Description

1 Description

CP CAL1 is a calibration unit designated for calibrating CP TD1. The calibration is based on measurements of the known capacitance and dissipation factor values of a high-precision reference capacitor. The calibration procedure is controlled by the CPC 100 test system.

1.1 Reference Capacitor

An integral part of the CP CAL1 calibration unit is a high-precision reference capacitor. It is a cylinder capacitor filled by a very dry nitrogen N2 gas under pressure (of approx. 6 atm). A guard electrode prevents surface leakage current flow from the insulator to the connector on the low-voltage side by bypassing it to earth. Consequently, the relevant insulator between the high-voltage and low-voltage sides consists only of the very dry N2 gas.

1.2 High-Voltage Socket

CP CAL1 provides a high-voltage socket for connecting with the CP TD1’s high-voltage output. A high-voltage cable is available as CP TD1’s accessory.

Caution: The high-voltage socket of CP CAL1 is not safe for touching

during operation. Consider this socket as live and due to the high voltage

life dangerous.

Caution: The last 50 cm (20 inch) of the high-voltage cable are not

shielded and consequently are life dangerous.

Page 18: User Manualuserequip.com/files/specs/6023/CPCAL1 AE 1.pdf · 2016. 8. 29. · Before operating the CPC 100 and CP TD1 units, read the safety instructions in the CPC 100 User Manual.

18

1.3 Low-Voltage Connectors

CP CAL1 provides three low-voltage connectors C1, C2 and C3 for connecting with CP TD1 (see Figure 1-1: ”Low-voltage connectors” below). The connectors have the same capacitance but different dissipation factor values. On the connector C1 a high-precision capacitor with very low dissipation factor (0…10 ppm) is available. For the most accurate results it is recommended to use the connector C1.

The connector EG is connected with CP CAL1’s equipotential ground (functional earth, protection earth).

Caution: For safe operation ensure that all the units involved and the

trolley, if used, are connected to the common equipotential ground. Use

earth connection cables of at least 6 mm2 cross-section. Never operate the

calibration setup without solid grounding.

Checking the Capacitor Pressure

2 Checking the Capacitor Pressure

Before operating CP CAL1 with high voltages it is recommended to check the gas pressure in the reference capacitor. Check the pressure by looking into the transparent window on the opposite of the banana plug connectors (C1, C2, C3, EG) and take a reading as shown in Figure 2-1: ”Checking the capacitor pressure” below. If the pressure is less than 4 atm (bar), do not use the calibration voltage higher than 3 kV.

4 Calibration Procedure

CP TD1 measures the capacitance and dissipation factor of the test object. You can calibrate/recalibrate CP TD1 by measuring the known capacitance and dissipation factor of the CP CAL1’s reference capacitor given in the Calibration Report attached. The calibration procedure is controlled by CPC 100.

4.1 Settings

4.1.1 Main Window

After connecting CPC 100, CP TD1 and CP CAL1 as described above, switch on CPC 100 by the main power switch and select the TanDelta test card. The TanDelta main window opens.

Figure 4-1:

Main window

In the TanDelta main window, make the following settings:

1. Select the test voltage.The recommended values are 3000 V and 10000 V.

2. Select the test frequency. The recommended value is 55 Hz.

3. Select the mode UST-A for measuring with the connector C1.

4. Select the measurement bandwidth ± 5 Hz for the best selectivity.

5. Set the averaging factor to 20.

6. Select the measurement mode Cp, DF(tanδ).

4.2 Calibrating/Recalibrating CP TD1

Caution: Before starting the calibration/recalibration, make sure that the

dangerous zone is protected against entering.

Using the calibration setup and the settings made you can calibrate and recalibrate (adjust) the CP TD1 test system.

4.2.3 Calibration

To calibrate CP TD1:

1. Compensate for the ambient temperature (see 4.3 ”Temperature Compensation” on page 25).

2. Measure the capacitance (Cp) and dissipation factor (DF) values by pressing the I/O button on the CPC 100’s front panel.A single measurement takes about 50 s.

3. To increase the calibration accuracy by averaging the results of multiple measurements, enter the number of measurements in the ∅ text box in the main window and press the I/O button on the CPC 100’s front panel. After the measurements are completed, the average values are displayed.

4. If you want to average more measurements than the maximum number allowed in the ∅ text box, save multiple results by pressing the Keep Result button and calculate the average values from the data displayed.

5. Compare the measured values with the reference values of your CP CAL1 for the ambient temperature.

4.2.4 Recalibration

If the capacitance differs by less than 100 ppm or the dissipation factor differs by less than and 0.005% (e.g. at 3 kV/95 Hz) from the reference values, you do not need to recalibrate CP TD1. Otherwise, proceed as follows.

Note: If you have recalibrated your CP TD1 test system, the factory

calibration is not more valid. In this case you are responsible for the

accuracy of your CP TD1.

To recalibrate (adjust) CP TD1:

1. Compensate for the ambient temperature (see 4.3 ”Temperature Compensation” on page 25).

2. Measure the Cp and DF values by pressing the I/O button on the CPC 100’s front panel.

3. Optionally, make multiple measurements and calculate average values as described in 4.2.3 ”Calibration” above.

Page 25: User Manualuserequip.com/files/specs/6023/CPCAL1 AE 1.pdf · 2016. 8. 29. · Before operating the CPC 100 and CP TD1 units, read the safety instructions in the CPC 100 User Manual.

25

Calibration Procedure

4. Calculate the following values:Cx = Cref/CpDF/PF+ = DFref – DFwhere Cp and DF are the measured capacitance and dissipation factor respectively and Cref and DFref are the respective reference values of your CP CAL1 for the ambient temperature.

5. Press the Settings button to open the Settings window.

6. Press the Edit Calib. button to enable the Cx and DF/PF+ text boxes.

7. Enter the calculated Cx and DF/PF+ values in the Cx and DF/PF+ text boxes.

8. Enter your name in the by: text box.

9. Press the Update Calib. button.

4.3 Temperature Compensation

The capacitance of the reference capacitor is temperature dependent. The data for your CP CAL1 calibration unit given in the Calibration Report attached refer to the temperature of 20ºC. To obtain accurate results, calibrate with CP CAL1 in a room with constant temperature and compensate for the ambient temperature as follows:

1. After approx. four hours of heat exchange measure the ambient temperature. It is recommended to use the optional device TH 3631 supplied by OMICRON (see Figure 4-3: ”Optional device TH 3631 for measuring ambient temperature” below).

2. Calculate the reference value Cref of your CP CAL1 for the ambient temperature as follows:Cref = Cref20×[1 + Tc×(T – 20)]where Tc = 24 ppm/ºC is the temperature coefficientand T is the ambient temperature in ºC.
