1 Brief geological conditions
Upstream from the proposed damsite in Þjórsá (at the upstream end of the rapids at Þjótandi) the Þjórsá river flows along relatively flat area from 44 m a.s.l. until the next rapids exist at 54 m a.s.l. some 15 km upstream, where the island Árnes is splitting the river into two major channels. The river flows in a braided sandy channels along relatively flat area near the eastern margin of the extensive Þjórsá lava, which covers the lowland in the Skeið area along the west bank of the river. The east bank of the river is highly affected by the hummocky landscape of the old Pleistocene bedrock found discontinuously along the bank.
2 Investigations
The investigations described here were carried out on behalf of Landsvirkjun during spring 2002. The investigation layout was designed by the engineering consultants Hnit and Sweco Internatinal AB. Jarðfræðistofan (JFS Geological services) carried out the investigations as their subcontractor. Ræktunarsamband Flóa og Skeiða performed the percussion drilling.
The investigations in the river-bed of Þjórsá was made using two kinds of drilling methods, making very different capabilities of penetrating the sediments.
Firstly light Cobra percussion drilling (approx 30 kg vibrating hammer drilling with 25 mm steel rods), 53 holes with a total of 250 drilling meters.
Secondly rotary and percussion drilling using 22 tons drill rig with rotary drill bit of 62 mm and thrust of approx. 5 tons and additional percussion hammering where considered acceptable and convenient, 20 holes with a total of 150 m.
For convenience the research area will be divided into three parts as shown on Drawings 1 and 2.
2.1 Area 1
The upstream part from Árnes to Kaldárholt. All investigations were made on the west bank of the river.
As the velocity of the river decreases from the rapids at Árnes in the upstream end, the most coarse grained material is found there as gravel and sandy gravel with grain size up to some 100 mm in "former river channels" of high velocity. The main fraction of grain size seems to be sand with pebbles up to 50 mm.
Rotary and percussion drilling (holes ULO 56 through ULO-71) shows generally approx. 5 m thick layer of loose material supposedly sandy gravel. Few cobra boreholes were drilled in the downstream part of this area (UC-43 through UC-46) showing very similar results as the rotary drilling or 5-7 m thick loose sediments.
2.2 Area 2
The middle part of the area, from the alluvium north of Kaldárholt towards Blesastaðir. This area was investigated with cobra drilling on the east bank and both cobra and rotary drilling on the west bank. The sandy gravel is generally more fine grained than in Part 1 and lower ratio of pebbles (10-30%), seldom exceeding 3-5 cm in diameter. As elsewhere the coarse
___________________________________________________________________________________________ Jarðfræðistofan ehf 2002 3 Urriðafoss Hydroelectric Project
grained material is mainly confined to lenses and layers in former channels of higher velocity on the river.
East bank. Cobra boreholes UC-16 through UC-33, located in this part show approx. 5 m thickness of loose sediments (depth varying between 4,5-6 m).
West bank. Cobra boreholes UC-34 through UC-42 and UC-49 through UC-53 are within this area in addition to percussion holes ULO-72 through ULO-75. The cobra holes show 4-6 m thick loose sediments but the percussion drilling shows approx. 7 m thickness, possibly mixed with some larger stones at the base. Further below there is higher resistance probably in the top scoria of the Þjórsá lava mixed with sand.
2.3 Area 3
The downstream part of the area was investigated with Cobra boreholes UC-1 through UC-15 on the east bank. The sediments on the surface is mainly sand with scattered small pebbles and channels of sandy fine grained gravel.
These cobra holes show 3-5 m thick loose sediments of sand and sandy gravel. Usually the drilling stopped slowly on some semi-hardened material. One hole reached almost 7 m depth. In addition four percussion holes ULO-30 through ULO-33 were drilled further downstream near Kálfhóll on the west bank in the spring 2001. Three holes showed 3,5 - 7 m thick sediments but hole ULO-32, (probably near the eastern margin of the Þjórsá lava) reached almost 9 m depth without touching harder material.
3 Conclusion
Drilling has revealed mainly 5 m thick sediments, resting on some harder irregular base. The alluvium shows some grading in grain size from more coarse grained gravely sand in the uppermost part to sandy fine grained gravel in the downstream part. Groundwater level is very close to the surface. The sediments are easily excavatable and based on visual grain sizes, probably most of it could be pumped. If excavated by pumping, further investigations are needed to verify grain size distribution.
