Note from the Editors

JUL-AUG 2009 | VOL. 1 NO. 2

Our mom, Dolly, married our father at age 24, gave birth to our eldest sister soon after, then went on to give birth 4

more times in a span of 6 years, before giving birth to the two of us, the 6th and 7th in our brood. Phew! Now that we are mothers ourselves, we can only imagine how she was able to handle facing natural labor 7 times, lived in maternity clothes for almost the first decade of her married life, raised 7 babies almost consecutively, and still come out of it, sanity-intact, smile on her face, even graceful and grateful.

While we are happy for now, with the children we have, and will most probably not follow in our mom’s fabulously fertile footsteps, we created this issue with expectant and new moms in mind. We feature infanticipating mom, Daphne Oseña-Paez on the cover and showcase our fave finds for baby’s nursery on page 10.

This issue of Urban Mom is dedicated to all moms-to-be, whether on their first (or their seventh!) pregnancy. We wish you a smooth and easy delivery, and a happy, healthy baby!

WHEN DAPHNE OSEñA-PAEz FIRST ENTERED THE PHILIPPINE broadcast industry during the late nineties, her penchant for

artistry and style made her a fitting co-host of a top-rating television show on fashion and beauty. Since then, Daphne became a constant fixture on TV, gracing talk shows and magazine programs with her impeccable taste in design and fashion. However, after she settled down with Patrick Paez and became a mother to Sophia and Lily, Daphne took big steps to accommodate both her career and family.

“My work is important to me but my family takes priority all the time. In fact I have purposely redesigned my career so that I could slow down on broadcasting and focus more on my little enterprises and work from home,” she confides. Daphne now directs her creative energies on Urban zone, a show she proudly co-produces with her husband.

Besides this, she is passionate about design,

particularly jewelry and bed linen. Currently, Daphne is experimenting with 14k gold and silver and reworking antique pieces like brooches, pendants and chains, into something more modern and chic. “I also pursued jewelry design further. I’m still waiting for the chance – time permitting – to study gemology,” Daphne says.

The bedsheet line is, according to Daphne, her “newest baby.” These are currently available at Our Home. “The Daphne Linens are all 100% cotton and a minimum of 380 threadcount. What I’m offering is not just good design but a luxurious experience as well,” she shares.

How Daphne juxtaposes fashion, design and urban living altogether is due in part to her degree in Urban Studies and Fine Art History. Doing all of these creative ventures enables her to enjoy what she does, leaving her with more than enough time and energy to spend quality time with her daughters and husband.

As of this writing, Daphne is pregnant with her third child, and is bound to give birth during the first week of August. “It’s a big step from having

two kids to three. But being the “experienced” mom that I am, I now know what I really need and what I don’t,” she says. Her daughters are equally excited, that six year-old Sophia has declared herself the “yaya of the baby” and two year-old Lily a proud “baby ate.”

With all the help Daphne is getting, especially from a supportive husband like Patrick and eager daughters ready to help care for the new baby, she gets the liberty to embark on her little enterprises. However, Daphne is not one to overload herself with gratuitous tasks.

“As moms we try our best to multitask and get everything done in a day. But I also know that its not possible to do everything equally well. So I make lists and prioritize what needs to be done that day. I also make sure that I am always present at home, even if we do not do traditional action-packed bonding moments. I could be in the computer doing work while the girls are playing with their dolls and crafts in the same room. It’s important for children to know and feel their mom is present in their lives.”

What makes Daphne an exemplary urban mother is her ability to find serenity amidst a fast-paced environment. Broadcasting is a rigorous discipline, yet working on a subject of great interest to her lightens up the load, and eventually becomes a work of leisure. That, and knowing what she can – or cannot – do.

Her advice to fellow urban mothers who are finding their personal nirvana amidst work and family: “Don’t try to be a supermom. It’s not possible to have everything. Something or someone is bound to suffer. Just enjoy the ride and don’t forget that little moments make up big memories in the future. And lastly but most important, if you’re married, don’t forget your husband. Prioritize him. I’m a firm believer that a happy home makes happy children. If they see that you and your husband are happy and in love, they will grow up with confidence and lots of love.”d

A fruit snack, wipes, and all-natural insect repellent. My baby’s first trip was 8. to Boracay, at seven months old. Involve your child in the things you do from your work, to running errands, and doing household chores. Take the time to explain why you do the things you do. Don’t underestimate their ability to understand.
