Maths with Mrs Powell

3-6: The 3-6 students were investigating floating and sinking which led to their participation in the activity “float my boat.” Firstly the students investigated floating by building foil boats and afterwards loaded them with weights to see how much the boat would hold before it sunk. Through testing, the students discovered an important pattern - the boat’s size and shape made a difference in how much a load the boat could carry. Prior to the students testing their boats, they explained the process of making their boats and the reasoning behind the design, and predicted how much they though their boats would hold. After the students had tested their boats and how much load it carried they redesigned the boats based on the observations from the experiment. Aspects that were discussed in the redesign process were what features do boats that hold a lot of weight have in common? Some answers involved “size- bigger boats hold more weight; strength - sturdy boats don’t crumble under the load; and stability - so the boats don’t roll over or take on water adding extra weight.” Originally, after the first testing, the winning boat was Jasper and Jackson’s whose boat held over 400g, but after remodelling the winners were Seth and Gus whose boat held over 900g.

K-2: 2D and 3D shapes was the students learning topic. Firstly, they started the lesson by identifying different 2D and 3D shapes around the classroom. Then using marshmallows and toothpicks, constructed 2D and 3D shapes of their choice. The toothpicks made the sides (edges) of the shapes and the marshmallows made the corners (vertices). The students then wrote a reflection based on the activity and one of the shapes they had made.

YEAR 3: Last week, the year 3 students were learning about fractions. They learnt to identify different fractions including halves, quarters, thirds, and fifths. Their favourite activity for learning fractions was based on the book “The Lion’s Share” where all

the guests at the Lion’s party cut a piece of cake for themselves until there was no cake left for

the Lion. The students replicated the story by cutting a piece of paper to recreate the cake and

cut the relevant fractions of the cake for each animal.

Learning in Year 3-6 To increase the variety of fun, playground activities for students I have introduced 4 scooters for the Y3-6 students. Strict rules have been applied to the use of the scooters to ensure equitable use and safe use. Last week the Y4-6 students discussed student reward systems that aimed to increase student excellence, school pride and student engagement. We were having difficulty identifying a healthy, cheap reward for the children to achieve, as they strove for student excellence and engagement. Chay suggested an “out of uniform” reward system which had merit, as there was level of difficulties to achieve, it was cheap, healthy and student driven. This is ultimately what I want my students to become creative, independent, responsible students, who show initiative. Please have your child explain this reward system which we will “give it a go” and re-evaluate at the end of the term. Last week Tahlia, Sam J and Sam D made delicious, healthy fired rice which everyone enjoyed for Thursday recess. At home, Gavan and Jasper made ginger muffins which we eagerly devoured at lunch. On Wednesday Seth, Gus, Deegan, Jackson and Jasper participated in the NSW Permanent Maths test which was exceptionally difficult but all boys strove to achieve personal excellence. In Science the students were given the task of saving an ice cube from melting. The students worked co-operatively to research how to insulate an ice cube and design an insulated container for their ice cube. The following day the students constructed their containers and placed them directly in the sun. An unprotected ice cube was placed directly next to their containers to enable the students to make comparative observations. The students concluded that all the containers insulated the ice cubes from the melting effects of the sun. However, Chay, Daley and Hunter’s container provided the best protection. In art we analysed Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night”, Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” and “The Big Wave” by Japanese artist Hokusai. Afterwards the students painted their own “The Scream” in the style of Edvard Munch. Next the students will use the green screen app to superimpose themselves into their painting and hopefully the “Chatter Pix” app to record their learning journey.
