UHLIBRARY

CENTRAL LIBRARY HOURS Monday - Friday 10am - 7pm Saturday & Sunday 10am - 4pm

“Memories of Main Street” was a

recent event held by the Library’s

Heritage Collections on the second

floor of The Mall. This exhibition

of historic photographs was a

celebration of Upper Hutt’s main

business and shopping thoroughfare

and the many changes it has been

through over the years. It also

provided an opportunity for local

people to bring in and share their own

memories of the people, shops, and

events that have made Main Street

what it is, so that this knowledge

could be collected and preserved for

future generations.

The occasion served as a useful

reminder for us here at the Library

that our own history has also been

closely involved with Main Street.

Upper Hutt’s first Public Library

opened in 1952 on the top floor of

the Benge Building, at the corner of

Main and Russell Streets. In 1956

it moved down Main Street to new

premises next door to the Borough

Council offices on the corner of

Blenheim Street, where it stayed until

making the shift to Fergusson Drive

in 1969.

Did you ever use the Library when it was

on Main Street? If so, we’d be interested

to hear your reminiscences about what it

was like and how it has changed. Talk to

Reid or Lauren at the Library or send us

an email at [email protected]. We’d

love to hear from you!
