On September 4, 2014, parents and students attended "Back to School Night" at SES. Parents met their child's teacher(s), and were introduced to the SES staff. The SES staff showed lots of spirit by dressing in their new Sudlersville Elementary School jerseys.

Sudlersville Schools Participate in Title I Information DinnerOn September 18, 2014, parents and students from Sudlersville Elementary School and Sudlersville Middle School hold an informational meeting and provide dinner at the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Department. Approximately 75 parents and students were in attendance. Parents participated in six informational sessions presented by teachers and parent coordinators from both schools. Afterwards, they enjoyed dinner prepared by volunteers from the Sudlersville Volunteer Fire Department.

It is hard to believe that September is already over! We have had a great beginning to the school year. The children are doing a wonderful job learning how to follow classroom rules and routines. We have been reading a lot of stories about feelings, sharing and going to school. In addition, we have been learning about colors and shapes. Have your child look around and identify circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. This month we will be learning our nursery rhymes in preparation for Nursery Rhyme Day on Thursday, October 30th. Please ask your child each night which new rhyme we learned that day. Thank you for all your support!The Pre-k Team

Kindergarten will be observing seasonal changes as we explore the fall season. This is a busy season for our science tables so please send in exciting things like acorns, small pumpkins, pine cones and apples for us to investigate. We are looking forward to our trip to the Wicked R Ranch on October 30. Remember to return your child's permission slip and to provide a white tee shirt to be tie dyed. First Grade Happenings!First Graders have adjusted to our schedule wonderfully! We added literacy block and intervention classes at the end of September and students have been enjoying both.(please make sure students are reading 4 nights a week and filling in their reading logs, it is an important part of our reading instruction) We started a new unit in Science on Habitats to get us ready for our upcoming field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo. The children are looking forward to this trip, it has always been a favorite for our first graders! Please send in the permission slips and money ASAP and don't forget that if you are going with us to please have Volunteer applications filled out and a volunteer session completed with one of our Parent Coordinators. O – Oh boy! Fall is here already!C – Can you believe September is gone? Make sure your child dresses appropriately for the changing weather. Also, make sure to label jackets, lunchboxes and other belongings.T – The 2nd grade has been working very hard! Transitioning to Literacy Block each day has gone well and the students seem very comfortable with it. We’ve finished the first 2 math topics and are almost finished with Topic 3 which focuses on subtraction strategies. Our Social Studies Unit on Communities and geography is almost complete. O – Our grade will be traveling to Washington DC on Tuesday, October 14th to visit the Natural History Museum. Please make sure to send in you permission slips and payment for that trip.B – Be sure and get to a volunteer workshop if you are interested in coming with us on our trip. Information is coming soon!E – Everybody’s a winner when you do your best! Keep up the good work second grade! Don’t forget to read each and every night and complete your Reading Logs.R – Rotations have started during intervention time. This year Mrs. Troyer will focus on word work and Reader’s Theater, Ms. Eber will focus on technology and Ms. Kane will focus on STEM activities. Each class will meet 30 minutes per day. We will rotate every two weeks so that each class benefits from the enriching activities that each teacher is doing.

Happy October! We hope you are finding your back-to-school groove like we are! Please remember that on October 8th we will be walking to the SVFC for a fire safety presentation. This does require a permission slip for your child to leave school property and will only be approximately one hour. In math we are beginning our multiplication unit. It is important to practice the facts with your child daily, as it will increase their speed and understanding as we move into more complex content later in the year. We are also studying the scientific method and energy in science, as well as reading many different stories and nonfiction texts in our literacy blocks. Continue completing nightly reading and math homework, all of which is due on Fridays. Finally, conferences are just around the corner! Hard to believe! Towards the end of the month you will receive a conference slip from your child's teacher, so please try to return it promptly to allow us the time and flexibility to accommodate everyone. Have a great month!

Happy fall! It has been a great first month of school! Thanks to all who attended the “back to school” night in September~ it was great to meet you! October will be a busy month at S.E.S! Third grade students continue to have weekly homework as well as reading literacy logs. These assignments will be due on Friday’s. Please continue to check your child’s agenda daily for homework and important announcements. Reading instruction continues to be integrated in Social Studies and Science. In Unit 2 of math, the students are learning to regroup with addition and subtraction problems. Please help us by making sure your child knows his/her basic addition facts by heart. Many students benefit from practicing these quick facts at home. Thank you. Outstanding October

In our county students are invited to participate in a contest called Conflict Resolution Day. Students create a bookmark in the contest and we started rough copies last week. This week students will finish their rough copy and I will send them home with the entry form. Please read the entry form and if your child is participating help him/her with the final copy. Entry forms must be back to me by October 10, 2014. If your child brings back his/her rough copy with the completed entry form I will laminate it for participating in the contest. I am looking forward to seeing SES students’ finished bookmarks.

use creepy spider rings or ghostly goblins as their bingo chips. To encourage reading outside of school, let your child choose books that interest them. You may want to focus on the life cycle of pumpkins or apples. You could select books that discuss what animals do in the fall. Your child may enjoy reading spooky stories or poems. For younger children let them wear a plastic finger, while they are tracking print. It is a creepy, but cool way to encourage voice to print matching. Lastly, you could let your child read by flashlight or your cell phone. It might set the mood for some fall reading fun! For more reading tips and treats, join us for our “Reading Around the Campfire Night” on October 16th. We are looking for volunteers to help that night and/ or donate supplies. We are looking for items to make S’mores including: graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows. We also need volunteers to make S’Mores, lead a station or prepare materials. If you are interested in helping to plan this night or any other family night, please join us on October 2nd at 8 am for a planning meeting. “Fall into Reading” It’s the perfect time to fall into Reading! The fall offers amazing autumnal changes to spark conversation with your child. Let them jump in the fall leaves, pick ripe pumpkins, and taste crisp apples. All of these experiences help to build your child’s background knowledge and language. You can turn a day trip into an “I spy game.” For example, “I spy something that is red, ripe and in a tree. What is it?” You can also discuss how the pumpkin grows from a seed to a ripe pumpkin. Around a campfire, tell family stories or make up your own. You start with some story starters, such as “One cool fall day I…,” or “I was walking down the road, when I suddenly saw a….” Story telling not only promotes language development but also family time.The season of fall can be the backdrop for developing your child’s phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness includes a child’s ability to find rhyming words, create their own rhyme and identify letter sounds. For younger children you can use songs or nursery rhymes to make practice fun. For instance you can rewrite familiar songs or nursery rhymes to describe the fall. Older students may enjoy writing their own poems or songs about the changing season. Bingo is a popular game for all ages. You can create your own bingo boards that include fall words or high frequency words. Make bingo better by letting your child

2014-2015 Eagle Squad Members Start New Season

Tryouts to be a member of thisyear’s S.E.S. Eagle Squad was an intense competition among many

of our best school citizens. Twenty-seven students turned out to compete with one another for the September tryouts. Judges watched students perform a standardized series of exercises. The exercises were designed to test both physical and mental coordination. Some parents also came to observe the tryouts.

Thank you to all the parents who supported their children’s participation in this competition. Special thanks, too, to our judges, P.E. Coach Kesley Dean, Music Teacher Chris Harrison, and Guidance Counselor Nicole Connor who carefully scored each candidate’s performance.

The 2014-2015 Eagle Squad members are Fathia Al-Atiyyat, Jordanna Al-Atiyyat, Romin Bowers, Michael Carroll, Avery Elborn, Caleb Ford, Meygan Hastings, Cassie Jones, Kamryn Murray, Jazelle Torres, Derrick Troyer, Bairon Vasquez, and Devon Yoder. The team has already had two practices under the direction of Drill Instructor Den Leventhal and Eagle Squad Director Mary Leventhal.

The Queen Anne’s County Health Department once again will be administering Flumist to elementary students grades K through 4th . Consent forms must be completed and returned in order for your child to receive the vaccine. The first dose is scheduled for later in October . Students who have not previously been vaccinated with the influenza vaccine are required to receive a 2nd dose at least a month apart. The Health Dept. plans to return to administer the Flumist to those students who need their 2nd dose. No date has been scheduled as of yet for the 2nd dose. If for some reason your child missed receiving their flu vaccine at school you may take him/her to any Queen Anne’s Co. Health Dept. clinic and receive it for free.Those of you who wish to receive the Seasonal Flu vaccine may check out the Queen Anne’s Co. Health Dept. website at: www.qahealth.org , or call the office at: 410-758-0720 for clinic locations, dates, and times.With “Flu Season” near here are some guidelines to follow regarding student illnesses:**Students must be “fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication”, in order to return to school. If your child receives an antibiotic for strep throat, pink eye, or another contagious illness, they must take the medication for 24 hours before returning to school. Also, your child should not return to school for 24 hours after having diarrhea and or vomiting. These guidelines are in place to protect all students and staff. Thank you for your support.

Counselor’s Corner

October is National Bullying Prevention Month!

During the month of October, communities nationwide unite to educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. Many Americans historically viewed bullying as a childhood “rite of passage" and mistakenly believed that bullying "made kids tougher.” We now know that bullying has devastating effects, such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression. At SES, we value Respect! This means we include others, we share, we use kind words, and we make good choices about how to handle disagreements and conflict. Our four anti-bullying rules are simple: We will not bully others. We will try to help students who are bullied. We will try to include students who are left out. If we know someone is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and at home. During the month of October, students in all grades will be learning about the definition of bullying and ways to prevent bullying from happening in our school. On October 22nd, SES

and SMS will join together, along with schools throughout Queen Anne’s County, to participate in Unity Day, a special day devoted to raising awareness of bullying prevention. Orange is the official color of the anti-bullying movement, and you can participate in Unity Day too by wearing orange in the community and your place of work.

MARVELOUS MUSIC MEMO

Here are a few musical reminders for the month October. Upcoming Performance: Winter Concert: Wednesday, December 17th, 6:30 pm Winter Concert performers include the 2nd grade classes, the Winter Chorus (3rd & 4th grade students), and the Winter Recorder Club (4th grade students).Winter Chorus (3rd & 4th Grades):Letters will be going home mid-October regarding the Winter Chorus.The Winter Chorus is open to all 3rd & 4th grade students who are would like to sing and perform in the Winter Concert. The concert is on Wednesday, December 17th, at 6:30 pm. The permission form must be returned in order to participate. Winter Recorder Club:Letters will be going home mid-October regarding the Winter Recorder Club.The Winter Recorder Club is open to all 4th grade students who are would like to demonstrate the recorder skills we will be learning in the Winter Concert. The concert is on Wednesday, December 17th, at 6:30 pm. All students in recorder club must have their own recorder. The permission form must be returned in order to participate. 4th Grade Recorders:Recorders have been distributed in 4th Grade! If you still would like to purchase one, see Mr. Harrison for an order form. You can purchase one for $5.00. Having a recorder of your own is highly recommended!

Music Math MattersMath Tricks and Treats!

Join us October 29 when SES will host its first Math Tricks and Treats Family Night. We will have stations where families can learn different math tricks and children can earn treats. This event will be sponsored by Title I. Doors open at 6:30pm. Your family will travel together to different stations.The Title I Parent Planning Committee meets Oct.2 at 7:30am to figure out the details for this special night. Join us with your ideas! Help us make Math Tricks and Treats Night SPOOKTACKULAR!!! Helping your children in mathMany parents have asked for ways that they can help their children with math. They feel that math instruction has changed- and it has! But- some things never change in math. The FACTS!!!!The facts are a tool that children need to have mastered securely to be successful in math. Each grade has a set of facts that they should learn fluently.

Make games with facts- using playing cards, number cubes, and rhymes. Parent Involvement

The annual Title I Orientation Informational Dinner was held September 18, 2014. Thanks to the members of the Sudlersville Fire Department Auxiliary for providing the hall and the dinner. What a great community partnership! Parents had an opportunity to learn about the benefits to their students of being a School Wide Title I school. They had an opportunity to review and make input to the 2014-2015 draft Parent Involvement Plan and Family Compact. An opportunity will also be provided to those who were not able to attend.

The Pizza Party Kick Off for the Watch D.O.G.S. program will be held on Thursday, October 2nd. Invitations were sent home. Please RSVP as this is a very popular event at SES and we want to make sure there is enough pizza! We will have Watch D.O.G.S. who participated in the program last year speak about their

experience and encourage more positive male role models to sign up for this year. Also there is a possibility of a new activity this year. “Step up and sign up” on Oct. 2nd!!Look for invitations to the annual reading night. “Fall into Reading” will be held on Thursday, October 16th. We would like your help in planning the event. Please come to the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting on Thursday morning, Oct. 2nd and 8 a.m. if available. If not just give us a call.Volunteers - Please remember that you must sign in and out at the front office whenever you enter or leave the building. This is imperative for student safety! Wow! The first few weeks have school have been very productive in the art room. Aside from studying our first element of art, line, students have been focusing on Hispanic Heritage Month. Students have been creating Mariachi Guitars, Mayan Sun Dials, Sun Art, and patterned Serapes. Congratulations as well to those 18 students who completed the Summer Art Challenge.
