About the city

Hyderabad is the combined capital city of two states Telangana and

Andhra Pradesh spread across an area of 625 square kilometer

The civic administration and infrastructure development in the city is

being taken care by the municipal authority of the city GHMC (erstwhile

MCH). The scope for expansion and further development of the city has

given rise to several urban planning authorities which were formed

individually and later merged to form a single authority called HMDA

(erstwhile HUDA)

Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA)

In order to develop the metropolitan area of Hyderabad which was known as the

Hyderabad Development Area HDA , a constitutional body Hyderabad Urban

Development Authority HUDA was formed under the Andhra Pradesh Urban

(Dev.) Act 1975. HUDA s jurisdiction extended over an area of 1,348 square

kilometer, which includes entire area covered under MCH, 10 surrounding

municipalities of Ranga Reddy, Medak districts and vast area under gram

panchayats. HUDA mainly focuses on the planning and development of the area

under its jurisdiction. Layout developments, Group Housing Schemes, all non-

residential permissions etc. were the powers vested with HUDA. It also prepared

Master plans, Zonal Development plans for areas under its jurisdiction, give

approval for land utilization for various use premises, layout approvals, propose

urban development projects and execute such projects directly or through the local

authority

Special Development Authority (SDAs)

Special Development Authorities were formed especially to help selected

areas in the existing jurisdiction of urban development authority, which

required special planning controls and a high level of infrastructure and

managerial input. Likely Hyderabad include 3 such SDAs

Buddha Purnima Project Authority (BPPA)

BPPA was formed in 2000 for the development of Hussain Sagar Lake and its

environs covering an area of 902 hectors. The plan was to make the area best

tourist spot with theme parks, recreational spots, water sports, etc. The

recreational pockets covered under this project are Lumbini park, NTR

Memorial, NTR Garden, Necklace Road, Peoples Plaza, Sanjeevaiah Park, Lake

View Park, P.V. Gyan Bhoomi etc.

Hyderabad Airport Development Authority (HADA)

With the proposal to establish an International Airport at Shamshabad, the

state government in 2001, declared a plan to promote and secure planned

development of the areas in and around the airport. It constituted a statutory

authority named Hyderabad Airport Development Authority (HADA) for this

purpose. The jurisdiction of HADA extends to an area of 458 square kilometer

including 70 revenue villages and 19 hamlets in Ranga Reddy District.

Cyberabad Development Authority (CDA)

CDA was formed in the year 2001, for the effective development of the areas

around the HITEC City and surroundings. It broadly covers an area of 52 square

kilometer consisting of 17 revenue villages from Serilingampally Municipality

and Manikonda Jagir Gram Panchayat.

Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA)

HMDA is an urban planning body formed in the year 2008 upon merging of

the erstwhile HUDA, BPPA, HADA, and CDA. It covers an area of 7,100 square

kilometer being the 2nd largest urban development area in India, after

Bangalore Metropolitan Region development, which is spread across an area

of 8,022 square kilometer. HMDA is a high power body chaired by chief

Minister of Telangana. HMDA undertakes planning, co-ordination,

supervising, promoting and securing the planned development of the

Hyderabad Metropolitan Region.
