Note from the Editors

SEP-OCT 2009 | VOL. 1 NO. 3 Our mom, Dolly, married our father at age 24, gave birth to

our eldest sister soon after, then went on to give birth 4 more times in a span of 6 years, before giving birth to the two of us, the 6th and 7th in our brood. Phew! Now that we are mothers ourselves, we can only imagine how she was able

to handle facing natural labor 7 times, lived in maternity clothes for almost the first decade of her married life, raised 7 babies almost consecutively, and still come out of it, sanity-intact, smile on her face, even graceful and grateful.

We would love to hear from you...Send us your comments about Urban Mom Magazine and get a chance to win a BLOW UP BABIES GIFT CERTIFICATE for a 1-hour photo session and 1 5R Print. Email your comments to [email protected].

Congratulations to Glenda who wins a MESSY BESSY GIFT PACK!

MARICEL LAXA-PANGILINAN ON HER NEW ROLE AS ASPIRING TRIATHLETE AND HOW HER LIFE AS AN ACTIVE MOM HAS CHANGED HER FAMILY.

It was during the early nineties when Maricel Laxa became a household name. Due in part to her showbiz pedigree (being the daughter of screen luminaries Tony Ferrer and Imelda Ilanan) and her lithe morena beauty, Maricel was one most sought-after leading lady when the decade ushered in.

to what they need and be attuned to how they are growing up. The bond becomes stronger if a parent listens instead of merely imposing.

It goes without saying that family bonding requires a lot of energy, but the Pangilinan family has gotten into triathlon as their current family bonding activity. It all started when husband Anthony, inspired by Ayala Corporation President Fernando Zobel de Ayala, did his first triathlon late last year. Anthony got hooked and took the

In 1993, Maricel’s marriage to then TV show host and businessman Anthony Pangilinan opened more roles – wife, mother, and parenting advocate.

“As a child, I always dreamed of marrying my prince, having children and living happily ever after,” she shares. “When I settled down with my husband, I was at the top of my career and in love with the love of my life, so I pursued a new career - one which I had always dreamed of.”

But Maricel is far from being “settled,” in the strictest sense of the word. In fact, she is actually quite restless – apart from being a wife, mother, and actress, she also writes a column for the Philippine Star and lobbies parenting advocacy. Maricel is also one of those who mounted the Philippine parenting conventions along with the Department of Education. They help inspire 5,000 youth leaders yearly and train parents along with nannies to bring up their children properly. “Our goal is to have 10 out of10 children looking up to their parents as role models,” Maricel relates. “Right now, statistics show only 2 out of10 children look up to their parents as role models because the youth look up to media as their number one influencer.”

Maricel is a very hands-on mother to four children, with the eldest entering her teens. Each day is a learning experience with them, “I love being my children’s mom. They bring out the best and yes, sometimes the worst in me - bringing them up has expanded my world and has allowed me to be changed in so many good ways,” she says. Clearly, Maricel’s openness to her kids’ experiences allows her to be able to listen

kids along to dabble into swimming, cycling, and running since he didn’t want to make triathlon as

time away from them. Maricel eventually did her first triathlon last June as she felt a little left out when she saw the kids greatly enjoying their tri time with their Dad.

“I have been enjoying my time just bonding with my husband. While my primary goal is to be his dakilang alalay, it wouldn’t hurt to get fit while I wipe his sweat,” she chuckles. “When Anthony got our kids involved, aba - that was a different story, I was left out and after a while I couldn’t stand being around so much expensive gear in our dining

room, everywhere, so I tried to make them useful by trying them and I enjoyed my time - that was it!”

It also helped that Maricel was a very active athlete back in her younger years. She even made it to the swim team when she went to the United States for high school and even did some cross-country running. Her love for sports and adventure extended to her children, albeit inadvertently. Bonding with the kids meant spending time outdoors rather than vegging in front of the TV.

Maricel’s restlessness, energy, and openness are qualities a mother in these times should have. “We like to have laid-back lives in these fast-paced times because we want to enjoy each other as much as we can,” she quips.

Maricel may be the talented actress to the public, but her newfound role as a fit and active mother promises more exciting adventures with her family. She is proof that moms do not have to stay by the sidelines – she can cheer them on, as she runs alongside them. There are no cut scenes to this, at least not in Maricel’s screenplay.”
