Dr. Jennings:

I am proposing a new eJective for fourth year medicaJ students. It is my belief that recent attempts to giveincreased exposure to muJtipJe areas ofheaJth care to our students are well-intentioned, and I hope theseopportunities continue to grow. It is with this intent that I offer this elective course: to offer broaderexposure to the areas of maxillofaciaJ surgery, pathology, and faciaJ pain to medical students.

If taken advantage of, this elective would be of benefit to students primarily interested in a number ofspecialties.

Primary care specialties would gain particular benefit fl-om learning fl-ont line treatment forpatients with facial pain and TMD, as well as learning when and where to refer these patients. They would also have the opportunity to see and treat firsthand the consequences of prolongedneglect of oral health.

Students with an interest in surgery or emergency medicine would benefit from learning treatmentfor facial trauma victims. There is extensive review of facial radiography on this rotation.Students could also observe safe/standard of care practices of sedation for minor surgery.

Students with a primary interest in pathology will have expanded exposure to oral pathology casesas well as histology.

The primary faculty members have dual appointments in the College of Medicine: Cunningham-Dept. ofSurgery, Damm and White-Dept. of Pathology, Okeson-Dept. of Neurology. We view this as anexciting way to interact with our future colleagues and a valuable educational opportunity for those whocan take advantage of it

Thank you for your time and consideration of this proposal.
