Welcome to our Fall Sixth-Year Edition! This issue is yet another issue filled to the brim with local companies bringing their message and business valley-wide. Autumn is in the air and it’s also in “The Urban Liaison Magazine,” so please sit back, relax, and read through our valley’s local storybook. You will learn some new information and understand your valley even more.

As you read, the stories and check out the ads, please remember why, after six years, the magazine is still being created and published. It’s still in print because of the importance of the Buy Local and Support Local Lifestyle Movement.

In this issue, we showcase some wonderful local restaurants. Eating local is so important to our residential food producers and our local economy. Are the restaurants you frequent using locally grown food? There are many locally owned restaurants in our valley, making it a mission to use as many local food options as possible. Another new section is sponsored by Sysco, and In our “Foodies Section” we will be covering “Local Neighborhoods and Their Food Print.”

In this issue, it’s all about the Hyde Park area. We also have a lovely story on the Boise Co-op Wine Shop. Again, going with the local theme here, the wines in Idaho are simply delicious. Let’s support them and buy local wine! We highlight Huston Vineyards in this issue, too, and oh my gosh… their wine is some of the best I have ever had.

Our cover models are the owners of V3 Hair Studio, Danae and Victor. They have been advertising partners with “The Urban Liaison” for over six years now and have done so many things to help our valley whilst donating tons of time in service. I am grateful to them and all of our advertising partners; they are the ones helping us cover the costs to make this a free publication.

Our holiday issue will be out before Thanksgiving and will be full of local opportunities for you to support the local this holiday season. Thank you for picking up the magazine and for supporting local as much as you can.

Blessings,

Cheryl

Here are a few tips to help shift your focus and achieve the body, health,

and life you desire:

WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS: The more specific the better. However,

remember to state them in a manner that describes what you want to happen. For example: “I want to lose 20 lbs in 6 months,” “I want to lower my blood pres-sure to 120/80 or less by next year,” “I want to fit into my old swimsuit by June,” “I want to improve my flexibility so I will feel better.”

CREATE YOUR VISION: More specifi-cally, create a poster board of what

you want your life to look like. Find pictures of yourself when you were looking and feeling your best. Do you have fitness goals like running a marathon or compet-ing in a triathlon? Maybe you want to take on new recreational hobbies like rock climbing or martial arts? Find images of these activities and put them on the board! You could even go beyond fitness with your vision. Images of places you want to go on vacation, a certain vehicle you like, the amount of income or job you desire—the sky is the limit. This is a power-ful tool. Having an image to view daily naturally puts your subconscious to work to-wards your goals. Try it…you’ll be amazed at how effective it is!

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE INFLUENCES: Post inspirational quotes

throughout your work and home space, read self-improvement books, write daily affirmations, and surround yourself with positive people who mutually want you to succeed. Remember: positive attracts more positive.

WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE IN 30 DAYS? If you make a daily commit-

ment to perform these three action steps, you will be amazed how much better you will look and feel. Everything will seem like it’s naturally falling into place. It’s your life! Take control, take action, and become the person that you truly deserve to be.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE?ith 70% of the American population being overweight and/or obese it shouldn’t come as any shock that countless people want to improve their health and maybe shed a few pounds.

Obviously, changes need to be made regarding diet and exercise, but one area that is often over-looked is a person’s mindset. Believing ultimately can make or break one’s success. We see this all the time in professional sports, business, and even fitness.

Having a vision for what needs to be accom-plished, the drive to achieve greatness, and most importantly, believing is critical. Henry Ford says it best: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” Simple and true. The battle is won or lost long before you even set foot in the gym, but it’s a little more than just belief—you have to shift to a mindset of “positive outcome.” In other words, focusing on what is desired opposed to what is undesired. Esther and Jerry Hicks, authors of The Law of Attraction look at it from this perspective:

From your place of lack, you will attract only more of that, and that is the reason most diets do not work: You are aware of your fat—you are aware of your body looking the way you do not want it to look—and so when it gets bad enough that you cannot stand it anymore (either from your own per-spective or because others are scowling at you), then you say, “I can’t bear this nega-tive place anymore. I’m going to go on a diet, and I’m going to get rid of all this stuff that I do not want.” And yet, your attention is given to the stuff that you do not want, and so you hold it to you. The way to get to where you want to be is to give your full attention to what you do want, not to give your attention to what you do not want.”

By overly examining what you do not like about your body and/or physical health only perpetu-ates the problem. There needs to be a paradigm shift for true change to take place. You need to “believe it before you see it.” How is that possible, Jason? I look in the mirror and the mirror doesn’t lie! I realize that we live in a society of “seeing is believing,” but I simply encourage you to reflect for a moment on everything that has changed in the world throughout your lifetime.

Fairly recently, we didn’t have cell phones, inter-net, iPads, etc. Even television hasn’t been in exis-tence for 100 years! The bottom line is that people have vision and the ability to believe it before they see it. The same rule applies when it comes to our bodies and physical health, and the body will go only as far as your mind will allow it to.

END OF LIFE MADE EASIERHospice Information for the Treasure Valley

Dr. Jonathan Chu is a true gift to Nampa. He is the Medical Director for Harrison’s Hope Hospice and has practiced medicine in the Treasure Valley since 1989. After 21 years of family practice in Nampa, Dr. Chu’s passion for helping patients with life-limiting illness brought him to Harrison’s Hope to work in hospice full time. Although he was and is one of the most recognized and respected doctors in Nampa, he shut down

Dr. Chu was recently awarded the “Hos-pice Physician of the Year Award” in 2013 by the Idaho Quality of Life Coalition. He was also a nalist for the “Excellence in Leadership” award given by the Nampa Chamber of Commerce each year at the Nampa Chamber’s Evening Of Excellence event. When he’s not practicing medicine, Dr. Chu spends his time cycyling and enjoying the Valley’s beautiful scenery.

one of Harrison’s Hope’ patients face to face. Our patients and their families are known and cared for by Dr. Chu. They get to meet with him, ask questions, and interact with him. To Dr. Chu, his patients are real people with real needs, not just names on a piece of paper. His level of understanding regarding pain management and end of life care makes him an asset to his patients, their families, our Hospice team, and the Treasure Valley.

his practice in 2008 to become a twenty-four-hour-a-day hospice clinician because he saw the value and importance of end of life care after providing care for his own wife during her last months of life. This caused him to look at and approach death die-rently, so he made a decision to devote his life to end of life care and hasn’t looked back ever since. Although he isn’t required to by regulation, Dr. Chu prefers to visit each one

Medical Director for Harrison’s Hope I have the freedom to give our patients as much time as they feel they need. I am 100% dedicated to hospice and end of life care. All of Harrison’s Hope patients get the benet of personal visits by me to listen to their concerns and address the issues they are facing in their nal journey of life. As you know, near end of life it becomes very dicult, if not impossible for the patient and their family to make it to the clinic for their appointments. In my role, I help alleviate that distress- I go to them.

Maintaining multiple physician appointments while in the midst of a serious illness is both exhausting and stressful for patients and families. End of life is mostly unpredictable and needing to get help can come unexpectedly. Calling to make an appointment to see the physician is sometimes weeks away. The ER becomes the only answer even if the ER can do nothing for the patient.

This is very common and I feel that patients and families need to know that they have other options. In a world where physicians are very busy in the clinic and the ER is discouraging, Harrison’s Hope has a solution: Dr. Jonathan Chu, MD. He is Harrison’s Hope Hospice’s full time Medical Director.

Dr. Chu became a physician in 1989. He started his practice in Nampa at Family Medical Clinic that eventually came to be known as St. Al’s Medical Clinic on Iowa Street. Dr. Chu had taken care of patients at that clinic for 19 years but in 2010 Dr. Chu decided it was time for a change in tactics. He states that the pressures of a very busy clinical practice left him feeling unsatised and did not allow him the time he felt the patients deserved.

“Harrison’s Hope as an organization is truly about patient care. Patients and families really do come rst. Community outreach, education, and involvement are at the top of our Mission, Vision, and Culture. This is what attracted me to Harrison’s Hope and after testing the waters I decided that it was something I wanted to be a part of” Chu said. “I want to be a hands on physician. Working full time for Harrison’s Hope allows me to make home visits as often as I would like, sitting at bedside with dying patients and helping families with their struggles. I did not want to be a hands o hospice physician signing medical records and orders as needed and showing up 2 times a month for team meetings. I want to remain engaged with patients and families and provide them with hands on care. Harrison’s Hope allows me to be this type of physician. Many of my colleagues have asked me if doing hospice full time is depressing and hard. My answer is no because I never viewed death as the enemy. It is just a part of life and I know I can make a dierence and that makes it very rewarding for me.”

Dr. Chu feels hospice is a calling. It is a very personal choice for him. In 2004 his wife Jan was diagnosed with Pancre-atic Cancer. Ultimately they were both aware that they could ght some battles with this disease but in the end they would not win the war. Jan died on January 7th, 2007 at home with her husband as her primary caregiver.

“Having her at home and keeping her comfortable with all of her friends around her saying their good-byes was her style.”

In a valley with many choices for hospice care, it is very important that you ask the question, “Can I have a home visit from the hospice physician and how often?”

You know you have a great hospice on-board when they answer, “Yes, the doctor will be there as often as needed, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.”

If you or a loved one are experiencing a decline or facing end of life and would like to meet Dr. Chu, please call him at 208-947-6800.

When I walked into the acupuncturist’s office that first day, I had no idea how my life path would be so influenced. The smells of the liniments, the herbs and the moxa were intoxicating to me. The client intake was unlike any other I’d ever filled out. She wanted to know about things I never would have related to pain.. like my digestion. I was a young woman realizing that my body systems were all related and interconnected and my whole life was about to change. Working with her, my year long pain was gone in a few weeks. She gave me respon-sibilities and assignments – like soups to make with ingredients that to me at the time seemed very exotic (they weren’t but they were not part of my daily life). I was so intrigued and enthusiastic about learning more. I worked for her for several years and at the same time, I enrolled in an acupunc-ture school in Miami, Florida. I received a Masters Level education, which included acupuncture, plus anatomy and

physiology, homeopathy, shiatsu, nutrition, pharmacology and herbs.

My training continued, incorporating other modalities throughout the years, after my husband and I started a family. Being the mother of two girls has given me real life application and prompted me to learn more along the way. Healing my own family has lead me to become knowledgeable in food interol-erances and allergy issues, Hashimotos, Functional and Biological dentistry, Func-tional Medicine and healing through food by incorporating guidelines of Weston A Price Foundation, Paleo and Gaps Diets. As a member of Meridian Family acupunc-ture, I am able to treat my clients holistically. I not only treat the issue, but I search out and treat the root cause. Acupuncture has treated the mind, body and spirit for over 2500 years.

What can acupuncture do for you?

I was 18 years old when I became aware of acupuncture and Eastern medicine. My roommate, whom I had known to have daily chronic pain issues came home one day with a zing in her step and flowers in her hand. I was so astounded by her sudden turnaround, I remember it as if it were yesterday. When I asked her what she did, she said “acupuncture”. Within a few days I was seeing her acupuncturist for my own pain issues.

SET AN EXAMPLE: "Kids model their parents—they learn healthy, as well as unhealthy, behaviors from watching us. If you eat right and increase your activ-ity levels, they will follow your lead.

SET GOALS: Don't focus on weight loss. Instead, have everyone agree to specific daily goals, such as recording a certain number of steps on a pedom-eter. Charts or goal boards are useful tools to track progress.

USE NONEDIBLE WEEKLY REWARDS. A small gift or fun reward as a family (i.e. movie night)—will help reinforce good behavior. Celebrate each other’s suc-cess!

SIT DOWN FOR A FAMILY DINNER: Kids who do this the majority of the time are a third less likely to be overweight than children who never eat dinner with their families.

GET RID OF THE JUNK! Clean out your pantry and fridge and get rid of every-thing that doesn’t support your new healthy lifestyle. Stock up on all your favorite healthier snacks.

PLANNING IS EVERYTHING. Involve the whole family in planning healthy meals. Have your kids help you prep veggies and healthy snacks into individual serv-ings with zip lock bags or containers. Make sure that these healthy snacks are in a visible, convenient spot so ev-eryone can grab and go when things get hectic.

EAT BREAKFAST EVERY DAY. Start your day off with a balanced breakfast including protein.

SMALL, FREQUENT MEALS. For best results, eat three meals a day with snacks in- be-tween. This helps to keep your metabo-lism working efficiently and maintains healthy blood sugar levels. Each meal should contain a balance of protein, healthy starches, and vegetables.

LEARN ABOUT HEALTHY PORTION SIZES. A rule of thumb for an adult is three ounces of protein (size of the palm of your hand), one cup of vegetables, and a half cup of starch. I like to have my clients divide their plates by filling half the plate with veggies, ¼ protein, and ¼ with their starch.

MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FAMILY WEIGHT LOSS PLAN INCLUDES AN EXERCISE REGIMEN. Take regular walks, bike rides, or join a gym. Not only will this make your weight loss efforts easier, but it will help bring you together as a family.

WEIGHT LOSS A FAMILY SOLUTIONWith childhood obesity on the rise at an alarming rate, now is the time for par-ents to take action! We need to realize that our children’s habits are directly in-

fluenced by us. If you are like a lot of my clients, you’re not sure where to start… so, here are ten simple ways that you can incorporate new, healthier habits into

your day to day routine. Involve the whole family and make it fun!

We have lost a combination of 90 lbs in 4 months. It has been the easiest and most rewarding program we have tried because we eat our own food

and we are never hungry. Our 3 kids are benefiting too from our improved diet and exercise program.

We all feel better about ourselves as a whole and in-dividually. We talk about how this isn't a "diet" but a lifestyle. I'm very proud of all of us and happy that we are setting a good example for our kids so they can

pass it on to their kids someday. We are so happy to have found Balanced Diet because it

literally has saved all of our lives."

Floatation therapy is about escaping it all. Distilling life down to its absolute essence, where only your mind is present. That can be frightening for those that see “me time” as a method of escaping themselves. Floatation practitioners live in a world that requires no escape. Gary Butterfield said it best in his turn at Tales From the Tank, a regular feature in the Portland Mercury by Float On, “It wasn't about being alone with my thoughts. It was about being alone without them.” With no distractions, it becomes easy to clear out every corner of clutter that has accumulated in day-to-day life. Without that weight, it is easy to step with a lighter bounce.Centers provide this experience with a floatation tank. Tanks commonly have nearly 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt and about 200 gallons of water heated to skin temperature . This solution looks and moves like water, but is so dense people float on top, despite it being only ten inches deep. Center operators will ask that you shower before and after the experience using the provided shower and body wash. Gentle music is the indication that time is up.

Weight loss, relaxation, decreased anxiety, rapid recovery from intense exercise, and better

sleep are just a few of the things people are claiming to get from regular floats. It might be easy to dismiss these as wild claims, but advocates have piles of scientific research to back them up.Imagine spending an hour or two with the one person who is always there—you. This is no common “me time”. It is not you, a bottle of wine, and a good book. Comforting as those “ands” might be, they are an influence. There are also a few other things in that equation—things so comforting or constant that they don’t even register as part of the experience. Some are easy to guess, such as the couch you are sitting on, the phone on the nearby shelf, the weight of a book, the lap blanket providing just the right amount of warmth, or that odd reflection from the TV. There are still more. How about the presence of light itself? The sounds of the neighborhood outside? Even gravity has an impact.

First floats are commonly called a “break-in float”. Getting used to the environment, finding the most comfort-able position, testing the neck pillow, and trusting the host to start that gentle music requires some initial effort. While possible to have an amazing first float, many experience only half of one the first time. Float centers commonly de-fault to a 90-minute float and sell starter packages to overcome this small, up front obstacle. By float three, it is 90 minutes of perfection that carries out for three or more days after the experi-ence. Regular practitioners claim the benefits from a 90-minute float will last for a week or more. That is a week of feeling good with less pain, less anxiety, and better sleep.

Contact Drop of Calm at (208) 352-2256, or visit www.DropOfCalm.com to schedule your first float.

The little girl with much to learn grew into one of the busi-est stylists in the world and has been recognized as one of the top stylists in the country. Danae Valle opened Studio D in 2007 with her husband, Victor, and son, Brit-ton. In January of 2009 Danae was named as Idaho’s Business Woman of the Year Up and Coming by NAWBO. The following year, Studio D received the top service award given in Idaho, the Governor’s Brightest Star Award. The family business moved to the Meridian area and was renamed V3 Hair Studio in 2012, and, this year, is honored as Meridian’s Small Business of the Year. Danae’s love as a mother for her children Alexis, Katie, and Britton far exceeds any recognition she has gained through her business. She is proud to work side by side with her family.

Victor, Danae, and Britton have travelled throughout the US and gained some of the best hair education available. They under-stand the importance that education plays in providing their clients the best service possible. Education has elevated them to become one of the top hair salons in the state. Danae has taught many stylists over years, and many of them have become salon owners, educators, and platform artists. Part of the culture of V3 Hair Studio is to pass on the knowledge freely without expecting anything in return. Stylists have come from all over the West to their salon to receive education in color, cuts, and the business of doing hair. From the moment a guest comes into V3 Hair Studio, they will be greeted by one of Danae’s associates and offered a drink. The associate will sit the guest down and give Danae their formula; they will work with Danae for their personal consultation. Once the color is formulated, the associate will mix it. Danae will apply the color, an associate will shampoo the client, Danae will cut, and finally, the client will be styled by an associate. This allows the team to work together while making the client feel pam-pered (as they should) with any and every salon session. The experience can be compared to what you’d find in high-end salons in cities like New York or Los Angeles, while maintaining that small community charm and warmth.

With an absolute compassion for community and service, V3 has sponsored many charity events, including a fashion show last year that raised over $40,000 for a local women & children’s shelter program. In September of 2012, V3 organized an event called “Healthy You.” This event attracted over 400 guests and raised funds supporting breast cancer research and treatment. The charity within V3 does not only extend to large organiza-tions in the area, but first and foremost to its clients. Inspiring personal relationships with each person served at V3 is apparent to all who walk in the door. An energy of love, compassion, and teamwork is what really makes V3 Hair Studio truly stand out.The V3 team receives world-class training each year from the best in the industry. This year they traveled to Las Vegas for the International Hair Show and also attended a class by Sam Villa, one of the top educators in the world. Danae has person-ally mentored and trained over 30 stylists over the last 4 years.

is Familyis Community

is Qualityis Inspiration

This crucial training gives the V3 stylists the tools they need to perfect the art of hair styling and become truly successful in the industry. V3 finds pride in allowing their stylists to be fashion-forward with access to new products, color, and technique workbooks before they are available to any other salon. They embrace the words of Brent Borrison, “Getting comfort-able with our successes is what keeps us from trying new things,” by encouraging stylists to continue learning and grow-ing by trying new things. V3 hosts platform artists and educa-tors from New York at least twice a year, attends the Redken Symposium every other year, and sends stylists to the Redken Exchange in New York for training. With so much education, there is never an opportunity for the V3 stylists to be bored or mediocre. It’s easy to see that there is such an air of encour-agement and excitement in the salon and between its team members.V3 Hair Studio hosts many teen image nights, has dressed hair for many fashion shows, and works closely with local photographer Alexia Wardell and wardrobe stylist "Fashion Kellie" Levesque to combine creative minds so they can share their artistic vision with the world. With so many ways to be involved, the V3 stylists can’t help but share a deep compassion for service and bettering the community, both in and out of the salon.

Visit V3 and you, too, can experience an atmosphere of love and community, quality hair styling service, education, and culture. Their staff is truly dedicated to excellence in their work and in giving the best to every client that sits in their chair. V3 has proven time after time to be one of the best salons in the Northwest—maybe even the very best in Idaho.

The Village At Meridian

Witches Night Out!

Wednesday, October 2 2 6pm to 8:30pm

year’s event took place just a week after the grand opening, so it was merely a preview of what a real Witches Night Out could be like. But according to Regional Marketing Director, Ramona Merrill, the response last year exceeded expectations. “We wanted to try a couple things right after opening to see what the market responded to,” she said. “We were thrilled to welcome over 300 women in full costume, with many others attending as well. It showed us that the women in the Treasure Valley have a great sense of humor and love an excuse to dress up and have fun!”

This year, the event will take on a meaningful tone. Guests will be invited to buy raffle tickets to win the contents of The Witch’s Wardrobe, a beautiful armoire on loan from Z Gallerie, the Village’s new home furnishings store. The contents will be apparel, gift cards, movie passes, handbags, accesso-ries, and more, all provided by The Village at Meridian Merchants. The value will be a minimum of $1,000. “The donations are still coming in,” said Merrill. “I’m excited to see what we will end up with!”

Last

you ever needed an excuse to gather up some best friends and spend

a night out shopping, snacking, and sipping, the up-coming Witches Night

Out at The Village at Meridian may be just the ticket! Scheduled for Wednesday,

October 22nd from 6 pm-8:30 pm, the evening will include special pricing on

“witchy martinis” and decadently delightful desserts from The Village restaurateurs. While anyone can attend,

the event is expected to draw women and their girlfriends to The Village in droves—and it is all for a good cause.

If proceeds will be shared between two area charities: The Women and Children’s Alliance and the Idaho Humane Society. At first, the connection between the two charities might not be clear, but studies show that pets help women and children affected by domestic abuse heal. They provide comfort and give a sense of normalcy to a difficult transition. Unfortunately, statistics also show that often a beloved family pet might be the reason some women do not seek shelter right away, fearing for the loss of the pet, as most shelters do not provide for them. Understanding both elements of the issue will help find solutions. Both charitable organiza-tions are pleased to be associated with the fundraiser

All and are hoping for a big turnout. “We hope to see this as an annual fundraiser for these organizations,” said Merrill. “I expect it to get more successful every year.”

All combination of harvest decorations, cool weather, and the beauty of The Village setting creates a setting that is pure magic. Roving judges will award prizes for the best costumes, and the stores will offer

specials. So, put on your pointed shoes and green eyelashes, and take your wallet along so you can donate to a good cause, try your luck at winning the Witch’s Wardrobe, and above all, have fun strolling the streets and shops of The Village with your best pals.

It has all the makings of a bewitching evening!

Always having been someone with a strong desire to help people, Martel worked as a drug counselor at a youth facility before deciding that using her psychic abilities would be a better way to make a positive dif-ference in the lives of others.

Going about providing this service proved to be challenging in the begin-ning. First, Martel began selling “Magic Muffins” around Boise, delicious baked goods with a significant word or phrase on a piece of paper placed inside

them. The issue arose that, without a license and com-mercial kitchen, this practice was illegal. However, a kindly city employ-ee advised Martel that giving the muffins away while charging for a reading would be completely lawful.

Magic Muffins be-came a mainstay of Psychic Sheila’s publicity and were given away not only to those who came to her for

readings, but also to radio DJs when

Martel visited to take callers on their shows. Members of the studio audience were also treated to these clairvoyant confections during Martel’s local ac-cess television show.

The term ‘psychic’ conjures up images of dimly lit rooms shroud-ed with draperies and overpow-

ering incense as you are asked to gaze deeply into a crystal ball. Although skepticism and disbelief have become more of a normalcy in today’s culture, there is still something eerily thrilling when a complete stranger reveals information that doesn’t seem possible for them to have known.

The gypsy-like mysticism that many people think of when imagining what a psychic or a reading might be like isn’t quite the case. You won’t be meet-ing Sheila Martel (popularly referred to as Psychic Sheila) in a dreary voodoo lounge when you visit her at the Shuga Shack. Martel is a friendly and welcom-ing person, and the atmosphere at the Shuga Shack is open and comfortable.

The question of how Martel’s talent de-veloped and when she first knew she had psychic ability is not an easy one to answer without a de-tailed and emotional history of family, love and loss. Martel had visions as early as her teens, but didn’t recognize or ac-cept that these were actual premonitions until she was older. Martel was also taught psychometry at a young age, which is touching an object or photograph belonging to the person who is being read to uncover details about them.

Though Psychic Sheila, the Shuga Shack and Magic Muffins have be-come an iconic part of the Boise landscape, there was a brief period where the atmo-sphere was not so accepting. It was brought to atten-tion that, accord-ing to the wording of municipal law, psychic readings were illegal within city limits. Martel devised a campaign to show the faultiness of the trivial law. She performed readings on the street under the guise of taking passersby down “happy trails” and giving them Magic Muffins before telling them that they had taken part in an illegal activ-ity. The law was soon repealed, making Martel’s practices legal.

Martel offers readings, chakra heal-ing, and group meditation sessions at the Shuga Shack and is also available for private parties and events. The Shuga Shack is a place of acceptance and learning and Martel encourages people to come in to open their minds to the psychic powers that are within all humans. Martel can be reached by calling 429-1434 or by visiting the Shuga Shack at 1821 West State Street.

Idaho natives Gregg and Mary Alger did not initially set out to become award-winning

winemakers. With backgrounds in agriculture they pursued the corporate ladders of Fortune 500 companies and then ran a successful B2B office products business. In 2006 they had a

mid-life epiphany. They decided to sell their home in Eagle, sell their company, buy a vineyard and pursue winemaking. Gregg and Mary’s efforts in building Huston Vineyards have put Huston, Idaho on the winemaking map.

After their life-chang-ing decision, Gregg and Mary studied viticulture through the Oregon State University Viti-culture/Enology program. Courses in viticulture pro-vided them with a scientifically based understanding of the interaction between grape production and winemaking. Gregg has sur-rounded himself

with experts in the winemaking industry

and jokes, “I’ve learned by extensive trial and error.”

HustonWine is all about the Experience

Huston Vineyards is located in the Sunny Slope/Snake River Valley. With its rich vol-canic soil and long sunny days the area is conducive to world-class winemaking. In 2008 Huston Vineyards began production of their very first vintage Private Reserve Red. When it was released in 2010 it was the most expensive wine produced in Idaho at the time. That year, the Great Recession began and Gregg and Mary became concerned about the direction they’d chosen. Their concern proved unfounded. Huston’s first premier red wine won gold in the 2010 Idaho Wine Competition. In 2014 their 2013 Riesling also won many awards including gold at the Sunset International Wine competition.

Huston’s Chicken Dinner label comprises 70% of their production and is a perfect everyday table wine at an affordable price. You’ll also want to try Huston’s Reserve Chardonnay, a rich and buttery wine served best with en-trées such as lobster bisque. Huston’s Merlot hints of smoky bacon with black cherry and their Malbec displays flavors of black raspber-ry and plum with a spicy finish.

Gregg feels that life is too short to not sit down and enjoy an amazing glass of wine. His mantra is, “Great wine and great food equal the best of times.” He believes the wine you serve is an extension of the meal you’re preparing and a reflection of the at-mosphere you’re trying to create. The task of finding the right wine to pair with your menu is of equal importance to the meal itself. When asked what is his favorite wine, Gregg replies, “My answer depends on what I’m having for dinner and whom I’m having it with!”

Gregg is a strong advocate for Idaho wine-makers and serves as a commissioner for the Idaho Wine Commission. He hopes Idahoans will support local vintners by buying Idaho wines along with locally sourced meat and produce. Visit Huston Vineyards online (Hus-tonVineyards.com) to learn about upcoming events such as their popular farm-to-table vintner dinners.

If you’re looking for a fun afternoon of wine tasting within a few short miles outside of the Treasure Valley, head toward Huston Vine-yards. Take in the beauty of the Snake River Valley and sample their fabulously luscious, yet traditionally refined award-winning wines.

Muse was initially opened as a small bistro showcasing fresh food, fine wine and integrating fresh goat cheese from the creamery next door. In late spring of 2014, Muse lost its chef and Scott and Chasity decided to temporarily close the restaurant. They realized it was an opportune time to redesign both the interior of the restaurant and Muse’s menu to reflect a more contemporary vibe.

Scott and Chasity Koritansky are seasoned pros when it comes to the food and restaurant business. Scott previously owned restaurants in the eastern part of the country, and they both run a successful Merid-ian eatery, The Varsity Pub. Self-proclaimed foodies, this couple visits Las Vegas every quarter to ensure that they are staying on top of food trends. They then bring their experiences back into the kitchens of their restaurants, staying true to their commitment to food excellence.

Interweaving their own goat cheese into Muse’s menu is a natural ex-tension of their family ties to the dairy industry. Scott’s father is a bovine veterinarian. He also owns a large goat dairy located in Hagerman, Idaho that supplies the milk to the Koritansky‘s for their cheese produc-tion. In addition, Chasity’s father is an animal nutritionist. These two men provide invaluable feedback to the Koritansky’s, helping them create exceptional fresh goats’ milk cheese.

feed that Scott’s father formulated; it is enhanced with Omega-3s. Try one of Muse’s succulent beef dishes such as the grilled filet with kale, butter lettuce, black pepper feta, and smoked almonds with oregano vinaigrette. Your mouth will be delighted and you’ll get the anti-aging and anti-inflammatory health benefits of con-suming Omega-3’s.

Come to Muse during happy hour and cozy up to the outdoor fire-place while savoring an infused Martini or a glass of your favorite wine. Wine lovers will appreciate that Muse offers over 120 hand-picked wine selections. You won’t want to pass up their specialty wine flights. Appropriately crafted after the nine Greek Muses, each of the nine wine flights are showcased by a different muse.

With its seasonally changing menu, your palette is sure to be sur-prised and excited while dining at Muse. Flavor combinations such as a flatbread with butternut squash, goat cheese with caramel-ized onions, and arugula salad on top, create a beautiful cold and hot harmony for your taste buds. Warm lobster salad with chive-aioli on a grilled bun is sure to please, as well as Muse’s stunning chicken chopped salad drizzled with a champagne vinaigrette.

Whether you’re out with the girls, on a first date, or reconnecting with old friends, Muse has something for everyone. With its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, amazing menu, and accommodat-ing staff, you won’t find a better farm to fork dining adventure.

tucked between two little shops in Caldwell, Indian Creek Steakhouse

might not normally receive a second glance. However, the sweet scent of apple wood flavoring Idaho-grown Angus steak, fresh salmon, lobster, and shrimp will draw in the senses and lead you to the front door. If that doesn’t convince you to stay, the warm service and country western atmosphere will—it feels like you are step-ping into a John Wayne film as you take in the splendor from this unique, family-run establishment and eat the fine food that is intricately prepared by cooks with de-cades worth of experience.

With four stars and a high ranking on tripadvisor.com, google.com, urbanspoon.com, and more, Indian Creek Steakhouse is, unsurprisingly, a successful high-end steakhouse in its third year of commis-sion, and it is quite easy to see why. The

perfect amount of salt is sprinkled into the seasoned ribeye and sirloin steaks, accentuating the smoky, savory flavor. The bread is sweet fried bread and is served with the most delectable, smooth honey butter you will ever have.

The shrimp is smoked to perfection and will make even those who aren’t seafood fans yearn to have more. The service is friendly and comfortable, the food is out of this world, and the entire experience is to die for. And if all of that doesn’t make you want to become one of the regulars, the enormous portions will. Owner Dillon Wickel says that he’d rather give too much than too little; “I want to see people leaving full and still having food to take home,” he says.

You will feel like you are having dinner with family and friends at a five-star establishment. It is no wonder that Indian Creek Steakhouse has visitors drive from Utah, Iowa, and even Kansas to eat their one-of-a-kind steak. “People have come to us after going to high-end steakhouses such as Ruth’s Chris,” says Dillon, “and they’ve told us that they prefer our steak over any other.” This says a lot, and you will understand where these comments originate from after slicing through the soft steaks with a knife barely sharper than the one that comes with your butter. Each steak is smoked on locally grown and chopped apple wood, so the smoky sweet flavor soaks into every bite of each and every dish.

You can truly taste the dedication and admiration these people have for what they do, and the wholehearted atmosphere is definitely rooted in where it all began: in the heart and mind of Dillon Wickel. “He sold everything he owned to get this place up and running,” says his sister Kim Wickel, “His horses, his trucks—everything—he sold it all because he believed in this place and he wanted to take the taste of our uncle’s steakhouse (currently in Coeur d’Alene, Wolf Lodge Inn) and bring it into the lives of everyone here.”

Dillon says his first priority is buying the best meat possible for the best flavor. His determination and love for Indian Creek Steakhouse is eminent and is reflected in his dishes and five-star reviews. Fan favorites include “The Rancher,” a 14-oz ribeye steak; “The Sweetheart,” a 16-oz sirloin with 16 smoked pieces of shrimp; and the kids’ 8-10 oz steaks.

They open their doors at 5 pm Wednes-days through Saturday and close around 9 pm. To experience the unparalleled taste and atmosphere for yourself, visit them in Caldwell at 711 Main Street. If you have any questions about the Indian Creek Steakhouse, visit them on the web at www.indiancreeksteakhouse.com, or call them at (208) 459-4835.

than anywhere in the world, people are tragically starving to death in their over-weight or underweight bodies because of malnutrition. Cultured vegetables are a simple answer with massive benefits. Potentially most illness can be healed by addressing the gut culture; thyroid malfunction, candida, malabsorption, autism, arthritis, depression, M.S., celiac, even temporary issues like a hangover, or in infants, colic.

The big question is how to get culture in your life. Cultured vegetables are tangy and sparkle with deliciousness. They are available now in most health food stores and are also easy to make. At first start by adding a spoonful or two to your daily diet. Then you can begin to add more up to a cup and a half a day. It is possible to get too much of a good thing. Especially in the beginning. Your body will begin to rid itself of pathogenic bacteria and toxins and with that there might be a little gas and bloating and if you are really toxic, perhaps a headache. This is temporary, don't give up. You will notice that your skin will clear, you may notice more energy and your bodily functions will seem more smooth. Take it slow and enjoy! Your body will love you for it. The more you use cultured vegetables day after day you will feel better and the benefits will continue to be more evident. Please get some culture in your life.

In fact if you have inflamma-tion or digestion problems

you need more culture in your life. Perhaps you would like to create a more balanced Ph in your body, these and many more positive attributes are bountiful and available with cultured foods.

Right now you are probably ask-ing, “what are cultured foods?” When we speak of cultured foods we are talking about foods

that are fermented in their own juices. The most common is cabbage. Com-monly known as sauerkraut. Sour Kraut (greens or plants). But not cooked, raw fermentation. This process is not new, it in fact has been around hundreds of years as a way of preserving foods and nutrition. Often times other vegetables are added. The mix of shredded and pounded vegetables are fed a starter then left to age at room temperature for up to 15 days. During this process, high quality, gut friendly bacteria grow, multiply and thrive. This bacteria converts the sugars and starch from the veggies to lactic acid. The veggies partially digest and become soft when the process is complete. The vegetables will then last several months in refrigeration and get better over time. It is this aging of the cultured vegetables that can heal the body’s ecosystem. They are the ultimate raw superfood and they are delicious any time of the day.

More than ever people need to take more cultured foods into their system. Over the last hundred years the food supply in the west has become more adulterated. Since the last world war the amount of chemicals being used in food production has more than doubled. Even though we have more abundant choices here in the west

Pets are more than our best friends; they are our family. So, when Emily Santilli found out that her dog was allergic to grain and preservatives—much like most other cats and dogs—she took her love of animals and her passion for cooking and

began creating healthier, tastier, and all-around better blends and treats for animals. Then she thought, why stop there when I could help even more animals and Treasure Valley families? Starting with making her dog’s blends from home, she created Paws and Claws Kitchen, a healthy, happy food haven for pets. All her food is fresh, contains no preservatives, grain, corn, wheat, soy, or other fillers that are the common allergens for cats and dogs.

Emily sells dog and cat treats and blends to make healthy alterna-tive selections for pet owners to choose from. One of the best things about her pet food is that it is so affordable. For a month’s supply of food, it is only around $12. Other than fresh and nourishing meals, Emily also sells her popular Pumpkin Coco-Nutter dog treats, “meow munchies” cat treats, and even kitty and puppy birthday cakes!

She buys as many ingredients locally as she can, including eggs, honey, and salmon for the ideal protein level for every cat’s/dog’s diet. Ideally, a pet owner should change the protein in his/her dog’s diet every quarter so they don't develop an allergy. Signs of allergic reactions on your animals vary, but the following is a list of possible

reactions that indicate that your pet may need a change in his/her diet: • Non-stop itching (sometimes until they bleed) • Ears are filled with yeast • Speckles on tummy • Fur loss

Emily Santilli offers delivery, pick-up, and package delivery options to fit each customer’s convenience. However, she does only work with local customers at the time being, in order for the food to remain fresh.

To order food blends or treats from Paws and Claws Kitchen, or to learn more, call Emily at 661-414-2135. You can also visit her online at pawsandclawskitchen.com, or email her at [email protected]. Also, make sure you check out her booth at the local Boise Farmer’s Market.

LimbosaLimbosa

Good Mourning is a local modern rock band in the Boise area that combines classic and modern rock guitars with ethereal

vocals, aspiring harmonies, and steady rhythms. Their realm of musical inspirations touch from Indie Rock, Modern Rock, Pop, and Acoustic Medleys, which unite fans of all ages, backgrounds, and musical interests.

This diverse group is a functional foster family, in a sense; they have been together now since 2005 and are still going strong. From backgrounds to occupations, lifestyles/families, and musical inspirations, this group combines every aspect together to form a family of musicians. Singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and guitarist Crystal Macias brings the modern era of rock, which provides an emotional oversight to the group; Hawaiian Keoni Nelsen adds spirited flares to lead guitars, as well as balanced vocals; Scott Rittenhouse rivets a “Pink Floyd” inspiration to his lead guitar; Craig Rittenhouse on drums vamps up the beat from iconic and inspi-rational drummers of the heavy metal rock era of the ‘70s; bassist Brandon Nuss, hastens his many guitar influences and regurgitates them through the bass amp.

Through all the mutual admiration, understanding, and diversity, Good Mourning has taken over the Treasure Valley, creating a unique live experience and sound for all ages.

Formed in July of 2011 by Chris Brock (vocals/guitar) and Aaron Bossart (percussion), what once was “The Bare Bones” brought

sonic bliss anywhere they went. They were later joined by fellow Idahoan/bass player galore, Nik Kososik in the late summer of 2013, after deciding that being a two-piece band wasn't cutting it. Limbosa is here and ready to blend all of your musical wants and desires into a bloody gothic blues-rock smoothie. Taste the pounding drums, searing guitar riffs, and gut-wrenching vocals of Boise's premier blues rock trio as you dance away to some groovy darkness. Limbosa now brings you pure Rock & Roll: bluesy, gritty, bloody, and beautiful, because Limbosa doesn't really know how to do anything else.

“Even with one man down, the twosome destroyed their set with bouts of kick-ass solos on the guitar and drums in their songs, ‘The Devil’s Medicine’ and ‘Fight a Grizzly Bear.’” -Matt Shelar, Arbiter Online

“A guy I spoke with said that this band will be absolutely fantastic when they get older. I agree, but from what I saw and heard, they're already there.” -B. Schultz, Here Comes the Dumptruck

“A pair of superfans, Charlotte Verrinder and Krystal Moore, cut up The Crux’s hardwood floors for the whole set. Moore, who called herself ‘jinglebritches,’ said she couldn’t help herself while the band was play-ing. ‘It just makes you dance,’ Verrinder said. ‘Music is good when you can’t help but dance,’ Moore added.” -Harrison Berry, The Boise Weekly

“Brock’s guitar work is always sharp and inventive, whether he’s playing a tortured, dis-torted instrumental passage or laying down a bouncy blues riff for his smooth, clean vocals to soar over...” - Dustin Verburg, SSG Music

Marcia says, “Bianca loved going to WestVet for hydrotherapy and acupuncture. She would usually fall asleep during her acupuncture treatments. I would drop her off in the morning and would pick her back up in the evening. She never wanted to leave the facility. In fact, she’d always try to go back in the door in which we would enter.” Before receiving treatment, Bianca was unable to get up from lying down and had a diminished quality of life. After treatment, Bianca was mobile and her signs of pain dissipated.

Marcia gushes, “WestVet is an amazing clinic with specialists in all fields of vet-erinary care. Bianca felt so loved while she was receiving treatment.” Since Bianca was fond of playing in the water she especially enjoyed her hydrotherapy sessions at WestVet. Marcia says, “When Bianca was no longer able to walk, the compassionate staff at WestVet made Bianca’s end of life moments very peaceful. They all came into the room and said goodbye to her. I received a beautiful paw print to remember her by and still cherish the condolences card signed by everyone at WestVet.”

Marcia is very thankful for the specialized treatment Bianca received because it allowed her to enjoy an extra full year at home with Bianca. WestVet will work with you and your family veterinarian to help you decide the right treatment plan your pet. Physiotherapy is not just for older pets. Your pet can benefit from WestVet’s specialty services if they’ve undergone surgery, are overweight, or if they need muscle movement re-education. WestVet even provides pre-season conditioning care for hunt-ing and sport dogs.

You don’t have to go through your pet’s illness alone. The WestVet team of veterinary specialists reminds us that, “We hope you don’t need us, but if you do, we’re here to help.”
