Summary

Incumbents in the Locksmith series ensure the security of campus buildings and equipment by performing locksmith services for University departments, including installing, maintaining, and repairing access controls, locks, key systems, and door hardware.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Locksmith Senior is distinguished from the Locksmith Journeyman in that incumbents in the Senior level work with less supervision and possess the knowledge and experience to perform more complex tasks, including providing estimates, overseeing record keeping, and performing administrative duties in the Foreman’s absence.

Typical Functions

1. Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of locks and locking mechanisms on campus to conform with current federal, state, and campus safety and security regulations.

2. Coordinates and schedules work to ensure timely completion and quality standards. 3. Follows through with customers to ensure that their needs were met.4. Coordinates with campus police and the Fire Marshall concerning security and fire code

equipment.5. Advises Campus Planning and other University entities on decisions concerning keying and

security of new construction and remodels.6. Prepares labor and materials estimates for repairs, renovations, and new buildings. 7. Estimates, orders, and maintains inventory for key, lock and other exit devices.8. Maintains and oversees all records for the lock-shop including floor plans, access controls, and

master key systems, ensures accurate and current information.9. Maintains, repairs, and changes the combinations of on-campus safes.10. Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems with locks and electronic key card systems to find

solutions and resolve problems.

11. Cuts, duplicates, programs and issues keys or proximity cards as requested by campus departments and in coordination with a supervisor and University police.

12. Performs administrative responsibilities in the Foreman’s absence. 13. Interprets keying guidelines; uses appropriate discretion and special knowledge of lock systems

to preserve the integrity of the University’s master key system while meeting customer requests.

14. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.15. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.16. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Advanced knowledge of keys, keyways, key manufacturers, key duplication machines, and key duplication techniques.

2. Advanced knowledge of function, grades, and the methods of installation of locking hardware.3. Ability to maintain records.4. Skilled in the use of hand and power tools common to trade.5. Ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install, and repair locks and hardware.6. Knowledge of key codes and mater keying techniques.7. Comprehensive knowledge of all current Federal, State, and campus security regulations.8. Knowledge of safes, safe locks, and safe maintenance techniques.9. Skilled in troubleshooting and repairing electronic key card systems.10. Ability to accurately estimate projects and purchase materials.11. Exceptional customer service skills.12. Skilled with mathematical computations.13. Basic computer skills.14. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers.15. Ability to participate in post-employment training and education to stay current with trade.

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of directly related work experience in locksmithing is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

The position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting average-weight objects (up to 25 lbs.). Employees must adhere to safety precautions.
