Groundwater recharge and conservation of Cauvery water are important for the tail-end region of the delta. Being close to sea, Karaikal does not have good groundwater supply due to seawater intrusion. Another issue with the district is the wastage of Cauvery water that’s flowing into the sea during the monsoon season. Keela Vanjore is a small hamlet that has 76 household. Due to its close proximity to the sea, the village was affected by the 2004 Tsunami. This has turned all its water resources saline making it unfit for washing and rearing cattle. Fresh water for the village is provided through pipe supply and is being used for the purpose of drinking and washing.
The village used a nearby pond for bathing and cattle rearing which held water for a period of 8 months till summer. MARG Karaikal Port has constructed a pond double the size very near to the village apparently to hold water double the capacity. Work to connect the pond with canal and for its beautification is underway
The pond is expected to make fresh water resource available, thereby raising the confidence of villagers to invest more in cattle rearing as a profitable activity. Fish rearing is another revenue generating option planned to augment the village income..
