Beat the recession

We saved £1.5m cash by 300 actions taken by our people

Page 16: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

Inventory reduction

Optimised inventory in our 18 distribution centres around

the world

Freeing up useful space

Improved service to Jaguar Dealers

while reducing inventory by

32%

Page 17: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

Jaguar further

help How could we use this space to

Page 18: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

We took over packing in mid 2010

Page 19: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

What were the results?

Elimination of several

process steps

Improvement in quality of

packaging by

80%

Jaguar received direct cost savings of

£300K

Page 20: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

How Jaguar benefited from Performance through Engagement

But that was just the start…

The team in this new packing area then began looking

for their own ideas to improve productivity

Page 21: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

The drain plug story

Page 22: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

We took on responsibility for assembly and packing of bumpers from Plastic Omnium resolving long term capacity issue for JLR • Sub assembly of Jaguar & Land Rover non current bumpers • Avoided significant investment in moving facility to Europe • 38 machines received, installed and commissioned during 2 week period – model

implementation from Health & Safety perspective • Back orders eliminated and arrears halved within 6 weeks • Facility extended as additional work secured – now at over 50 machines

Page 23: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

In Summary

• High levels of employee engagement enable our leadership teams’ innovative ideas to be implemented

• Further developed by ideas from the shop floor

And our packing teams are still

coming up with new ideas each week, on how they think things could be

further improved

Further cost savings of

£800K to Jaguar in

2013

Page 24: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

How Jaguar benefited from Performance through Engagement

So how do you unlock…

high levels of engagement?

Page 25: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

Engagement enablers…

Defining Vision Set your stall out

Empowerment Train people with a toolset and let them solve problems at their own level

Trust Two way – hard earned, easily lost

Communication Open, honest, frequent. Close the loop

Alignment Clear strategic aims, results, projects, and deliverables

Leadership Clear an unambiguous leadership right from the top

Page 26: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

The Unipart 7 fundamentals of Leadership

Be self aware Understand and reflect on your own style.

Teams should “hear what you say” and “believe what you do”

Know your people really well

Recognise everyone is unique, get to know your teams and what makes them tick

Show respect, be clear, be fair, be consistent

Respect is the one thing we have above everything else – always maintain it

Give your people the opportunity to grow

Challenge your people to grow, don’t resort to ‘command and control’

Set stretching goals Believe the business is capable of growing better, faster, cheaper

Always follow through If you commit to do something, plan for it and then deliver it

Deposit more than you withdraw

The ultimate measure – when the chips are down, are you in credit?

Page 27: Unlocking Potential: Employee Engagement

How Jaguar benefited from Performance through Engagement

which, all in all, sounds a lot like…

a culture of engagement
