It took me quite a while to get my head around exhibiting, but I think it

was worth the time and effort. The concept of exhibiting is decep-

tively simple: you take some stuff, and make a display. Afterwards, some judges check it over, and if you’re good enough you get an award.

Then I discovered there were rules. That’s when things began to get com-plicated.

At first the rules seemed a bit silly to me. I heard horror story after horror story about how some incredible ex-hibit just didn’t get the right points be-cause it wasn’t philatelic or technical enough. Then I found out that judges have to go through their own period of training.

To be honest, it seemed a bit like a bunch of stuffy old-timers had got to-gether and figured out a way to resist change, and stack the deck in favour of their own biases. I figured exhibiting was supposed to be fun, and too many rules seemed to be a bit of a buzz-kill.

But, when I gave the matter a bit more thought, it all sort of made some sense.

If an exhibitor’s goal is to get bet-ter, then judging is really a form of constructive criticism. By trying, and paying attention to comments and suggestions, an exhibit can be im-proved. In that case, it is only fair to the exhibitor that the judges are all following the same rules. It’s like playing a sport, if the referee’s don’t have a consistent approach to follow-ing the rules, chaos is the natural re-sult.

Similarly, expecting an exhibitor to work their way up through several tiers of exhibits ensures both success and quality at the top levels.

Again, just as in sports where a player starts out as a novice, works up to the senior levels, and eventu-ally gets to go to the top levels. You don’t get to represent your country at the Olympics until you qualify at the national level.

At every step of the progress the athlete gets guidance and criticism, and a set of rules to follow.

I know exhibiting stamps isn’t an athletic endeavour, but I think the analogy holds true.

One difference, of course, is that stamp collecting is emotional, and be-cause it has an artistic component, at least some of that judging is going to be a bit subjective.

I suspect that is where things get a bit messy.

I also suspect that some prospective exhibitors get scared away by the rules, and by a culture which sees ex-hibitors often complain bitterly when they don’t get what they want. I guess that would be the equivalent of un-sportsmanlike conduct.

Is exhibiting perfect? I don’t think so. But over my time at Canadian Stamp News I have seen some changes, more and more exhibits are now focusing on postal history, and single frame exhib-its offer a nice entry area for the nov-ice.

If you haven’t exhibited before, I en-courage you to give it some thought.

There are plenty of resources, fellow collectors, experienced exhibitors, and even judges are often more than will-ing to offer good advice.

The International Society of World-wide Stamp Collectors even has a free web page that takes much of the mys-tery out of exhibiting. It can be found at http://www.iswsc.org/exhibit.shtml.

Check it out, you may just become inspired. W

The battle, which made Andrew Jackson famous, was actually a series of engagements which ended on Jan. 8, 1815. The battle was actually held after the war was ended by the Treaty of Ghent, on Dec. 24, 1814.

The stamp is based on a painting by Greg Harlin, showing Jackson on horseback, leading his troops. The battle ended in an American victory, and was earlier commemorated on a 1965 U.S. postage stamp.

A stamp and sticker combination will be released in April, as part of National Card and Letter Writing Month.

The forever-rate stamp, with the phrase From Me to You in four

colours, will be produced in panes of 12 stamps. The pane will also include 11 labels with messages such as Hello, Thank You, and Get Well Soon, which can presumably be used in a decora-tive manner, or as letter seals.

Four harvest stamps have artwork with a distinct market feel.

The forever-rate stamps, designed by Michael Doret, show retro-style images of watermelons, sweet corn, cantaloupes, and tomatoes; all crops harvested during the summer months.

The 100th anniversary of the United States Coast Guard will be marked with a stamp showing the famous cut-

ter USCGC Eagle, and an MH0-65 Dol-phin helicopter.

The Eagle, a three-mast sailing ship, is used as a training vessel for future Coast Guard officers and conducts summer training cruises with cadets from the United States Coast Guard Academy.

The Dolphin helicopter is in current service for air-sea rescue.

The theme of the 2012 waves of colour definitive stamps will be picked up for two “patriotic wave” high value definitives.

The $1 and $2 stamps will have red and blue wave forms, reminiscent of a flag, on a white background. They are designed by Michael Dayer, who also designed the earlier definitives.

Other stamps planned, but not re-vealed, include two Civil War stamps, one for the Battle of Five Forks and the other for Lee’s surrender at Ap-pomattox; two music icon stamps, legends of Hollywood, Black heritage, three Vietnam Medal of Honor recipi-ents, and a stamp to commemorate the New York 2016 World Stamp Show. In an effort to promote e-commerce parcel delivery, the fastest growing

area of modern postal services, the Uni-versal Postal Union (UPU) has ap-proved specifications for a new service covering items up to 30 kilograms.

The service, which includes track and trace options, is expected to expe-dite international delivery of parcels, with a standard of five business days from the moment it arrives in its in-tended country. Starting in 2016 the service, which is optional, will provide pre-advice data of package contents to customs authorities in order to improve clearance of items. It also has a vali-dated merchandise return component,

making it easier to return unwanted goods to e-tailers.

The UPU developed the service in re-cord time, after passing a resolution in April to expedite e-commerce. Online sales worldwide are expected to reach $1.5 trillion US by the end of this year.

“E-commerce is changing the way we do business,” said Brazil’s Ventuyl Barbossa, vice-chairman of the UPU’s postal operations council. “Posts must adapt to the market and provide both e-tailers and customers the services they want.”

Globally, postal services handled more than 6.7 billion parcels for domes-tic delivery in 2013, up 3.7 per cent over

the year before. International parcels represented about 300 million, a five per cent increase.

Canada Post has reported an increase in parcel revenue, up 11.3 per cent to $353 million in the second quarter of this year, compared to 2013.

Created in 1874, the UPU, based in Switzerland, is the primary forum for co-operation between governments and postal authorities worldwide. In addi-tion to maintaining a universal network for products and services, it establishes rules for mail exchanges among its members and makes recommendations to stimulate mail volume growth and improve the quality of service. lieve it or not, producers of junk mail, referred to as admail by Canada Post, or direct mail in the advertising busi-ness, share your love of stamps. In an age when we are carefully screening our mail, some marketers have de-cided that paying for actual stamps, rather than using permit mailing, actu-ally helps their message get past the mailbox and into your house.

ChriSTmaS iCONS ON STamPSYou’d have to have spent the past

half century in a cave to have not heard of the famous television special Ru-dolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. This year, the United States Postal Service is

marking the 50th anniversary of the special with four stamps, each based on a still picture from the movie. Fea-tured characters are Rudolph, Hermey, the Bumble, and, of course, Santa.

STamPS TeLL a STOrYCollectors are always talking about

the educational value of stamps. Well British writer Chris West proves that with two books: A History of Britain in Thirty-Six Postage Stamps, and A His-tory of America in Thirty-Six Postage Stamps. Both books use stamps to tell history. A stamp collector himself, West describes each stamp as “a time-travel machine that could whisk me back to another era.” Makes you wonder what our stamps will say about us to future generations.

The machine, which was an early mechanical com-puter, was used, among other things, to decode German Enigma messages. Much of the work constructing the “Bombe” was done under the guise of the postal department, which oper-ated telephone and telegraph equip-ment. A second label honours Turing himself.

The stamp will be prominently displayed in the William H. Gross Stamp Gallery for three years, starting next April. It will be the longest time the stamp has been on public display in its history. While we commend the owner for giving the world a chance to see this philatelic wonder, we have to think, he’s probably also saving a tonne of money in setting up a high-tech security system.

Canadian comic book su-perheroes have enjoyed a

resurgence in popularity in re-cent years, with reprints of their stories, a Captain Canuck web series, and continuing promises of him in an action film.

Featured on one of five commemoratives 19 years ago, the red-and-white costumed enemy of bad guys across the country has had a loyal follow-ing since the first story was published in 1975.

But despite continuing en-thusiasm, rebirths with two dif-ferent characters donning his persona, plus new fighting lo-cales, a total of only 15 different Captain Canuck comic books have rolled off the presses.

Since comic books’ introduc-tion in Japan in the 1700s and Europe in the 1830s, titles, char-acters, writers and artists have come and gone regularly. Com-petition rose to new heights, however, after Superman leapt a tall building in a single bound more than 76 years ago.

Considered the one who in-fluenced other crime-fighting larger-than-life characters, the Man of Steel has undergone re-incarnations, via new-style art-work, on television with both actors and animated depictions, plus in documentaries and sev-eral movies. He was even killed

off, only to be resurrected in sort of a “can’t keep a good guy down” scenario, which natu-rally generated super sales of subsequent issues.

In an Oct. 9 Toronto Star arti-cle, Fadi Hakim, president of Captain Canuck Inc., ventured to writer Sean Tepper that a live action TV series will inevitably feature a Canadian superhero, “absolutely ... there’s no doubt about it.”

Hakim predicted that con-tinuing interest in Captain Canuck, plus other Canadian superhero characters, will result in a live-action series within five years.

Captain Canuck has starred five times in webisodes: series

episodes distributed via the World Wide Web instead of on television.

It garnered more than 60,000 views on YouTube since its launch on July 1, 2013 with the appropriately titled inaugural episode “Happy Canada Day,” the Star reported.

“We have a rich history as far as Canadian superheroes are concerned,” producer Hakim was quoted saying. “People love superheroes, but they’ve come to the forefront because of technology.”

Comic book technology was in its infancy in the late 1930s when Superman leapt into ac-tion after U.S.-based DC Com-ics launched the character cre-ated by Toronto-born teenaged artist Joe Shuster and his Cleve-land schoolmate-writer Jerry Siegel in the Ohio city.

The first Action Comics, with a cover that shows Superman hoisting a car over his shoul-ders as easily as the average mortal might prepare to toss a small trash can, was released in early 1938.

Something about the caped man from Krypton, an ex-ploded planet whose survivors took on superhuman qualities except when exposed to chunks of their home world, called kryptonite, resonated with fans eager to spare a dime to buy his bigger-than life animated tales.

Action Comics sales were brisk and a dedicated Super-man title appeared in June 1939. But after the Second World War erupted that September, comics were branded non-essential im-ports in this country.

“They all disappeared from newsstands in Canada when the December 1940 War Ex-change Conservation Act stopped these ‘non-essential’ publications,” Canada Post noted.

The decision gave rise to a short-lived replacement indus-try.

Instead of full-colour comic books, black-and-white “Cana-dian Whites” with colourful covers were launched, featur-ing casts of new characters. Some were obviously based on their banished American coun-terparts.

Two Canadian replacements, Johnny Canuck and Nelvana of the Northern Lights, were each featured on a stamp issued 19 years ago.

Despite his lack of super-powers, Johnny Canuck was “strong, brave and had a good right hook – and he was created almost by accident!” Canada Post noted.

John Ezrin, of Bell Features in Toronto, saw a teenager checking out comic books at a newsstand, which were com-mon on sidewalks at the time.

Not impressed with the art-work, Leo Bachle accepted Ez-rin’s pitch to produce a new character by the next morning, for the company’s lineup of comic book titles.

The character ’s name had been used in cartoons drawn

Captain Canuck is shown on one of five 1995 commemoratives featuring comic book superheroes.

richard Comely is the co-creator of Captain Canuck, who debuted in 1975, appearing sporadically over the past 39 years.

between 1869 and the early 20th century to represent a type of “everyman” Canadian. He was often shown wearing a lumberjack’s outfit.

Bachle (1926-2003) kept his promise and Johnny Canuck appeared in the February 1941 edition of Bell’s Dime Comics, confronting none other than Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.

According to Wikipedia, the teenager was soon producing artwork for other Bell charac-ters, including Wild Bill, The Invisible Commando, Chip Pipher, Southpaw, Super Sub, and The Brain.

Although company sales took off so well that more young artists were hired by Bell, Johnny Canuck proved to be a great morale-booster dur-ing the war and remains Bach-le’s top creation.

His hero served on the front lines during the war as an RCAF officer and secret agent, who worked with partisans and guerrillas.

Bachle retired his pens and pencils after the war and changed his name to Les Barker before touring around the globe as a successful comedian.

Sadly, when comic book im-port restrictions were lifted fol-lowing the war, Johnny Canuck, Nelvana of the Northern Lights and other Canadian titles were unable to compete with the glossier, colourful and better-known American superhero ti-tles.

Canada Post wrote that Nel-vana was conceived by Franz Johnston, a member of the famed Group of Seven artists, who returned from a painting expedition to the Arctic with the legendary story of a woman born to a mortal mother and the northern god Koliak, King of the Northern Lights.

Mainly a landscape painter, Adrian Dingle (1911-74) created Nelvana of the Northern Lights as Canada’s first national su-perhero and one of the rare

women in that comic book role, four months before the later more famous Wonder Woman debuted south of the border.

“Dingle modified the concept so that Nelvana could fly, travel-ing at the speed of light along a ray of the Northern Lights,” the post office literature notes. Like Johnny Canuck, the Inuit super-hero tackled Axis agents plus super-villains and, on one occa-sion, “swarms of savage, starved Manchurian wolves.”

Nelvana, who debuted in 1941, was grounded in 1947.

The artist returned to painting after the Canadian comic book industry failed to ward off the return of American rival titles.

But Nelvana has survived in other forms.

Comic book historians Hope Nicholson and Rachel Richey reprinted the original stories last year.

The Canadian superhero team Alpha Flight, introduced by Marvel Comics in a 1979 X-Men issue , includes superhero-ine Snowbird, a demi-goddess whose mother is Nelvana.

Captain Canuck, the brain-child of cartoonist Ron Leish-man and artist-writer Richard Comely, was the first Canadian comic book hero since the in-dustry that blossomed during the war faded away by the late 1940s.

Wearing a trademark red-and-white costume and stand-ing with hands planted firmly

on his hips in a typical defender pose on the cover of the “First Fantastic Issue” of July 1975, the muscular crime-fighter was standing in front of a large Ca-nadian Maple Leaf flag.

Self-published by Comely Comix in Winnipeg, Captain Canuck’s alter-ego was futuris-tic secret agent Tom Evans, whose superpowers came from time spent with extraterrestri-als, as the story goes.

Priced at 35 cents each, the 200,000 first-edition copies fi-nanced with borrowed money sold well and impressed read-ers with higher-quality glossy paper and more pages, com-pared with American comics, which had rougher texture and sold for 25 cents.

Halted in 1976, publication was resumed three years later in Calgary by CKR Produc-tions, with 11 more issues pro-duced by early 1981. Most of the artwork was provided by George Freeman, after Comely began focusing on writing and lettering, Wikipedia notes.

The second version of the character, in the 1993 Captain Canuck: Reborn, featured a new alter-ego, Darren Oak, who bat-tled a global conspiracy for four issues, plus as a short-lived newspaper comic strip. George Freeman, an early employee, took over after Comely left CKR.

In 1997, Captain Canuck ap-peared on the cover of Time magazine.

Again under Comely’s con-trol, the character’s third alter-ego, RCMP Const. David Sem-ple, tackled a present-day biker gang in issues produced from 2004 until August 2007.

Mind’s Eye Entertainment, a Regina-based television and film production company, an-nounced plans in 2011 for a Captain Canuck feature film, then announced having en-gaged a screenwriter the fol-lowing year, after which several writers contributed scripts, Wikipedia notes.

Comely, who attends comic book shows and has marketed some original artwork plus dwindling stocks of early edi-tions, launched a new title, Star Rider and the Peace Machine, af-ter leaving CKR, using it to showcase his belief in a global conspiracy between Soviet and Western businesses.

He also produced the Captain Canuck: Legacy series between 2006 and 2011, in limited edi-tions. Hardcover reprints of the

series have also been published in recent years.

The five-episode animated web series was launched last year by Captain Canuck Inc. and Smiley Guy Studios.

“The National Archives of Canada purchased most of the original artwork because of its cultural significance,” accord-ing to thehoopandholler.com website in Comely’s home town, Portage la Prairie, Man.

Another female Canadian comic book superhero began getting the chop on villains 29 years ago.

Montreal writer Mark Shain-blum created Fleur de Lys in 1985, with her inaugural story published in New Triumph No. 3.

Martial arts expert Manon Deschamps “adopted the cos-tumed identity of Fleur de Lys to help Phillip Wise – a.k.a. Northguard – fight crime and political intrigue in Canada,” especially a right-wing evan-gelical group, Canada Post noted.

Her blue-and-white uniform was designed by co-creator Ga-briel Morrissette, a Montreal art-ist.

The Quebec-based character also wore a fleur-de-lys on her forehead. Two of the stylized lil-ies, which are on the province’s flag, were placed elsewhere on her body.

The stories were slow hitting the stores, with the eight-part se-ries taking five years to com-plete.

A journalist and editor, Shain-blum, who later moved to Ot-tawa, is best-known for writing science fiction and comic book stories, starting in the early 1980s with two issues of Orion: The Ca-nadian Magazine of Time and Space, according to Wikipedia.

He founded what became known as Matrix Comics, one of the few independent Canadian comic book firms, and also co-created Angloman, a parody of Quebec politics produced for a book with Morrissette, then as a newspaper strip.

Morrissette has worked for several comic book publishers, including U.S.-based DC Comics and Marvel Comics, producing artwork for Spider-Man 2099, Doc Savage, Ragman and Checkmate.

He has also worked on ani-mated features.

Page 8: USPS pulls back the curtain on some of next year’s designs

In our continuing series of articles about running a

children’s stamp club, we are looking today at some activi-ties that motivate and inspire young collectors. If you haven’t already guessed from the title, this discussion is about soaking stamps off pa-per.

Deciding what to do with a new batch of donated stamps is one of the very basic skills that children need to learn. Experienced collectors know that a wrong decision can drastically affect the final re-sults, not to mention the value of the stamp.

Hopefully the students or youngsters have listened to earlier discussions about how to get stamps. They have po-litely bothered parents, rela-tives, neighbours and business owners nearby about their need for postage stamps and envelopes. If they are working out of a school or library, put-ting up a few posters – yet an-

other worthwhile activity for a meeting – advertising their needs is easily arranged. An-other idea is to run an ad in the local newspaper. Any local stamp dealers can be written to by older kids requesting their experienced and expert assistance. And let’s not forget the potential of Internet social sites like Facebook and Twit-ter for sending out pleas for help and donations.

So now the stamps are ar-riving by the bagful. Now what?

When you showed the group your own collection, of course you explained the ne-cessity for delicate handling of all stamps, especially mint ones. However, these are young people, who rarely wash their hands unless told, so the rules need to be flexible. We want them to have fun but to also be respectful of the hobby. For this activity, they must handle the stamps and envelopes a lot.

So let’s imagine that there are 10 kids sitting in pairs at medium-sized tables and on each desk is a mixed pile of loose stamps, stamps on pieces of paper, half-enve-lopes, and full envelopes. There are prepaid envelopes, brown envelopes, red and green envelopes from Christ-mas, Pitney-Bowes stamped envelopes, and probably some garbage, like gum wrappers. Also at the table is a variety of unstamped enve-lopes into which the sorted stamps will go. Glassines are best of course, but not re-quired, and several sizes are necessary.

The first job for the pair is to carefully sort the similar groups, being careful to not touch the stamps at all if pos-sible, unless they are off pa-per already; these go into a separate envelope. Next, the coloured envelopes are re-moved. Anything that is not white or whitish. Then all

stamps on paper shards are gathered. There should re-main a pile of “business postal markings,” such as the Pitney-Bowes cancels, which can be examined later.

The next activity is to search the real stamps for cancellations. We are assum-ing that you also explained in detail to the audience what these are, their meaning, and why people search for them. If not, then now is the time. Have them placed in an enve-lope for later sorting, clipping and mounting.

At last comes the pile that needs to be sorted and trimmed down so that only stamps on a bit of paper re-main. Demonstrations are ab-solutely essential at all times, but slow and deliberate ones are needed with younger people. Show them that they must try to leave about a centimetre at minimum around any stamp that has to be cut from a large shard or an envelope. Some people, no matter their age, cannot ma-nipulate scissors. Reassure the kids there is no rush – this is one of the reasons we have them working in pairs – and that they can take all the time they need.

There is one more step that needs to happen at this point, and the younger the team the more assistance they will need. This is the time to sepa-rate the “licking” stamps from the “self-sticking” ones. This can be quite a challenge, and it must be stressed that if the difference cannot be de-termined, it really doesn’t matter. When done soaking, there will be some that sim-ply will not fall off the paper. All that happens, as readers probably know, is that the pe-ripheral paper will either wrinkle up or shred. This just makes the ultimate display a bit untidy compared with avoiding water in the first place.

Does it really matter if they are off paper? Certainly not for children. Anything that will simplify the process is a good thing. If kids are happy with a paper frame around their stamps, that can be their choice. In fact, I would recom-mend it for the seven-years-and-under group to minimize chances of an accident.

Eventually the team will finish sorting. It is time to make “stamp soup.”

Each team needs a bowl or bucket of warm water. They will also need something on which to set the stamps to dry and absorb water, such as newspaper or blotting paper. To maintain the illusion, a ruler to stir the broth would be handy.

Have the kids slowly sub-merge the stamps and stir gently so that they don’t bunch. The time needed for each stamp will vary dramati-cally, but soak until some can be seen floating free on their own. This can be 10 to 20 minutes, with occasional stir-ring.

While this is happening, kids can decide what to do with the rest of the bundles. An example as to what hap-pens when you try to soak a stamp off red paper, and even brown paper, may be valuable here. Kids need to see that a stamp dyed red or yellow by poor soaking, while pretty, is no longer a philatelic collect-ible.

At last the stamps can be pulled from the soup (remind the children not to taste the water, just in case) and laid on the absorbent sheets. They will need to sit so as to dry for a day or so, and then ide-ally, pressed for a while to minimize wrinkling.

Philately is about patience, and learning that progress comes in small steps. Making “soup” is just part of the pro-cess of maturing as a good collector. W

ada Post has implemented the first round to cancellations. In October of this year delivery was ended for 74,000 ad-dresses. November was ex-pected to see service dropped to another 26,000 addresses. Communities affected in-cluded Montreal, Quebec; Oakville and Kanata, Ont.; Halifax, N.S; Winnipeg, Man.; and Calgary and Fort McMur-ray, Alta.

Since Canada Post’s plan calls for eliminating service to five million addresses across Canada over five years, close to one million addresses could be cut in 2015.

Home addresses scheduled to lose door-to-door delivery as a result of the conversion will receive an information package with a mail-in sur-vey.

This package will inform homeowners on how they can express their priorities and preferences about this new delivery method. W

Delivery...Continued from page 1 Great Britain’s Royal Mail

has issued a postmark to cele-brate the European Space Agen-cy’s (ESA) successful landing on comet 67P on Nov. 12.

The postmark, which was used Nov. 13 and 14 on domestic mail, is in the form of a series of wavy lines to the right, and text inscription to the left.

The ESAs probe successfully landed on the comet, after a flight lasting 10 years. The Ro-setta mission consists of the

Philae lander, and an orbiter. It is the first successful landing on a comet and is expected to offer insights into the formation of the solar system.

Comets are small bodies made up of dust, water, rock and gasses. They are believed to be among the oldest-surviv-

ing objects in the solar system. The Royal Mail cancel is just

the latest in a series of tributes to the probe.

In 2012, Great Britain created a six-stamp set of space sci-ence stamps, which included an image of the Rosetta craft on the souvenir sheet.

Other philatelic tributes have come from Comoro Is-

lands, Djibouti, Germany, Guinea, Malagasy Republic, Mali, South Ossetia, and St. Thomas and Prince Islands. W

If you have come across Herm, it’s probably because you are

familiar with the larger Chan-nel Islands, including Guern-sey, to the west, and Jersey to the southeast. Herm is part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the English Channel, a little is-land only 2.4 kilometres long and less than 800 metres wide. Surprisingly, this little island uses its own local stamps. It is believed that Herm was once connected to another small is-l and , J e thou , about 1 .2 kilometres to the southwest, but that connection was lost when the land between them was washed away.

In addition to local stamps, Herm has its own monetary system called doubles (pro-nounced doobles).

Since the First World War, the isle of Herm was leased from the British government. How-ever, in 1949 the Bailiwick of Guernsey bought Herm from the British Crown. Thus Herm is a dependency of Guernsey, and is rented out to tenants. Herm’s local stamps began ap-pearing in 1949 and were in use until Guernsey took over its own postal administration from Britain in 1969.

herm’S FirST STamP iSSUeS

The issues of 1949 consist of Herm map stamps that we can see in Figure 1 but in the inter-est of space, instead of showing them twice, they are shown overprinted “Coronation 1953.” The “pigeon service” part of the 1949 issue, printed on orange paper with black lettering, is in-teresting in that at the time of

issue telephone connections be-tween the islands had not yet been completed, and though not used much, the pigeon could be employed much like the limited emergency use that had been seen with pigeon post in France. At first, the object be-low the pigeon on our stamp might look like a padlock with the dark area in the middle be-ing the “keyhole.” But exam-ined under a magnifying glass we can see that it is what it should be: the value of one shil-ling.

The illustration at the top of the page shows the original 1949 green 1d (one-penny) map stamp bisected. Not common usage, it appears as a bisect on a postcard cancelled on Herm on Oct. 18, 1957. The year is sig-nificant as the website gbstamp.co.uk reports: “on four occa-sions between 1953 and 1957 stamp shortages of the ½d val-ues meant 1d stamps were bi-sected for use on postcards and these properly used on cards,

are well worth looking out for.” It confirms the status of our bi-sect and we see that it has been properly used, with a British stamp on the right corner as it should be with the Herm bisect on the other.

According to a note from J. Sanders, a philatelist from Southampton, England, “very few of these bisects exist as the bisect was in use from Septem-ber 20 to October 19 when new supplies of the four doubles stamps were received.” Again, as with our 1d Herm bisect, the British 2d covers the normal postage charged in Guernsey.

SUB-POST OFFiCeSAs early as 1925 the British

post office had a sub-post office on Herm, which closed in 1938, as operating it became finan-cially unfeasible. A.G. Jefferes, the tenant of Herm in 1948, at the time unsuccessfully asked that the sub-post office be re-opened, as he believed the is-land had a high potential for tourism. However, the post of-fice, incorrectly, did not agree with Jefferes outlook, so he opened his own local post with the service carrying mail to and from Herm to the sub-post of-fice at St. Peter Port in Guern-sey, where outgoing mail could enter the main British system. As was true of other British lo-cal postal systems, mail had to have British postage stamps ac-

company the local stamps on the back of the envelope or if on the front, as on a postcard, the Herm stamp was regulated to appear as far from the Brit-ish stamp as possible, usually on the upper left corner.

Major Peter S. Wood suc-ceeded Jefferes in 1949. He took care of the island from 1949 to 1980, performing restoration and upkeep and for our inter-est, he continued to operate the Herm local post service. Wood left a lasting mark for collectors. On Sept. 17, 1969 Wood sent a first-day cover, consisting of the set of six definitives, to himself. These stamps were intended to be a set marking Guernsey’s postal independence on Oct. 1, 1969, but the stamps weren’t is-sued until Sept. 17, 1969, avail-able for only 14 days. These constitute the last local issues from Herm.

SeLeCTed iLLUSTraTiONSThere are many Herm

stamps and first-day covers that I could have chosen for il-lustration from some 27 local issues, made up of approxi-mately 112 individual stamps not counting complete booklet panes.

The booklet panes present a challenge, as my research has not found them anywhere. Booklets are especially inter-esting as they are stapled ei-ther on the left or right made up of blocks of six stamps with selvedge from the left or right sides. The ones shown contain four panes of half-doubles and two panes of one double. The front cover lists these with their total panes and the equivalent in doubles and finally in the value of the complete booklet as two shil-lings. The front inside cover provides the “regulations cov-ering the use of Herm Island local stamps.” The inside back cover helpfully shows the postal “rates of carriage” which are:• Four doubles for postcards and unsealed letters• Eight doubles for parcels under a pound

1995 COmiC BOOk SUPerherO STamPS

Issued on Oct. 2, 1995, Can-ada’s five 45-cent Comic Book Superhero stamps feature a Superman drawing by Joe Shuster, a Captain Canuck drawing by Richard Comely, Nelvana artwork by Adrian Dingle, Gabriel Morrissette’s drawing of Fleur de Lys and Leo Bachle’s drawing of Johnny Canuck.

The brightly coloured commemorat ives (Sco t t #1579-83) were designed by Louis Fishauf, with each char-acter appearing in comic book cover format, with titles in stylized dramatic lettering in keeping with the era in which they were published.

The “45” denominations were printed in single-colour circular frames at the bottom, above a small “CANADA.”

Ashton-Potter Canada Ltd. used five lithographic transfer colours to print six million of each stamp, on Coated Papers Ltd. stock, with Polyvinyl al-cohol gum and general tag-ging on all four sides. Perfora-tions are gauged at 13-by-12.5.

They were released in sheets of 10, with five of each in dif-ferent orders on the two hori-zontal rows. The characters’ faces were also reproduced on the left margin of each sheet, encirc led with different coloured frames.

Half of “SUPER” appears at the top of each mini-sheet, horizontally cut to leave about two-thirds of the word visible in large white letters outlined in black.

Panes supplied as regular stamp stock to post offices were folded vertically, but un-folded panes sold only in Can-ada Post’s annual Collections

yearbook command a super premium, at $35 mint or used, compared with the regular folded version, at $15 mint, $14 used.

Unfolded strips of five from quarterly packs are also priced slightly higher than the regu-lar strips, at $9 mint, $8 used,

an additional $1.50 and $1, re-spectively.

Superman, in his modern art reincarnation, was featured on five commemoratives Canada Post issued in booklets and on a mini-sheet last year. The booklet fronts feature examples of early comic book covers. W

• Six doubles for parcels from one to 10 pounds• One shilling for parcels over 10 pounds.

The back cover states that the tenant of Herm takes no responsibility whatsoever for the safe delivery of the article, though it is preceded by assur-ance that every care will be taken. The booklet is undated. The images are of the Herm map stamp of 1949 or the 1958 definitive issue. However, in-stead of the blue of the 1949 is-sue, the halfpenny stamp is the bright violet of the 1958 issue. The 1d is green like the 1949 but in a much darker shade as found in the 1958 1d, so the panes can be considered as coming from the 1958 series.

Another booklet with a left or right staple has the same

inside cover regulations but the description of contents has been moved from front cover to back, where the date is noted as July 1959 with an added “2500,” which may be the number issued. The book-let contains 12 four doubles, 12 eight doubles and a dozen 1½ doubles, with a total of six panes that add up to three shillings for the entire book-let.

This booklet lists some changes in carriage rates: a postcard has gone up from

four to eight doubles; and let-ters do not have a different charge if they are sealed and unsealed. They went down, either way, to 1½d; parcels ir-respective of weight went down to 3d, and added was an additional 1/6 for registering a letter or package.

Another cover shows a stamp from the other 1959 se-ries, depicting a map and boat, along with a larger en-velope, both of which are sig-nificant in that they were sent through the mail outside

Herm, in fact to Canada, and are not philatelic mail such as a first-day cover.

STamP avaiLaBiLiTYAlthough the first series of

Herm stamps was issued May 26, 1949, it’s not too late to get

some issues from Herm’s on-line gift shop at herm.com. What’s no longer available there may be found at auction, on eBay or in your local club circuit books. Since there are only 27 local Herm stamp is-sues, it is a fun, manageable ad-venture to collect the finite number issued. W

One of the successful, if not the most successful, Cana-

dian philatelic publishing pro-grams is the British North Amer-ica Philatelic Society’s Exhibits Series, which has reached Nos. 76 and 77. That in itself is un-precedented and needs to be re-spected in philatelic literature circles.

What BNAPS has done with this series is honour collectors for their research, dedication, success, and contribution to the hobby. The series is a boost for philately by encouraging not only exhibiting, but also research and further study.

Number 76 in the series is Gary W. Steele’s 1937-1938 Cana-dian Definitive Issue, a 128-page traditional exhibit, which has merited Steele an array of med-als including five Gold and five Reserve Grand awards in Can-ada; and at the American Phila-telic Society’s Champion of Champions competition in Mil-waukee at StampShow 2013, it received a Prix d’Honneur award.

The 1937-1938 Canadian Defini-tive Issue deals with all aspects of that definitive issue from the first stamps in 1937 to the complete one-cent to $1 values as well as the six-cent airmail. It does not appear that anything has missed

the watchful eye and ever re-search-minded Steele.

The author examines the rates and how each was used. Some, of course, like the four-cent issue, helped make up odd rates. Others had a specific pur-pose like the three-cent stamps, whose prime use was domestic first-class mail. Steele notes that the three-cent stamp, “more than all other definitive values of the period” had the largest print run of more than two bil-lion stamps. It was used for make-up rates too.

BNAPS exhibit No. 76 has es-says, die proofs, plate proofs, both horizontal and vertical gutter and plate proofs, and im-perforate stamps. Among the regular issues are items that fea-ture unusual stamps because of flaws in the printings.

Then there are booklets, coils, O.H.M.S. (On her Majesty’s Ser-vice) overprints in both five and four holes, and precancels. Steele concludes with informa-tion on surface mail domestic and surface mail international; airmail domestic, USA, and British Commonwealth; and airmail international.

What enhances 1937-1938 Ca-nadian Definitive Issue are the many illustrations, some of which are two-page spreads

while others have remarkable covers with excellent markings to go with the stamps.

Steele first encountered orga-nized stamp collecting at the 1971 annual BNAPS show in Halifax, but it was with the Nova Scotia Stamp Club in 1978 that stamp collecting “really got his attention,” and it was not long before he chose to “collect the 1937-1938 Definitive Issue.” He has mastered his chosen topic with excellence.

Since Ian Kimmerly closed his Ottawa store, there is a new ad-

dress for BNAPS titles. BNAPS titles are now available from Sparks Auctions, 1550 Carling Ave., Suite 202, Ottawa, ON K1Z 8S8; phone: 613-567-3336; email: [email protected]. The person in charge is now Brian Wolfenden. 1937-1938 Ca-nadian Definitive Issue in spiral binding is available for $63 Cdn.

FrOm JameS BeNdONTwice in the past year, I have

updated readers with the prog-ress James Bendon is making with his book, UPU Specimen Stamps 1879-1961. His latest re-port thanks friends, clients, and professional philatelists and re-lates how a “fruitful visit to the UPU in Berne” also helped. The text, he says, is complete for nearly all the countries and most are now illustrated with a wide variety of unusual or important UPU specimen stamps.

He still needs illustrations, however, for some countries, namely, Antigua, Ascension, Ba-hamas, British Solomon Islands, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Gambia, Gibral-tar, Gilbert & Ellice Islands, Gold Coast, Grenada, Hong Kong, Ja-maica (War Stamps and Tele-graphs), Montserrat, Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, St. Helena, St. Kitts-Nevis including St. Christopher and Nevis), Swazi-land, and Turks & Caicos Islands.

If anyone can help, write James Bendon, 39 Aldrington Rd., Lon-don SW16 1TU, United King-dom. This will be a definitive work on this topic.

FirST WOrLd WarThe September-October issue

of the American Topical Associa-tion’s Topical Time makes a strong statement for a new thematic col-lection: the stamps now paying tribute to what “was truly a cata-clysmic event in world history,” the First World War. Writer Barry N. Floyd says “a number of Eu-ropean countries have chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak” of the war with commemorative stamps.

He cites Belgium (a five-year project), Serbia, and “perhaps the most colorful and poignant ... come from Great Britain and the island of Jersey.” I am convinced there will be many more. Floyd’s article is very detailed on the British stamps that commenced a five-year project, a set that will have 30 stamps in total. I must admit the first five stamps are very impressive. Jersey’s new is-sue features six stamps and a miniature sheet.

Gibbons Stamp Monthly’s Au-gust issue has two feature arti-cles: “A miracle amidst catastro-phe: World War I and the Army Postal Service” and “World War I mail of German East Africa,” both of which lend a significant view of the history of that pe-riod.

The Gibbons September issue has a brief item from Royal Mail calling all descendents of the Post Office Rifles Regiment from the First World War. The item re-ports more than 75,000 men from the General Post Office fought with the Post Office Rifles. Those who wish to contact Royal Mail may email [email protected] or write Natasha Ay-ivor, First World Campaign, Royal Mail, 3rd Floor, 100 Victo-ria Embankment, London EC4Y 0HQ, United Kingdom. The way people move today there could well be some Canadian descen-dents. W

There are many Canadian stamps commemorating the

Second World War, but there are only a few that mark the First World War. The more re-cent memories, plus the dra-matic advances in technology that led to a greater role for air-craft, submarines and other na-val vessels accounts greatly for the additional attention. This year marks the 100th anniver-sary of the beginning of the war that lasted until 1918.

Even though we may pur-chase poppies to honour sol-diers from every conflict this country has participated in, the slaughter of soldiers in Flan-ders Fields occurred during the First World War. We recall the words of the first verse of the poem that Lt.-Col. John McCrae wrote:

In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below.

The COST OF The ‘greaT War’

The financial cost of the First World War is estimated to have been about $186 billion US – in 1914-18 dollars – including the cost of the war to Britain and the Allied powers of more than $125 billion and a $60-billion-plus cost to Germany and the Central powers. This doesn’t include the costs to the neutral powers of Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

The cost in human lives was even more staggering, with about 17 million people killed; nine million-plus for the Allied powers and more than seven million from the Central powers. Of these deaths, about 10 million were military personnel, while the remaining seven million were civilians.

All Quiet on the Western Front, a 1929 novel written by Erich Maria Remarquez, a German soldier who fought in the trenches, includes the famous story describing how men from

both sides stopped their fighting to commemorate Christmas to-gether in the trenches. Needless to say, the author abhorred war and all that it involves.

For those who have watched episodes of the rebooted BBC TV series Upstairs Downstairs, there are touching scenes that bring back the horror of war, including a woman whose fiancé was killed in action and a soldier re-turning with shell shock (now well-known as post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition com-monly suffered by military per-sonnel and first responders) who finds the new year celebration, with all its revelry, unbearable.

In her internationally ac-claimed 2001 book, Peacemakers:

The Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and Its Attempt to End War, To-ronto historian Margaret Mc-Millan describes the peace pro-cess that met a torturous time in Paris at the end of the war. French premier Georges Clem-enceau, concerned about the devastation to France, blamed Germany and tried to assess damages against Germany, but to no avail.

The First World War was touted as “the war to end all wars,” but by 1933, Adolf Hitler had become chancellor of Ger-many and had amassed the Nazi

movement that was to take the world into the Second World War in 1939.

Ottawa’s National War memorial, originally erected in 1939 to commemorate those killed during the First World War, is depicted on a stamp released in 2009.

First World War flying ace Billy Bishop is remembered on a 1994 stamp.

In Flanders Fields, commemorated on a 1968 stamp, was written in 1915 by Lt.-Col. John mcCrae, after he attended the funeral of a friend killed during the Second Battle of Ypres.

aUSTraLiaAustralia is commemorating the centenary of the

beginning of the First World War with a set of four stamps released Oct. 21, remembering the contribution made by the defence services over the last century.

The Australian Defence Force is comprised of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and the Australian Army.

greeNLaNdThe Denmark Expedition of 1906-08 was honoured

on two stamps issued by Greenland on Oct. 20. Jørgen Brønlund, Niels Peter Høgh Hagen and Ludvig My-lius-Erichsen participated in the discovery that the Peary Channel did not exist and that Peary Land was part of the rest of Greenland.

JerSeYJersey issued four stamps on Oct. 30 highlighting

pirates and privateering. In the days when the easiest method of transporting goods in bulk was by water, unscrupulous members of seafaring communities saw its disruption as an ideal way of making money.

Piracy was frowned on by authorities, unless the ship happened to belong to an enemy power, in which case a blind eye may have been turned. Despite this, piracy was a criminal offence unless it was sanctioned by the state and termed “privateering.”

Many islanders and Jersey ships became involved in privateering and four exciting stories that occurred during the 18th century are depicted on this set of stamps.

BriTiSh aNTarCTiC TerriTOrYBritish Antarctic Territory released four stamps in

mid-November featuring iSTAR, an ambitious scien-tific program funded by NERC (Natural Environment Research Council). The mission is to improve under-standing of what’s happening to the area of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet where the greatest rates of ice loss over the last decades have been observed.

The four stamps show: twin otter aircraft (65p); sur-face radar (75p); RRS James Clark Ross (£1); and an autosub (£1.20).

BahamaSThe Bahamas issued four Christmas stamps Nov. 11

that concentrate on the message of Christmas. The illustrations are portrayed with the characters of

the familiar nativity story shown as silhouettes against brightly coloured night skies, with each scene helping to emphasize the various messages on the stamps.

The stamps show: Peace on Earth (15 cent); Tidings of Great Joy (50 cent); a Time for Giving (65 cent); and a Saviour is Born (70 cent).

NeW ZeaLaNdA souvenir sheet issued by New Zealand on Nov. 14

marks the 60th anniversary of the Hastings Stamp Col-lectors Club and the 80th anniversary of the Hawke’s Bay Philatelic Society. The sheet was to be issued on the first day of the BAYPEX 2014 National Stamp Show being held in Hawke’s Bay and incorporates three stamps from the “For King & Empire” stamp issue.

UNiTed NaTiONSThe United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA)

issued a set of 12 stamps depicting endangered species on Oct. 23.

This is the 22nd set of stamps in UNPA’s multi-year series on Endangered Species. The series was launched in 1993 to highlight the need for the protection of en-dangered species throughout the world. An array of marine life is featured on this year’s stamps: Denise’s pygmy seahorse, whale shark, scalloped hammerhead Asian arowana, Arapaima, basking shark, largetooth sawfish, Siberian sturgeon, humphead wrasse, great white shark, giant manta ray, and paddlefish.

Canadian cop’s sentimental souvenir solves mystery

By Bret Evans

Canada is going to get another set of “jubilees,” a set of six stamps being brought out next year to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 60 years as monarch.

The stamps are part of 2012’s stamp program, unveiled May 16 by Rob Merrifield, Minister of State (Trans-port) and minister responsible for Canada Post.

Deepak Chopra, head of Canada Post, said the program appeals to Can-adian culture and history. “The stamp program consists of approximately 20 broad subjects or themes covering some 60 stamps,” he said.

Another set of stamps will com-memorate the 100th anniversary of sinking of the Titanic, or more specific-ally, Canada’s role in the tragedy. Many of the bodies were recovered by the Halifax-based vessel CS Mackay-Bennett and 328 of the 333 bodies re-covered were retrieved by Canadian

ships. The bodies were taken to Hali-fax, where relatives went to identify and claim them. Almost half were bur-ied in Halifax.

The Marine Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax has a display of wreckage recovered at the same time.

Two other centennials are to be commemorated. A set of stamps will showcase the teams of the Canadian Football League and the 100th Grey Cup game. Two stamps will be issued to mark the centennial of the Calgary Stampede.

A single stamp will be issued for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games, the second issue in the Baby Wildlife definitive series will be launched, and the 2012 flower stamp will be the daylily. There will also be a set of five permanent-rate defin-itive stamps with images of the Can-adian flag.

Dorval, Que., a small town in a big city, played host to Canada’s na-

tional stamp show May 13-15 when the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada held its annual convention.

John Cooper, president of the Lakeshore Stamp Club, the host club of the event, served as master of cere-monies for the official opening.

Other participants included Francis Scarpaleggia, MP for Lac-Saint-Louis; local mayor Edgar Rouleu, society pres-ident George Peppall, and Canada Post representative Genevieve Latour.

As usual there was a stamp unveil-ing, in this case the se-tenant pair on

the theme of methods of delivery. One stamp of the two, which shows a dog-sled team, had been unveiled earlier. The second stamp shows a barrel that had been rigged with a sail and rudder and cast adrift by residents of Magdalen Island.

“It’s often said that ‘necessity is the mother of invention,’ and that was certainly true in the winter of 1910, when a snapped telegraph pole sev-ered communications between the Magdalen Islands and the mainland. Ingenious community leaders rigged a large molasses barrel, known as a ponchon, with a rudder and a sail,

The Royal Mail has unveiled the third and final series of stamps for the 2012 London Summer Olympic and Paralym-pic games.

They are to be officially launched July 27, exactly one year to the day before the opening ceremonies.

The 10 stamps in the final series bring the total number of stamps being issued for the Games to 30, the largest single British stamp program since the millen-nium series.

The stamps are printed in two se-ten-ant strips of five first-class stamps. The sports being honoured are Paralympic sailing, high jump, volleyball, wheel-chair rugby, wrestling, wheelchair ten-nis, fencing, gymnastics, triathlon, and handball. All were designed by Studio David Hillman using illustrations by various artists. The square format stamps will be printed by Cartor Secur-ity Printing in sheets of 25 and 50 with

22 December 2, 2014 • CaNadiaN Stamp NewS • www.canadianstampnews.ca

Whilst whiling away a bit of time seeking inspira-

tion for this column, I stumbled upon an Ottawa-area dealer’s postal history offerings on eBay.

I had just finished surfing for a favourite topic when I spotted an illustrated box suggesting something else that might inter-est me.

It did.Gadzooks! Voila! There should always be time

set aside for a bit of fun!Besides, as a storyteller, I’m

always looking for ... well, sto-ries to tell.

And while I regularly write about commemoratives and definitives in Canadian Stamp News, focusing on the history of the topics they feature, plus production and any unusual sidebar subjects, it is their use as postage that can sometimes offer even more information of interest to a collector.

This is especially true if a stamp is still attached to an en-velope, postcard or other piece of mail, with appropriate or un-usual cancels, of course.

Such is the subject at hand – a veritable cornucopia, a term drawn from the Latin reference to a “horn of plenty.”

After all, it is close to Christ-mas.

a mONeY Tag, a FLierS NOTiCe, UNUSUaL CaNCeLS

aNd imPriNTSMoving right along, the first

item spotted in the Nepean, Ont. dealer’s listings is a 1944 wartime mailing tag that was

once attached to a “money packet” by a piece of sturdy string.

To forward cash, back in the days when people risked send-ing currency through the mail, banks used special envelopes to which cardboard address tags were fastened. The packets were, of course, registered, in order to trace any that might go missing or be purloined en route to their destination.

This now-unusual philatelic offering bears a postage meter sticker showing the sender spent $2.12, which was a hefty amount during the Second World War. The postmark, in purple ink, identifies the post-ing depot as “Terminal A. No. 11” in Toronto.

An imprint on the meter la-bel shows a hand holding a symbolic burning torch aloft, with curved text reading “Hold high the torch of freedom,” above larger patriotic wartime text bidding people to “Buy Victory Bonds.”

At the bottom are two circu-lar Railway Post Office (RPO) postmarks. One reads “B’Water Junction & Mid.R.P.O-No. 2,” t h e o t h e r “ P t . H o p e & Tor.R.P.O.-No. 6”

Someone penciled two nota-tions, identifying the Blackwa-ter Junction and Midland, Ont. RPO cancel being applied “late by 7 months” beyond its re-corded use period, with the Port Hope and Toronto RPO cancel being “CN-476.06,” which was probably a reference to that particular Canadian Na-tional Railway canceller.

The “No.” references likely refer to the specific “hammer” postmarking device issued to railroad mail coaches, with numbers at the top that identi-fied the mail clerk who was us-ing it at the time.

All this was available from the dealer for an opening bid of $25 US plus shipping and han-dling.

One item I bid on bears the imprint of a Toronto newspa-per, the Empire, which merged 119 years ago with the Toronto Mail to become the Mail and Empire. It merged in 1936 with the Globe and became the Globe and Mail, a Toronto-based news-paper distributed across the country.

As a now mostly retired newspaperman, I’ve collected related imprinted covers for several decades.

As an added bonus, this one was postmarked in 1894, the year before the Empire-Mail merger.

Smaller type below the deco-rative Old English type that re-produced the Empire name identifies it as having origi-nated from the newspaper’s Montreal branch office.

Addressed to L.B. Archibald Esq., the latter term being short for the old-fashioned title “es-quire,” a three-cent Small Queen Queen Victoria defini-tive is tied to the front by a Montreal duplex cancel.

At $20 US, the opening bid price seemed reasonable.

Posted seven years later from Montreal, a 1901 machine can-cel ties two one-cent Queen Vic-toria Numeral issue definitives to an envelope with the J.T. Bell Footwear factory building on the upper left.

Such imprints went out of style a long time ago, but are an attractive decoration that represents an industry that flourished more than a century ago.

It was offered with a bargain opening bid of $10 US.

Someone who thought they could get away with using a three-cent Excise revenue stamp instead of investing two cents in postage for a 1932 cover cost the recipient a standard double-the-unpaid-postage fee.

A four-cent Postage Due stamp is tied to the cover by a typical pencil stroke, likely ap-plied by the mail carrier who had to collect the four cents.

The Excise stamp was post-marked with a slogan cancel promoting May 11-18 cleanup week in Montreal, with the dates and the bilingual text “Clean Paint & Beautify/Net-toyi Penture Embellisse.” A boxed “4 Cents Due” post of-fice mark in purple ink was ap-plied on the bottom right.

To add insult to injury, the re-cipient – the City of Point Claire – just outside Montreal, had to use taxpayers’ money to pay the penalty fee.

The far-from-common cov-er’s starting bid was $25 US.

An even more interesting im-print on an envelope mailed in 1936 from Jacksonville, Fla. to a “purchasing agent” in the same city deserved to be snapped up by a keen-eyed collector.

The text identifying the sender as the Florida Hardware Co. was ordinary, but the grin

on the alligator poised atop a box promoting “The Alligator” brand of tools and implements was too attractive to resist men-tioning.

In addition, the stamp tied with a “Buy U.S. Savings Bonds-Ask Your Postmaster” machine cancel is a two-cent George Washington definitive from a coil, though missing perfs on the right side render it of little monetary value.

This cover was also offered for a $10 US opening bid.

An unusual, and appropri-ate, heart-shaped logo in red was printed on a 1905 cover mailed by Halifax stamp dealer H.L. Hart to a preacher in Okla-homa.

At first glance, there is noth-ing unusual in the heart shape. But a closer look reveals it con-sists, equally appropriately, of small maple leaves. From Can-ada, you say!

A nice cover, it had an open-ing bid of $20 US.

A printed card directing a Kitchener, Ont. mail carrier to deliver 100 fliers to households in that city was franked with two 50-cent King George V Ad-miral definitives.

Tied to the card by a roller cancel, a nice circular 1926 Kitchener postmark was ap-plied at the bottom.

But the stamps offer two ad-ditional stories.

Attached upside down, that positioning is a traditional slur intended by someone seeking to display opposition to the monarchy, or perhaps the sender was merely in a rush.

The imperforate side on one stamp shows it came from the right side of a pane and, though not as popular as those with all-round perfs, is actu-ally a bit rarer.

The card offers a nice combi-nation of subjects, all for a $20 opening bid.

In a example of “two-for-the-price-of-one,” the front of an envelope mailed from Montreal to J.G. Butterworth, Esq. in Ot-tawa was franked with a pre-cancelled one-cent King George V Admiral definitive.

Such overprinted stamps, in black text, were typically sold to bulk mailers in larger com-munities to speed up process-ing without requiring a post-mark obliteration, and to dis-courage shop and factory clerks from stealing stamps to trade for smokes or candy at small shops.

What makes this stamp un-usual is the doubling of a “Montreal Quebec” imprint, with the text divided by two horizontal lines printed once in the normal horizontal posi-tion, then again at an angle. The pane of 100 was likely fed through the printing press a second time, by mistake.

The $20 US opening bid, if successful, struck me as a bar-gain.

The last item I spotted in that dealer’s offering was a capital example of a pre-stamp Cana-dian cover.

Quick, what was Ottawa’s name before being chosen as the current seat of Parliament?

Correct! Bytown was named after Col. John By (1779-1836), a British military engineer who ramrodded construction of the Rideau Canal south from the former lumber town to Lake Ontario at Kingston, Ont.

Folded “letter sheets” bear-ing a Bytown postmark turn up in dealers’ stock occasionally.

But an opening bid of $70 US seemed fair for this un-usual wrapper, which was struck in black ink applied to a “1/2” metal device. That post office marking indicated payment of the required half-pence fee for mailing a news-paper.

The 1852 Bytown “double ring” postmark applied in black is also extremely read-able.

Such treasures can also be found at some stamp shops, at stamp shows and occasionally in auction catalogues, al-though low-priced covers are now more frequently offered via online sites.

Sifting through a box of en-velopes can be a pleasant and rewarding experience, espe-cially for those who like the challenge of a good hunt. Un-usual stamp combinations and postmarks can dress up a stamp album, or add to an ex-isting postal history collec-tion.

Whether you find them in dealers’ stock, online or tucked away to emerge “some day” when you retire or oth-erwise have more time on your hands to figure out what to do with such gems, some-thing out-of-the-ordinary can set you on a different path in this hobby.

Unlike stamps, postal his-tory items are often unique, and often not that expensive.

Checking out the meaning of special postmark markings can also provide additional education about mail habits past and present, through re-search or by asking someone to help.

Stamp collecting, as they say, can broaden your hori-zons. W

The 1852 postmark on this cover shows the pre-stamp ‘1/2’-rate mark.

OLD TIME BARGAINS #843

SPECIAL OFFER #15,873

Here’s a good offer that you may not see again – a complete set of used blocks of four of the 1930 Canada Arch Issue (Scott #162-177). List price is $350.00+. My price is just $139.50 while they last.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,874

The next two specials are al-ways popular whenever I offer them. First here are the only two offi cial airmail stamps ever issued by Canada (Scott #CO1-CO2). I have some lovely VF NH mint examples to offer. List price is $45.00. My price is just half at $22.50. Or make it $79.95 for blocks of four.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,875The next three specials feature plate proofs of special delivery issues. These proofs were printed in very small quan-tities and few are available on the mar-ketplace today. First here is #E1, the 10¢ green fi rst issue. I have a very fi ne

single available at only $950.00. Only about 70 of these exist.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,876The special delivery issues are no-table for their outstanding engrav-ing, and this one is no exception (Scott #E6). I have a very fi ne pair of plate proofs available. List price is $700.00. My price is $495.00.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,877This third special features Scott #E8, the 20¢ dark carmine. I can supply a very fi ne pair of proofs at $495.00 (list price is $700.00) or a single at $249.00.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,878Here’s the stamp I chose for my letterhead many years ago -- the 20¢ orange special deliv-ery issued in 1927 (Scott #E3). List price for a F-VF NH mint single is $92.50. My price is just $34.95. Or make it $129.95 for a block of four.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,879Next, here is the 10¢ top value of the 1933 post-age due series (Scott #J14). I have some very nice VF NH mint examples in stock. List price is $100.00. My price is just $39.95 for a single or $139.95 for a block of four.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,880Five-hole perforated OHMS offi cials are scarce as well as popular with collectors. Here is a VF used example of #OA221, the 5¢ blue from the 1935 is-sue. List price is $82.50. My price is $44.50.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,881The fi ve-hole type of offi cial perfi n was replaced in later years by a four-hole type. Here is the 10¢ rose carmine from the 1938 issue (#O241a). This one is scarce. A VF NH mint single lists at $140.00. My price is just $69.95 for a single of $249.95 for a nice block of four.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,882

Next how about this lovely plate proof block of eight of the 5¢ New Brunswick (#8Pii-iv) in the colour of issue, with vertical “SPECIMEN” over-prints in red. This is where

things get interesting – the block shows all three of the overprint types. Type D is the rarest, occurring only 10 times in a sheet of 100! List price for a VF block is $1,100.00. My price is $495.00 only (or fi ve payments of $99.00 each).

SPECIAL OFFER #15,883Here is another great offer -- plate proof blocks of eight of the 10¢ and 12½¢ Nova Scotia (#12Pi-ii, 13Pi-ii). Both are printed in issued colours with diagonal “SPECI-MEN” overprints in green and red respec-tively. Both show not only two overprint types (thick and thin letters) but a full plate imprint as well. List price in VF condition is $1,000.00+. My price $395.00 (or fi ve pay-ments of $79.00 each).

SPECIAL OFFER #15,884Four more proof offers follow, this time from Newfoundland. The 10¢ value of the attractive fi rst Cents Issue portrayed Prince Albert. I have some

nice plate proofs available (#27Pi). Condition is VF and list price is $120.00. My price is $69.95 or $129.95 for a pair. I have one imprint block at $269.95.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,885

Here is the 13¢ value from the same set. It pic-tures a fi shing schooner. These are printed in the issued colour on card mounted india paper (#30P). List price is $140.00. My price for a VF pair is just $95.00.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,886Here’s one I have had trouble acquir-ing over the years -- #33P. This is the 3¢ vermilion from 1870. The proofs are truly beautiful with amazing viv-id colour. List price for a VF pair is

$150.00. My price is $95.00. I also have singles at $49.95 or blocks of four at $179.95.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,887

Two offers follow on scarce plate proofs from the 1908 Map Stamp (#86P). Here is a plate proof pair in the issued colour on card mounted india paper. List price

for the pair in VF condition is $200.00. My price is just $119.00. I also have singles at $59.50 or blocks of four at $195.00.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,888Early Newfoundland is very hard to fi nd in choice condition. Here is a VF NH mint single of the 12¢ brown Queen Victoria (Scott #29). List price is $300.00. My price is $179.00 while they last.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,889Also very desirable is this F-VF NH mint single of the 1¢ brown (Scott #43). List price is $337.50. My price is $195.00 only. Just one left in stock in this premium quality!

SPECIAL OFFER #15,890

Here is the Pictorial Issue (Scott #145-159). The small format of the preceding set was abandoned in favour of a larg-er sized stamp. List price for a F-VF mint NH set is $325.00. My price is $195.00 only.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,891

A change in printers re-sulted in the Publicity set being re-engraved.

The new dies show small differences from the originals. Besides this, the stamps are readily recognized by their brighter colours and thicker gum. A VF NH mint set of Scott #163-171 lists at $440.00. I have a couple of sets in stock at just $269.00 each.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,892From 1932 here is the fi rst Resources Issue (Scott #183-199). This is a long set with the colour changes in-cluded. Condition is fresh mint NH with almost VF centering. List price is $186.75. My price is $129.00 only.

SPECIAL OFFER #15,893

Here’s another popular set from Newfoundland – the 1933 Sir Humphrey Gilbert issue (Scott #212-225). List price for a complete set of F-VF NH mint singles is $302.00. My price is just $179.95.
