The chess world lost one of its most colorful figures on *ugust 4- 277/ with the #assing of Claude8. Bloodgood from lung cancer at the age of 99. :e was &orn (laus 8ri;;ell Bluttgutt III on )ul$ /4-/ico to ,erman nationals. :e learned chess from his father at a $oung age. Bothhis skill and loe for the game grew ?uickl$- and soon &ecame a #assion that followed himthroughout his life.

Claude s#ent most of his earl$ chess career earning mone$ as a hustler. 'uring this time- hedeelo#ed a taste for unorthodo> and generall$ unsound" o#enings filled with tra#s and aggressielines. These o#enings were- of course- ideall$ suited to &oth his chosen #rofession and also to hisst$le of #la$. :e continued to #la$ these o#enings throughout his life.Bloodgood+s tournament chess career &egan in /

that Bloodgood was committing ratings fraud. This was- of course- not the case as Bloodgood hadalerted the @C8 to the #ro&lem long &efore he eer reached the stratos#heric leel of 2972.Bloodgood was also ?uick to admit to an$one who would &other asking that he was oer rated. :istrue a&ilit$ at that time in his life was #ro&a&l$ high e>#ert class to low master leel. *t his #rime- inthe earl$ A7+s- he was #ro&a&l$ close to senior master strength.

This is UON n> ? and &"m so e@cited about it. +eo#le are sending games and articles and&"m grateful for that. Aor instance & recei%ed Be% Zilbermints" suggestion for a Reader"sBetters column in each issue. He wrote me:CWith a 0eadersN Letters column- more #eo#le might &e interested in Goining. The$ will seethat the$ can e>#ress their iews in their letters. The column lets them hae their o#inionsheard.F& lie this suggestion and from the ne@t issue there will be room for our own %iews soDou"re all in%ited to e-mail me!.Earl Roberts also ga%e the following useful suggestions:

I would like to take this time to #ut to $ou some ideas for $our consideration on o3.

/. *s I think I suggested the er$ first time I re#lied to $ou- some consideration should &e giento the sco#e of o3 as far as what it coers. I think the title of the newsletter s#eaks foritself &ut what is an unorthodo> o#ening e>actl$O %.( sure- the likes of /.g4 and /.e4 3aAstand out &ut it could &e argued &$ some /.e4 3cA does not come under such a categor$.Better still- what a&out the older o#enings such as the Mu;io ,am&it from the (ings,am&it" OO It is so rare these da$s it ma$ &e classed as unorthodo>.

    2. What I would reall$ like to &e #u&lished with the o3 is a conersion ta&le of #ieceallocations. 8or e>am#le P ueen in !nglish &ut what ha##ens when a ,erman o3reader comes to look at gameO :ow does he know what is OO

. I would like to suggest that games su&mitted as articles &$ o3 readers &e in one languageonl$. %ne of the games $ou sent me started with * P &isho# then half wa$ through Be?ualled Bisho#. This ma$ confuse some of o3Ns readers- I know it confused me while Iwas #roofing it.

Earl"s suggestion o#inion are #articularl #oignant as he checs all the material before it"s#ublished. & agree with him and & would answer as follows:

    1. ,hat are unorthodo@ o#enings and what are not This is a %er good Fuestion.,hen & started with UON 1stissue & thought UON should deal onlywith Unorthodo@O#enings & was interested in) such as: 1.g?0 1.Nc90 1.e? gG .d? NfG0 1.d? e401.Nh90 1.e? NcG. Arom the subscribers" e-mail & recei%ed after that issue &understood #eo#le would ha%e been interested in a wider range of unorthodo@o#enings e%en if & didn"t lie them! $o & decided to balance m fa%ourite"s o#eningswith subscribers" fa%ourites. ' own definition of an unorthodo@ o#ening isconnected to rarel #laed o#enings. $o the 'u(io gambit in the /ings gambit issurel welcome in UON as well as 1.e? e4 .Nf9 NcG 9.b4 a4 as it"s rarel #laed.+erha#s it"s different with 1.e? NcG which & consider Fuite orthodo@ in the mainlines) but & wish to #ut in in UON because 8a; man subscribers lieI#la it 8b; it"sone of m fa%ourite re#lies to 1.e? 8c; it"s still #laed Fuite rarel or much less than1.e? NfG d; $ome lines are reall wild 8for e@am#le 1.e? NcG .Nf9 f4;. $o let"swelcome it unless there are trans#osition to orthodo@ o#enings lie $#anish) +ircand so on.

. & agree with Earl that if a game notation starts in English) the notation must be thesame in all the game. $o for instance Jueen 8or J; must be J throughout all thegame and should not become 6 8&talian and german notation for Jueen;. &f#ossible & as that all the games should be sent in algebric English notation. &understand that this might be a #roblem for someone so we"ll acce#t games in

german and &talian as well 8no Ka#anese #lease ; with the abo%e mentionedreFuirement. Than ou in ad%ance dear readers for our hel# to im#ro%e UON.
