February 2007. Test Trout Trophy. Congratulations to Vic for winning the trophy with his 1/48 Me109 G-4 in Italian markings. Silver went to Paul Adams with his Toyota Corolla WRC and bronze to Simon for his 1959 Ferrari Arno Monopost powerboat. Questionnaires. Please can you let me have your completed questionnaires back this evening. I have some blank ones with me if you didn’t collect one last month. Events Since We Last Met. Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton. There was a good turn out of club members to the show once again this year. We found the competition arrangements a little bizarre though: once all entries were in at 12:00 they shut the doors for judging right through until 3:00 when the awards were handed out, so there was no opportunity for the public to admire the models that had been entered! Otherwise, there were plenty of traders there and nearly all of us went away with kit purchases. Paul Adams didn’t succumb to temptation though, but the torment was apparent! Forthcoming Events. Airfix Catalogue.

Many thanks to Keith for the following news…….

“I have just received the 2007 Airfix catalogue. Basically its the 2006 catalogue with a new cover and a 16 page supplement in the middle.

The supplement re-confirms Hornby's commitment to the Airfix web site and Airfix modellers clubs. It also has details of the pre-painted mini kits, RNLI lifeboat and air sea rescue set. The four airfield sets, a new Battle of Britain memorial flight set in 2007 colours and decals, new mk1 Spitfire Duxford 1938, and the acrylic paint range”.

There were a couple of gents from Hornby who were handing out prizes at the Yeovilton model show theother day. They mentioned the above, along with the 1/48 Canberra kit being available on a limited run / preorder basis (in other words, if you want one you need to order without delay!) Paul & I listened to what was said but did not think the Hornby guys looked too comfortable nor sounded too convincing. Lists of Airfix modellers club members had been mislaid and they ask that you contact them if you are a member.

Name badges

A consequence of being blessed with having many new members is the difficulty many of us have in remembering names. Vic proposes that we have some badges made up: what do you think? I would find it useful for remembering my own name, let alone anyone else’s!

How do you do that?!Okay, I had intended to continue with the theme of “back to basics”, but have not had the time to write anything. Sorry about that! As an alternative, here are some notes about a cheap and plentiful source of handy material for use in model making……Aluminium soda drinks cans…….I use aluminium from a soda can quite frequently during model builds. It does, however, have a polymer coating on the inside face and paint on the outside. You need to decide whether to remove these coatings for the parts you are going to make.

I left the coating on when I made this cockpit for a Curtiss Hawk biplane. All I had to do when painting was to airbrush Tamiya “smoke” in the shaded regions.

You can see that the material is easy to fold and cut (see the slots cut out for belts in the seat for example).

I have also left the coating on when I used the material for blast screens: photos below show repairs I made after I dropped my 1/700 scale model of HMS Triumph during building and also a photo of 1/350 CV-8 USS Hornet.

If the part needs a lot of folding and gluing, or if it is likely to get some handling, then it is a good idea to remove the coating first of all. I do this either with wet & dry (grade 320 or finer) or by a fibreglass scratch pen (I do this outdoors, though, as the broken fibres can be an irritant if left around the workbench).

You can make some quite detailed parts, here is a toolbox I made up for a 1/48 aircraft diorama.

For cutting, I use an Olfa-P cutter to cut a groove and then flex the part to break it away.

Rolling a curve is done by placing the part on a rubber pad and using a roller. Hard rubber and a large roller for shallow curves, soft & deep rubber with a smaller roller for tight curves. I also use this method to remove the curve from the material when it has been cut from the can.

When it comes to painting, I either spray on a primer or (as in the case of the ship models) airbrush on enamel paint. Apply the paint as a “dusting” layer first of all to get a tooth for heavier top coats.

1/144 Launch Complex 39A diorama.I saw this model on www.aircraftresourcecenter.com and was most impressed. Many thanks to the author, Frank McVeigh for his kind permission to include it in our club newsletter.

This is a project that took about a year to complete. I researched this subject as much as possible on-line. I drew the layout on a poster board - placed the models in relative position and made my notes. Ultimately, this was nothing more than an "educated as possible" guestimate. I wanted the pad to look functional, dirty and in-operation. The pad consists of 1/4" Luan flooring cut and shaped into the various panels and angles -then scored with a nail. The pad was prepared with a gesso-spray to accept the acrylic paint. All the painting is done by hand / brush on the pad. I used various styrene pieces to scratch-build the details that occupy the pad. N scale vehicles were added to give a human feel of being in operation.

The orbiter is the basic Revell kit with full stack. I realize that the mobile launch platform is inaccurate, but I left it alone so as not to have this piece any larger than I had to have it! The shuttle is decorated with Real Space Models decals. The rotating and fixed service structures are also a Revell kit - with scratch-built piping and hoses (such as the LOX vent). This is a subject I've wanted to undertake for sometime and enjoyed seeing the transformation from raw wood to launch pad.

Next Meeting: March 21

Happy modelling! Pat Camp Tel: 02380 266828, email [email protected]
