Javier A. Cuevas was born Feb-ruary 10, 1973 in the city of Brownsville TX to German Cuevas and Maria Cuevas. Javier spent his formative years in Brownsville and El Paso Texas as well as Im-perial Beach California. A Graduate of Coronado High school Javier received a scholarship to play baseball at St Mary’s University in San Antonio Texas. He was greeted with success and rapid ascension to team leader at Casa Ford. After four years at casa Ford Javier was offered a position as used car manager for Dick Poe Chrysler. Under Javier’s guidance sales

went well and profits were good. After two years with the Poe organization Javier joined forces with his el-der brother, Jorge Cuevas, to open what would later become one of the most recognized Hispanic owned business in the United States.

Over 20,000 soldiers from Fort Bliss, one of the largest military posts in the United States, will re-ceive a $10 gift card from Risotto’s MedRim Bistro this holiday season, summing up to a $200,000 donation from the local restaurant.

The donation was given in efforts to thank the soldiers for their dedicated service to our nation in a time where a recession and holidays have collided. Risotto’s be-lieves that the donation makes a strong statement stress-ing that despite economic adversity, local businesses such as Risotto’s MedRim Bistro can successfully open,

generate jobs in the market and find a way to give back to the community.

One of Risotto’s MedRim Bistro’s objectives has been to become the best restaurant in Northeast El Paso and eventually…the best restaurant in El Paso. The first step towards achieving that objective and becoming a com-munity leader, is through donations such as this one that individually recognizes and rewards the 20,000 soldiers that call Fort Bliss home.

As a strong believer in community involvement, Founder and President of Risotto’s MedRim Bistro, Jorge Camino, wanted to offer something special to Fort Bliss. Camino explained that “Many of our cur-rent guests are soldiers and this is our way of thanking them for their patronage and patriotism.” Jean Offutt, Public Affairs Officer for Fort Bliss will be assisting Risotto’s MedRim Bistro with the dis-semination of the gift cards. She stated, “The generos-ity of Risotto’s MedRim Bistro in giving soldiers and families a special discount to frequent the restaurant is much appreciated and will give them an opportunity for a time out with family and friends during the holiday season.”

This is the first in a series of articles on Well-ness based upon extensive study and research regarding what it takes for us to build and maintain a long-lasting and high quality well being, which allows us to 1) feel better, live longer and have more energy. The first step, in addition to eat¬ing a balanced and nutritional diet and getting frequent exercise is improving our “person-al environment”

To that end, our first topic is: If you knew it was Poison--Would you still use it anyway around Your Family!!!! Begin by thinking of your home as a toxic waste dump. The average home today contains 72 toxic chemi¬cals - more than a chemistry lab at the turn of the century. More than 72,000 synthetic chemicals have been pro-duced since WW II. Less than 2% of synthetic chemi-cals have been tested for what they cause! A majority of chemicals have never been tested for long-term effects. An EPA survey concluded that indoor air was 3 to 70 times more polluted than outdoor air. Another EPA study stated that the toxic chemicals in household cleaners are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air. In your home in the winter the “out-gassing” of chemicals has nowhere to go, so it builds up inside the home. We spend 90% of our time indoors, and 65% of that time at home. Moms, infants and the elderly spend 90% of their time in the home. The National Cancer As¬sociation released results of a 15-year study concluding women who work in home are at a 55% higher risk of develop-ing cancer than women who work outside the home. Cancer rates have al¬most doubled since 1960. Cancer is the Number ONE cause of death for children. There has been a 26% increase in breast can¬cer since 1982. Breast cancer is the Number ONE killer of wom¬en between the ages of 35 and 54. Primary suspects are laun¬dry detergents, household cleaners and pesti-cides. Chemicals get into our body through inhalation, ingestion and absorption. Household cleaners are the Number ONE cause of poisoning of children. The big-gest cause of death in home accidents with chil¬dren is dishwasher detergent. Since 1980, asthma has increased by 600%. The Canadian Lung Association and Asthma Society of Canada identify common household clean-ers and cosmetics as the triggers. Ask any teacher how

many children in their classes are affected by asthma and allergies. The New York Poison Con¬trol Center reports that 85% of product warning labels were ei¬ther inadequate or incorrect for identifying a poison as well as for first aid instructions. Caustic and harmful chemi-cals are found in common household cleaners, cos-metics, beverages, fabrics and cigarette smoke. These chemicals are cancer causing and toxic to the immune system. Chemicals are attracted to, and stored in fatty tissue. Because of the brain’s high fat content and rich blood supply it’s a prime target for these destructive organics. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has found more than 2500 toxic chemicals in cosmetics that cause tumors, reproductive compli-cations, biological mutations, skin and eye irritations. Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, al¬lergies, asthma lupus, multiple sclerosis, circulatory disorders, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and hormonal problems are diseases commonly related to chemical exposure. Pesticides don’t just kill Bugs!!!

In the USA the #1 cause of accidental poisoning of chil-dren is Dawn Dish-washing Detergent. Why? Because it is the #1 seller. Tide contains Lye and is the #1 pol-luter. It is also the #1 seller. Deep Woods and Off have an ingredient called DEET. When we shower, the hot water aerates the chlorine and can cause headaches as can the use of aerosols. Steam from our dryer vents is extremely toxic from the chemicals in fabric soft¬ener sheets and residues from detergents and bleach. There are 4700 chemicals in tobacco smoke. Formaldehyde is one of the largest indoor pollutants in our homes. It is found in most store bought products because it gives products a longer shelf-life. It is also used by morti-cians on dead bodies. You can get a long list of prod-ucts containing formaldehyde from Mayo Clinic. When you walk down the soap aisle you can actually smell the out-gassing of this known cancer-causing ingredi-ent. When clothes and bed clothes are washed in these products when they touch the moisture of your skin

they work just like a nicotine patch only they could be feeding known cancer-causing toxins into your system. Why doesn’t the government protect us? Think LOB-BYISTS! If a company can spend a million or more a week advertising-- as many products do -- how much do you think they spend to lobby for what protects their profits?. In many states, Health departments mandate the use of Clorox which must be locked up before and after every use because it is so dangerous to children. And there are products they could use that would cost less and be safe. When using bleach, antiseptics or chlo-rine in industrial areas, you are required by OSHA to wear impervious protective clothing, hard hats, boots, gloves, apron or coveralls, chemical goggles or full face shield and use only in well ventilated areas. Another ex-ample: When using Easy-Off make sure all your skin is covered, wear protec¬tive clothing, do not breath in and don’t get on your enamel, (if this hurts the enamel on your stove, can you imagine what it will do to us?). In your home you are not likely to wear protective cloth-ing. Start thinking about Wellness and Health for You and Your Family and Do Something about your personal environment that you can control based upon the prod-ucts you use. There are alternative natural-based prod-ucts that are good for you, your personal en¬vironment and our overall global environment. Investigate and do your research, then make a decision-Your Health and that of your Family is too important to take for granted! For more information:
