Container condition requirement for the live fisheries
A 40 foot shipping container will be used for the shipment. In the case of live fish
handling, fish should be first conditioned in a container with clean water, while the
damaged, sick and dead fish are removed. All the fisheries should be put to starve and,
if possible, water temperature is reduced in order to reduce metabolic rates and make
fish less active. Low metabolic rates decrease the fouling of water with ammonia,
nitrite and carbon dioxide that are toxic to fish and impair their ability to extract
oxygen from water. Such toxic substances will tend to increase mortality rates. Less
active fish allow for an increase in the packing density of fish in the container. This 40
foot container will be 39'4" long, 7'6" tall, and 7'8" wide inside. The container should
be able to hold 2261 cubic feet of area. That is about 84 cubic yards. It must hold up
to 22 tons of fishes.
Shipment and handling process requirement
The shipment will be by water transport. All the containers must be heavily sealed to
avoid damages. The containers will be loaded in large ships which will arrive at the
port of Uruguay by the mentioned deadline. Any arrival after the deadline will not be
accepted and returned from the port without payment.
Veterinary Checks
Animal products imported from other countries to Uruguay are subject to veterinary
checks. This means that those checks are also applicable for the fish preserves which
will be imported Into Uruguay.
These checks relate to:
The documents presented on importation
A comparison between the documents and the actual goods Physical checks on the condition of the goods (organoleptic and analytic)
Freight and insurance costs from the Jamaica to the first point of entry in the
customs territory of the Uruguay port.
It is not allowed to import live fish preserves from countries and factories if they are
not authorized by the Import authority of Uruguay.
