VCS Tank Crew Recognized for Continuous Focus on SafetyFourteen Virginia-Class submarine (VCS) shipbuilders were recently recognized for their continuous focus on safety. The crew works on VCS ballast tanks and plays a major role in the completion of the electrical installations inside the tanks.

“This crew takes safety very seriously,” said Foreman Rodney Huffman. “They are quick to question things that don’t appear safe and they come to me with any safety concerns they have regarding their work environment.”

The crew has been accident-free for more than 760 days.

“We stretch each morning to loosen up our muscles before beginning work, and also hold discussions on how we can continue to remain safe,” said Welder Elston Copeland (X31).

Deck Electrician Jay Blunt Jr. (X31) believes that looking out for each other has also been key to the crew’s success. “We care about each other and each other’s wellbeing,” he said. “If we see something unsafe, we report it. We don’t want anyone to get hurt from something that

could have been prevented if someone would have just spoken up.”

Huffman added, “I’m extremely proud of my crew for achieving this milestone. As a crew, we will continue to remain safe each day and return home to our families the same way we came into work.”

Veterans Day is Tuesday, Nov. 11. Read the question and answer session below featuring Master Shipbuilder and Army Veteran Robert Blount (X31).

What is your job at NNS? I’m an X31 foreman working on USS Abraham Lincoln’s (CVN 72) refueling and complex overhaul. I’ve worked at NNS for 47 years.

When did you join the Army? I was drafted in 1968.

What were your job responsibilities in the Army? I was in field artillery, guarding missiles and performing maintenance on them.

What was the most exciting place you traveled? I was stationed in Athens, Greece for 13 months. While I was there, I had a chance to travel around and do a lot of sight-seeing. One of my favorite things about Greece was the food and the different ways it was prepared.

Recall one of your fondest memories while you served. It was exciting to be a young man from North Carolina from a small town. When I left home, it taught me to grow up fast or be left behind. Integration had not fully taken place in schools yet, so it introduced me to it fully and taught me that we all need each other in order to survive.

Why do you think it’s important to recognize Veterans? It’s important to recognize the men and women who have been away from their families to fight for our freedom. When I was in the service, vets didn’t get the recognition they deserved. When I came home, it seemed like my family was the only ones who were glad to have me home.

On Saturday, Nov. 22, Newport News Shipbuilding will lay the keel for the 14th Virginia-class submarine, Washington (SSN 787). Ship’s Sponsor Elisabeth Mabus, daughter of Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, will have her initials welded onto a metal plate during the ceremony, in keeping with U.S. Navy tradition. Though construction began in 2011, the keel laying marks the first official construction milestone for the submarine.

Attendance to the event will be limited to a small number of guests, however, a live webcast of the ceremony will be available beginning at 4 p.m. at www.huntingtoningalls.com/ssn787.

“Phishing” is any attempt to acquire sensitive information including usernames, date-of-birth, passwords, account numbers and sometimes money by posing as a trustworthy source, such as a bank, financial institution or credit card company. This form of attempting to get sensitive information may be electronic communications (email) and may also include unsolicited phone calls.

Due to recent phone scams and harassment calls that some shipbuilders have reported receiving at their homes, NNS would like to remind its employees to never give out personal information to anyone – at work or at home. According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, government agencies will NEVER contact citizens by phone, email or text, to ask you to provide personal information. Watch a 60-second public service announcement video published by the Department of the Treasury warning citizens about these types of calls.

Visit www.stopfraud.gov for more information.

Shipbuilders who receive a call like this at work should contact the Security Department (O15).

HII HOSTS U.S. NUCLEAR INFRASTRUCTURE COUNCIL AT NNSHuntington Ingalls Industries showcased its nuclear capabilities to a U.S. Nuclear Infrastructure Council delegation during a tour of Newport News Shipbuilding on Nov. 6. HII is a member of the NIC, a Washington, D.C.-based business consortium that advocates for new nuclear energy initiatives in the United States and engagement of the American supply chain globally. NNS Vice President of Energy Programs Pete Diakun led the shipyard tour, which included stops at Newport News’ steel production facility and foundry and a submarine construction facility. The group also learned about the shipyard’s modeling and simulation, supply chain management, and nuclear energy efforts. Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for more information.
