UN organ i.e. Economic and Social Council urged the need of Protecting Consumers in 1976s.

As a result, the UN came out with Guidelines for Consumers’ Protection by Consensus on 9th April, 1985.

So Indian Parliament came up with Consumer Protection Act 1986.

In the past, consumer was considered supreme and occupied a central position in the economy.

Due to advancement of economy, increasing liberalization and technological advancement, the focus of giant corporate philosophy has gradually shifted from consumer to profit at any cost, reducing the concept of consumer sovereignty.

Through effective and efficient implementation of consumer law the quality of services affecting the consumers’ rights and interest may be improved to a considerable extent.

In this way the concept of good governance in public service providers can be guaranteed.
