APRIL 2020 PAGE 1 The first quarter of 2020 was full of excitement as the University kicked off its centennial anniversary and began a year full of events that an internal committee had been diligently working on for the better part of two years. Then the Coronavirus crisis hit and all plans and procedures were adjusted on a daily, if not hourly, basis. We all watched with concern as the COVID-19 pandemic made a significant impact to our state and nation. We are charting new territory as we respond to the rapidly- evolving public health crisis with our highest priority remaining on the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and community. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton mandated that all K-12 schools in the state close and transition to online learning in early March. Then, on March 22, a “Stay at Home” order was announced to go into effect on Monday, March 23 at 9:00pm. Both of those mandates led the University to make an unprecedented decision – all classes for all students would be run entirely online for Spring Quarter and March Session of 2020. Within days, UNOH transitioned from a vibrant university campus to experiencing the challenge of delivering remote education to our entire student population. Students previously scheduled for traditional courses Colleges of: Business, Health Professions, and Occupational Professions would still ‘meet’ during their normal class time, but those meetings would take place virtually from the comfort of everyone’s homes. Students in the College of Applied Technologies were all moved to general education courses already required as part of their program. These web- enhanced courses would not have live meetings, but videos and other elements would be loaded into their course modules along with due dates and opportunities for live discussions throughout the class. Students in technical programs who no longer required any general education courses were scheduled for their next technical term to start on May 11, 2020. On Campus housing remains open for students who wished to stay, be it for employment reasons or no other feasible housing opportunity. The University is continuing all business operations, but buildings are closed to the general public. A majority of staff will be working remotely. During this time, email is the preferred form of communication and all personnel are being urged to check in often to their department inbox to handle any student, parent, faculty, or staff concerns. These are extraordinary times, and we are grateful for how our UNOH Family has come together to overcome this difficult situation. UNOH has been tested before, and our spirit, while dampened during these difficult days, is strong. Although the experiences of our past are radically different from those of today, one consistent lesson remains through them all: We must care for and have faith in one another. There is more work to be done, but we are in this together to do our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Your health and safety remain the University’s top priority. On February 29th, I boarded my first ever airplane and flew down to Miami, Florida for an opportunity to volunteer at Super Bowl LIV. With the fear of flying aside, I was excited for the sunshine and the experiences that lay ahead. After we landed in Miami and got situated in our AirBnb, it was off to pick up our credentials and gear. That evening we were able to relax and rest up for the long days ahead.

The next two days, we volunteered at the Super Bowl Experience located at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The organization we worked for was called NFL FansFirst!. Basically, we were sent to run different interaction zones for fans. We ran activities such as FedEx Air and Ground Challenge, Bridgestone two minute drill, and NFL extra points kick issued by Barclays. We interacted with so many different fans over the course of those two days and even had the chance to meet some famous people. Doug Flutie, former quarterback in the NFL, who also played in the Canadian Football League, and United States Football League, joined in on the Air Challenge. Brandon Marshall, current wide receiver in the NFL, participated in the

two minute drill. And rapper Lil’ Jon tried his hand, or should I say foot, at the extra point kick.

FansFirst! is all about exactly what its name says, putting fans first. Their mission statement, to sum it up, is to provide all those involved with the highest quality of sports and entertainment that is consistent with their own values. It was all about creating excitement for the fans and giving them lifetime memories. My personal favorite moments were seeing the young kids walking through the convention center. Seeing the smile on their faces when they made the football through the target or made the touchdown sign light up was very special. It was all about making fans happy enjoying their short time spent with us.

The fourth day was the day we were really waiting for as we finally got to enter the stadium. That day we worked for an organization called OLE, or On Location Events. That organization was in charge of hosting numerous pregame parties around the stadium that fans could purchase tickets for. Our job was to help people find their way to these parties, also known as “wayfinding”. We were set up around the outside of the stadium holding signs pointing towards the parties. It was all about having a smile on our faces and offering a helping hand. We saw some pretty cool people this day as well! Peter from the Bachelor and Michael Vick made his way past us and Urban Meyer and his wife asked Mrs. Etzkorn for directions!

Overall, the experience I earned from this trip is unexplainable. I learned so many interesting things over the course of our stay

in Miami. We are given so many awesome hands-on experiences by being part of the Sport Marketing and Management program at UNOH and this was definitely one of the most amazing ones! I asked some of my fellow classmates who took the trip with me what they took away from this experience.

“Since volunteering, I learned a lot about how the whole facility worked in the days leading up to the Super Bowl. I learned there are so many things that need to go into an event that is that big in size. Being a volunteer was a way for us to help out with everything in a way.” - Andrew Boone, Junior

“I think it showed how much it actually takes to put on an event of that scale. From the staff working at all the events and the volunteers to the caterers and the people that set up all the structures, it’s crazy to see the actual scale of it all because you can’t fully grasp it unless you’re there.” - Clayton Longo, Senior

All in all, I want to thank everyone who made this trip possible. The biggest thank you to Professor Gunder and Professor Etzkorn for setting up this opportunity, UNOH and Dean Fitzpatrick for backing us every step of the way, all of those who helped out through all our fundraisers (especially Professors Hooks, Strouse, and McMurray), and everyone else who helped out along the way. None of this would have been possible without every single one of you!

If you want to get involved with this awesome experience, and you are a junior or senior in the Sports Marketing and Management program, don’t wait, email Professor Gunder or Professor Etzkorn, and you just might get to travel to Tampa, Florida for next year’s Super Bowl!

The University of Northwestern Ohio was presented with a check for $15,000 yesterday thanks to a grant from a local company. The grant, from the PPG Foundation, will be designated for improvements to the newly renovated Robotics and Automation Lab. Presenting the check to UNOH President Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis, was Deb Goldenetz, Business Process Manager at PPG Coatings Services.

This is the second year that UNOH has received a grant from the PPG Foundation. Last year the UNOH Robotics and Automation program was the recipient of a $10,000 grant. These new grant funds are earmarked for the Phase 2 development of a fabrication area in the Robotics building. Specifically, it will aid in the addition of an Industrial Fabrication course that will be offered to students in August, 2020. This course is designed to teach student the fundamentals of fabrication by using industrial metalworking equipment.

Students will learn fabrication skills through practical application by creating several metal working projects. Students will learn to use sheet metal shears and brakes, MIG and TIG welders, saws, grinders, power tools, drill presses, plasma cutters, and various other fabrication equipment. The fabrication area will enhance student education in the Robotics & Automation Technologies Degree program.

Since the start of the Robotics & Automation program at UNOH in January 2016, the program has educated more than 200 students and in that time, there have been more than 100 graduates. To accommodate this growth, the Robotics building doubled in size last year with a nearly 8,000 square foot expansion. This expansion project included renovating an existing shop into two more classrooms while the entirety of the new addition was dedicated to lab and shop space. This addition allows for the instruction of 240 students daily.

$15,000 GRANT

Sometimes opportunities are spare of the moment signals from the universe. Other times, opportunities are presented in weekly emails coming from your University's Dean. This year, I had the chance to attend the SEMA show with a group of exceptional individuals from the University of Northwestern Ohio.

The organization’s missions is, “A love for cars, trucks and SUVs is the motivating force behind the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). This trade association consists of a diverse group of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishing companies, auto restorers, street-rod builders, restylers, car clubs, race teams and more.”

At the show I attended seminars hosted by the SEMA Businesswomen's Network (SBN) touching on leadership and entrepreneurship. I met some of the biggest names in the automotive aftermarket and high performance industry, and learned about their paths to success. I shared hors d’oeuvres with top fuel dragster team owners and drivers.

My fellow student ambassadors and I spent time collecting and distributing business cards and resumes with people who have blazed trails for the trade world. We watched new product showcases and saw countless one of a kind vehicles that people put their hearts into. I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity I was awarded to attend this event.

The SEMA Scholarship is open to students pursuing a career in the automotive industry. Whether it is in fabrication, racing, or business law, SEMA has a place for you. Some of the things the scholarship board looks for in a student’s application include: GPA, industry involvement, and your plans to better the industry. Scholarships award up to $5,000 for tuition or loan forgiveness.

UNOH takes it a step further by selecting and sponsoring some the scholarship recipients to attend the SEMA show in Las Vegas. The SEMA scholarship committee is currently accepting applications through March 1, 2020. Watch your student email for more information on some of these life-changing opportunities.

A special thanks to the UNOH, SEMA Education, SBN, Dr. Jarvis, Mr. Farmer, Mr. Meager and Mr. Becker for their leadership, mentorship, and guidance on the networking chance of a lifetime.

MONSTER JAM DREAMS TURN INTO

REALITY FOR STUDENT

APRIL 2020 PAGE 4

Not even a year ago, UNOH student Brenden Rassel was finishing up his third season competing with the UNOH Motorsports team at the DirtCar Winter Nationals in Volusia, Florida. He was preparing for his final 12 months at the University and completing his Bachelor Degree in Automotive Technology Supervision. But then, his dream as a little kid from Woonsocket, South Dakota, started to come into focus.

Because of the University’s partnership with Monster Jam, UNOH students were encouraged to apply for an opportunity to train and try-out to be a driver of a Monster Jam truck! Brenden didn’t waste any time and turned in his application eagerly awaiting the results. In June, 2019, both he and another UNOH student, Zachary White-Griggs were announced as the winners and surprised in front of their fellow Motorsports team-mates.

“Finding out I had the opportunity to go down to Florida to start the try-out process to be a Monster Jam driver was absolutely one of the best things to ever happen in my life,” said Brenden.

After that, it was a whirlwind summer behind the wheel of the 12,000-pound Monster Jam trucks training at Monster Jam University under the tutelage of 11-time Monster Jam World Champion and Driver of the Max-D

truck, Tom Meents. The challenging tracks at Monster Jam replicate the real Monster Jam on-track experience, giving Brenden, along with other novice and veteran athletes and equal chance to excel. The unforgiving obstacles test the physical strength, mental stamina and the dexterity it takes to pilot a Monster Jam truck.

“Getting the experience behind the wheel with a legend like Tom Meents was amazing. He’s the best for a reason because not only is he a great performer, but he’s a great teacher and mentor.” The favorite thing he’s learned so far, getting a good sky-wheelie followed by either a moonwalk or wheelie walk on the landing, “It was the first real trick I got to perform and hearing Tom Meents over the radio saying ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah! You nailed it!’ was really special to me. It’s definitely going to be something I remember for the rest of my life.”

Brenden had a respectable showing at MJU, so good, that he was asked to come back for additional training sessions. Late in 2019 he got the call he’d never expected to get, he was offered a position as a back-up driver for the Triple Threat West Monster Jam tour.

“I’m on call every weekend,” Brenden said. “Whether I come from Daytona, Florida or Dayton, Ohio, I’ll fly in to wherever the tour is at and I’ll be expected to perform on the spot, to have my gear ready and go. It’s stressful at

times, but the part of me that’s a competitor wants to get in a truck and drive, show the fans and Monster Jam what I’ve got.”

Brenden is scheduled to complete his classes in June this year, all of which can be taken online if he would get the call to fill in for a driver short- or long-term if they were either injured, sick, or otherwise unavailable. He’s even traveled to a few shows out west to be there just in case an opportunity arose. It’s a surreal experience for the 23 year old, finally seeing the trucks he idolized as a child, and getting the chance to climb behind the wheels and pull off stunts he only dreamed about.

“I was one of those kids looking at Monster Jam toys and watching them on TV, and I never thought for a minute that I would have an opportunity to jump in one of those trucks and go perform, and hit the jumps and perform two-wheel skills and it’s been a blast!”

Brenden’s next goal, getting a permanent spot in the Monster Jam tour rotation heading into 2021 after some additional training and experience this summer at his return trip to Monster Jam University.

The University of Northwestern Ohio is proud to announce today that it has been named a Top Ten, Gold-level Military Friendly® School in the Private University not offering Doctorate category for the 2020-2021 academic year. This is the eleventh consecutive year that the University of Northwestern Ohio has received a Military Friendly® designation. UNOH is ranked #6 in the country among private universities not offering Doctorate degrees.

“UNOH continually strives to meet the educational needs of the country’s active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses and dependents,” said Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis, UNOH President. “Being recognized not only as Military Friendly®, but as a Top Ten, Gold-Level private university, ranking #6 overall in our category, is proof alone that we have policies and procedures in place to make the dream of obtaining a college education a reality for all of the men and women who serve our country.”

The UNOH Military Relations Department started in 2001. The department provides assistance with the enrollment process to all Active Duty Military, National Guard, Reservists, and Veterans, and assists with scheduling, financial aid, academic counseling, and customer service. The University has always been proud to be a strong supporter of all servicemen and women. In January 2009, UNOH administration made the decision lower tuition below the Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) rate for all military members and veterans. UNOH maintains that lowered tuition rate to this day.

The Military Friendly® Schools list has come to set the standard for higher education institutions to provide the best opportunities for veterans and their spouses. This prestigious list provides a comprehensive guide for veterans and their families using data sources from federal agencies and proprietary survey information from participating organizations.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly ® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey completed by the school. This year more than 1,000 schools participated with 625 schools earning a designation of some type. The 2020-2021 Military Friendly® Schools list will be published in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine. The list can also be found at www.militaryfriendly.com .

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by VIQTORY with input from the Military Friendly ® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default Rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans. For the first time, the methodology included a new measure – the 90/10 Rule and Loophole. Military Friendly® has closed the loophole on the survey and is eager for Congress to follow as it deliberates closing the loophole legislatively.

ABOUT MILITARY FRIENDLY ® SCHOOLS:

The Military Friendly ® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions. The survey questions, methodology, criteria, and weighting were developed with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers. Ernst & Young, a global leader in assurance, tax, transaction, and advisory services, independently evaluated the scoring methodology used for the Military Friendly® Schools list using the criteria set forth by VIQTORY. The services performed by EY are were limited to advisory procedures and do not provide assurance over the scoring methodology. The survey is administered for free and is open to all post-secondary schools that wish to participate. Criteria for consideration can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com .

The University of Northwestern Ohio Career Services Department is proud to announce a new and more powerful website called Racer Careers. The new Racer Careers site has an exciting new look, more powerful tools, and more ways for you to connect with employers, alumni, and staff. Purple Briefcase, the power behind our new system, is a cutting-edge career network used by many universities throughout the country.

TO ACCESS THE NEW RACER CAREERS SIMPLY:Enter the link to Racer Careers http://RacerCareers.unoh.edu and this will open up Purple Briefcase’s sign in page. For your first time entering, click on New User. Select University of Northwestern Ohio from the pull down list, enter your name/email, and click Find Me. If your account was already loaded from our existing system, your account profile information will display and you can create a password. If the system does not find you or you are a new user, you can still enter your information and create an account and password.

Whether you are a first year student or about to graduate, Racer Careers is an important source of information, career-related events, and career exploration tools. Most importantly, Racer Careers is the main platform that the University of Northwestern Ohio uses to post internships, job opportunities, and other important career-related info. We encourage all students to visit the new site and get familiar with the new interface.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO A VERY EXCITING YEAR WITH NEW TOOLS AND MORE WAYS TO CONNECT.

HERE ARE THREE HIGHLIGHTS YOU WILL NOTICE AS YOU BEGIN TO USE THE NEW PLATFORM:

MY SCORE: When you log in the center square has an icon that looks like the figure to the left. As you complete elements within the platform your score will increase. If you are looking for clues you can always click on the center square and it will show what you have completed and suggest activities for you to complete.

MY PROFILE:All students will be able to develop a visual profile that will showcase your work history, academic accolades, and extracurricular information. The visual profile is a new and unique way to share your info with employers, but it does not replace a traditional résumé. Your visual profile serves as a platform for employers to experience what you have to offer, and provides them with access to your résumé. My Profile can be accessed from the left navigation menu, or the lower left square on the home page. We encourage you to begin building your visual profile today.

CONNECTIONS:Our new modern and intuitive platform allows you to search employers, follow them for alerts of their on-campus activity and their posted employment opportunities. You can also connect with [name of your career services department] to setup appointments to learn more ways to help prepare for internships and job opportunities. [name of your purple briefcase platform] has hundreds of career preparation videos for you to watch and comment on, forums for connecting to great career advice, [name of your career services department] event postings that you can RSVP to, and most importantly: Internship and job postings!

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CONTACT THE CAREER SERVICES DEPARTMENT AT (419) 998-3140.
