Alexander Road Alexander Road may have been named after an early settler Edward Alexander or one of his descendants who farmed in the Wallaceville area (section 61). But it may have been named after Eric Edwin Alexander the contractor who built the road and owner of the Alexander Contracting Company in Upper Hutt.

Alleyne Court Alleyne Court I was informed was named after the former wife of Mr Les Taylor a land agent who was involved initially in developing the subdivision. The only female to match was Mary Alleyne Taylor 1898-1992 who in 1922 married John Ashmole Taylor.

Alleys Way Alleys Way was named after Geoffrey Thomas Alley (1903-1986) an All Black, New Zealand first National Librarian and founder of Upper Hutt Library. He retired to his Upper Hutt property. His brother was Rewi Alley (1897-1987).

I was informed that W A L (Les) Andrews was a popular journalist and Director of the Upper Hutt Times newspaper. Mr Les Andrews of Kaitoke was President of the A & P Association & County Council member until his death March 1953. The Governor General of New Zealand (1930-1935) Lord Bledisloe (1867-1958) appointed his brother Major Arthur Henry Bathurst (1872-1936) as the private military secretary to the Governor of New Zealand. Bathurst Street in Heretaunga was originally named Station Street but was renamed around 1930. Beaufort Close Beaufort Close was named after the house of Beaufort of an English noble family. The last wife of King Henry VIII was Queen Catherine Parr a descendant of the Beaufort family. In 1682 Charles II created Henry Somerset as the first Duke of Beaufort. Kingsley Heights subdivision street names had a Royalty theme.

Benge Crescent Benge Crescent was named after the Benge family. The Benge's were early waggoneers taking timber to the market in Wellington. David Benge arrived in 1841 and later acquired a sawmill at the Mangaroa/Te Marua turnoff. His sons continued working the saw-mill until 1888 while other descendants became farmers in the Upper Hutt district. Arthur Clouston (also a saw miller) was the developer of the Clouston Park Estate which was opened on 18 March 1954.

Bentinck Street Bentinck Street was named after Lady Oliva Caroline Amelia Bentinck formerly Taylour. She became the owner of part section 125 Hutt District where the Bentinck Estate was situated. The land was originally purchased in 1843 by William Thompson an alderman of London but he never came to New Zealand and was one of the many absent landowners of that period. The Crown Grant was not issued until 1877. Lady Bentinick was the only child and daughter of Thomas Taylour Earl of Bective who inherited the land from William Thompson. He then signed it over to his daughter Lady Bentinck who was married to Lord Henry Cavendish Bentinck. Some people believe the Street was named after the original land owner’s descendants while others believe after the 1840 NZ Company ship Lord William Bentinck. It was not named after Lady Lucy Caroline Cavendish-Bentinck as she was actually Lady Lucy Caroline Cavendish formerly Lyttleton who married Lord Frederick Cavendish. Bernadette Street Bernadette Street was named after Sister Mary Bernadette. Sister Bernadette spent 30 years at St Joseph’s orphanage taking care of the children. The subdivision was developed on land owned and previously used as the farm for the St Joseph’s orphanage.

Beth Street Beth Street was named after I was informed that John Street and Beth Street were named after the children of the developer of the Trentham Estate. Horace Graham Rutter & Co was the land agent in Main Road Upper Hutt and advertised for sale the sections in the both streets. Horace’s wife was Elizabeth. I do not know who the developer of the subdivision was. John Skeoch Rutter born 1899 & Elizabeth Marion Rutter born 1901 parents were Marion and Thomas Rutter. Thomas may have been the brother of the land agent Horace Graham Rutter. The street was part of the Trentham Estate and the civil engineers were Beere and Seddon. Betty Watt Grove Betty Watt Grove was named after Betty Watt (nee Thorner). Betty was New Zealand representative in Cricket (1956-1965) and Hockey (1960-1965). In Upper Hutt she was known for working with the elderly and bereavement support. The Riverstone Terrace subdivision street naming theme was Upper Hutt citizens who made a contribution to the district.

Blundell Way Blundell Way was named after the Blundell family who owned land at Trentham. Henry Blundell (1813 Ireland-1878 Sydney Australia) was the founder of the early Wellington Evening Post newspaper. He held freehold sections No 11 & 33 at Wallaceville Upper Hutt as detailed in the Hutt Electoral Roll 1870 & 1875-1876. When Henry died in Australia his body was brought back to New Zealand and buried at Bolton Street cemetery in Wellington. Or was it named after Sir Denis Blundell (1907-1984) Governor General of New Zealand 1972-1977.

Hildreth Street Hildreth Street was named after Lieutenant Joseph Hildreth. Joseph (a Salvation Army Officer) was one of the many Salvationists who were imprisoned in Australia and New Zealand for illegal processions and open-air meetings. The 1855 by-law stated “No person shall be allowed without permission to play any musical instrument beat any drum or sung any song to carry for the purpose of display any flag or torch in any public or private place in the said (Napier) borough”. In 1886 Lieutenant Joseph Hildreth and 13 soldiers of the Napier Corps appeared in the Napier court they refused to pay their fines and were imprisoned. “A new street in the Salvation Army sub division is to be called Hildreth Street after a well know salvationists” reference Upper Hutt Leader 10 March 1960 page 7

Fergusson Drive was named after His Excellency the Governor General of New Zealand Sir Bernard Fergusson. He declared Upper Hutt a City in 1966. His family had a holiday batch in Newton Street Moonshine. In 1941 the Council proposed to change Newton Street to Kain Street but it did not happen. In 1942 the Council again proposed to change Rosenberg Street to Kain Street but again it did not happen.

Moonshine Hill Road Moonshine Hill road was perhaps named after a story about illegal distilling of whiskey in the hills between Trentham and Judgeford. Another version is the way the moon shone on the hills. The early Maori name for the area of Moonshine was Pu-rehurehu (misty hollows). Moonshine Hill road begins from State highway 2 up into the Moonshine Valley towards Judgeford where the name changes to Moonshine Road Judgeford Porirua.

Newton Street Newton Street no longer exists. Weekend holiday batches were built along Newton Street next to the river in Moonshine. The street was absorbed into the Upper Hutt River Road bypass on state highway 2. Newton Street was named after Arthur Wells Newton from the firm Richmond & Newton Engineers & Surveyors who were involved with the 1908 Dominion Estate subdivision in Upper Hutt. The Council proposed to change Newton Street to Kain Street in 1941 but it did not happen. The Kain family had a holiday batch in Newton Street Moonshine. Their son was the WWII New Zealand fighter pilot ace Flying Officer Edgar James (Cobber) Kain DFC who flew in the Royal Air Force (1918-1940). In 1942 the Council proposed to change Rosenberg Street to Kain Street but this also did not happen.
