Stawell Community set to become Australia's first eSmarttown

The eSmart Schools team, met with local school principals in October 2013 in response to increasingcomplaints about online bullying in the town. The team returned in December to deliver a full day ofeSmart training to over 120 teachers from several Stawell and District schools, and on July 23 2014the Stawell community came together to discuss how their town could embrace cybersafety andtackle cyberbullying, and become Australia’s first eSmart town.

Grampians Community Health’s School FocusedYouth Service Coordinator Maurice Billi said thatseeing eSmart in action in schools providedfurther proof that more needed to be done usingthe communities’ greatest resource – youngpeople themselves.

“After seeing eSmart in our local schools inStawell, we realised that young people are ourgreatest resource when it comes to cybersafety. They know the latest technology, and they knowwhat their friends are doing online – the good andthe bad. Our job is to learn from them andsupport them to ensure they are safe andsupported online.”

Getting smart with eSmartVictorian teacher, Aaron Davis, recently blogged about his school’s eSmart journey, reflecting on‘growing pains’, ‘solutions and fixes’ and the ‘next chapter’.

“I recently wrote a post reflecting on the apparent 'failure' of the digital revolution. What camethrough from both my own reflections and the comments provided by others is that the reason forthis supposed failure lies whole-heartedly with leadership. Whether it be at a local school-based levelor at a governmental level, there has been a litany of errors. One of issues that often arises with theuse of technology in schools are the ramifications for staff and students as their sense of citizenshiphas evolved to incorporate the digital realm. One organisation set up to allevate such stresses hasbeen the eSmart Schools Program”. Read more.

Status school spotlightThese case study responses are drawn from schools that have achieved eSmart status in 2014. Relating to a specific domain or attribute, can you describe an initiative or practice thathas not worked particularly well, and how did you overcome this challenge?

Attribute 4.2 ‘Teacher modelling of smart, safe, and responsible use of technologies’

Our staff do their best to model the smart, safe and responsible use of technologies at all times, andexpect our school’s students to do the same. However, we found that some staff required support inbuilding their knowledge and understanding of potential cyber-risks.

During the last 18 months, our staff have:

Attended forums conducted by the local district cybersafety committee, aimed to increasecybersafety knowledge within our district communities.Been involved in class visits by our local police to build awareness of cybersafety issues.Participated in Professional Development to build cybersafety knowledge.Participated in informal discussions with younger staff and colleagues regarding cybersafetyissues.

Building staff knowledge and understanding of cybersafety will be an ongoing element of our eSmartjourney. The use of technology and the problems it creates will continue to grow and will constantlyprovide challenges for our staff and school to overcome.

For more information on how to get your staff engaged visit our online training page.
