1) President embarked on 2-day Bhutan visit: President Pranab Mukherjee today embarked on a two-day visit
to Bhutan with an aim of further strengthening bilateral ties. It is the first visit by any Indian head of state in 26
years, during which some agreements in education sector are likely to be signed. During the visit, Mukherjee will
meet the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and the Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, besides
other leaders to help expand bilateral ties to a new level.
2) Shakib Al Hasan creates record: Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has become only the third player
in history to take 10 wickets and score a century in a Test match. His 137 and match figures of 10-124 against
Zimbabwe saw him follow in the footsteps of Ian Botham and Imran Khan. Bangladesh won the second Test in
Khulna by 162 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
3) Three day Rashtriya Bal Film Mela to commence on November 14 : Shri Prakash Javadekar, Minister for
Information and Broadcasting said that Swacchta will be the main theme for three days long Rashtriya Bal Film
Mela which is to be held from November 14-16, 2014, at Siri fort Auditorium, New Delhi. The festival is planned fo
the first time in Delhi on the sidelines of Childrens day celebrations. Addressing the Press Conference Shri
Javadekar said, the theme for Rashtriya Bal Film Mela would help in taking Swacch Bharat Abhiyan to children
and would create awareness among them through the medium of films.
4) National Cancer Awareness Day observed : National cancer awareness day was observed on 7 November
every year. Day was observed to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and
treatment.
5) World Chess Championship begins: Opening ceremony of the World Chess Championship match between
Norway's Magnus Carlsen and India's Viswanathan Anand was conducted at the Congress Hall of the Radisson
Blu hotel in Sochi on 7 November 2014. The ceremony was attended by some of the biggest names in the worldof politics and chess. The list of VVIP dignitaries included International Chess Federation (FIDE) President Kirsan
Ilyumzhinov, Russian Chess Federation President Andrey Filatov, advisor to Russian President Igor Levitin,
former World Champions Boris Spassky, Nona Gaprindashvili, Anatoly Karpov, Alexander Khalifman, Zhu Chen,
Antoaneta Stefanova, Alexandra Kosteniuk and Russian deputy minister of sports Pavel Kolobkov.
6) Jet Airways banned shark fins as cargo : Jet Airways has instituted a policy against the shipment of shark
fins, joining a growing number of major international carriers committed to protecting declining shark populations
and marine ecosystems. Humane Society International/India, which along with animal welfare and conservation
groups had petitioned Jet Airways to end its role in the international trade in shark fins, applauded the policy.
7) India gets its first Marine Stewardship Council certified fishery: Ashtamudi Estuary's short neck clam
fishery on 5 Nov 2014 became the first Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fishery in India. The
Ashtamudi short neck clam fishery is the third fishery in Asia after Vietnam and Maldives to have received this
recognition. The Ashtamudi lake, a Ramsar wetland of international importance, is the second largest estuarine
system in Kerala. It has extensive mangrove habitats harboring nearly 90 species of fish and 10 species of clams.
