Wales International Study CentreWhere we are… NewportNewport is a great location. At the gateway to Wales in the south, we are only two hours from London and half an hour from Bristol or Cardiff, whose airports are less than an hour away.

Newport has contributed its fair share to the history of Wales – the legacy of the Roman invasion 2,000 years ago, becoming one of the major ports during the Industrial Revolution, the famous Chartists march on Newport to win the vote and other democratic rights that we now take for granted.

Vibrant and forward-thinking, Newport today caters for everything that the student lifestyle could wish for – shopping, entertainment, sporting facilities, cinemas, clubs, restaurants and a thriving music scene.

Newport is constantly developing and has seen major investments in recent years. With a population of 140,000, it’s the third largest city in Wales and has a multi-cultural community.

The Caerleon campusThe Wales International Study Centre is situated in the Kegie Building on the Caerleon campus of the University of Wales, Newport. The building boasts many eco-friendly benefits including natural ventilation systems, motion sensor lighting and it even recycles rain water for use in and around the building.

The campus has views over rolling Welsh hills and is close to the beautiful river Usk, yet the M4 motorway can be reached within minutes. The city of Newport is a short bus ride away.

Caerleon is a village of Roman remains, scenic riverside locations, quaint cottages and annual arts festivals. The Amphitheatre, which is believed to be the site of King Arthur’s Round Table, is today a setting for popular theatrical events and celebrations.

Student accommodationWe understand that where you live is a big part of your student life. The WISC accommodation is based at the Caerleon campus within 661 self-catered, single study bedrooms with a choice of standard or en-suite facilities.

The ensuite halls are arranged into flats of five single study bedrooms and a shared kitchen. The standard halls have approximately 15 residents per floor who share the bathrooms, shower rooms and a kitchen. All the fully fitted modern kitchens are equipped with a cooker, fridge/freezer, microwave oven, electric kettle, and toaster. A communal television lounge is also available in each standard hall.

The ResNet service is a high speed internet service for students living within halls of residence. For a small annual charge, students can receive a high speed internet connection in their study bedrooms.

WelfareIf you need help with any personal, financial or academic difficulties, the student counsellors at the International Study Centre are there to advise. They will help you settle in quickly during your first few days and will be available throughout your studies.

The University of Wales, Newport also has a comprehensive range of Student Services providing advice on health, welfare, counselling, disability and careers. In addition, a personal tutorial system ensures that all students are given the fullest possible support and there is always someone available to help with academic or other problems. Student Services at Newport achieved the Matrix standard reflecting the high quality of services to students.

Student insuranceIn our experience, it is essential that international students have the protection of personal insurance for the duration of their time in the UK.

For this reason, Study Group (which runs the International Foundation Year) has developed an insurance policy called StudyCare. It will cover you for loss of personal possessions, as well as providing health and medical insurance. In order to make sure you have the right type of cover Study Group automatically adds the StudyCare to your invoice once your place has been confirmed.

However, if you wish to make your own insurance arrangements, please let us know on the application form enclosed.

For full information about StudyCare visit: www.walesisc.com

FacilitiesStudents at the WISC have full access to all of the facilities on campus. This includes access to computer suites 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as well as internet access in your halls of residence.

The food outlets on campus cater for a variety of diets at low prices. Fitness fanatics can make use of our fully equipped Sports Centre which provides a range of sporting, fitness and leisure experiences.

The lively Students’ Union will ensure that you have lots to look forward to after your lectures too, with many clubs and societies to join.
