors are of rich coloured terrazzo and marble mosaics, wrought in symbolic designs. On entering, one crosses the River of Oaths on which floats water lilies and lily pads. In the general design of the floor beneath the great dome, the motion, typifying life, radiates from the Greek letters “Alpha and Omega” which in turn flank the “Chi Rho monogram in its early Byzantine form, the Laurel wreath of victory over death encircles the centre motif. Above, the drum of the dome is pierced with 12 stained glass, leaded windows, that in the east being in the form of a gold cross on a rich blue ground. Circling the lower part of the dome, above the great arches in gold lettering on a field of graded blue mosaic is the inscription...

Lucy Maud Montgomery at at Home in Leaskdale: a Centennial Celebration 2011

Join the Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario in 2010 and 2011 for our cultural events at the National Historic Leaskdale Manse and Church.

From 1911 to 1926, Montgomery wrote 11 books at the Manse including her sequels to Anne and her poetry book. From educational and cultural tours and programs to entertaining and enjoyable events, we have it all. Both sites are run by The Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario. All profits from all events go towards the restoration of both sites. A huge restoration project has begun on the interior of the Manse. The money came from a partnership of Parks Canada, Township of Uxbridge and the LMMSO. If you haven’t visited this National historic site, arrange a tour. The back section of the Manse will be restored with a partnership with the Trillium Foundation.

The historic church is beautiful. The interior is very much like it was for Maud’s husband, Reverend Ewen Macdonald’s sermons each Sunday.

Our displays and presentations give the details and background of Lucy Maud’s writing in Leaskdale and history of this hamlet.

**Tours are given throughout the summer Wednesday to Sunday or anytime of the year by appointment. Why not arrange a tour for friends and family?

Heritage Uxbridge

Heritage Uxbridge is a committee commissioned by the Uxbridge Council to act as an advocate for the preservation and conservation of heritage properties in the township.

The committee is made up of dedicated volunteers who carry out a number of on-going responsibilities throughout the year, working with the community and the township members assisting with and advising in matters related to

heritage and cultural aspects. In past years, the committee has developed and organized guided tours, and published

articles and maps that help promote Uxbridge’s cultural heritage. Further, the committee continues to maintain a close watch on the Pickering Airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect the Altona Inn and any properties of historica value found within that area. It also produced a Heritage District Sign Bi-law to help promote a heritage “look” in the downtown district and continues to recognise individual’s homes of heritage or cultural value through the Plaque Program.

This year an award called the “Heritage Appreciation Award”, has been established by the committee to recognize those individuals “for taking the initiative and action to preserve our past”. Three recipients, Strawberry Threads, Rutledge’s Jewellers and the Tin Mill have received this award This year we

will be awarding Heritage Farms.

The Heritage Sign By-law Guidelines is used as a reference to determine award recipients, and the boundaries include the entire township. Information about how to receive this award along with ideas on improving building facades, windows and general landscapes in keeping with a heritage appearance, can be found in the Heritage Uxbridge Sign Guidelines at the Township’s office.

2010 will also see the committee involved with the “Downtown revitalization”, project and those plans and policies that will guide the township with its development of the downtown core. Further, the committee continues to maintain a close watch on the Pickering Airport lands, and will endeavour to help protect any properties of historical and cultural value found within that area.

This year the community of Leaskdale and the Lucy Maud Montgomery foundation will see themselves proud, as its original Presbyterian church known mainly for its connection to Lucy Maud, has received a Provincial Heritage designation.

If you would like more information about this committee or have any questions about Heritage Uxbridge heritage, please contact Gail Pimm at [email protected].

UXBRIDGE FIRE DEPARTMENT

A Message from T he Uxbridge Fire Department

More fires start in the kitchen than anywhere else in the home – but that doesn’t mean you have to get rid of your stove or eat out all the time. There’s a lot you can do to help fireproof your kitchen and reduce the chance of a fire starting from cooking.

Both gas and electric stoves can cause fires, as toasters ovens, and any electrical appliance that can overheat. Be sure to follow the instructions when using your appliances

Most kitchen fires are preventable if these fire safety tips are followed.

Stay in the kitchen when cooking• Never leave cooking unattended. Oil or fat can ignite• Always turn the oven and burners off when you are

finished cooking• Always unplug electrical appliances when not in use• Keep children a safe distance from cooking

Stay Alert• Cooking requires you to be rested and alert• Avoid cooking when under the influence of alcohol or

medication

Wear short or close-fitting sleeves• Avoid loose sleeves that may contact burners and catch fire• Avoid storing items on or above your stove

Turn pot handles in• Prevent burns and stove-top fires by turning pot handles

towards the back of the stove when cooking• When ever possible use rear burners. Pot handles that

stick out can be easily bumped or grabbed by a small child

Clean cooking surfaces• Keep appliance surfaces free of spills and grease that

may catch fire

Keep combustible items clear of stove• Keep curtains, dish towels, plastic containers and pot

holders away from hot surfaces

Operate Microwaves safely• Always use pot holders or oven mitts to remove food from

microwaves

• Remove lids carefully to avoid steam burns

Don’t overload electrical outlets• Avoid overloading electrical outlets with too many kitchen

appliances• Carefully examine cords and discard any that are frayed,

cracked or damaged

Working smoke alarms save lives• Purchase and install working smoke alarms. Specialized

alarms are available for kitchen areas• Test smoke alarms monthly and for battery operated

smoke alarms replace batteries at least once a year

What to do if you have a kitchen fire?Put a lid on it• To extinguish a grease fire, use a potholder or over mitts

and slide a lid or a cookie sheet over the flames then turn the heat source off

• If the flames do not go out, immediately leave your home and call the fire department

Oven and Microwave fires• If a fire starts in your oven, close the oven door and turn

off the heat source• For a microwave fire, keep the door closed and turn off

the microwave• Remember, if the fire does not go out, leave your home

and call the fire department

Use portable fire extinguishers• Portable fire extinguishers can be effective in fighting small

contained fires• Use the appropriate

extinguisher and ensure that you are trained in its use

If you have any questions or require further information please call the Uxbridge Fire Department at 905-852-3393

Sunday morning at West Shore is a quiet day,You get out of bed and think of a wayTo put in the time of day.Church service is on the fourth fl oor, you know,You get a good welcome if you decide to go.Or you can sit in your room and read for a whileNo time to look at the walls and go senile.Monday morning starts early at 6:45,That’s when the day starts to come alive.I hear a knock on my door and wonder who’s thereWell of course it’s the lady from Community Care,She says, “Ross, get out of your bed,It’s time to shower and wash your head.”I get all freshed up and off I goTo the fi rst fl oor; its breakfast time, you know.I look out the window and the lake is quiet,But that’s where the motorboats have a riot.Along comes a waitress with a smile to say,“Hi Ross, what will you have today?”I have cereal and egg, toast and jam,That’s when I realize how full I am.I go back upstairs to room 221 where I reside. The view faces west where I look outside.I pick up a book, the fi rst one I see. It’s one I received from Memorial Library.I read for a while and got the hunch,It was nearly time to go for lunch.I can have soup and sandwich and maybe some custard,Or maybe a nice hotdog with relish or mustard. The day goes by and it’s time for supper:Five choices you can choose from as you wish,Just sit down to your favourite dish.Wednesday afternoon at the stroke of three,Its bingo time and we sit with glee.We yell out “Bingo” when they say B3.Once a month on fl oor three we celebrateWe hear music and songs and have birthday cake.We sing happy birthday to everyone there,Then wander off to go elsewhere.Every evening it’s bid euchre from seven ‘til nine,What a wonderful way to put in some time.On the fi rst week of April we plant fl ower seeds galore,Later in May we plant them outdoors.Well that’s how I spend my time at West Shore.I stop and wonder how I could ask for much more.
