Education Week Open Day Education Week open day will take place on Thursday 8 August in Week 3

The theme for 2019 Education Week is lsquoEvery Student Every Voicersquo It is a celebration of student empowerment and how the NSW public education system gives students the skills they need in order to have and express a voice during their own educational journey and as engaged global citizens

Lake Cathie Public School will celebrate the wonderful learning and cultural opportunities our students have and share this with our school community

We welcome you to our school to share in this celebration

The Education Week assembly will commence at 930am in the hall

Please join us for morning tea between 1045am- 1130am

Open classroom and displays of learning will occur between 1130am-1230pm

We look forward to seeing you all for a fabulous day

Staffing UpdateAs we start another hard working term for students staff and our parent groups we welcome Mr Jacob Easey to our school taking Mrs Cowan and Mrs Bohlscheidrsquos class For the remainder of the year we will call his class 56E We also confirm that Mrs Drury will remain on Mrs Eganrsquos class as she continues her leave until the end of the year We will call this class 2D Renaming classes is not a light decision but will allow for a changed sense of ownership and direction for both the students and teachers We welcome final year teacher training students completing their internship from the University of Newcastle ndash Miss Anishah Burnes on 1F and Miss Erin Corless on 3H We extend a very warm welcome to each of these new staff members to our great school

Meet the teacherParents and carers of students in 56E (previously 56CB) are invited to attend a lsquoMeet the teacherrsquo session with Mr Jacob Easey who is relieving on 56CB while Mrs Cowan is on leave The session will be held on Wednesday 7 August at 530pm in the classroom

Band Camp Wishing all of the children that are heading off to Band Camp on Monday all the very best An exciting three days working with children from other schools in our area

An amazing opportunity for the children to build on their musical skills as well as their social skills

LockdownLate last term the children had a practice Lockdown before recess

We do this to ensure that all students staff parents and visitors remain in a safe and secure location in the event of a possible personalschool threat or critical incident and that exposure to danger and possible risk of harm is minimised

All the children responded well and our Work Health and Safety policy requirements are successfully up to date

Koala SMART project ndash UpdateYear 3 and 4 students have been very busy working towards their solution to how we might save the koala Last term students identified areas they would contribute towards this solution (all will be revealed during Education Week) One of our groups are fundraising to support the Koala Hospital

On Tuesday 6th August students will be holding a lsquoBuild a Cupcakersquo fundraiser Students can order a plain vanilla cupcake and then choose decorations and icing to lsquobuildrsquo their cupcake Order forms have come home this week We will also be holding a guessing competition throughout week 2 and 3 For 50c students and parents can guess how many Caramello Koalas there are in the container

Please helps us raise some money to support the care and research of the Koala Hospital and please drop by the Stage 2 display on Open Day to see our complete solution to lsquoHow can we save the koalarsquo

Staff Development Day ndash A day of learning for teachersOn Monday 22nd July staff were joined by 80 teachers from local schools in a day of learning sharing and reflection Lake Cathie PS hosted Melbourne-based educators from the Education Changemakers (httpseducationchangemakerscom) who presented a dynamic relevant and interesting keynote around the future of work and learning Teachers then worked in school groups to develop projects for students to engage with that would build transferrable skills and capabilities whilst also focusing on real-world problems and needs

Spelling BeeOver the following 2 weeks students in stage 2 and 3 will be involved in the Premierrsquos Spelling Bee During class students will participate in a spelling bee and winners will progress to stage finals Our area final will be held at Forster Public School on 3rd September

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition

On Thursday 4 July a team of four students travelled to Hastings Public School to participate in The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition 2019 North Coast Local Finals

This was the first time Lake Cathie Public School has participated in this state wide competition

The team worked so hard in the lead up to the finals

Congratulations to Ciana Jones Year 3 Summer Waite Year 4 Mikayla Haste Year 5 and Eva McKerrow Year 6 who represented our school with pride enthusiasm and school spirit They all delivered fabulous prepared speeches with sincerity and conviction

They also worked hard to present an impromptu speech after five minutes preparation time

Congratulations to a wonderful and committed team of very talented students

Our school public speaking competition will be held in Semester 2 I am looking forward to seeing and hearing more of our students shine on stage

Peer SupportLast term our wonderful Stage 3 Peer Support leaders led lsquoGetting to know yoursquo Peer Support sessions with their group made up of students from Kindergarten to Year 4

The Stage 3 leaders are doing a fabulous job to lead and manage their groups whilst teaching them some very valuable life lessons and social skills

Our whole school will be continuing Peer Support sessions next week The children will be participating in a new module Moving Forward which focuses on resilience The experiences in the module help children to identify their qualities and strengths develop skills respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges

In the next session the children will establish connections with the other members of their group and develop their group agreement to enable them to work well together The children will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses

You might like to discuss with your child what they can do to help them take an active role in Peer Support

Life Education ndash Harold has ArrivedYou may have noticed (or heard) that the Life education van has arrived at Lake Cathie This week and Monday next week students in all classes will visit the van to learn about healthy living with Miss Leanne and Harold the giraffe The van provides an interactive learning environment for students and teachers to learn about eating healthy medicines and building positive friendships

Any merchandise that has been ordered by students will be handed out to students either today or on Monday As a non-for-profit organisation the sale of these items supports the Life education program

Volunteer requirementsParent helpers and volunteers to our school are required to complete a Department of Education lsquoDeclaration for volunteersrsquo and provide 100 points of identification prior to their first visit Further information can be found on our school website

Parent helpers and volunteers are also encouraged to obtain a Working With Children Check which can be used towards the 100 points of ID Information on how to go through this process is available at

VolunteersThank you to all the wonderful volunteers that have volunteered their time to help in the canteen this term

We are struggling to fill our canteen days on FRIDAYS We desperately need your help on Fridays as it is our busiest day of the week I am unable to do these days on my own If you would like to work alongside another parent grandparent carer I am more than happy for you to pair up

The canteen provides our volunteers with lunch and a drink and as much tea and coffee as you like Your children love to see family members in the school canteen If you can spare some time whether it be once a month or once a term it will help us immensely By volunteering it is also a great way to meet other families within the school community

If you would like to volunteer please see me in the canteen on Mondays Thursdays or Fridays or leave a message at the front office

Koala SMART project ndash UpdateYear 3 and 4 students have been very busy working towards their solution to how we might save the koala Last term students identified areas they would contribute towards this solution (all will be revealed during Education Week) One of our groups are fundraising to support the Koala Hospital

On Tuesday 6th August students will be holding a lsquoBuild a Cupcakersquo fundraiser Students can order a plain vanilla cupcake and then choose decorations and icing to lsquobuildrsquo their cupcake Order forms have come home this week We will also be holding a guessing competition throughout week 2 and 3 For 50c students and parents can guess how many Caramello Koalas there are in the container

Please helps us raise some money to support the care and research of the Koala Hospital and please drop by the Stage 2 display on Open Day to see our complete solution to lsquoHow can we save the koalarsquo

Staff Development Day ndash A day of learning for teachersOn Monday 22nd July staff were joined by 80 teachers from local schools in a day of learning sharing and reflection Lake Cathie PS hosted Melbourne-based educators from the Education Changemakers (httpseducationchangemakerscom) who presented a dynamic relevant and interesting keynote around the future of work and learning Teachers then worked in school groups to develop projects for students to engage with that would build transferrable skills and capabilities whilst also focusing on real-world problems and needs

Spelling BeeOver the following 2 weeks students in stage 2 and 3 will be involved in the Premierrsquos Spelling Bee During class students will participate in a spelling bee and winners will progress to stage finals Our area final will be held at Forster Public School on 3rd September

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition

On Thursday 4 July a team of four students travelled to Hastings Public School to participate in The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition 2019 North Coast Local Finals

This was the first time Lake Cathie Public School has participated in this state wide competition

The team worked so hard in the lead up to the finals

Congratulations to Ciana Jones Year 3 Summer Waite Year 4 Mikayla Haste Year 5 and Eva McKerrow Year 6 who represented our school with pride enthusiasm and school spirit They all delivered fabulous prepared speeches with sincerity and conviction

They also worked hard to present an impromptu speech after five minutes preparation time

Congratulations to a wonderful and committed team of very talented students

Our school public speaking competition will be held in Semester 2 I am looking forward to seeing and hearing more of our students shine on stage

Peer SupportLast term our wonderful Stage 3 Peer Support leaders led lsquoGetting to know yoursquo Peer Support sessions with their group made up of students from Kindergarten to Year 4

The Stage 3 leaders are doing a fabulous job to lead and manage their groups whilst teaching them some very valuable life lessons and social skills

Our whole school will be continuing Peer Support sessions next week The children will be participating in a new module Moving Forward which focuses on resilience The experiences in the module help children to identify their qualities and strengths develop skills respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges

In the next session the children will establish connections with the other members of their group and develop their group agreement to enable them to work well together The children will discuss an example of a challenging situation and some resilient and non-resilient responses

You might like to discuss with your child what they can do to help them take an active role in Peer Support

Life Education ndash Harold has ArrivedYou may have noticed (or heard) that the Life education van has arrived at Lake Cathie This week and Monday next week students in all classes will visit the van to learn about healthy living with Miss Leanne and Harold the giraffe The van provides an interactive learning environment for students and teachers to learn about eating healthy medicines and building positive friendships

Any merchandise that has been ordered by students will be handed out to students either today or on Monday As a non-for-profit organisation the sale of these items supports the Life education program

VolunteersThank you to all the wonderful volunteers that have volunteered their time to help in the canteen this term

We are struggling to fill our canteen days on FRIDAYS We desperately need your help on Fridays as it is our busiest day of the week I am unable to do these days on my own If you would like to work alongside another parent grandparent carer I am more than happy for you to pair up

The canteen provides our volunteers with lunch and a drink and as much tea and coffee as you like Your children love to see family members in the school canteen If you can spare some time whether it be once a month or once a term it will help us immensely By volunteering it is also a great way to meet other families within the school community

If you would like to volunteer please see me in the canteen on Mondays Thursdays or Fridays or leave a message at the front office
