UOP XCeed™ Bioreactor for Selenium Removal
UOP XCeed Bioreactor Technology
With 100 years of experience removing
contaminants, UOP provides proven
wastewater treatment solutions that
improve operating efficiency.
UOP’s XCeedTM bioreactor technology incorporates simple design
principles and unique microbial growth support media for treating
the most challenging industrial wastewater streams. This advanced
technology provides robust and cost-effective operations while
minimizing sludge production and energy consumption.

Features Benefits
• Rapid reduction of selenate and selenite • Increased microbial solids retention time• Low hydraulic retention time• Stable microbial population
• Meet low ppb level discharge requirements• Resistant to upstream process upsets• Consistent effluent quality• Minimal sludge production• Small footprint
High efficiency in a compact designXCeed utilizes a packed bed, semi-plug flow
design that provides long solids retention times
while minimizing hydraulic retention time. The
increased solids retention time results in a high
biomass to feed ratio that promotes biological
oxygen demand (BOD) removal while minimizing
sludge formation. High concentrations of
immobilized bacteria provide natural resistance
to, and fast recovery from, process upsets.
The high microbioal density and flexible process
configuration also allows for a small system
footprint.
Selenium removal Traditionally, selenate (SeO4
2-) and selenite
(SeO32-) are difficult to remove from industrial
wastewater using physical-chemical processes.
For example, iron precipitation does not meet
discharge requirements at low parts per billion
(ppb) levels and has high sludge volume.
However, selenate and selenite are readily
reduced to insoluble elemental selenium by
microbial reduction. Both can be reduced to
elemental selenium more rapidly when a diverse
bacterial flora is present in the bioreactor. If
other substrates such as dissolved oxygen
or nitrate are present, the bacteria will
preferentially grow on them because they
generate more energy. To remove selenium
biologically, oxygen and nitrate must be
removed to establish anoxic conditions.
The XCeed bioreactor system can be configured
with aerobic and anaerobic sections to treat
all forms of soluble selenium species. High
concentrations of immobilized biomass in the
XCeed system allow for a faster reaction and
smaller footprint.
