Today, Purim anti-Semitism is, as it has always been, clear and easy to spot. It is the Pittsburgh and Poway shooters. It is the young white supremacist who wanted to blow up the synagogue in Pueblo, Colorado last month, or the deranged young man from this area who threatened our Jewish Community Center over the summer. Hanukkah anti-Semitism, on the other hand, asks Jews to abandon their traditions and to worship false gods in order to survive, as Antiochus did 2000 years ago when he tried to force a Jew to eat a non-kosher animal in front of the community. After a very positive response to my Kol Nidre sermon on the rise of gun violence

and anti-Semitism in our country, I decided to offer a four session mini-course on

the subject, called “Anti-Semitism: Past, Present and Future.” The first two classes

were held in November, with the remaining sessions set for Thursdays, December

5 and 12th, from 12 Noon to 1 PM in the Wilkoff Library. Even if you missed the

first two classes, you are more than welcome to attend the final two this month, as

the sessions are really self-contained units. The first class was a brief historical

overview of antisemitism, the second on the current threat from the Right, the

third class on the present dangers posed by the Left, and the last class on what can

be done to ameliorate or even eradicate anti-Semitism in the future.

In the Jewish Review of Books, writer Dara Horn points out that the two anti-

Semitic threats we face today, from the Right and the Left, are, in fact, very ancient

ones that go back to two important, albeit minor, Jewish holidays: Purim and

Hanukkah. All anti-Semitism, she argues, can be divided into Purim anti-Semitism

and Hanukkah antisemitism.

Horn writes, “ In the Purim version, exemplified by the Persian genocidal decrees

and the biblical book of Esther, as well as by more recent ideologies like Nazism

and today's many versions of radical Islam, the goal is unambiguous: Kill all the

Jews. In the Hanukkah version, as in the second century BCE Hellenized Seleucid

regime led by Antiochus that criminalized all expressions of Judaism, the goal is to

eliminate Jewish civilization.”

While Purim anti-Semitism seeks physical extermination of the Jews, the goal of

Hanukkah anti-Semitism is cultural genocide. Today, Purim anti-Semitism is, as it

has always been, clear and easy to spot. It is the Pittsburgh and Poway shooters. It

is the young white supremacist who wanted to blow up the synagogue in Pueblo,

Colorado last month, or the deranged young man from this area who threatened

our Jewish Community Center over the summer.

Hanukkah anti-Semitism, on the other hand, asks Jews to abandon their traditions

and to worship false gods in order to survive, as Antiochus did 2000 years ago

when he tried to force a Jew to eat a non-kosher animal in front of the community.

VIEW FROM THE PULPIT CONT.

Today Hanukkah anti-Semitism can be found in those who accuse American Jews

of dual loyalty, placing the welfare of the State of Israel above national security

concerns. Hanukkah anti-Semitism can be found in stores and shopping malls

during the Christmas season which refuse to offer the more politically correct

greeting, “Happy Holidays”, insisting on having the right to say “Merry

Christmas”, to which I always say, “Thank you very much and the same to you, but

I am Jewish and I celebrate Hanukkah”. In general, any attempt to make Jewish

people conform to the majority culture by compromising or relinquishing our own

traditions, or bowing to the will of the majority through resigned acceptance, is

Hanukkah Anti-Semitism.

Although many people assume that Hanukkah represents a popular revolt against

threatened physical annihilation, the real significance of Hanukkah is the assertion

of a particular identity against the claims of a “universal” culture. For the Hellenism

which the Syrian Greeks attempted to impose was just that; the “universal” culture

of its day which offered special rewards to the individual who would conform to it at

the expense of his or her own identity and values. Hanukkah is about saying “no” to

that trade off.

What Hanukkah commemorates may be understood, then, in both a particularly

Jewish and in a general humanistic way. Hanukkah’s particular message is that

there is significance and worth in Jews continuing to be Jewish even if it means

continuing as part of a small minority within a much larger majority culture. The

general message is that no universal culture, no matter how great its artistic,

intellectual and scientific achievements, can or should demand a kind of conformity

which requires people to give up their own special, unique experience. Hanukkah

reminds us of the delicate balance between the legitimacy and merit of keeping a

minority identity, and the sometimes subtle, sometimes overbearing demands of a

majority culture.

Darlene joins me in wishing all of you a very happy and safe Hanukkah, filled with

pride and confidence in being who we are, namely, American Jews in the 21st

Century who are proud of their religious and spiritual heritage.

A Message From Our Executive Director

Bob Golubich has been dedicated to Congregation Rodef Sholom for 40 years! In celebration of

his retirement, I wanted to share a special edition of “Did you know” full of Bob-isms and special

moments in Bob’s life and career.

Did you know that Bob Golubich….

is the only person that knows how to work the Rodef Sholom dishwashers and coffee

pots?

spent 40 years mastering the systems of Congregation Rodef Sholom? He is the only

person that truly knows how this building and functions.

has memorized the name of every congregant, their family members, and their pets

remembers “almost” every event he has ever staffed and celebrated at Temple

(including the decorations for each party!)

knew exactly how to meet the Sisterhood’s expectation of table, chair, and tablecloth

setups

kept his bicycle at the Temple and went for a daily bike ride (weather permitting of

course)?

has a pet groundhog at the temple?

and Shelia moved into a new home in McDonald this summer? The home was

custom made for them and built by his son-in-law to keep Bob and Shelia close to

them.

is an avid Cleveland sports fan?

and Sheila have 23 great-grandchildren?

loves his two dogs named Pumpkin and Sweetheart?

has worked over 2050 Shabbat Services?

worked with 4 Rabbi’s, 3 cantors, and 23 Board Presidents?

has a Dodge Charger that he calls Sweetie and presents at car shows?

keeps the trophies he wins at his car show in Sweetie so they are always ready to be

presented?

use to make sure the security dogs (back in the day) coordinated their “outfits” to

match the wedding party?

acts as the leading authority on the history of the Elm Street neighborhood?

has a sixth sense… the ability to find cake wherever it may be in the building?

is always ready to celebrate his friends?

is the ultimate “Yeah” man?

Thank you, Bob, for an unforgettable 40 years with Congregation Rodef Sholom. Your

service and dedication this past 40 years will forever be appreciated by congregants,

board members, presidents, and staff, past, present and future.

Lay-Led Shabbat List

The Ritual Committee Needs New Members The Ritual Committee of Rodef Sholom has the important role of working with Rabbi to

develop service ideas, to review past services, to suggest changes in ritual procedures. The

committee is active and is always looking to broaden input from the congregation. Our role

may become even more important as Rodef transitions from Rabbi Muller’s long service to an

interim Rabbi and a year or two later to a new permanent Rabbi. We welcome membership

from congregants with diverse viewpoints and ritual experiences. The Ritual Committee

meets every two to three months. Our meeting times are adjusted to try and accommodate

the greatest number of participants. We most often meet at noon, but have been known to

hold meetings at 8 am or 4 pm.

If you have any questions about the committee, please feel free to contact me. If you would

like to join the committee, please advise the office and me.

TOILETRY PROJECT LITTLE THINGS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

Shampoos, conditioners, lotions, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, soaps, razors...small toiletries that you might pick up in hotels when traveling would be so appreciated by those in need. I have been distributing baggies filled with all of the above items to people at the Food Bank, Sojourner House, Homeless Shelters and others in need. I will pick up at the following drop off places: Jewish Community Center, Congregation Rodef Sholom, Temple El Emeth, Ohev Tzedek, Universalist Unitarian Church and Churchill Methodist Church.

An easy way to help in a big way. Thank you so much. ~Linda Palumbo

On November 8th, 2019, we had the honor of having Mayor Tito Brown attend our

Shabbat Service. He spoke about what it means to be a leader in the city of

Youngstown, during the service and it was meaningful and impactful. Afterwards,

we had an intimate Shabbat Oneg with the Mayor, with a delicious dinner by

Kandy Rawl.

Commision for Jewish Education Report

This fall, MSJS was actively preparing for the year 5780! Students from MSJS participated in Hebrew school learning about Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. On Sunday, October 13, children and families

from Rodef Sholom traveled to Ohev Tzedek and volunteered to decorate their Sukkah; the community Sukkah for our Sukkot celebrations.

A special thank you was sent to Congregation Rodef Sholom from Congregation Ohev Tzedek

recognizing the families and participants: Magda, Ilana, and Ethan Cohen; Connor, Emily, and Michael Fitzpatrick; Kim, Dan, Caleb, Rhett, and Madelina Gear; Josh and Arthur Greenbaum; Matan Norani; Violet, Thomas, Juniper, Lawren, and Kandy Rawl; Hunter Thomas; and Shayna, Jacob, and

Sarah Wilschek.

Commision for Jewish Education Report

On Thursday, October 17, 2019, MSJS hosted a dedication ceremony for the new

Aron Kodish (holy ark) and Eternal Light in the Akiva Multipurpose Room.

During the ceremony, the Akiva choir performed, and Rabbi Muller palyed Torah

Trivia with students and guests in the audience. Rabbi Schonberger and Sandy

Kessler also spoke during the dedication. The ark, light, and updated cabinetry

was a gift from the Chudakoff family.
