Dear Parents

Thank you for your support during what has been very busy and rewarding term of learning at Lindisfarne.

Just a reminder that next term we will move to a whole school newsletter on a weekly basis with both campuses making contributions each week. One of the most important things you can do each week is to read the newsletter, keeping informed of student and school achievements and coming events.

Last week I enjoyed welcoming a number of prospective families to our Sunshine Avenue Campus and Mahers Lane Campus. From the Chaplain Whole School NewsLast weekend, Mr Marquardt and I attended the Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Grafton. The word “synod” comes from the Greek “σύνοδος” (synodos) meaning “assembly” or “meeting”.

Our Synod occurs once a year, and is attended by all Clergy of the Diocese; all School Principals, as well as volunteer representatives from every parish in the Diocese. For those who are not aware, the Diocese of Grafton covers the geographical area from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads and as far west as Casino. We gather to discuss and hear about the good work going on right across the Diocese, as well as voting on legislative, organisational and financial issues that impact all of us. Think of it as the Anglican Churches’ version of parliament. The Synod is led by our Bishop, Sarah Macneil. We gathered on Friday night for a service of worship and the Bishop’s annual address and then reconvened on Saturday to go through the business that needed attention.

It might sound boring and mundane, but one of the things I like about Synod is the “gathering” as an extended community or family. It’s a reminder that, as an Anglican school community, Lindisfarne is a part of something much bigger than itself. Grafton Diocese has five schools and 26 parishes. The Anglican Church in Australia is made up of 23 dioceses across all states and territories and the Australian Church, in turn, is a part of the Anglican Communion in 39 provinces around the world.

Synod this year was an extremely productive, positive and unifying experience and Mr Marquardt and I look forward to continuing to represent Lindisfarne at meetings of our diocesan community.

I hope and pray that everyone has a safe and restful holiday break.

God bless.Rev Chad

Message from World Education ProgramA slice of your life this July - Host a WEP exchange student!

Welcoming an Italian or French speaking exchange student to your family is rewarding in so many ways. You can share your family's Aussie way of life with a student from another culture, connect to your community in exciting new ways, and bring the world into your home. And for the student you welcome into your family, you’re providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience they’ll treasure forever.

It's the simple things!

For our exchange students, it's the little things that make their stay so memorable: trying vegemite for the first time, attending our high school, seeing a kangaroo, koala or cockatoo. Hosting an exchange student doesn't take anything fancy — just a warm, welcoming spirit and the love you'd give to your own family.

WEP are currently looking for families interested in inviting an Italian or French speaking exchange student this July.

If this is of interest to your family, please contact Sylvia Kelly at WEP today to receive a detailed program and student information: www.wep.org.au, [email protected], 1300 884 733.

Primary School News Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend the child-led Preschool Portfolio Conferences this week.

The children were very proud to show their parents all the wonderful learning that has been happening in the first half of the year.

A big thank you also, to all the Preschool teachers for the effort they have put into producing these lovely portfolios that will continue to be built upon over the remainder of the year.

Days for Girls

Help girls around the world stay in school!

"What if not having sanitary supplies meant days without school? Days of isolation? Girls use leaves, mattress stuffing, newspaper, corn husks, rocks, anything they can find...but still miss up to two months of education and opportunity every year. It turns out this issue is a surprising but instrumental key to social change for women all over the world". Stage 3 News

This week, all Year 6 students participated in a training day in preparation for the commencement of our Peer Support program next term. Students worked in groups to build leadership skills. I was impressed with the student’s level of engagement and maturity and look forward to beginning this valuable program next term at the Sunshine Avenue Campus. Thank you to all staff who facilitated the day.

“I didn’t understand how much work goes into Peer Support! I now realise that a lot of time and effort goes into those lessons. In Peer Support I’m looking forward to working with the little kids and giving them stickers. I will definitely be welcoming to the little kids because I know how scary it can be”. Evie Parkinson

“It was a very fun day. I am looking forward to findingout my partner and working with them to teach kids values. I found the activities in the booklet will please smaller kids and help them grow to be a better person. I have been told by many parents, relatives and friends that I work well with kids. I enjoy working with kids so it will be a pleasure to be a Peer Support leader”. Cooper Robins

“Peer Support training was helpful as it told you all about what to do when someone feels sad or stressed and also helped you so you would be prepared with your partner for when you meet your group. I am really excited to be a leader of a small group of younger people but it is something I need more experience with because it is one of the things I have

“I enjoyed Peer Support training day and I learnt a lot of things. I’m looking forward to peer support because I think it would be a good learning experience and I want to be a good peer support leader. My favourite activity was when we were in a group and we had to cross the river with only three pieces of newspaper. At first I thought it would be easy but it was a bit harder than I thought. It involved a lot of cooperation and teamwork. I also learnt a lot about active listener and what is is to be listening and an active listener”. Sophie Conway-Rusk

RACI National Titration Competition Regional HeatsOn Monday 20 June Lindisfarne sent five teams, each consisting of three HSC Chemistry students to Southern Cross University in Lismore to compete against ten other schools from the Northern Rivers in the heats of the RACI Australian National TitrationCompetition. Below is a report from one of our students, Brayton Goodall.

“Twenty one teams of three fought it out at the SCU - Lismore campus for the 2016 Regional Titration Competition. The chemists competing for timeless glory were put straight to the test after Dr Lachlan Yee reminded us of safe practises. The victory conditionwas simple; be the team with the most accurate value for the concentration of acetic acid, otherwise known as vinegar. Each team member would have to perform an analysis of different samples of aceticacid. But, in order to find the four decimal point valuefor acetic acid, a titration would first have to be performed to standardise a solution of sodium hydroxide against a solution of known concentration of hydrochloric acid. We were judged on mathematical precision and accuracyof results. The win went to The Three Radicals (Alexandra Robinson, Corey Potter and Brayton Goodall) a Lindisfarne Triad of Borromean brilliance!”

Congratulations to our Northern Rivers Champions! We look forward to them plying their analytical skills in the national finals later in the year.

Science News CAPA NewsMusic @ Sunshine AvenueA reminder that the choir and the string orchestra will be performing at the Murwillumbah Performing Arts Festival next week. All students are required to wear formal uniform, have polished shoes and neat and tidy hair, as they will be representing Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School in the wider community.

There is an amendment to the choir times published in last week’s newsletter. The choir will be performingin section MPR2 on Monday 27 June. They are required to meet Ms Ross and Mrs Waltersat the Murwillumbah Civic Centre no laterthan 11.30am for a 11.45am start.

The string orchestra will be performing on Tuesday 28 June in section MPR10. They are required to meet Ms Ross and Mrs Davidson at the MurwillumbahCivic Centre no later than 10.30am so that all instruments can be tuned before their performance.

Twilight ConcertLast Thursday students enrolled in our instrumentalprogram were given the opportunity to perform at the Twilight Concert. Twilight concerts give emerginginstrumentalists a real life audience to perform to so that they can develop both their performanceand concert etiquette skills. It also allows the instrumental staff to showcase those students who have shown commitment to weekly lessonsand regular practise throughout the term.

String Orchestra and Choir ConcertOn Tuesday both the string orchestra and choir had the opportunity to perform for their peers. This was the first time the string orchestra had performed for an audience. They are to be congratulated for their excellent attention to their conductor, Mrs Susan Davidson, and their developing string playing technique. The choir also sang beautifully and it gave them the chance to rehearse their new piece ‘The Little Fish’ before Monday’s performance at Murwillumbah.

On both campuses students have been working tirelessly throughout Semester One on their choreographed dance pieces, which culminatedin all dance students performing on Thursdayin the K-12 Dance Recital. HSC Dance studentswere also able to showcase their class assessment‘works’ at the event. This included HSC Dance students performing themselves, along with ‘works’ they had choreographed and taught to a younger student at the school.

Stage 6 Drama and Dance ShowcaseYear 11 and 12 Dance and Drama students treated audience members to a memorable evening last Tuesday at their annual Showcase. The Showcasesampled student projects from the past six months of their courses as well as providing valuable feedbackfor Year 12 students as they embark upon final preparations for their Higher School Certificate practical examinations.

What was most evident on the evening was the degree of effort and passion shown by each performerin the pursuit of their own creativity. All students should be proud of the amount of time, research andrehearsal they have poured into their works and the high standard of skill they demonstrated. More importantly they are to be applauded for their ability to let go of certainty and expose their ideas and inner selves for public scrutiny and appreciation as they work to further improve and refine their skills.

Hospitality NewsMost of us have been affected by cancer in some way. It is estimated that over 130,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Australiain 2016. Advances in research and treatmenthas meant that the survival rates have increased by 30% over the last two decades and more

than 60% of patients will survive more than five years after diagnosis. Cancer Council's, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is a chance for Australians to get together and raise money for a great cause.

In support of this research and treatment for cancersufferers, Year 10 Food Technology and Year 12 Hospitality prepared some yummy delights for the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Friday 10 June. This year, the School raised $760 for the cause. The Open team performed valiantly throughout the day, finishing with two wins out of their four matches - all of which were close battles. The Division B team stepped up demonstrating their newly learnt skills, bringinghome one win and two draws across their four games. All the boys should be congratulated on their commitment to training and the resilience and sportsmanship shown on the field. A big thank you to all parents who supported Lindisfarne and to Brett Glover for assisting with coaching on the day.

Good luck to the Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies class who compete in the Gold Coast 10km on 2 July.

We wish the School’s Tweed Netball players, who compete in the Queensland State Championships on 8 - 10 July, the best of luck; Ellie Engel (13As), Kaiya Liddiard (14As) and Georgia Maynard (15As).

Trivia NightThe sold-out trivia night on Friday 17 June held at Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club was a massive hit where everyone got a good dose of humour. There were laughs aplenty, with games like paper plane flying and heads 'n tails bringing out the competitive spirit in many. A 50th birthday was celebrated on the night too.

A massive thank you to Robyn Butel and Michelle Whiticker for convening the event, to Matt Bedford for the MC role, to the Year 12 students who acted as answer runners, and other staff assisting. The healthy rivalry between teaching staff tables was great to see and they did shine on the results’ board.

Thanks also to the generous support of gifts and prizes from the Lotus Skin Institute, Salon de Sal, Hayden and Tanya Boyle, Matt Kane (Ground Control Coffee and BALTER brewery), Tina Jenkins (Tina’s Style Centre at Kingscliff), Virginia Freeman, Master Meats (Tweed Centro) and Scales Seafood.

Kindergarten - Year 4 Fun Athletics CarnivalToday the P&F served a record 250 meat and vegetable skewers at the fun athletics carnival. Thanks to those parents who helped cut fruit, cook on the bbq and serve the happy customers - your assistance is very much appreciated.

FunFest 2017The date is set and the rides are booked for next years FunFest on Saturday, 2 September. The P&F is looking for a coordinator to get the event planning started. There’s a very well versed script to assist any person who would like to entertain this idea.

For a no-obligation chat about what the role involves, please call me on 0424 779 452, or email [email protected].
