University of Oregon’s use of WorldCat Analysis for Assessment
Dave FowlerHead, Licensing, Grants Administration and
Collection AnalysisFebruary 27, 2013
WorldCat Analysis use, pre-2012• Use was fairly light.• 3x year, for academic program reviews
(Biology, Physics, Landscape Architecture, etc.)• Occasional special requests from subject
specialists (CJK analysis, Romance languages.• Baseball analysis!
Late 2012, Accreditation
• Sudden need for a large amount of intensive data, in a fairly short time frame.
• Needed to compare UO holdings to various comparators, in various configurations, including:
2013 Accreditation
• Orbis-Cascade Alliance• Greater Western Library Alliance• Association of American Universities• Association of Research Libraries• Carnegie Very High Research Activity
Institutions
2013 Accreditation
• Questions:
• How do UO collections rank overall with our comparators, on average?
• How do selected, specific collections rank overall with our comparators (Arts, Political Science, Religion/Philosophy?
2013 Accreditation
• Rationale:• Needed normalized data to present to visiting
accreditation team.• Important to present all examined schools, adjust
for FTEs, and see how UO holdings compared.• Looked for specific areas of strengths that we
could pull out and highlight.• Looked for areas of opportunity, where we fell
short, and that aligned with strategic priorities.

Ways to Make it Easier
• Ability to pull out in-depth silos of subject areas in one dip, rather than multiple dives for data in each sub-category.
• For institutions with multiple OCLC symbols, provide option to combine all associated symbols within a single institution.
• Improvements that will save time, reduce steps/clicks and time required to pull data.

The “Right” Kind of Data
• Every library could be different• UO finds that multiple “one on one”
comparisons, aggregated, provide the most useful and flexible data.
• Need the ability to do both high-level scans of collections and in-depth “deep dives” of detailed subject collections with relatively short notice, and short turnarounds, “on demand.”

The “Right” Kind of Data
• Work with members and vendors to improve OCLC holdings….more electronic holdings make the analyses both more accurate…
• …and more relevant in a virtual environment.
• Comprehensive title lists nice, but Not essential in most cases.
Future Possibilities at UO
• UO created a library intranet page with existing comparisons for future reference.
• Would like the ability to re-run “canned” comparisons at will, at intervals.
• Library Administration and subject specialists have taken note of the data that has been harvested so far, and requests for data have been gradually increasing.
Future Possibilities at UO
• As audience becomes accustomed to large amounts of data being retrieved and summarized for them, the demand for even more data will grow.
• Essentially becomes a “data mining” operation for libraries.
