Dear UUMC Family and Friends –

Happy New Year and welcome back to UUMC in 2014! We have good work to do in this new

I extend my gratitude to those of you who responded to my pre-Christmas pastoral alert regarding

engagements from people with questions. I appreciate the overall tone of care and respect, which

SISTERS SISTERS INVITES THE BROTHERS OF THE CHURCH TO OUR NEXT MEETING!

Sisters book discussion group is meeting Tuesday, January 28th to discuss Dan Brown’s book, Inferno. We think the

gentlemen of the church will enjoy this thriller and look forward to your input. We meet at 7:30, have devotions,

discuss the book and then have refreshments. We will be meeting at the home of Carol Pukli (714-731-0258). For

those of us in south Irvine who wish to carpool we will meet in the church parking lot and plan to leave at 7pm. Let

me know if you want to carpool ([email protected]) so I can be sure we have enough cars.

This book is an exciting thriller and should lead to a great discussion. People magazine says; “ The Indiana Jones of

intellectuals, Robert Landon, rides again…Revelations connecting faith and science…add dimension to this page-

turner’s thrills.” And the Chicago Tribune writes, “a thundering, tantalizing, extremely smart, fun ride. Brown

doesn’t slow down his tremendously powerful narrative engine despite transmitting several doctorates’ worth of

fascinating history…Brain candy of the highest quality.”

Please join us!

UUMC’s Office Volunteers: Ready, Willing and Able

If the church is the people, as the old song says, UUMC’s office

volunteers are our ambassadors, presenting our best face to visitors

and callers alike. Working from 9 to 5, Monday through Thursday,

and from 9 to 12 noon on Friday, volunteers handle a multitude of

tasks, from folding bulletins to logging church attendance to helping

needy folks who come to our door.

Working in two to three hour shifts, UUMC’s 24 volunteers have

logged 1,384 hours this past year. Front office volunteers are trained

to be active listeners, answering questions, providing information

and generally assisting all who contact the church. The pace

can be leisurely or harried. Our volunteers are ready for anything.

At the group’s holiday celebration on Dec. 16, volunteer coordinator Lois Vaught thanked them all for their dedication,

singling out Steve Georgi with a special award for perfect attendance. After a short training session, including a review of

office policy, the group sat down to a hearty luncheon, featuring holiday décor by Pastor Paige and home-baked treats by Lois.

After lunch the three tables of volunteers divided into teams to play “Sing that holiday tune” and “Can you speak on any

subject for 90 seconds?” leading to laughter all around.

Thanks to those faithful volunteers who keep the office going, providing invaluable assistance to Jane Bernard, our office

manager, and to us all. Current members of the corps are Barbara Albers, Ruth Bales, Mickey Chase, Joy Corkery, Thelma

Davis, Roxane Fowler, Steve Georgi, Kathy Hartman, Glenda Ison, Pat Kline, Bob Knight, Betsy Leth, Jack Lucas, Diane

Masenten, Jim Moyer, Julie Norris, Sharren Smith and Doris Ringbloom. New volunteers are always welcome. Contact Lois

Vaught for more information.

OKLAHOMA MISSION TEAM

Meeting: Sunday, Jan. 26, 11:00 am Educ. Bldg. Room D

Connecting with God***Growing in Faith***Serving with Love

During the week of May 11 – 17, 2014, UUMC will be sending a mission team to the Oklahoma City area. We

will be helping with the rebuilding of homes damaged or destroyed by tornadoes. During this first meeting we

will be discussing what information we have concerning the trip. For team members we are looking for anyone

with the desire to work hard, learn new skills, be a good listener, and be part of an exceptional mission team.

Again this year we are taking our own cooks, so do not be bashful – volunteer! Come to the meeting and

decide for yourself if you are being called to go on a mission trip.

Thank You from Families Forward

A great big THANK YOU from Families Forward for the thirty

(30) families who were adopted this year for Christmas. I know it

makes such a difference in their lives, and I hope for you. Your

generosity also for Thanksgiving with food and checks was well

received. I’m so proud that UUMC has been a big supporter of

Families Forward, previously Irvine Temporary Housing, since the

beginning over 25 years ago.
