TWIN DYKE CONCEPT
Traditional solution
€ 25,5 million€ 11,1 millionHiring area in between•Temporal water storage•Cockels and saltvegetable growth•Catching sediment
€ 2,8 million(normal rent)
€ 4,4 million
Totally: € 18,3 million!Savings € 7 million
Twin dike solutionExcavate clay for reinforcement surface protection layerAnd construction of inland twin dike
inland Slicks - cockels seaside
Physical system
1. Tidal area, inland earth dike,
softer change in gradients
2. Inward surface level approx.-0.5
mNAP, tide: + 1,4 and – 1,8 m
NAP, sea level rise 25 cm until
2045
3. Storm surges of 45 h, waves up
to 6,5 m +NAPLandside dike dimensions: elevation4 m+NAP, slopes 1:3, grass on claycover, 3 m wide inspection road on top, reinforcements both sides 3 m wide at + 2 m NAP
Seaside dike dimensions +8m NAP elevation, 1:3 slope, outer lining to+3.5 m NAP, inward reinforcement10 m wide with inspectionroad,altitude+3m, top water discharge 55 l/s/m ; 2,7 km length

Potential benefits
- Water safety
- Quick reinforcement procedures
- Economic diversification
- Increased value production
- Cheaper clay construction
material
- Enhanced conditions for N2000
- Refuge-areas for birds
- Feeding areas for birds
- Lower costs from € 25 to € 18
million
- Revenu from economic growth
……………. behind the fence it is all sunshine
Let’s play a game!
A Twin Dike in your area

…… how are we proceeding in crossing the fence ?
The pie riddle
1. One “piece of cake” → “water
safety”
2. Inventarising other pieces of cake
which could be combined : framing
as “win-win”
3. Make the pie bigger & imagine
the entire pie
.. or, in our case
Your pie is bigger, now:
4. Grow enthousiasm & dedication
with your stakeholders
5. Find sources of finance
6. Figure out the conditions
7. Cut the pie so everyone can enjoy
INCENTIVES and Committmentamong decisionmakers
High Level Goals :
- Delta Programme : National Policy lines
Commisioner – Minister/Secretaryinteraction
- Momentum of first examples multi-approach
- First image of lower costs : two pilot concepts
Regional Level : increasing mutualdependancy
- Step by step approach aboutcommittment : Letter of mutual interest to investigate
Letter of intent to realise and createpermits
Perspectives of being applicable elsewhere
Red coloured areas : 45 km
In South-west Netherlands : additionally 55 km. Savings € 100-300 million

Lanstyrelsen Skane: protecting coasts, streams and wetlands
10 - SwedenCoastal and Natural Catchment Pilot: The Lanstyrelsen Skane: protecting coasts, streams and wetlands (WP3.7 and
WP4.4)
Location: catchment area of Råån, Helsingborg area, Skane
Main goals:
Protection and restoration of river and marine habitats for counteracting erosion and flooding:
o River:
• studies about effects of constructed measures (two stage ditches, wetlands) compared to channelized streams → monitoring of
biological structures, biodiversity, hydrological functions
• methodology to identify flood risk prone locations
o Coastal:
• studies on the role of eelgrass meadows to reduce beach erosion
• studies on planned retreat
• coast management guidelines
Stakeholders involved:
National (e.g. Swedish Agency for Marine and Water management, Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, etc.), Regional (Skåne
Region government), Local (municipalities, NGOs)

Next steps – using and improving guideline for exploring
up-scaling
▪ Contract EcoShape WP 5 team
▪ Analyze Twin Dike project
▪ Detailing AP Up-Scaling
▪ Improve, generalize guideline
▪ Involve WP3 and WP4
Let’s get ready for a final poll
