Establish Effective Data Governance An effective data governance strategy requires thorough planning and rigorous control. Project Description Organizations are consistently relying on data to inform their decisions. Without clear data, they are bound to make poor decisions that will negatively impact the health of the organization. In order for organizations to benefit from their data, they must start treating their data as an asset. Organizations need to implement a strategic data governance program to effectively manage and control the people, processes, and technology across varying lines of the business. Problem Description As a CIO, I am currently experiencing pains from the lack of consistent, reliable, and repeatable data. This is negatively impacting our decision making. The IT organization is in need of a data governance program to enhance the degree of trust we have in our data, generating clarity and confidence in the decisions we make. A successful data governance program calls for a balance between planning and control activities. Getting business buy-in and stakeholder support is difficult in any data governance program. Measurements are key to demonstrating the value of data governance in the enterprise. The value can be measured most effectively when you focus on the business processes, decisions, and interactions that the data is enabling. Establishing data governance roles and responsibilities is half the battle. There need to be control mechanisms in place to monitor the performance of these roles and ensure responsibilities are being carried out.
